NBA players unavailable due to overseas contracts
In light of Patty's recent contract in China and in contemplating free agency, I was wondering if anyone knew of a good place to find a list of NBA players who will be unavailable this season due to signing overseas contracts with no opt-out clauses in place. I think that I heard all players who went to China would have to commit for a year, not being able to opt-out of the contracts they signed, so I assume that this list would also include the likes of Kenyon Martin, Aaron Brooks, Stephon Marbury and Wilson Chandler. Are there any others who will be missing this short season?
Thanks! Go Blazers!

J. R. Smith.
But that could get complicated.

Nuggets could be in trouble.
Three of their rotation players are in China now.

Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown.
Porter, Drexler, Kersey, Williams, Duckworth. The greatest starting 5 ever.

People are sleeping on Denver.
Kenyon Martin, Wilson Chandler, and J.R. Smith are all fungible assets. So long as the Nuggets re-sign Nene and Arron Affflalo, losing Martin, Chandler, and Smith in the inevitable roster churn is insignificant.
"I Am Mine"
Yeah, they didn't miss Melo much after the trade
Can you imagine a Nuggets-Blazers playoff series? Either Nate would advance or Andre Miller would. Something would have to give
Believe it or don’t: ‘Dre is currently the highest-paid player on Denver’s roster, and he’ll probably be backing up Lawson

Don't forget Faried
You know I’ll watching that young man’s NBA career with interest

I do like Kenneth Faried, for sure.
Faried could be a sane, Pistons-era Dennis Rodman, which’d make him a force to be reckoned with on the glass and defensively.
"I Am Mine"
I hope not.
Maybe a DeJuan Blair-light, without the offensive repertoire.

the kid just wants to rebound, similar to Larry Smith
I was not happy on draft day, I know you were ecstatic re: Smith
I don’t know if Faried is the post defender that Portland needs (rookies tend to get schooled) but I think he’ll eventually be a steal at #21 in the first round. If Portland signs Hayes then I’ll be satisfied, but if they add yet another light in the pants bean pole to the roster I’m going to be pissed

Yeah, Larry Smith is probably the most realistic comparison for Kenneth Faried.
Crazy how we must go back to the ’80s to find a reasonable comparison for Faried.
He’s that unique.
Anyhow, if it’d been up to me, Portland would’ve drafted both Faried and Nolan Smith. Unlike you, though, I find it doubtful that Smith would’ve dropped to the second round.
"I Am Mine"
early second round for Nolan
that was the buzz on draft day, that Portland reached for Smith. Sure, they really liked him, but a savvy GM (like Stu Inman, back in the day) would have drafted Johnny Davis AFTER he filled another roster need

I, however, will aruge that Nolan Smith fills an actual need. Were it up to me, ...
I’d’ve taken Kenneth Faried at #21, dealt Rudy Fernandez and Petteri Koponen to the Dallas Mavericks for the 26th pick in a separate deal, nabbed Nolan Smith at #26, and later waived Andre Miller before the June 30th deadline. And yeah, I’d’ve been comfortable with starting Smith on Day 1 and also having him backed up by a minimum-level free agent vet like Earl Watson.
"I Am Mine"
I love that you're so high on Smith
Makes me excited to see him play. I dont really follow college B-ball, so it’s fun when someone i consider knowledgeable about basketball is high on our top draft pick.
That said, i’ll never forget you poo-pooing durant all over sonics central back in the day. In your defense i think you predicted 20ish wins which is what we ended up having that year.
Smith was a need if the team didn't acquire Felton
Portland hasn’t had a rookie PG step in and perform well since the days of Fat Lever and Kelvin Ransey.
Let’s say Portland drafted Faried and wasn’t able to draft Smith, because some other team snuck ahead of them at 25, etc. As long as Felton’s healthy, the roster still had Armon Johnson and another veteran PG (Watson, etc) could have been acquired.
I liken Smith to Terry Porter, who was acquired late in the first round when the team already had Valentine starting and Colter backing him up. Darnell went down with an prolonged injury (as he did during Lever’s rookie year) and Porter wond up playing a lot more as a rookie than anyone expected him to, as a NAIA rookie. Then Terry worked on his 3 point shot with Petrie during the next few offseasons, which made him the perfect compliment to Drexler when the team was ready to win in ’89.
Smith’s NBA career could follow a similar track, but as I’ve written many times, it’s been 25+ years since Porter was drafted and Blazer fans have seen a lot of PGs drafted and never amount to much, in-between
So we’ll remain skeptical until Nolan starts to show it on the NBA hardwood. Playing (or, not playing much) for Nate is not in the rookie PG’s advantage. Remember, Bayless was a lottery choice but Nate played Rodriguez more behind Blake, because of Sergio’s “familiarity” with the offense

I liked Nolan a lot in college but I have a couple of concerns with how he'll fit here
To me he would be great next to a Roy/Iggy/Wade type passing SG. Unfortunately we have Wesley Matthews instead. Between those two I don’t know that there is enough distributing nous to successfully run an offense. We don’t have a point-forward on the roster either. Seeing as it seems like Wesley is staying put, I feel like we might need a purer point than Nolan in the future.
Either that or Elliot turns into our next generation passing SG. Stranger things have happened.

Thats a legitimate concern
regarding a back court of Smith/Matthews. Unless someone is relying on Batum to become a point forward.
Get it done... Paul.
well, you'd expect
Felton and Matthews to play the bulk of the minutes at the 1-2
When Nate puts Smith on the floor, it may well be alongside Roy, in which case “the problem” is solved. For now
OTOH, Armon Johnson will have something to say about those backup PG minutes, before all is said and done

Sorry to all my supporters, but from a financial standpoint, it’ll be foolish for me to break this contract to return to the NBA for a 66 game season. W/that said, I’m ECSTATIC that we’ve reached a deal!!!! My vote is already in! I’ll be back as an unrestricted FA next yr.
good for him.
PHILLY!
Here is a good list. Their salary infos are sometimes off (go to or own Storyteller or ShamSports for those).

Some names not signed in China with no out clause include Von Wafer, Sasha Vujacic, Brian Scalabrine, Hilton Armstrong, David Andersen, Acie Law. Nothing earth-shattering.
I don't know if I can handle an NBA without Scalabrine
