Yesterday's Box Score
Wow, a pace factor of 100.
100 possessions per 48 minutes, eh.
Well, I'll be damned. Color me surprised.
Yet, I don't expect that this'll continue.
We shall see, though. We shall see.

Now, if this lasts the whole season, I'm calling it a "Reverse Riley" by Nate McMillan.
After Pat Riley left the Los Angeles Lakers for the New York Knicks, he changed his stripes from being head coach of the up-tempo “Showtime” Lakers in the 1980s to general of the rough-and-tumble ’90s-era Knicks.
Again, if this does actually occur, people need to understand how rare this is for a head coach to completely reverse philosophy when it comes to pace. This happens once in a blue moon. I’m still not sold on it, either.

A Reverse Riley; funny stuff AK.
It seems Rick Adleman could almost qualify, with the Blazers, Kings and Rockets. But that might be closer to being flexible or utilitarian rather than a complete reversal of philosophy.
ah, the ole' utilitarian style of basketball

Sure, Rick Adelman has altered his offensive sets some over the years. Yet, even though Adelman ...
has gone from the flex offense in Portland to the Princeton offense in Sacramento to the so-called hybrid “corner” offense in Minnesota, he’s always been an up-tempo coach when it comes to pace. Adelman, therefore, has never made a wholesale change in philosophy throughout his decades as a head coach.
"I Am Mine"
so which is more likely...
mcmillan switching to an uptempo offense or d’antoni switching to a grind it out half court offense?

Reverse Riley sounds like a kama sutra position.
Porter, Drexler, Kersey, Williams, Duckworth. The greatest starting 5 ever.

what did we average last year?
around 90, right?
yeah, these guys like to get up the court a bit more than last year. and a bit being a lot.

Im Curious
Why not bring him off the bench to allieviate some minutes for aldrige.
I like the Rhino, I like him even more when he plays

I think we will see a lot of different lineups this season
I would bet Rhino gets some pretty decent playing time tonight to frustrate DeMarcus. I think you will see a lot of guys play heavy minutes one night and then not so much the next all year long as a strategy to keep guys fresh for the large amount of back to backs.
If you throw out all the OT games
The last time we ran like that was 93… good year if I remember.
yup

I thought Portland looked best when they were running
I wondered if they have been spending more time developing their transition game (which, for the most part, looked good) instead of their half-court offense. When they slowed it down, I saw LaMarcus doing the same old “hold the ball, wait for the double team, wait, wait, pass to perimeter player 5 ft away who launches a three as the clock is about to expire” play a few times.
Apparently not giving up on Brandon or Greg paid no dividends. Whatever... Go Blazers!!!
If you have been paying attention
Nate was running a 15 minute shot clock in practices to ensure the guys would be use to running a faster pace offense.
How lame would basketball be if there was a fifteen minute shot clock.
We’d see games ending in 4-4 ties.
I don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way.

Yeah this is pretty amazing
Nate did say something along the lines of “you let your PG dictate your pace”. That would make some sense.
Maybe Nate is learning a couple new tricks
Also, Dre could run but he wasn’t the fastest horse in the race. I remember watching us try to run quite a few times where Dre had to pull back into the half court offense because the advantage just wasn’t there.
Also of note:
We actually won 3 of the 4 factors, not 2 as some people said last night.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
Well, Portland barely won the FT/FGA battle.
And that was ’cause Philly had to foul at the end.
"I Am Mine"
True, but those late game fouls contributed to the win.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
didn't Nate play for and coach under George Karl?
Nate may have learned something from Karl.
Red means run, son, numbers add up to nothin
He got his offensive leanings from Bernie Bickerstaff and his defensive leanings from Bob Kloppenburg.
George Karl came to the Sonics later in McMillan’s career. He’d already played for two other head coaches, Bickerstaff and K.C. Jones, by that point.
"I Am Mine"
Sounds about right, although I'm waiting for Basketball-Reference to toss up tonight's box score.
In any case, the win against the Kings this evening did feel like it was played at a medium-tempo pace.
As the season trudges along, that opening-night up-and-down affair will probably end up being an outlier.
Then again, the next matchup is against the notoriously run-and-gun Denver Nuggets. That’ll be interesting.
"I Am Mine"
Officially, 89.8 is the pace factor for last night's contest.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/201112270POR.html
That’s just in the slow-paced threshold range of sub-90 possessions per 48 minutes.
Could still call it a medium-tempo game, though, since the speed fluctuated throughout.
"I Am Mine"
Can they break it into halves?
I only started watching the game from almost the end of the 2nd quarter (when the Blazers put on their little run to even the scores at the half), but they seemed to play at a fairly brisk tempo in that second half.

It's been mentioned before somewhere else-
but the slower pace of this game could be attributed to conditioning and coming off a back-to-back. I know it’s not going to change the numbers, but it’s good to consider when we are trying to work out how this team plays.

Hmmm...
I always thought pace was calculated as follows:
Shots – Offensive Rebounds + Turnovers + (0.4 x FTs)
85 – 15 + 10 + 11.2 = 91.2
Well, researching on basketball-reference, I found my answer:
Pace = 48 * ((Tm Poss + Opp Poss) / (2 * (Tm MP / 5)))
Coincidentally, the pace as calculated by my previous calculation for Game 1 turned out to be 99.6. Pretty dang close to 100.0.
What does it say about me that when I saw the Blazers running, I thought of you, AK?
It’ll be interesting to see if this lasts, that’s for sure.

Rec-
for the humility. ’Onya AK… we might just make a Blazer optimist out of you yet :)
