"Spoke w/connected source this week who said he believes Paul Allen will sell both the Trail Blazers and Seahawks in next 24-36 months. Not sure if I agree w the person who gave me word about Allen selling sports teams but its interesting. Heard more & more chatter recently." -- Brian Berger, 750 AM The Game
Last month, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported that Allen was taking a hard-line stance during ongoing labor negotiations because he was preparing to sell the Blazers.

I agree
Yes this is major! I know John Canzanno theorized this several days ago….and while he often likes to fan the flames of controversy, I have a feeling he wouldn’t have floated this out there on his radio show unless he caught wind of something from a source (if for no other reason than to later say he was “right” about his prediction.) :-)
I have heard John Canzano theorize lots with little to no information
Think you’re giving him a little too much credit, lol

Wow
I wonder what the reason for this is. I understand the Blazers a little bit more than the Seahawks. It’s hard to make money in a small market with an NBA team, but the NFL? Both franchises lose a great owner if it happen but I’m betting it doesn’t.
health?
loss of interest without any titles in 21 years of ownership and billions of dollars spent in trying to get one?
PHILLY!
Health would be my first guess.
that or someone told him he had to sell
You're right, man. Even as an absentee owner of the Seattle Seahawks, Paul Allen can turn a profit off it.
Not that it worries me, though, since I assume that a wealthy Washingtonian would step up to purchase the Seahawks if it came on the market. Maybe Steve Ballmer would finally get the chance to own a professional sports franchise.
"I Am Mine"
If Allen were headed out, we need the owners to really stick it to the players
The chances our next owner is an eccentric billionaire with no restraint aren’t great.

If true, nicht gut Blazer fans!
Allen kept us relevant despite our small market status in so many years, if he goes, so does the best possibility of us winning a title in the next 20 years.
PA has been a good owner IMO. I don't want to see him sell the team
but on the other hand he hasn’t been great either, he’s in part responsible for the Jailblazers and the weird organizational moves in the last few years.
I agree
And as long as the Blazers stay in Portland and the new owner(s) are committed to keeping them competitive then I’m fine with it. Luckily, we’re a small market team but have a rabid fan base so why would they risk moving the team somewhere it might not do as well?
Vegas isn't getting a pro sports team.
And Paul Allen’s departure would probably reduce the chances of the team going to Seattle.
Plus there’s an long term contract with the arena.
Given what the city has put up with in regards to the rose garden, I’d sure hope they have some sort of legal protection against that.

Yeah, the only way I see the Portland Trail Blazers relocating elsewhere is if Paul Allen sells it to a ...
guy like Larry Ellison, who’d be hell-bent on moving the franchise to San Jose, CA. Yet, it’s doubtful that the NBA Board of Governors would be fond of or even approve such a sale and subsequent move.
"I Am Mine"
I'm also not convinced the league would be excited about the Blazers leaving Portland
The complete loss of the Pacific Northwest, and killing a long-time basketball town with no other major sports. While I wouldn’t put anything past Stern, I don’t think they really want the Blazers to move.
Yeah, losing the entire Pacific Northwest region would be a blow.
That’s especially true considering the NBA doesn’t have to compete with the NHL in this region.
"I Am Mine"
Even as a Washingtonian, my hope is that the Trail Blazers stay in Portland.
Now, it’d be very intriguing to see the franchise under new ownership. Any potential ownership group would need a whole lot of money behind it, though, such as that of the ultra-rich Paulson family.
"I Am Mine"
Yawn
Are these the same sources that are constantly sure progress is being made in the lockout negotiation. A friend of a friend who’s friends with my cousin charlie’s brother who has a friend who wants to remain anonymous is sure there’s a chance it could rain in the next 6 months.
Update: more and more people are talking about since I started talking about it, stay tuned to see if more people talk about it.

Lets not worry about it until it actually happens.

Law of Logical Argument
Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.
Well that's disconcerting
A move is unlikely (I’m glad they signed a long term arena contract), but multiple murmurs have to make you wonder about a change of ownership.
I also think this could be a health thing. Not that he’s in particularly poor health; more that he’d like to make sure his teams are sold to interested and engaging buyers, instead of being inherited and sold to a bidder who may not have Paul’s love of the teams.
If Paul Allen looks to sell off all of his Vulcan Sports and Entertainment assets, I'll assume there are ...
health-related reasons behind it. Yet, if Allen looks to sell just the Portland Trail Blazers and not the Seattle Seahawks or the Seattle Sounders FC, I’ll assume it’s due to his disenchantment with the NBA.
"I Am Mine"
Well, it would certainly be health related, in that he's had a number of health issues influencing his decision
I’m not convinced it’s necessarily urgent-health related, as in he’s in poorer health than we’re aware. If you have a few health scares, you tend to want to have your house in order, which might include selling his sports teams. It also may be a way of reducing the stressors in his life.
He might just be tired of pouring his money into teams that haven't succeeded in winning it all
Hes got Antarctica, space, brains, music, yachts, submarines, space planes, private armies, and countless women to keep him busy, why bother with some middle of the road sports teams?

He definitely knows what is the average survival time after such successful chemotherapy.
Do not forget that this is his second battle with cancer, and he has other health problems too.Likely he has some long-term plans that depend on his health status.
But exactly that would motivate him to make one last attempt to see the Blazers at the top.
Ralph Wilson is 91 years old
No age restrictions on an owner(Though to be fair Wilson owned the Bills forever).. though Knight has said he didn’t have interested in the past, if it came to Portland losing the team I bet he would step up.
Get it done... Paul.
It's far more likely we would face the Sonics dilemma
Selling the team to someone from out of state who swears they aren’t going to move the team, and than does than we will sell the team to someone who is overtly stating they are buying the team to relocate it.
Even then, I think the team is obligated to stay another nine years at least under the agreement made when the RG was built. We still have a modern arena with major transportational infrastructure feeding it. Much different than Key Arena.

public ownership
PA should set up a hefty trust and donate the team to city, like a Packers model. He will be fondly remembered in the city of Portland forever, and the organization could reach some level of stability.

I'm surprised everyone is convinced this means the Blazers are gone from Portland.
I’m much more worried this will mean the Blazers will become a Milwaukee or Charlotte in terms of finances.
It’s very possible the owner wouldn’t be local, but that doesn’t automatically necessitate an attempted move.
True, there are plenty out-of-towners who purchase pro sports teams and don't relocate.
It’s not like the Pittsburgh Mavericks won the NBA Finals last season.
"I Am Mine"
I think the events surrounding the Sonics will tarnish any NBA team sale for the foreseeable future.
Fans will often assume the worst, which is easier once you’ve seen the worst happen.
I think you're putting too much stock in one incident.
Franchises have relocated before the SuperSonics and franchises will relocate after it.
That’s life.

hmmmmm......
What happens if Paul was to pass away? Who would control the team?
He was pretty sick recently. Cancer, I believe. It can be a tough thing to beat even if you are a billionaire. Health could certainly be a reason.
Maybe he wants to sell because small market bball can be a money pit. If he was a hard liner for a better deal, his cards are on the table, he wants this thing to start making money. If it doesnt he might want to recover some of his losses by selling. He is a billionaire, his money is obviously important.
Maybe, age. Hes getting older, and he knows he cant live forever.
Maybe family or his wife want him to get out of it.
Maybe he has inside info on 2012 and he wants to sell before he goes to his bunker under the polar ice caps.
I guess until he sells the team we will just never know.

Paul's not married.
I thin it’s believed that the team will be under the control of his sister (via Vulcan) if he passes, and it doesn’t sound like she’s too interested in the Blazers. I think the most popular assumption is that the team would still be run via Vulcan until a buyer is found, but as far as I know, it’s all speculation.
thats scary
lets hope he sticks around for awhile. Cheers to PA!

Improved finances for small market teams....
This is concerning because I like PA as owner of the Blazers; however, if a new CBA is much friendlier to small market teams, besides making it more appealing to sell the team, wouldn’t it also make it more appealing to KEEP the team? After all, if a new CBA provides a new economic model and the Blazers can compete with larger markets, maybe an owner would be more likely to hold on to the team too.
But as another fan commented, if it is health related, I could see him selling both. New ownership would certainly be interesting, but IMO the Blazers are likely to be worse off.
Seems like Allen is only interested in owning this team when we are good. He was giving up just before we got Roy and Aldridge. It makes sense that he wants out now. I wish the city could take over like how the packers are owned by shareholders.
I’d really like to have another billionaire owner for this team that isn’t a moron in business.
What about his part ownership stake in the S**ttle Flounders?
Seahawks and them share the same resources [FO, stadium, etc.] and if the NFL team goes surely the other would need some serious reorg.
Jag kom, jag såg, erövrade jag.
Ugh....
Geesh, can I selfishly ask why this rumor had to gain legs just now? I’ve been waiting for the return of the N.B.A. and hoping to just enjoy The Blazers and whatever season manifests. If Paul Allen isn’t motivated and involved and is simply looking to sell? Then it’s just going to be another angst filled question mark hanging over the franchise.
But now that I’ve got the selfish, how this affects me part out of the way? I guess there really is only 2 ways to look at this.
A: It’s a rumor and simply not true.
Or
B: Paul Allen simply wasn’t going to be Blazer owner forever, whatever the underlying reasons or motivations. So you simply hope that for whatever reason he has decided to remove himself from the ownership of The Blazers, that the next incarnation of Ownership is decent.
I sincerely hope the outcome is scenario A. Because I think finding decent ownership with commitment and resources to allow success in Portland would be challenging.
