ESPN: Brandon Roy to Retire

According to the NBA homepage on ESPN Brandon Roy will announce his retirement today.

Star-divide

This just dampened my weekend and probably my entire NBA season. I was truly hurt the last time Greg Oden got injured and could not watch any Blazers games for almost a month. I never thought I would see Brandon retire so young though. So difficult to see such a talented player go down like this. If true, this is truly a sad day for blazer fans.

I was just on ESPN and saw this...

What? Deep down I’m hoping that Brandon pulls a “Darius Miles” and retires, has his contract voided, and returns to the league next year with a new contract or something…is something like that even possible? Is there a mandatory “sit-out” period if a player retires before he can triumphantly return?

No...on many levels

1st ….no one get’s their contract voided….ever. 2nd Darius was medically retired on an involantary basis…which is a totally different circumstance

I heard this on the radio on the way to work today. I seriously just yelled “WHAT!?” outloud in my car. For some reason, big blazer news always happens while I’m behind the wheel. I almost drove off the side of the road when I heard we got the #1 pick. Now I think I’m gonna road rage…

ARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGH!!!!!!!!- Sabonis getting fouled.

Lots of questions...

So, did the Blazers know it was coming which is why they came out anti-amnesty?

Does this in effect clear the books just like an amnesty? Or even better for Allen because insurance will kick in and pay the bill?

I'm sure people will ask, so....

The previous CBA’s rule was this regarding players who with “Long Term Injuries”

Any player who suffers a career-ending injury or illness, and whose contract is terminated by the Team in accordance with the NBA waiver procedure, will be excluded from his Team’s Team Salary as follows:

(1) Beginning on the first anniversary of the injury or illness, the Team may apply to the NBA to have the player’s Salary for each remaining Salary Cap Year covered by the Contract excluded from Team Salary.

(2) The determination of whether a player has suffered a career-ending injury or illness shall be made by a physician selected jointly by the NBA and the Players Association.

(3) Notwithstanding Section 4(h)(1) and (2) above, the career-ending injury or illness of a player who plays in more than ten (10) games in any Season shall not be deemed to have occurred prior to the last game in which the player played in such Season.

It would appear that if Brandon truly retires, the Blazers have to wait to apply for cap relief until at least next summer.

What I mean to say is

they have to wait to apply for cap relief until a year has passed since he last played. That would be late April. So I don’t see how his contract could come off this year’s cap, but it would come off of the 3 future seasons if it was granted, just as if amnesty was used next summer.

salary?

So would PA still owe Brandon his full salary? Do the Blazers have insurance to cover it?

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

According to KP

Portland took the $5 unguaranteed from Brandon’s last year and bought a secondary insurance policy. KP said that Brandon’s deal was “80 or 90 percent insured”.

Whatever happens...

BRoy is the greatest player I ever saw put on a Trail Blazers jersey.

agree

I fully expected him to eclipse Clyde Drexler by the end of his career. This is a sad day in Blazer land.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I am so glad about

being at game 4. If you are going to go out…it’s great to go out as a warrior. Probably be one of my greatest lifetime memories.
