What can you say about Rudy Fernandez
What can you tell me about him? Was he a good player for your team? A wrong fit? Implemented wrong by your coach? Does he have any nicknames and do you think he will play well in the Nuggets offense? -A Nuggets fan.

He is a prime example of a lack of humility
Blazers fans loved this guy and all he did was pout and spit in our face every chance he gets, he is a good player, but unfortunately he is unable to play in an NBA system because he believes that he is a superstar
La Illaha Illallah Muhamadur Rasulallah
I don't really remember him spitting in our faces...
but Rudy didn’t live up to expectations. He had a great start, but got an ugly injury toward the end of his rookie season (Ariza undercut him on a fast break, eventually leading to back surgery). He never seemed the same afterward.
It reached a point later where his agent (often his overseas agent, he has one here and one there) would call for him to play more, saying he spoke on Rudy’s behalf. The problem was, Rudy simply wasn’t playing well enough to earn playing time. Some people were really frustrated with the situation. Blazer fans rooted for him early (tons of RUUUUDY shouts) but as Rudy’s management complained, the fans turned on him. It was best that he moved along, and the team obliged.
He had a good Summer though. No idea how he’s going to look this season.
True though I its more technical than personal
Rudy is a perfect example of a player that is close to being a top 15 talent at his position but isnt willing to develop the added fundementals. A Sprewell first step and side step along with a decent midrange game would do wonders for the guy. His horrible midrange game and his lack of off the dribble moves will always keep him from being the player he thinks he is.

spitting in our faces! Thats a little harsh bro dont cha think? Rudy had legit reasons to bail in my opinion. 1.No playing time 2.we have a defensive minded coach and hes a totally offensive minded player 3.Back surgery recovery plagued him forever 4.No playing time sitting bench 5. make 1 mistake no playing time sitting bench…..sitting bench did I mention no playing time! Hes better off somewhere else and more power to him. I liked him and I still do and I wish him the best. I wish he coulda worked out for us, when he came over here I was totally excited. Anyways, I was bummed to see him go, but I know its for the best.

Come on revisited
Sure, it’s a little chicken and egg scenario, but Rudy plays the 2 guard. Brandon Roy plays the 2 guard. Brandon Roy was injured A LOT! Rudy didn’t get more minutes because he didn’t do much with the minutes he did get.
All sizzle and no steak about sums it up.
Though him running with Lawson should be fun.

Rudy is a delicate flower
Sneeze in his direction and one of three things may happen:
1. He could go completely crazy and shoot 90% for like 20pts.
2. He could go completely crazy and shoot 15% for 6pts.
3. He could go completely crazy and have his agent demand a buyout so he can go back to Spain.
You’re pretty much looking at crazy all the way around.
In the right spot, on the right team
Rudy can flourish, I still believe that. Karls style should benefit Rudys game allot, allowing him to be what he is- an offense first type of player. The Blazers have always been overloaded at certain positions and undermanned in others which inevitably leads to the development of some and the stagnation of others. Rudy fell into the stagnate category, thus meaning he was playing behind our then superstar BRoy and basically was fighting for minutes behind BRoy, not to mention recovering from back surgery. Any team where Rudys position isnt a superstar player ahead of him, he will do well. Any team where the coach leans more towards offense instead of defense, Rudy can flourish. I still think Rudy is a good player and I stand by it even though he has yet to prove me right. Again, in the right spot on the right team, Rudy can flourish. I was always hoping he would be our Manu Ginobili or something, maybe he can be yours…

I think he will play well with Karl if he can find confidence in his shot
but good riddance on him being a Blazer. He was a constant offseason distraction, enough to seemingly make the Mav’s want to get rid of him before he even played for them.
Pouting
His agent would whine for him in the press and cause all sorts of fan fallout. The best clash was when the Blazers wouldn’t waive Rudy’s last two years on his contract and allow him to go back to Spain.
Mr. European Agent seemed to think a direct appeal to the fan base would help Rudy’s case….didn’t we understand that Rudy wasn’t a machine and that it was inhumane to hold him to a contract that he no longer wanted to fulfill?
Evidently Mr. European Agent didn’t understand that US fans don’t look at labor status and law like a European Socialist State.
Down with the Ruskies
In answer to your question:
He is an unorthodox and intermittently very effective player. He is an excellent passer, particularly when it comes to feeding the post (I bet you he has better court vision than Ty Lawson) but is hampered by a rather average handle. This means that he is no good at penetrating. If he starts dribbling back and forth I guarantee it’ll end in a step-back three. But the good news is, he makes a lot of those, and sometimes at opportune moments. He also makes a fair number of effort plays – digging out an important rebound (he plays SF for Spain often and gets surprisingly good board numbers) or getting a key steal (he plays the passing lanes very well). He can also finish a back-door alley-oop with the best of them (hello Andre Miller) thanks to very good timing and good finishing abilities.
He is very… sensitive, though. His confidence can be easily shot. Not by the opposition (see: dunk on Dwight Howard) but by his teammates and the fans. If he plays for you and George Karl plays old-fashioned George Karl style, he could easily become a fan fave. Until he goes back to Real Madrid at the end of the season.

I don't remember Rudy finishing very many alley-oops
after Sergio left Portland
Nice overview. If Fernandez hadn’t been stuck behind Roy, he might have had a much-better time of it in a Blazer uniform. Not a McMillian-system player, still the RG ladies loved him

Anybody want
To buy my #5 jersey? Cheap. Portland fans were really good to Rudy. In the end, Nate lost confidence, Rudy lost confidence and we just gave up. He made some amazing plays. I think he just needs to play in a system where he plays steady with a clearly defined role.
I will surely miss those running pick and rolls with Lamarcus
Yea Rudy had an amazing rookie year, but as others pointed out not enough PT and that Ariza back incident really hindered his progress. He seemed to not be the same after that fall.
He should be an awesome nba player by now, but is merely avg. at this point. I think a new system will probably get him going again. He will do you guys some good for sure.
"There are a lot of computers in Portland and a lot of people with time on their hands, or who are passionate enough about their Blazers to make time. After several years of writing about basketball on fake paper, that's a conclusion I will fight to the death to defend. It's a small city, and yet no fanbase so passionately and so adroitly makes its presence felt in this sphere." Word.
He needs to be screened
After we lost Pryzbilla, we lost the best screener we had, and we completely lost Rudy’s scoring. Rudy cannot get his own shot, but was forced to do so in Portland. His Rookie season was also the time when Brandon Roy would suck in the defense, leading to open 3 Pt shots for Rudy.
I’m not saying that this is the only reason why Rudy started heaving Bricks in Portland. I think there was more to his game than shooting — he was a good passer that would sometimes turn the ball over in a flash way!
He could be a great fit for someone in a limited role, but he is dependent on other teammates helping him get his shot.
This is true
It’s a good thing for Rudy and Denver that they brought back Nene. But they lack a guy who can consistently draw double teams. That will hurt Rudy.

Kurt Thomas was setting some screens tonight

He sucked after Sergio left
Can’t create his own shot, good help defender, poor ball handler, excellent passer… in the right system with right players he can flourish
Great shooter who went through a slump. Good court vision.
Hops but no first step. Not very strong or physical. Works very hard to make rotations on defense and gets into passing lanes well. Hustles. His team defense partially makes up for his liabilities as an on-ball defender and helplessness in the post. Gets his shots via off-ball movement and spotting up, not much off the dribble. Needs to work on his mid-range game and stop shooting lame runners. Good in the open court. Very mercurial and fun to watch when he’s got it dialed in.
Can only play the 2 in the NBA.

Good point.
I’ve never understood why guys are so afraid to develop the off hand. It can do wonders for one’s ability to finish.
The Dos Equis guy lives life like Chip Kelly calls plays.
The short version.
Upsides:
- Outstanding passer with above-average court vision.
- Very, very effective moving without the ball.
- Provided he doesn’t take too much contact, can finish around the rim in a variety of different ways.
- Surprisingly good defender for his size. Not great but he works hard.
Downsides:
- Frail for a shooting guard.
- Big time “hot hand” shooter. Has confidence issues unless he has the ball in his hands often enough to get going. You’ll love him one game and tear your hair out the next.
- From a purely defensive standpoint, he can’t guard anything but the 1 or 2 spots.
- Worst of all, you never know what you’re getting from night to night. His worst flaw of all is a lack of consistency.
"You know, when you are in the game, you hear 20,000 people behind you, you don't feel anything."
- Nicolas Batum on playing through his shoulder injury during the 2010 playoffs.
A lot of fun to watch when he was in his little zone
but too many inconsistent nights and a bad attitude just made start to really dislike a player I once considered a favorite on the team. He has his moments of greatness but makes careless mistakes and often loses his shooting ability when he needs it most. Remenber those terrible playoff series perfomances? Ugh.
Round 2 is just a Mav-stomping away
as a playoff performer
Rudy was the Cliff Robinson of his generation
