Jason Quick of The Oregonian reports that the Portland Trail Blazers have broached the subject of a contract extension with the agent of forward Gerald Wallace.
------------------------------
[Blazers Acting GM Chad] Buchanan said he has had introductory conversations with Wallace's agent, Rob Pelinka, about a contract extension. Second, Courtney, his 32-year-old brother, said Wallace no longer views Portland as a foreign country.

"He loves it here," Courtney said. "It was pretty tough at first, but now it's like home. He likes the fans the most. The fans pump him up and make him better."

Thanks for posting this!

I hope that Wallace stays here for a long time, and that his toughness continues to endure the beating he puts his body through in every game.

Huh?

The furthest out Portland can extend him is to the 2014-2015 season.

Just get Wallace to exercise his player option early and then tack on two more seasons at a base salary of $9.5 million to his current deal.

I'd rather extend Batum to a Matthews level deal.

And deal Camby, Williams, picks/rights to Victor Claver and cash for Okafor. Then make a run from there.

by thankyouforblaze on Jan 1, 2012 1:18 AM PST up reply actions

We have room for a max contract if we let Felton, Crawford, Camby, and Oden all walk away.

We are at $42M (assuming Batum extends for about $6.5M) if Wallace doesn’t opt-out or signs an extension and we renounce everyone else. What superstar do you think wants to come to Portland to play with LMA and Wallace?

The more likely scenario is that we don’t renounce anyone, let Camby walk, and stay over the cap. Then we offer Felton a new deal using the early-Bird exception if we still like him (that’s plenty to resign him if he wants to stay), offer Crawford $6M a year after he opts-out if we still want him (the most we can offer), bring over Joel Freeland with the MLE (which we only have because we are over the cap), and shoot the moon in an attempt to get to Oden to re-sign if he comes back healthy. That seems more likely than letting everyone walk and hope we can get a superstar to come to PDX. We can also try to trade Camby’s expiring contract and Batum for a star player before the trade deadline and still make any or all of those over the cap moves this summer.

At this point, I'd rather take a shot at trying to find a max contract level player however small it may be.

As the roster is constructed right now, we are in serious need for an A level talent. Even though we are a small market team, our situation is better than lot of the teams that will have enough cap space to offer a max contract. Perhaps situation grows sour enough in OKC for Westbrook to leave. Or, NJ cannot pull a deal for a second all-star and Deron Williams bolt.

Even if we sign no one with that cap room, it’s not like that is a disaster. Then, we can use the cap room to take on bad deals and gather picks and assets, which is what this team needs going forward. While I agree the best scenario is to trade for an all-star with Camby’s contract + young assets, having enough cap room for a max contract is preferable than going forward by overpaying Batum (my biggest fear at this point is we give Batum something dumb like 4 year, $40 million+) or Wallace or keep hanging our hat on Greg for a recovery.

The cake was a lie.

by xedubx on Dec 29, 2011 4:59 PM PST up reply actions

If you get a max contract super-star it could be worth it, but if you don't

you only have $16M to play with. With that you have to sign a center, re-sign or replace Felton, and re-sign or replace Crawford, all for $16M. That’s stretching the cap space pretty far. What we do will probably depend on how much the Blazers want to retain Crawford and Felton, and how much they want to take another shot at Oden.

by BlazerFanSince1970 on Dec 30, 2011 1:17 PM PST up reply actions

Cap space is more than just "nice" in today's NBA

It hasn’t materialized yet, with the benefits of the amnesty clause yet to be exhausted by most teams, but we will, in the near future, start to see more and more trades like the one that sent Kyrie Irving and Baron Davis to Cleveland, or Mehmet Okur to New Jersey.

And, frankly, your remark that none of the top FA’s will want to come to Portland is basically a straw man. Even those who really want the Blazers to try and sign a max-salary worthy player understand that cap space can be used in much more dynamic ways than merely through FA signings.

by 420Phenom on Dec 30, 2011 11:00 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, there's no sure path to becoming a contender any more with Roy gone.

If you put all your eggs in one basket trying to get another super-star player, you still have to wait to replace the pieces you lose even in the unlikely event you get that super-star. If you don’t get him, you may really be screwed for what you lost in that attempt (see NJ). On the other hand, if you add Oden and Joel Freeland to the current team you might be getting close, or Oden never comes back and you sit in mediocrity.

You know..yes Roy was a great player. But the Blazers weren't contenders with him.

When he was playing well.
Perhaps the team as is is actually better than one with a healthy Roy.
I for one like watching an entire TEAM play.
It may not be as easy for other teams to scout when one player isn’t the obvious choice for whatever….
I actually think that the Blazers have a good chance to get out of the first round this year.
I like Wallace and want him to stay.
And Felton seems just fine.
So does JC
I wish Camby was younger and stronger because he is great at teaching and coaching…hope he stays with the organization (coach) and just retires as a Blazer,
Would be great if the Blazers could somehow get a good center and not have to sell the farm when Camby retires. Keep Camby at the Veteran’s minimum and bring over Freeman?

It's a contract year for Wallace

and you’re going to see him playing lights out for much of the season. That being said, do you think he will keep that pace up once an extension is signed? I’m not saying Wallace will eventually slack, but a players’ body can only take so much abuse, and I don’t see a guy his age being able to play at this pace for multiple years. I’d love it if he proved me wrong though.

Just another smart move by management

This is all about gathering as much information as you can before making offers.

As they are supposedly in negotation with Nico right now, it only makes sense to begin the conversation about the most likely alternative. If by talking to his agent you know Crash will sign a max deal if offered, you can factor that into the decision re: Batum’s offer. If you know Crash is gone… maybe that changes what you;re willing to give Nic.

It doesn’t hurt, either, for Nico’s camp to know that the Blazers may have a very good alternative, so Nico would be less likely to play hardball…

- Signed Kurt Thomas (for the min?)
- Signed the Rhino (for the min?)

All deals which don’t cripple the club, and give us ultimate flexibility next year?

Basically, they built a deep, tough, hard-working, hustling TEAM. and seem to be working to achieve long-term excellence by adding Nico and Crash to the Aldridge/Matthews family.

of course, it doesn't matter

if they do the right thing. I have no problem with the Crash/Nic/LMA core program.
I think what PA wants is someone who does all the research and brings in the compelling arguements of what can/needs to be done. He is living the fantasy lots of us have when we suggest trades/draft choices. We (hopefully) listen, learn, even research, and develop opinions to make the team better. And, he WANTS to believe. Just make an exciting case. Of course, what can be better than excitement on the court and the Rose Garden jumping (when are L@kers comming to town ?). Yeah, we want to keep Wallace, and I am on the Batum bandwagon as well. I am really amped about current developments, including ‘new’ Nate. The Blazers are fun again.

Cho traded for Gerald

otherwise I agree

though they did not draft Faried which makes me sad :(

Me too.

But we have a chance for Mike Moser next year, who is far more versatile & every bit the aggressor on the boards. Also, he is from Portland.

whose running the show ?

PA is always running the show, in the sense of final decision, but he delegates the research, scouting, CBA analysis, and basically has a panel bring together the plan, which if exciting enough for our ‘’fan owner" sold! He has declared that he needs to be engaged, which is cool.
So the guys putting together the plan are critical to creating a good vision. It could well be that Chad and the scouts have a good dynamic going that produces good plans.
Nate is in there too. And now we seem to have ’new Nate’, who may be breaking out of some rigid constraints, perhaps by necessity, but for whatever reason, a welcome change I hope continues. I don’t think PA wants some guy to come in and ‘take over’.

For all we know management is just trying to keep Wallace happy

I am sure he wasn’t thrilled to be mentioned in the Orlando trade rumors, best way for management to mend fences is to engage in contract extension talks. They know if he mopes and doesn’t play well his trade value isn’t likely to increase (although I think we all agree GW be too much of a pro to go that route).

I would much rather have GW/Batum than GW/Matthews. Of course, I don’t have much confidence that Batum will really blossom until he has a coach that will let him play and make mistakes.

Also, GW isn’t exactly a “skill” player. I think his productivity will drop off drastically when his body starts to age, which would make me reluctant to sign him to a longer term deal, even if the short term returns are as good as they have been through the first 2 games.

by lil'stink on Dec 28, 2011 9:12 PM PST reply actions

Signing Batum = big mistake

We should sign Wallace, trade Batum, and make a max offer to lure Kevin Love to return home. We have a ton of cap space next year and a “potential” in Batum who would be a mistake to throw big money at. We have a legit opportunity to land a big time player next year to pair with the rest of our roster. Crash fits into that picture perfectly as well.

by twbivens on Dec 28, 2011 10:07 PM PST reply actions

I have thought Kevin Love would fit well next to LMA

Put LMA at the 5 and Love at the 4. But I hate Kevin from his high school days, so I have moved away from that a bit.

by AR-15 on Dec 28, 2011 10:10 PM PST up reply actions

I'd like Kris Kardashian-Humphries or Smoove for that role

Smoove, especially, would be awesome in between Crash and LMA. The few banger 5’s in the NBA (Bynum, Bogut, Nene, Dwight) might hurt us, but no other team could score on that frontcourt.

I don't know that I agree on the title

But I’d love some Kevin Love. I really thought he’d be a flop when he was drafted, but I’ve since been fairly impressed.

"The game was delayed for over 15 minutes with 5:07 left in the second quarter after France's Nicolas Batum, who plays for the Portland Trail Blazers, dunked and twisted the rim. Volunteers and officials scrambled to put a new rim on the basket and reattach a net."

Have to believe this is a press move coming from Wallace’s camp, or some knee-jerk mop job after the reported trade. Signing Wallace to any sort of long term deal for even what he’s making now is a bad move. This guy is only going to get worse after this year, and a guy like Wallace does not age well in the NBA. He has played extremely well in two games this year against teams who play terrible defense. He also disappeared in games 1 – 5 of the playoffs last year.

sighhh

why???

we can do it this summer once we figure out what else we can get in free agency.

PHILLY!

As long as this doesn't hurt flexibility for the summer, it sounds great

What does the extension deadline look like for GW, since he has an option year?

Blazers got to deal with Crash before Batum

This will really be the first test run with no true GM….these will be tricky with Batum and Crash both needing deals. Not sure we can keep both, fit-wise.

I think Wallace is Nate’s ideal SF and how can you not love what he does on the court. I am not sure Batum will ever become more than a nice fit SF, good player-but not a difference maker/game changer night to night.

by breakerfall on Dec 29, 2011 7:25 AM PST reply actions

Exactly.

To use a Simmons analogy, Batum is change and our cap space could allow us to acquire a dollar bill type player – which is what we need if we truly want a title shot. His potential and age makes him a good trade option, and Wallace’s age and proven talent makes him an excellent piece for our 2-3 year run, provided we can land a Love/Westbrook/etc dollar bill. Time to go for it with a big name and stop hyping our guys with potential.

by twbivens on Dec 29, 2011 8:27 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

Huh....

I love Wallace. And he is playing All-Star lights out right now. I’m not against him being a Blazer for a longer period of time BUT….

I think right now? You’re buying high. A player looks good, is playing well, and many fans always start chanting to lock the guy into a long term deal or extension. I think with Wallace you must factor in his age, and his playing style. The same factors that make him a great player, are the same factors that I think will make his game fade fast as he ages. You simply cannot play the game Wallace plays as an older player…

Right now? Wallace is in his prime. I think he has 2 maybe 3 more years at this level or near. But as much as I like him, I wouldn’t want to commit to more than 2…possible 3 years.

by Krang on Dec 29, 2011 10:45 AM PST reply actions

buying high of a player in his prime 'happens'

At some point we have to stop ‘trading for the future’ if what we have is working, and Wallace is certainly working with Nate and team, which is huge. I am hoping Gerald and Nic will establish a good dynamic on the court, with Nic 2 or 3 depending on lineups. Time should tell. Our team is more fun than most now, and Wallace is a critical (‘core’) piece of that. Plus, he seems happy here, which should help a bit too, as far as not squeezing out every penny contract time (as unbelievable as this may be to some, money is not everything).

by Berkeley on Dec 31, 2011 12:52 PM PST up reply actions

The option year is Wallace's.

Signing him gives us the ability to keep him or trade him with an in-place contract, which is more valuable to us – and the team we might trade him to. After all, if you don’t resign him now, what happens if he decides not to pick up his option?

As far as trading/not trading Batum, it looks to me like it may be a Matthews vs. Batum decision – particularly if Batum plays a lot more 2. Ideally, we want a player who’s solid playing both the 2 & 3. Saves money.

In any case, Batum has gotten plenty of playing time since drafted. He was the designated starter the first couple of years at SF. When Webster went down he was a rookie no one knew who was gifted the starting role at SF. Only since we picked up Wallace has this become more of an issue.

by ebenc on Dec 29, 2011 10:48 AM PST reply actions

Sign Gerald to a long term deal, try to give Batum alot of run this year to showcase

his skills and up his trade value. Then trade Batum, at the very least we could score a high draft pick for him. I know a top 5 was offered for him before. Then draft/trade for a solid big to team up with LMA. This is probably why I am not a GM but I think Batum will never hit his ceiling with GW here because the Predator is just too good to not get minutes.
