STATEMENTS FROM BRANDON ROY, PAUL ALLEN AND LARRY MILLER REGARDING BRANDON ROY

BRANDON ROY
"This is a very difficult and painful day. I love the game, I love the Portland Trail Blazers and I love our fans, but after consulting with my doctors, I will seek a determination that I've suffered a career ending injury, pursuant to the rules of the collective bargaining agreement.

"My family and health are most important to me and in the end this decision was about them and my quality of life. I want to thank Paul Allen, Larry Miller, Coach McMillan, the entire Trail Blazers organization and our fans for all of their love and support during my time in Portland. It was a great ride."

PAUL ALLEN
"Like every Blazer fan, I am very sad to learn that Brandon's playing days have ended. Up until Thursday night we were looking forward to seeing him back on the court Friday for the first day of practice.

"I want to personally thank Brandon for all he's done as a Trail Blazer, on and off the court. He is a true All-Star and we all rooted for him as he gave us so many amazing moments during his five years as a Blazer."

LARRY MILLER
"Brandon Roy will always be a Trail Blazer in our hearts and minds. He was an All-Star and a warrior every night that he stepped on the court and gave everything he had to help us win. He was a role model on and off the court, and through his leadership he turned us into a winning franchise once again."

Where's the pic from?

Is that his house, or where did AP get that?

It's at his house

taken yesterday, Dec 9th.

In my mind that shot, with his head down, projects resignation to reality and makes me a lil veklempt honestly.

Of course, if he were still playing I’d hope he was looking down to make sure he didn’t tweak anything on that pavement edge.

This whole thing feels so wrong. In about 18 months he went from perennial All-Star and All-NBA player to retiring from injuries. Definitely not deserved. We will miss you Brandon! Thank you for everything!

In my heart, Brandon Roy is the greatest Blazer ever.

From rookie year on, he carried this team, as well as the spirit of this city. His humanity was his undoing, and for that I can only love him more. Thank you for bringing pride back to our city, Brandon. We will never forget.

I begged in debates here on BE

To let BRoy’s knees be the desiding factor as to rather he plays or not. I said if he shows up and can’t play then so be it. we will go on from there.

Is this another case of be careful of what you wished for?

No offense..

but I think you were a little oblivious to the situation. I think most of us knew of his condition because we all read and trusted what the doctors have been saying.

He wasn’t going to have a long career whether he continued to play here in Portland or not.

by Dustructo on Dec 10, 2011 10:39 AM PST up reply actions

I love how saying “no offense” gives free license to be offensive. I don’t think anybody who frequents this site was oblivious to Roy’s condition or the likely outcome.

by 52therim on Dec 10, 2011 12:36 PM PST via mobile up reply actions   1 recs

I've read a lot of BBK's posts...

…as well as others and he’s far from oblivious. He’s even experienced serious knee issues himself.

By your definition I was oblivious too. While I knew the diagnosis I chose to wait and see for myself. I hoped that by some combination of miracle and determination my favorite Blazer would resurrect himself and give me some more Roy, Joy.

It didn’t happen and I… and I’m sure BBK… am disappointed. What does it accomplish for you to verbally stick your tongue out at us? Does it make you feel smarter?.. More of a knowledgeable fan?..

I’m serious… What is your point?

#7... GO BLAZERS!!!

by Ilikeemall on Dec 10, 2011 7:51 PM PST up reply actions

The point is...

don’t let blind love dictate ones opinion, especially when facts are presented by professionals. He responded to my posts negatively when I was saying they should absolutely amnesty Roy, but I guess that was ok.

All I was saying is that there are no miracles, even if we want it to be true, logic conquers all. However, that was ignored which in the end = oblivious. I know it sounds like a hateful word, which is why I prefaced it with a “no offense” which I will take responsibility for because that’s just asking for hateful responses.

by Dustructo on Dec 10, 2011 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

There ARE miracles...

…and I am sad for you that you don’t believe in them.

Game 4 was a miracle… 35’ Buzzer Beater against Houston…miracle (actually 2 in that game). Drive and score on the Knicks as the Clock ran out, again, miracle. #7 going off on the Suns for 52pts on 27 shots with 5 rebs, 6asts and ZERO turnover…miracle. …and there are so many more.

The point is that…speaking for myself… I will base my opinions of GAMES on blind love, sticky sweet devotion or a freakin Magic 8 Ball if I want to and none of your cold hard facts or logic will change that. This site welcomes all types of fans in a intelligent forum devoid…to the most part… of personal attacks. Saying no offense but you’re oblivious can be taken no other way then personal.

Logic doesn’t conquer all in sport… and neither does being condescending and calling people oblivious because they don’t see things the way you think they should.

#7... GO BLAZERS!!!

by Ilikeemall on Dec 10, 2011 11:19 PM PST up reply actions

The dude had a condition...

in which was “degenerative”! No cartilage, case closed. I’m sorry, but human beings don’t regenerate meniscus and if you believe otherwise than you are crazy. If you believe everything is going to fine and that person will return to form you are crazy. This wasn’t even my opinion, this was the obvious truth setfourth by doctors. To ignore it would be absurd and deliberately oblivious. Didn’t mean the guy harm but after he responded to me earlier week(where were you for me?) I couldn’t help but answer his rhetorical question with something that should have been clear to anybody that wasn’t looking the other direction. Not really a big deal, but then again I’m not the type that get’s offended or comes to peoples rescue.

Game 4 wasn’t impossible, improbable but not impossible. People don’t recover from stuff like this because it’s not possible.

You can live in the land of make believe where people ride unicorns, fly faster than speeding bullets, worship effigies(wait that does happen)…frankly, I don’t care, but that doesn’t mean I can’t share my opinion and thoughts that contradict the insanity and often blatant neglect of what’s real.

by Dustructo on Dec 10, 2011 11:50 PM PST up reply actions

Thanks for your blessing...

I will continue to live in a land of hope and believe in miracles. I will also attempt to follow the rules of this site and not make personal attacks…

Sharing your opinion doesn’t have to include calling individuals crazy or oblivious.

The next time I’m cruisin’ around on my unicorn going faster than a speeding bullet and worshiping effigies (whatever the heck that means in this context…) I’ll be thinking of people tethered to reality by fact and logic…. and I’ll feel sorry for them too.

Merry Christmas… I hope Santa Claus brings you everything you asked for… HO HO HO…

No offense... But that was offensive...

Hoping for the best while knowing the worst might happen isn’t being “oblivious” it’s being positive and knowing that in a world you can’t change stewing in negativity only makes the time until the bad news comes…if it comes… miserable.

You accomplish nothing by attempting to show your insight but to make yourself look petty. I don’t think this is the proper time to bust out your, “I told ya so’s”…

But I don’t want to be offensive…

A little late at getting back.

I was not being oblivious, I was fully aware that as I said many, many times that BRoy’s injury would win, but I was hoping that PRP might keep the inflammation down, plus you can sustain movement with prolonging the final with pain killing drugs, We don’t know yet if that would have worked or if BRoy wisely decided not to go that route.

At the time of my Debate, BRoy was saying he could come back, I didn’t know how long he could play, but it is possible that he could be productive for a couple of years, and with the state of our finances, that would help. In the end his knees did make the decision, not as many replied, to save a buck. and that was all I wanted.

So as I have said many times so be it. I am feeling the lost of watching him play, I was painfully aware that he was getting close to the end of his career, I just didn’t know when.

In the end, it probably is better for the Blazers and BRoy, and that is what I was oblivious to.

by BBK on Dec 11, 2011 10:28 AM PST up reply actions

Roy shouldn't have any difficulty with concurrence

If he is indeed missing menisci in both knees (previously reported as missing “all” menisci – which probably means missing all the lateral menisci in each knee), then Roy risks Grade IV lesions in the articular cartilage.

Grade IV lesions create a literal bone on bone condition – which would be debilitating. The problem is that without menisci, Roy is not a candidate for microfracture surgery – the only known method for regrowing articular cartilage.

The notion that Roy would risk never walking again is a bit of an exaggeration – but without the ability to regrow cartilage via microfracture, Roy would be a candidate for transplant or knee replacement. Neither are conducive to NBA basketball.

We do not know whether Roy is currently suffering from Grade I lesions or worse – but the risk of any lesion is probably sufficient to warrant determination of a career-ending injury.

Roy’s condition is degenerative – meaning that it can never get better on its own. Playing will increase the rate of degeneration. Intervention will not heal the problem of articular cartilage rubbing on articular cartilage.

As such, we always knew that Roy had a limited window to continue playing. As it turns out – that window was one season within the context of risk management. Roy might be able to play, for a bit – and even be productive for that bit. Or, he may have learned that he has a lesion that would develop in to a more severe lesion in a short time.

What we have really learned is that once “all” of a meniscus is gone – a player’s days are probably limited to one or two seasons.

That is all true

As having two in plants the procedure is as you said. I lasted about ten years in normal life, but not without arthritis flare ups I talked to my knee specialise and he said the exact same thing you said. But I was asking him about PRP as his professional opinion and of curse he had to answer with his professional answer, that there are no scientific proof that PRP would work and a specialised he highly doubted that it would grow new menisci, but it might help with Arthritis. In Which IMO that is why BRoy is feeling better.

Retiring may postpone knee in-plants, or with PRP may eliminate it entirely

Great picture of Roy.

Reminder to us all that there are more important things in life than basketball. I want rings as bad as everyone, but not at the cost of my favorite players futures. That includes Pryz if he tries to come back when he shouldnt.

I woke up this morning hoping yesterday was just a nightmare

Sadly, it wasn’t. Brandon, in your too-brief stint on the basketball floor, you demonstrated a level of athleticism that dazzled our eyes. But more important, we could see, in your on-court and off-court activities, strength of character, courage, and leadership, that is beyond compare. You have demonstrated a level of dignity, in victory and defeat, that should be an inspiration to us all. I thought I was ready to hear that your playing days had ended, but yesterday’s news hit me like a ton of bricks. I cannot imagine how you must feel at the new reality. You are an uncommonly gifted young man, whose body has betrayed you. The injustice of it all is hard to comprehend. But I am confident that you will rise above your present predicament, and dazzle us once again. The possibilities are vast, Brandon, as you move on from your playing days. I know that you have good things in store. Be well, Brandon. Blazer fans will never forget you.

Seriously, the only two players I recall who connected so consistently with game-winners were Kobe Bryant & Michael Jordan

Granted, they called Jerry West “Mr. Clutch”, and I’m old enough to have seen him play. But either my memory has faded or he wasn’t as deadly down the stretch as Roy and the other two. And Roy’s being such a good guy made his heroics so much more enjoyable than any of them.

Many of us saw this coming--especially those of us with personal experience with damaged knees

Yet I have to admit that, after seeing what Roy did in that Spurs playoff game, I questioned my assumptions. That’s a testament to Roy’s greatness: he could make you believe that the laws of medical science didn’t apply to him.

We Blazer fans were practically ready to believe that Brandon Roy could walk on water. Now THAT’S a great ball player!

Too soon

I remember thinking a few years ago how hard it would be when Brandon was at a place when his game would start to deteriate because of age – I expected this when he would be in his mid 30’s…it just all happened too soon.

Brandon’s personality made it easy to root for him, and in turn in the team again. I’ll miss watching him play on the court – he is one of the best leaders this team has had – Walton was probably the most gifted basketball player to play for this organization, Clyde was the most gifted athlete, and Brandon one of the best leaders and clutch players to have played. Brandon led by example and helped bring about a culture that was enjoyable to watch and have your kids exposed to.

Thank you for good memories and being a healthy role model for others.

I always thought straight up guys like Roy should become refs and contribute to the game that way. I think he’d make a great ref and believe me, the nba needs new blood in the ref pool. Let Joey Crawford retire and give Brandon Roy a whistle!

I also want to show appreciation for Brandon and all he’s done for the Blazers. Other guys who would make good refs would be Nash, Hill, Stockton, Brandon should be a Hall of Famer even with his shortened career. I’m still excited about this team.Nate is a veteran at adjusting the roster. The question mark I’ve wondered about is that throughout this lockout and transition I’m hearing more about Luke Babbit than Gerald Wallace. Makes one wonder. Wallace is a game changer and it’s Batum’s time to shine.

Want to leave my two cents somewhere on here.

Roy was an amazing player, and it’s total garbage that he has to retire. I wish him and the Blazers nothing but the best [well, except when the Blazers play the Bulls, but that’s another matter entirely].
There’s stuff more important than the game. Really, most things are. But it sucks to see someone who was so good at basketball – and who is still pretty dang good at it – have to hang it up because of this.
