Frye-lock and I'm on top rock you like a cop
Good thing we didn't waste our amnesty on a player who has to retire anyway
I like to look at the bright side.
A very small consolation for a franchise saving player
wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh T.T
Life is not fair…
Blazers basketball? Just basketball you say? More like a way of life
True we all wanted to amnesty him
but the thought that he has to medically retire at 27 is sad news nonetheless
Blazers basketball? Just basketball you say? More like a way of life
I'm flabbergasted that he's retiring.
Although health wise it’s an admirable move on his part, I never expected that he’d do it.
"I Am Mine"
Before you know it, he'll be back in the starting lineup.
He’ll retire, unless Nate starts him.
If his knees are this bad,
then I’d rather see him do this than blow it up on the court for us or another team.
How sad would it be watching him try to struggle through this season only to go down again, or make himself worse long term?
Thanks for everything you did for us BRoy.
I don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way.

Wow, just wow
Wishing BRoy the best, hope this medical retirement goes a lot smoother than Darius Miles’
Sad news
I feel for Brandon and am embarassed to ask (but will anyway):
How does medical retirement affect cap/tax situation?
Counts for this year
Hollinger tweeted that medical retirement has him on the books for 1 year after the date of retirement
by Left.Coast.503 on Dec 9, 2011 7:46 AM PST up reply actions
Which is why he'd need to be amenstied, since the team would want to avoid the tax hit this year.
"I Am Mine"
But then insurance doesn't pay the rest
I’d think a year of luxury tax would be cheaper than paying the balance out of pocket.
That's a good point.
Since 80% of his contract is insured, you’re correct the long-term savings of medical retirement outweigh the short-term luxury tax savings.
"I Am Mine"
ESPN suggested that his retirement date could be set one day after we were eliminated from the playoffs, in late April
Which, depending on how the lux tax is calculated in the new system (i.e. whether it is based on the last day of the regular season, or last day before the July moratorium), there’s a possibility that Roy’s contract wouldn’t count towards the luxury tax.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
What if we waive Barron (non-guaranteed deal)
I thought we sneak under tax if we take the $1.0MM off the books.

I would wait for Ben/Dave to bump this 'till after it happens. Don't wanna conjecture too much.
However, if this does go down it is a major league bummer for Brandon. Trying so damn hard to get ready for this season and his knees just don’t seem to be getting any better no matter what he does. Shame.

This confuses me, though. Just Monday Roy was apparently saying he felt great and was ready to go. What happened to quickly change things so drastically?

Timing is extremely odd to say the least
what a rollercoaster this week

not that odd

Twitter is the first place most reports show up now
Its the fastest way to get the news out, and these reporters want to be the first to report.
"...it was like he brought his own personal cross-wind to the arena." - Dave
Do you guys realize what this means?
Basically Roy and the blazers reached an agreement that the Blazers would show a sign of faith in Roy by not amnestying him for good publicity but Roy would medically retire in the end.
If he does retire.
Blazers basketball? Just basketball you say? More like a way of life
Probably right
That or he had some huge setback somehow.
"...it was like he brought his own personal cross-wind to the arena." - Dave
Yeah, I started tearing up a little bit when I read the news.
Though, I’d rather it end like this than him getting amnestied while forcing himself to play with a horrible condition. He might have saved himself from hobbling on a cane in the future
Retiring rich at 26 isn't exactly a sad situation.
And he’ll always be remembered as a fan favorite.
in your opinion it may not be a sad situation,
in mine it is. Money isn’t everything to all of us.

of course, that is the plus side.
But basketball was his life and not having that anymore is not easy.
He will be fine, as a fan it’s just a sad to see it end this way.

In 10 years, I hope he'll be able to enjoy being able to shoot hoops with his kids more than he regrets not being able to compete.
But right now, this has got to be so hard on him.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
Thank you
Blazers basketball? Just basketball you say? More like a way of life
If Roy takes medical retirement, then he doesn't get paid the rest of his contract, does he?
If true, I guess this is an honorable move by him, but a shocking one.
"...it was like he brought his own personal cross-wind to the arena." - Dave
Note: I presume Roy retiring is different than the Blazers retiring him, ala Miles
"...it was like he brought his own personal cross-wind to the arena." - Dave
Medical retirement
He’ll still get paid. The only difference is it will be from insurance, not from Paul Allen.
Sad choice
But probably the right choice for Brandon. Be able to walk while you still can and play ball with your kid.
you're right
I’d take being able to play with your kid is even more huge than having to walk with a cane. This may be what they meant by “Roy is being very mature about the whole situation.”
by Batumshakalaka on Dec 9, 2011 8:00 AM PST up reply actions
What is the financial implication for the Blazers?
Does the contract come off the books meaning a full MLE?
It's all coming to a head
By next year both Oden and Roy will be gone. A team built around LMA is the future.
I hear there's an opening for a sideline reporter
He’s good with a mic, and everybody loves him.
That's true
There was one time he did a whole skit while the game was still playing. It was crazy annoying because you couldn’t see anything, but he was pretty comfortable speaking.
by Batumshakalaka on Dec 9, 2011 8:02 AM PST up reply actions
I hope they open a coaching position for him.
He is a fixture here, and I don’t want to see him just drop off the face of the planet.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.
He'd be better at that
Mike Rice isn’t getting any younger, too. Roy and Barrett would be less entertaining than Mike & Mike, but it’d be a good duo.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
Yeah, I thought he'd run himself into the ground.
Credit to him for retiring, though, which is a move without reproach.
"I Am Mine"
Perhaps he practiced too hard in the offseason.
I could see that happening.
Canzano missed the scoop, big time.
What a hack.
It's a sad day when AK1984 has more emotion.
Blazers basketball? Just basketball you say? More like a way of life
In some ways, I have less emotion.
It takes emotion of some kind to get riled up at John Canzano, who I just tend to ignore.

Retire 7 on opening day
The guy’s a legend in Portland .. so many great memories. Just hoping this isn’t true

has he already had his physical? could they have found something else wrong?
It seems it went from Brandon feeling good to now this so quickly

wow
i got nothing other than that, i just woke up O_o
Fan of Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Broncos, and Portland Timbers
He didn't want to go anywhere else
“Sources say Roy has privately conceded his ongoing knee trouble would have inevitably led to a reduced role, and given his close connection with the Portland community the former All-Star does not want to end up being released through the forthcoming amnesty clause and thus eligible to be picked up by another team.”

That makes perfect sense.
Why would he want to play on bad knees for some other crappy team.
Retirement is a win/win.
I actually agree with Manfredi
It’s best for the Blazers, and best for Roy’s future. Playing any role even for the blazers wouldn’t be worth it for him in the long run. Let him live the rest of his life without being crippled.
by Batumshakalaka on Dec 9, 2011 8:06 AM PST up reply actions 1 recs
I knew Roy was never going to be the same again
But it is still so sad. I wanted him just for the chance that Game 4 could happen again. There are so few players that really have magic in them. He was one.
b-roy
There is no "glad we didn’t use the amnesty on him" – this was planned, the team and Brandon knew but couldn’t announce until today, this takes his money of the books and gives the team the opportunity to use the amnesty on someone else. It’s a win win – Roy gets paid and the team gets cap relief. It also allows Brandon to somewhat go out on top with his last images being the his epic play in the Dallas series.

Wish it never even came down to amnesty or retirement.
Feel so bad for him. Such talent. Classy guy to the end. I hope he continues his relationship with the Blazers in his retirement.
Trade John Canzano
Who would the Blazers use the amnesty on?
potentially?
"He's not your Vydas or my Vydas, he's Arvydas."
I'll answer my own question
LA – 12 mill, not going to happen
Camby – 11 mill, but expiring
G Wallace – 9 mill, with a player option after this year for another 9 mill
Greg – 8 mill, not going to happen
Felton – 7 mill
Wes – 6 mill
Nic is next – 2 mill, will be extended
"He's not your Vydas or my Vydas, he's Arvydas."
Best bet would be to save it, as an insurance against a major injury to LMA or
Felton, Crash, or Batum, who would all be eligible if they are extended (since they were all under contract and on the roster as of July 1, 2011). If the last 3 end up FA’s, then resign, they won’t be eligible for amnesty down the line.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
Can they still amnesty Roy's contract?
So that they can use the full $5mill exception?

End of an era!
Hope he remains a part of the organization in some capacity. He seems to be a real positive force to those around him.

You will be missed. Thanks for your great work as a Blazer.

It would be a pretty bad joke if all of this turned out to be not true.
Blazers basketball? Just basketball you say? More like a way of life
anyways
gotta go back to studying for a final that im gonna fail tomorrow! bye!
Blazers basketball? Just basketball you say? More like a way of life
This was inevitable
And I’m glad Roy realized it before fully wrecking his knees. He’s bone-on-bone in both knees, there is no future in the NBA with that. I’m just happy we got one last magic moment with him in Game 4 last year.
I know where I come from, and when you always have in mind where you come from the rest will be easy. I think the rest will be easy.

Sad day....
A little Of me just died inside…
My fav blazers ever!
So… How much cap can the blazers have next summer then?
by Hoi on Dec 9, 2011 8:13 AM PST via mobile reply actions
Emotional
I call for no more posts about amnesty, asking “now what?”, etc. If this is true, then this whole section should be about thanking Roy for his fantastic years as a Blazer, resurrecting the franchise, and good wishes for his future. We can examine the repercussions later.
Thanks for everything and good luck Brandon. Take care of your knees so you can play hoops w/ your kids. Whatever you do, we’re rooting for you.
"The invention of basketball was not an accident. It was developed to meet a need. Those boys simply would not play Drop the Handkerchief." - James Naismith
Agreed
Adding my thanks to BRoy.
I didn’t watch the NBA from the previous lockout, till the season where LMA/Roy were drafted. I loved watching Roy play and he literally brought me back in to the NBA fold. I always said if the Blazer’s didn’t do right by Roy I would simply go back to not watching the NBA again. I was feeling like if they used the amnesty on Roy I might just have to follow through on that. Glad that won’t be a concern for me anymore.
Thanks for the memories Brandon.
