We have all watched with sadness as Brandon Roy has been forced by his degenerative knees to retire from basketball. The Portland Trail Blazers now find themselves with a need. No, not a crunch time perimeter shot creator, a role we are all hoping, with varying levels of confidence (or lack thereof), will be filled by Jamal Crawford. No, not a franchise face of which we can all be proud; LaMarcus Aldridge should be able to fill those shoes.
The role to which I am referring is that of team captain. With Roy's retirement, the team currently has but one player, Aldridge, on the roster who has been designated as a captain. Although the title itself is perhaps mostly honorary (and entirely unimportant), especially in the case of player who will almost undoubtedly be second-in-command to Aldridge, the subject may make for some fun and interesting discussion of how we, as fans, view the informal leadership structure of the team as it is currently assembled.
Who do you think should be named a team captain for the 2011-12 season? Should it be the team's elder statesman extraordinaire, Marcus Camby? Our clear-cut second option, but possible trade bait, Gerald "Crash" Wallace? Or should it be the team's new floor-general, Raymond Felton, known to be a vocal leadership presence both on the court and in the locker room?
