The New plan for the future!

It has started with the retirement of a great Star in Roy. Oden's injury was not exactly unexpected but it doesn't change anything, we must rebuild now and set ourselves up for a run in 3-5 years. To do that I think we have to trade Wallace for, hopefully, an unprotected draft pick from a team under the cap. Like the Kings, who also could use a good SF that they also drafted way back in the day. Why trade Wallace cause we can at least hope to get something out of him before he bolts in free agency, if he opts out that is. I for one don't believe that he will opt out, cause he'll likely not get $9.5million next summer will he? He could just defer his free agent status for another year which will limit our cap space next summer to go after Deron Williams. If he doesn't want to come we could offer Nash a one year $10million deal and complement that group with a top role player or two. Basically it gives us options if Wallace's contract is off the books and why shouldn't we try and get something from him instead of letting him go for nothing like RLFEC.

Do you it would make sense to trade Gerald Wallace or just keep him until his contract runs out?

Im not against trading Wallace

But not for a draft pick. If you add Crash to the Kings who’s to say they’re still a lottery team. Remember trading Bayless to the Hornets? That was supposed to be a pitting pick too. How’d that one turn out? In a shortened season where anything can happen, heck, the Kings could win a title this year. Plus, why would the Kings give a potential lottery pick for a guy who could bolt at the end of the year. Lastly, how does offering Nash a 1yr/10mil contract help us rebuild for the future?

to be fair

it wasn’t Bayless who put them over the top

you know next season we can add one max player and others at the same time

we will be 24 million under the cap and to people who say star don’t want to come here, money makes people go anywhere

Its not cheating, more like circumventing rules.

If three individual free agents want to play together, that is collusion but there aren’t any rules to say they can’t do it.

I love the deep draft class, but I love GW more.

And while we are speaking of Bayless, I want him back.

I'd be down.

But only if Nolan a) doesn’t pan out, or b) is traded for something really nice.

Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!

If you can get a lottery pick, I say we have to think about it.

Its not worth it otherwise.

Two problems trading Crash for picks.

1) After the 2006 draft. Other than Batum, the Blazer’s draft picks are performing below average..
2) Coach Nate does not develop young players. Coach wants cagy veterans, like, well, Crash.

by oldfishermen on Dec 12, 2011 8:32 PM PST reply actions

The thing with Nate that perhaps he doesn't get yet is that

his coaching style is best suited for a young team, he teaches fundamentals well but fails miserably to making adjustments in a Playoff series. If we had a team capable of winning the title I’d want to see Nate go and bring another coach that has Playoff experience but now that we are back into a rebuilding stage I can’t think of a better coach than Nate to be the one in charge.
Of course I wouldn’t want us to trade Wallace for any old pick, only a lottery pick preferably which a good chance to get one of the top 5 picks in the 2012 draft. Gerald will not want to be involved in another rebuilding effort so why keep him if he isn’t going to be happy?

I agree with you, however, have come to a different conclusion

Nate is a good teacher of the fundamentals. However, he does not give the young players the game time necessary to develop those fundamentals. He plays his veterans into the ground rather than let his young players work through the development process, which is making mistakes during a game. Nate may have the patience to teach fundamentals, but he does not have the patience to develop fundamentals. It would take a very high draft pick to force Nate to give a rookie enough game time to develop his fundamentals.

I also agree with you concerning Nate’s playoff record. I have said it for several years. Nate can not think fast enough on his feet to make adjustments during a playoff game. During the regular season, Nate can get away with pounding square pegs into round holes. However, his coaching style does not work in the playoffs.

Then there is the Blazers record for picking in the draft. I have lost confidences in our scouts to find players that can make a good transition into the NBA. Their record the last 5 years is horrible.

I would rather keep Crash than let the Blazers GM committee make the #5 pick in the lottery. Then let Nate refuse to develop that player. With Crash, we know what we have. Crash is a darn good veteran SF that works hard, and does not make mistakes. Just want Nate needs in both the regular season and the playoffs. The odds of the Blazers picking a better player than Crash, then Nate developing that player to be better than Crash are very small.

I doubt Nate will ever get it. He is one stubborn coach.
