Blazers Announce 2011-2012 NBA Schedule (66-Game Lockout Edition)

The Rose Garden court on Monday. The season is just around the corner. Kick the forklift into high gear!

The Portland Trail Blazers have announced their 2011-2012 NBA schedule on Blazers.com and via press release. Here's a printable version in PDF. The Blazers will play 66 games during the abbreviated season with 48 coming against Western Conference foes and 18 against Eastern Conference opponents.

The Blazers open their season on Dec. 26 at home against the Philadelphia 76ers in the Rose Garden.

Monthly breakdown

  • December: 3 -- 3 home, 0 road
  • January: 18 -- 7 home, 11 road
  • February: 14 -- 8 home, 6 road
  • March: 17 -- 8 home, 9 road
  • April: 14 -- 7 home, 7 road
Road trips / Home Stands
  • Road trips: 1 seven game trip; 1 six game trip; 1 three game trip; 4 two game trips; 9 one game trips
  • Home stands: 7 three game home stands; 3 two game home stands; 6 one game home stands
First back-to-back-to-back
  • Vs. Kings, Vs. Grizzlies, At Warriors on January 23-25
Second back-to-back-to-back
  • Vs. Wizards, At Warriors, Vs. Clippers on February 14-16
Eastern Conference home-and-home

Each Western Conference team will only play three Eastern Conference teams twice. The Blazers will play the Milwaukee Bucks, Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards twice.

Update: I created this chart to compare Portland's draw here to other teams around the league. The chart lays out the win differentials between all 30 NBA teams and the three non-conference opponents they have to play twice based on last year's results. The Blazers have a differential of +14 (48 wins last year and an average of 34 opponent wins) which happens to be the fourth highest differential in the league (trailing only San Antonio, Chicago and Houston). So if you thought drawing Milwaukee, Atlanta and Washington was a stroke of very good luck for the Blazers, you were right.

Eastern Conference home vs. road games

Each Western Conference team will play the other 12 Eastern Conference teams just once. Of note, the Blazers will travel for road games against the Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls but will get the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat at home.

The Blazers previously announced a home-and-home 2-game preseason schedule with the Utah Jazz on Dec. 19 and Dec. 21.

Here's the press release...

The Portland Trail Blazers will tip-off their 42nd NBA season by hosting the Philadelphia 76ers as part of a three-game home stand, marking the third straight year the team has opened at the Rose Garden.

All 66 Trail Blazers games (33 home, 33 away) will be aired on the Trail Blazers Broadcast Television Network or national carriers. Portland's complete broadcast schedule will be available in the coming days.

Portland plays seven of its first 10 games at home and closes the season by playing five of its last six on the road. The schedule includes a six-game road trip (Jan. 13-21) and a season-high, seven-game trip (March 7-18).

The Trail Blazers will face each Western Conference opponent at least three times, including four contests with Golden State, the L.A. Clippers, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Sacramento and Utah.

Each of Portland's four Northwest Division opponents will visit the Rose Garden twice. The Trail Blazers will make two trips to both Oklahoma City and Utah, while visiting Minnesota and Denver just once.

Portland will play 18 games against Eastern Conference opponents (nine home, nine away). The Trail Blazers will face each Eastern Conference opponent at least once, including two games against Atlanta, Milwaukee and Washington.

The 66-game schedule features two back-to-back-to-back scenarios (Jan. 23-25, Feb. 14-16) and 16 back-to-back games.

Among the top teams making the trip to the Rose City in 2011-12: the defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks on April 13; the defending Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat on March 1 and the Western Conference rival L.A. Lakers on Jan. 5.

The Trail Blazers close out the 2011-12 NBA regular season at Utah on Thursday, April 26.

Tickets for individual games go on sale on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 10 a.m., exclusively on trailblazers.com.

I'd almost rather play Miami in Miami rather than PDX

the energetic Portland home crowd seems to get LeBron up more than the more subdued Miami crowd.

LeBron just dominates the Blazers

The only times we’ve beaten him were one game during Roy’s rookie year (LeBron got only a little help from Larry Hughes that game) and last season after the Wallace trade.

For the Blazers, Crash is the X-Factor against a team with LeBron James.

The really bad news is that, on the second half, there are some likely below-.500 teams, which could hurt.

Right, you hate to lose games you should have won just because you are tired.

On the other hand, you have a chance to win those and 3 of the last 4 are at home.

If you plan to visit Portland and want to see two home games on two consecutive nights...

Here are your choices:

Dec 26 and 27. (76ers and Kings)
Jan 10 and 11 (Clippers and Magic)
Jan 23 and 24 (Kings and Grizzlies)
Apr 1 and 2 (Timberwolves and Jazz)

by Timmay! on Dec 6, 2011 4:19 PM PST reply actions

That's probably the best option.

The NBA doesn’t usually schedule back to back home games, so this is a rarity if you happen to be traveling to the area anyway. If you’re there for the holidays, just stay a few extra days.

It means that when a game is on NBA TV, ESPN, TNT or ABC it's not available anywhere else nationally.

So if you have League Pass BB, but don’t have cable, you won’t be able to see any Blazer game nationally broadcast on the above cable stations. Same for ABC if you don’t have locals. It’ll simply show as “Blacked Out” and you cannot stream it.

It’s a longtime quirk of the broadcasting rights. The soonest anything will change is 2016. And I don’t think there’s a guarantee even then. But the broadcasting landscape is changing rapidly, so who knows.

by Timmay! on Dec 6, 2011 5:58 PM PST up reply actions

Almost forgot: Locally, a game can still be on KGW if a cable station is also showing it.

There are specific rules about how that works, but I’m too lazy to look them up.

by Timmay! on Dec 6, 2011 5:59 PM PST up reply actions

Hmmm. Good question.

I don’t know the rules for Canada.

I’m also not sure if International League Pass allows access to games on TNT or ABC. Pretty sure they do for NBA TV. Someone in Canada can give a better answer here than I can.

by Timmay! on Dec 6, 2011 6:04 PM PST up reply actions

International League Pass allows to watch all games not shown in the respective market on TV

Though I’m not sure on the rules re Canada either since that might be a special situation

That's the part that ticks me off

The Lakers have only one 6 game road trip, whereas the Blazers have a 6 and 7 game trip. Additionally they have a four game home stand whereas the Blazers best home stand is 3 games. They also have 6 of 7 game home stand, and again the Blazers do not get this. I think this is another case of catering to your sexy markets once again at the expense of the “little guy”.

I'm less worried about road trips than b2b2b and b2b

as well as how often they play 3 games in 4 nights and 4 in 5 etc. I also hope the Clippers get CP3 since that would put at least 1 quality team in their division.

Trying to predict their record will be like reading tea leaves!

This season isn’t going to be about which team is better — it’s going to be about which team is better conditioned, has a deeper rotation, and who doesn’t get injured.

You might see a gimme on the schedule, but then you see we are on the fifth game in 6 days, and the other team is fresh.

We might have a tough game, but they’re playing their 5th game in a week while we are about to start a back to back.

This season, anything can happen. Record and seeds do not matter as much because during the post season everyone will be a different team.

This is the season that might end the Celtics, Spurs and Lakers.

This is the Season that might make OKC, Sacramento and Milwaukee.

Young teams may rise and old teams may break.

Where are we? Will our rookies from the last year two years make us young, or will our veterans bring us crashing down.

by Anim8rguy on Dec 6, 2011 5:47 PM PST reply actions

Portland is really young

Camby is elderly and assuming Pryz comes back he’s 32 the next oldest is Wallace at 30 otherwise no one over 30. The condensed schedule makes waiving Barron and bringing back Pendy a very smart move since Pendy is young and probably pretty well conditioned because of his rehab.

I'm glad Nate checked in with Chip Kelly during the offseason

maybe he incorporates some high-speed playmaking and over the top conditioning.

41-25

4th or 5th seed.

The smarter you are, the more likely you are to be tripping balls at any given moment.

I blame Roy already.

Well then be prepared to give him credit when we go 42-24...

…and he averages 16pts. – 4rebs & 4ast. while adapting to his new role and being a complimentary player to LMA while he makes his first All Star appearance!

Sounds like it’s time to buy some tickets.

16-4-4 for Roy, 20-8 for Aldridge

we’d be pretty damn good for that

64 pts from 4 guys

throw in say 12 or 14 apiece from Nic and Wes, something from who ever plays Center, and we’ll be looking great, not even counting all the “lesser” back up guys, the CJ’s, and Nolan’s and the like.

Why doesn't Nate just install a "million-billion point offense" where everyone just scores more than the other team?

Gawd, he should hire us as assistants.

I forgot

Adapting to his new role.. I think Nate might have something to say about that one.

vs. West

4 games (2 home, 2 away):
Golden State
LA Clippers
New Orleans
Oklahoma City
Sacramento
Utah

3 games (2 home, 1 away):
Denver
Houston
Memphis
Minnesota

3 games (1 home, 2 away):
Dallas
LA Lakers
Phoenix
San Antonio

Overall, our mix of team in the 4-game category doesn’t look too bad. when you look at the 3-game teams though, we definitely get 2 home against the much easier group vs 2 away against the harder group. This can be looked at as either a positive or a negative, depending on your philosophy.

considering the advanced years of SA , LAL, and Dallas roster

the question is where are PDX and them on B2B2B’s and B2B’s coming in to the games ?

Snappin' necks and cashin' checks

The FO holds the Roy press conference the day before the schedule is announced. See how they did that. Buy those tickets. You can give them away later after The Albatross gets amnestied, and The Vulcans still get their money. No really, it probably won’t play out like that – I’d buy the tickets…

Injuries will be that much more devastating across the NBA

Small injuries as well, where guys sometimes had a nice three day break to recover, that will be few and far between.

40 - 26

I see them winning right around 60%. This would be analagous to winning 50 in a normal regular season of 82 games.

Faith applied reasonably is practical magic.

Let's not gloss over how sinister this schedule is

First the owners lock the players out, and then (to make as much of their money back as they can) they subject them to this grueling condensed schedule, that most certainly puts the players at risk. This is the league you give your money to.

by heybabydrinkyourmilk on Dec 6, 2011 8:12 PM PST via mobile reply actions

I think the players are culpable in this too

the less games the less game checks

by Biph on Dec 6, 2011 8:18 PM PST up reply actions

okay so with the few games this season

I’m thinking that 40 wins is similar to 50 in a normal year, and something like 45 (maybe a little higher) would be similar to 60.

is that about right?

I JUST WANT MY BASKETBALL BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Sean in Vancouver on Dec 6, 2011 8:37 PM PST reply actions

yeah

its about an 80 percent decrease in total games so id say 60 regular games would be like 48 or so this season

by blazers12 on Dec 6, 2011 8:46 PM PST up reply actions

okay so right in the neighborhood

with that in mind…… I’m thinking the Blazers will get between about….. 38-43 wins, if everything goes right injury wise then we could get closer to 46-48.

Didn't see anybody mention the end of the year... excellent playoff prep

Two things struck me about the schedule at the end of the year:
1) We only have 4 games in the last 10 days (after Monday the 16th, we have Wed, Sat, Mon, Thurs the 26th.

If you add in a few days delay for the start of the playoffs, the Blazers have a good chance
to get a bit rested at the end of the season,

2) Some good playoff likely opponents to practice on, with plenty of days to try out strategies if you might be facing them in the playoffs…
