Bill Simmons Predicts: Steve Nash To Be Traded To Blazers
Grantland.com's Bill Simmons -- also known as "The Sports Guy" -- randomly makes the following 2012 prediction in his Week 17 NFL picks column: "[Phoenix Suns guard] Steve Nash will get traded to the Portland Trail Blazers." No further commentary is provided.

i think that would have been cool for us and steve about three years ago
now, it seems a bit weird. but so is simmons.
"I told somebody to stop crying," Pendergraph said after the game. "Actually, I told them all to stop crying."
That seems rather random, even by BS's standards.

Bill Simmons is friends with Nash.
I assume he’s just making a random prediction, but I do remember him talking about how he once asked Nash why he didn’t request the Suns to trade him to a team like the Blazers.

I think Simmons just likes teasing Blazer fans
especially B-edgers
Yeah, the Nash to PDX lure is at least an annual tradition.
Gotta get them hits.

We are better off with the PGs we have
If Nash came here he would insist on starting. But at this point Felton suits the team just fine and he’s a lot younger. So there is no reason for the Blazers to even think about obtaining him.
Besides, who would the Blazers give up? Nobody serious is worth Nash so this is really a nonstarter.
This is my signature. Do you like it?
obviously they would give up Felton
which I would do. I like Felton too, but I don’t see him as being around long term. Nash makes this team a lot more dangerous this year.
"Sasha? That's a sissy name." -Mike Rice
If somehow this got us Gortat as well without giving up much
then it wouldn’t be that bad, but Batum is probably our best trade-worthy asset, and they are already pretty loaded with wings, so we’d have to take Josh Childress’s contract or something as well and give up camby to make the salaries work out (assuming an extend and trade would happen to Batum’s contract). Would be a gamble, but then again we are a team with a bunch of one year contracts headed into a good draft, so crazy trades may go down this year. I’d probably pass though, even though I think Gortat could be really good for this team.
If you were going to trade Felton and then possibly have to give up Nic as well youd be better off doing it for Rondo
by Willie Beamon on Dec 30, 2011 8:03 PM PST up reply actions
no chance that happens.
but jeez i do hope we trade nic before everyone realizes how overrated he is.
He's more valuable as a trade asset than an on-court asset, at this point at least
That’s not the same as overrated, but…
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
Nic is awesome! For the future.
But looks like this team is looking forward to win now!
Blazers r talking to Wallace about an extension. Looks like blazers are on the Wallace banwagon over the nic.
Or just saying… Wes could go out instead of Batum. Have a starting line up of Nash, Batum, Wallace, LMA and camby.
by Hoi on Dec 30, 2011 9:48 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Nah.
Both Wes and Nic are waaayyy more valuable that Steve Freakin’ Nash.
This is my signature. Do you like it?
Marcin Gortat is more valuable than Wes and Nic, however.
Portland should push a Camby/Nic for Gortat/Childress trade.
"I Am Mine"
In the right situation, one year of top level Steve Nash is more valuable than Nic Batum. One year of top level Steve Nash is more valuable than Wesley Matthews in pretty much any situation (if you want to instantly reproduce Wesley’s talent later this year, J.R. Smith is a superior player and will be available after the Chinese season is over, for example). Of course, Nash has had a few bad games this year so he might be finally dropping off. And in any case this is not a great fit for him since like AK says we’re not quite contending for a title yet, so I wouldn’t trade Nic for him. But we’re overrating our own talent here, I think/
i keep dancing on my own.
Blazer fans typically do
Outlaw, Bayless, Jack, Webster, etc. could all be straight up traded for future hall of famers (PAUL-cough, PAUL-cough) no matter what their actual production or value.

Except with Batum
He’s the first one that could potentially come back to bite us later as a really solid player after we got rid of him. Much like how we’ve been worried about Oden. Would be sad to get rid of him and see him kill it elsewhere in a few years. Those other players I don’t think we thought that as much even if we did think very highly of them.
Batum may not ever reach what we think is his potential, but he’s got more potential than the others did.
"but he’s got more potential than the others did."
That’s revisionist history when it comes to Bayless and Webster.
Like with Nicolas Batum, those two were overhyped beyond belief at first. People might’ve been more quickly to sour on them — and rightly so — however, that doesn’t mean they weren’t supposedly potential-laden stars in the making before crashing down to earth.
"I Am Mine"
I'd do
Nash, Gortat, and Childress for Camby, Felton, and Matthews. I think the lineup of Nash, Batum, Wallace, Aldridge, Gortat with Crawford as the 6th man would provide a good combination of offense and defense, and I think Nash (in spite of his age) could still trigger fast breaks to go along with the up-tempo style, but also do good things in the half-court with high pick and rolls, etc. This may sound crazy, but I think I’d take that top six to match up well with just about any team in the western conference this year, including teams like LAC and OKC.
Absolutely agree.
What is this fixation with Nash? An old point guard on the down side of his career is still an old point guard on the downside of his career. It guarantees nothing this year and solves nothing after that. And just what do we do after that? Go back to Blake? Because that’s about all we’d have to look forward to. Gortat, on the other hand, teamed with Aldridge provides a solid front line. And Childress, given Crawford/Matthews and Wallace is an acceptable backup.
Yeah, a strong post player like Marcin Gortat would go a long, long way in solidifying ...
Portland’s core. On the other hand, Steve Nash would be a half-season hired gun who, in all likelihood, would flop as a Blazer. For Nash, his best situation is a team competing for a title this very season — such as Boston or Dallas — where he could fit in seamlessly. I, of course, want to see Nash return to Dallas for one last run, so maybe I’m biased here.
"I Am Mine"
I say we only take Nash if we can also have Fisher and Billups.
Now there are the point guards of the future.
Yes, let's collect a bunch of twilight PGs. We'll call them the Twilight Points.
The future is darkness so I guess twilight points are the present.

I'd like to watch Felton more
(or at all since I’ve been out of town for the holidays still) before I pass judgement on that. But it seems like he’ll fit well so far.
Jury's still out
So far, that has been absolutely false. We’ve yet to see whether Felton is better than Miller.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???

Actually, I think Felton will fit here better
But isn’t exactly a better point guard.
Felton fits because of his range. We need that. I still feel Miller set up player better.

Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.
how is Nash's defense compared to Felton?
if it is anywhere near then DEFINITELY get nash…I would love Nash here. I would love the honor of having Nash finish his career as a blazer. Such an amazing player.
WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE
much much worse
Felton is an above avg to good defender (8th in steals last year). Nash at his peak was at best a poor defender.
Red means run, son, numbers add up to nothin
Yes
This is why McMillan either lobbied for or countenanced the acquisition of Felton.
McMillan is Mr. PG Defense himself. He likes Felton. Felto is oddly old school, and McMillan likes that about him. Plus he is kind of burly the way McMillan was. The main difference is that Felton appears to be kind of a goofball – sort of a Disney version of Andre Miller, or maybe Richard Pryor as he’d be if he was played by Will Smith on tv… no, that’s not right either. How could you not like a guy like that? Even McMillan is loosening up and learning how to like people who are not all buttoned up like him.
Anyway, defense on the point is one of the principal keys to success in McMillan’s playbook, so as long as Felton brings defense he is going to make this team work quite efficiently. Look at how we dispatched the Nuggets. We are a freaking efficient machine. Bouncy chubby fun-loving Felton may be an ideal fit. Who cares if he likes muffins or donuts or whatever. Hang out in donut shops, why not, that’s a good way to make friends with cops, and if you’re a black dude in Portland you need a few friends on the force.

great andre removed beacuse he is too old, we want to play faster so we get felton, but then in a startling move we get rid of felton for nash who is older than andre and plays slower than felton….
lol why would we ever get Nash?
Nash is creaky and near retirement
I’d play him as a backup PG for for continuity’s sake with the starters. He’d be cool to have come off the bench but not for what it’d cost.
In case you all didn't notice...
it was his Week 17 NFL picks? Ha!
I sincerely and extremely doubt it...
The Blazers just traded an aging but talented PG for Felton, and to top that off, we drafted Nolan Smith. Nash has been riding off into the sunset for the past 3 seasons, at this point? His horse is dead and he’s out of water.

Our prospects for success are significantly with the roster we have, both for the short and long term.

Ben and Bill are in cahoots. If it ends up in a fanshot, Ben bumps it. If it doesn’t get fanshotted, he links it himself. He’s beginning to drop references to us like easter eggs in ever more obscure places.

If we could get Felton for Nash straight up, I would do that in a minute
Might make a lot of sense for both sides, even. Considering their respective health regimens I would guess Nash has about as much left in the tank as Felton, even at his advanced age. Get him for half this season then sign him to a Camby-esque two year deal.
If Phoenix wants any more for him (other than filler or a second round pick), I say no.
Nash is 37 Felton is 27
Felton has at least 5 years left in the tank I doubt Nash has 2.

Nash is not the player he use to be, Felton is playing great and this team plays well together.
More important Phoenix would want Batum, Felton and probably Nolan Smith. Hopefully the Blazers will let this team grow together and see how far they can go.
Portland needs a backup Center more than anything.
Kenneth Lewis Moore
He averaged 11.5 assists last season
at 36, on a wretched Suns squad. His numbers have been consistent for years. He hasn’t slowed down, the Suns are just horrible now.
"Sasha? That's a sissy name." -Mike Rice
hell no. have you watched camby play? he's beasting it.
i honestly just done care for gortat. i do like nash tho.
Yes I have
I’d rather have some youth at the center spot where the roster is the thinnest. We could afford to play Nash a max of 30 minutes/game because we have some decent backup options, but there’s nothing substantial behind Camby on the depth chart. It won’t be long before an opponent takes advantage of Camby being on the bench for half the game. Gortat gives a lot of the same defensive and rebounding ability plus he’s a threat to score on offense and he can play 35 minutes a game.
Then you should also consider Camby will likely retire after this season and the hole that’ll be left.
#7
well, we're in that boat anyway as Felton is on the last year of his contract
and there are more point guard options in the off season if Nash retires and little in the way of legit centers

Nash isn't a good fit for the Blazers as they're currently made up-
Scrappy and defensive. He would be great for us on offense for sure, and may be the best passer in the game, but his defense would require the Blazers to change their identity as a team I think.

Phoenix doesn't trade Marcin Gortat without getting Nicolas Batum back in return.
Honestly, the Suns would even be stupid to do that. Gortat is 100x the player Batum is.
Let’s hope at least one front office — such as the one in Phoenix — overvalues Batum.
"I Am Mine"
phoenix isn't looking to spend money
owner’s been cutting costs for year now, so I think they’ll go for batum on his cheap rookie contract for gortat. though they might not resign him.
you could even
add Craig Smith to soften Warrick’s loss for Phoenix.
No need to complicate things.
Just simply Gortat/Childress for Camby/Batum.
Gortat, without question, would fill the gaping hole at center.
If Portland extends Gerald Wallace, Childress is a better fit than Batum as the backup 3 through 2014-2015.

Then you never know. I must say it is odd for Simmons to go around blurting out such random assertions. The sheer oddness of it makes one wonder if there isn’t some actual substance behind it. And somehow I can see it happening near the trade deadline. Weird, huh? Right now it makes little sense but who knows what might happen. Felton or Craw gets injured, the Suns crater out and scream “REBUILDING HAS BEGUN,” Nolan turns out to have some real promise in the Suns eyes, Nash says yes I wanna play for the Blazers now!, and bingo bango bungo we’ve got the scenario: Nolan plus draft picks plus ca$h plus one other decent player, and Nash finishes his career in pdx.

Steve Nash will be traded to the Portland Trailblazers for a packet of Ramen Noodles seasoning, three pedicure coupons and a small bust of Boba Fett. Plus Shawn Marks, who will be convinced to come out of retirement for only this purpose.
Nash will then be signed for a lifetime contract which stipulates that he is allowed to bathe in the Portland reservoirs any time he wishes, as well as be provided an endless supply of Cheeze-Whiz and Ritz crackers which he will throw at the front rows of the crowd in the Rose Garden after every assist. He will donate both of his pinkies to post-partum depression research, where they will miraculously cure it. His new nickname will be “Slim Jelly Pickles”

Nash is as creative and productive as he’s ever been, and that was on a team that didn’t make the playoffs. The season before, not exactly ancient history, his team made the WCF. Where is this mysterious dropoff? Maybe this season it will finally manifest, but folks have been talking about it for years as though it had already occurred when it obviously hasn’t.

IMO Nash's stats looked better when he had Amare',
as were Felton’s (thus far, in this early campaign) when HE was with the Knicks. I think the common thread is that, although Lamarcus is an awesome talent, he’s not nearly the pick-and-roll forward that Amare’ is. I like LMA’s more complete game, an example of which is the fact that he actually plays defense, but it seems obvious to me that Amare’, although oft maligned on BEdge (our other favorite target, interestingly enough, seems to be ‘Melo), is consistently an excellent interior scorer, something, Lamarcus’ occasional outbursts in the posts aside, we havn’t had on our team since Zach left.
So, although the trade idea seems rather out of left field, it’s still a worthy debate: is Nash better than Felton for this team in terms of generating high % looks and close in chances in the paint for others? Nash is obviously a much, much better shooter than Felton. He may even be underrated in that area simply because he doesn’t take as many shots as he could. Were he to play on this team he would surely take more 3’s. He would make a lot of them too. Nash is a MUCH better passer while on the move than Felton, of course. He’s more crafty. That shouldn’t be debated.
We saw with Andre what happens when a point guard constantly has their eye on the rim for the dish as they survey the floor: ‘Oops to LMA. Galore. Will we see more of that with Felton has he acclimates? Time will tell, but his body of work on offense is about half as impressive as Nash’s. Obviously, Ray has the better defensive reputation, although I think steals are sometimes overblown in terms of judging the worth of a guard on that side of the court. Andre didn’t get tons of steals, but he was smart and pretty versatile. He also got a lot of deflections.
So it’s a fun debate, really, a fantasy league type of discussion because it seems incredibly unlikely that the Blazers would swing this deal now. All-in-all, I like what I’ve seen from Felton so far. I’m a little surprised by some his silly decisions with the ball, but he’s the type of point guard that will continue to get better with this team. His shooting should level off and be respectable too.

…that the fast pace we’ve seen is Nate trying to prove that he’s a versatile coach and could handle Nash on the team. How long have these rumors been circling? Seems like forever, and every time there’s a debate in the comment section about how Nate would never coach a fast paced team…yet here we are.
