Jan 08, 2011 : where's today's junk drawer??

I guess this must be it?   Less than 9 hrs left today, but I have an OT rant, so I guess I need to start one regardless.

I don't want to make light of a tragedy, but I just read the story of the shooting in AZ on the KOIN website.  As there are quotes from locals and no credit given to AP or other wIre service I will assume the story was written locally.  What annoys me is that the city where the shooting occurred was written as Tucscon, Tucson, and Tuscon - all in the same story.   Now I can understand covering your bases when you don't know how to spell it  - but what happened to looking it up???     The Foxfire spell checker even red-lined the first spelling for me (giving the other 2 as options)  - so the writer didn't even use a spell check?    C'mon people, this was a headline story, not a tweet or text where spelling is generally optional.   This kind of sloppiness totally negates any sort of credibility KOIN internet news might have had for me (and let me be the first to call me a dinosaur.)

website versions of stories are often typo ridden. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and call those typos?

Recently Olive used “queue” when they wanted “cue.” I wrote in the comments about it and 12 hours later it will wasn’t fixed. I didn’t check after that.

I don’t know why they don’t use copyeditors on those stories, too.

As much as I want to blame the likes of Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck for stoking the fires regarding ...

this violent spree killing, I doubt the shooter, Jared Lee Loughner, was persuaded by their inflammatory rhetoric. If anything, he seems more in line with media personailties like Alex Jones. From what I could gather from a few articles, it’s difficult to put a label on his overall political and philosophical perspective.

I already linked it once in the other thread earlier (not going to do it again) but there are plently of other wack jobs out there rooting on this kind of crap.

Yeah, the "crazy" part is certainly there. Not sure if I'd go with narcissim, though, for I'd say ...

antisocial personality disorder might be the more apt description for this dude. And yeah, Jared Lee Loughner is definitely past the paleolibertarian Ron Paul and the civil libertarian stylings of Jesse Ventura — the latter of whom I like and want to see be the LP’s presidential nominee in 2012 — rather, this guy’s philosophy on life and politics reaches to the far end of what someone may hear presented by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on his radio show.

Good entertainment and a very sweet French film with Gerard Depardieu as a simple man discovering the power of books late in life from an old grandmother he meets in a park. Also has some great scenes with him reading to and discussing with his cat. Not sure it already has an English title or will even get released in the US. Nothing spectacular, but was fun.

Hmm, I'd say the hiring of Pete Carroll would be more comparable to Paul Allen hiring John Calipari or ...

Rick Pitino next summer. Portland, however, doesn’t have the pieces to mesh too well with either Calipari’s dribble-drive motion offense — which’d work best with the Heat’s core — nor Pitino’s up-tempo 4-outside/1-inside motion offense, which is being run in the NBA right now by Jim O’Brien in Indiana.

I guess it's a matter of taste.

I talked to people about it when I was home for break, and most agreed that the OSU unis were incredible and the UO unis were confusing. I can kind of understand black uniforms for any school, but silver is outside of green, yellow, white, and black. It’s a little weird to see the Ducks with a completely different neon color replacing green and yellow.

I have a hard time with watercolors.

I can’t get it the right consistency. I want it flat with little texture, but it always turns out blotchy.

by Nick Van Excellent on Jan 9, 2011 2:33 AM PST up reply actions

I've done some good watercolor paintings in school. I suppose many people use too hard or big brushes, and too little water

But with few water and mixing opaque white into it you can even get effects similar to acrylic paintings. It’s pretty flexible and often the first “real” painting tool kids learn (after wax and pencil maybe).

But the messiness is part of the messy water colour look… unless you’re REAL good.

I want it to look like a Henry Darger style paintings, but I can never get it that clean looking. I like the messy watercolors too, I just wish I could do both, but I can’t really do either.

I dunno exactly how he does those

But it looks like ink and water color, which is what I was thinking of trying next. A Tumblr I subscribe to called something like “Gabby Draws” does these cute ink and water colors, where the water color is mainly just splashes of water and she really lets the paint soak in making that unique water color look.

I think I can do the ink and water color combo decent, but I ain’t tried yet.

It’s funny, because I’ve been asking different people to check out the Doodles and tell me which ones they like, and it’s like a psychological profile test. People seem to fall into distinct categories of which ones they like. Some are way on one end, some on the other, but most like the characters who reappear over time.

It’s been really interesting to see what people connect to.

I like all of them. They are very funny and unique, because they aren’t like most entertainment; most stories either end with the situation being extremely bad or awesomely good. Yours seem content to find the positives in bad situations. They kinda smell the roses along the way of of life. I like the ones that end badly, but the character is still satisfied. I think the ones that take a deep look into relationship apathy or woes are cute as hell.

Also the tone of voice is interesting. That is prolly like 60% of why I like them. It is sorta…I dunno…like from the glory days of radio, like the lone ranger or the shadow.

by Name's Ash on Jan 10, 2011 9:40 AM PST up reply actions

Thanks Ash, I really appreciate that... a lot

You really read them!!

Yeah, the tone is a tricky thing and one I can’t verbalize very well, but I know what feels right and what doesn’t. If I’m trying anything with the tone of voice, it’s to keep it sorta casual.

Funny you mention classic radio… I LOOOOOVE listening to classic radio. I didn’t even think of them being an influence (aside from the type of stories I do), so that’s really interesting to me.

She still likes to add a seasoning mix along with the fresh veggies and peppers

This is her current favorite. She especially likes it because the salt is separated and you can vary the amount needed. It’s so easy to get chili over-salted.

by fajunga on Jan 9, 2011 2:33 PM PST up reply actions

Thanks to seasonal chiles here in CA, the spiciness varies

She doesn’t make a crazy mouth-burning hot chili, but that’s by choice. If I asked, I’m sure she could do it with ease. She likes a nice spicy taste, without feeling like you ate fire afterward. I’ve found she can reach a nice middle ground. But for someone who likes a really hot chili, they’d probably find it tame.

by Timmay! on Jan 9, 2011 2:35 PM PST up reply actions

If you need a crockpot recommendation, let me know.

Absolutely none of them are outstanding (they’re not as good as they used to be at keeping a constant temperature), but there are still some good ones.

That kind of chilli sounds the best. In the case of the crockpot, any recommendation for someone on a limited budget would be much appreciated, but based on what you just told me about older ones being better, I might just try and snag my parents old crockpot next time I swing by their place. I remember it making delicious food.

heeeyyyyyyy so dnrkhgu gotta go pl hdei and skeieek

by fajunga on Jan 9, 2011 2:46 PM PST up reply actions

I asked my wife

She said it depends on how old the crockpot is, and how much use it gets. If it’s an older one and they’ve used it for years, odds are it’s probably a good one to grab.

We’re using the Crock-Pot model, but Hamilton Beach’s models are also listed as good at Amazon. Amazon has tons of models with lots of reviews. Many of them are under $40 or so.

Our newer model, we brought it home, plugged it in and it started smoking a few minutes later. Good thing we stayed home, huh? We replaced it with another of the same model, and it’s been rock-solid since. Just bad luck. I definitely recommend buying from a place that makes returns easy, if you buy one.

She might be my exhibit A for a high motor athlete. Never stops, weighs just about 100 pounds and can’t have much muscles but powers like a sewing machine. Totally collapsed into the finish (last stage is running up a 9 km skiing slope with up to 28% incline) but was so so happy.

First place goes to Polish athlete Justina Kowalzcyk who is a beast. Almost like LeBron vs Mills ;)

Nnamdi Asomugha's contract was voided due to an automatic clause in his contract.

This means that one of the best defensive players in the league is available in his prime. It’ll be very interesting to see where he goes, and what owner decides to break the bank for him. I wonder if Paul Allen would make that a priority.

The weird thing would be if he went to the Jets and played with Revis, as he’s talked about wanting to do. Both Revis and Asomugha are so dominant that they both get targeted about twice a game, and that’s with them guarding the other team’s top receiver. They could stick men in the box to stop the run and shut down the pass. It’d be unreal.

by Cablinasian on Jan 9, 2011 10:54 AM PST reply actions

It's very odd.

There were incentives that were difficult to reach. He had to play more snaps than the year prior, as well as improve in other defensive stats. The problem is that he’s never thrown at, so he doesn’t accumulate stats, and he played a full 16 last year.

Just baffling. Oakland had an 8-8 season, but fired its coach, will lose its best player, and has no first round pick.

by Cablinasian on Jan 9, 2011 11:22 AM PST up reply actions

Nnamdi owes his agent a nice gift on top of the commission

unless the new CBA takes player salaries back to the level they were in the 80s, he’s going to make an absolute killing. Plus, he gets carte blanche to pick his team, so if he want to chase a Super Bowl ring that’s now an option. What were the Raiders thinking with those incentives?

Kevin Durant won me over when he went Rocky IV on Russia this summer.

by blazeraddict on Jan 9, 2011 11:48 AM PST up reply actions

It's simple. They don't think.

I believe that is pretty apparent if u look at last decade or so of what passes for Raiders management. First they fire a coach that got them to .500 in forever, and now this.

The cake was a lie.

college hoops is not a clean sandbox by any means, but he ran a very loose ship at Missouri in terms of rule compliance/character of recruits. Not saying he’s a bad coach, but viscerally I don’t have a good feel for him

Rumor is that the Denver/Detroit/NJ trade is back in progress.
The primary elements of the scenario currently on the table, sources said, call for New Jersey to acquire Anthony, Billups and Hamilton; Denver to land Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, Anthony Morrow and at least two first-round picks; and Detroit to acquire Troy Murphy and Johan Petro.

ESPN. Billups recently said he wants to be bought out if he goes to Jersey.

by Timmay! on Jan 9, 2011 2:24 PM PST reply actions

Denver makes out pretty well with that package

Favors has a decent chance of being a very good player for the next decade plus, Harris is an above average PG (plus they could always flip him or Lawson after this deal, if it occurs), Morrow is JR Smith’s shooting range with more accuracy/less athleticism/less insanity, and at worst, those will be mid first round picks if NJ jells, at best lottery, so that’s more players/assets for them. Denver gets better long term, imo (obviously you’d rather have Melo, but that ship has sailed)

Kevin Durant won me over when he went Rocky IV on Russia this summer.

by blazeraddict on Jan 9, 2011 2:31 PM PST up reply actions

To some extent, it does feel like NJ is overpaying for Carmelo.

Carmelo is a very good player, but I’m not sure he’s “gut your entire team except for Lopez” good.

Then again, Carmelo and Lopez are a great 1-2 punch.

by Timmay! on Jan 9, 2011 2:33 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not sure how they'd rebuild the team around them.

They look like a playoff contender but not a title contender.

by Timmay! on Jan 9, 2011 2:37 PM PST up reply actions

That's where my thoughts are too.

That they’re good enough to bring in fans and make a playoff round or two, but not good enough to be in any championship conversations.

But it’s better than being in the basement the next 5 years, if they felt that was their future with the current staff.

by Timmay! on Jan 9, 2011 2:40 PM PST up reply actions

is it better than being in the basement?

At least as one of the worst teams in the league, you have the hope of the lottery.

by Cablinasian on Jan 9, 2011 2:40 PM PST up reply actions

Man, from a business perspective, that's a tough question

The hope of a draft pick doesn’t bring in ticket and jersey sales over those 5 years. They may prefer the nearly-guaranteed money over the hope of a huge draft pick.

by Timmay! on Jan 9, 2011 2:42 PM PST up reply actions

I agree

but I would think that the Russian billionaire be one of those more willing to suffer current losses for future gain.

But, he also seems the type to think Melo’s really good, and he’s making a decision that will help the team and make money.

by Cablinasian on Jan 9, 2011 2:50 PM PST up reply actions

I agree on the owner.

I wonder if he’s willing to take these chances because he knows he’ll do whatever is necessary to build from there.

But, the new CBA may make that a serious challenge.

by Timmay! on Jan 9, 2011 2:55 PM PST up reply actions

The Nets, Wizards, and Clippers

are all teams where the whole is less than the sum of the parts. Something to be said for organizational culture perhaps

Kevin Durant won me over when he went Rocky IV on Russia this summer.

by blazeraddict on Jan 9, 2011 2:42 PM PST up reply actions

You do indeed have to wonder about organizational culture at some point

The Clippers are a classic example: They were the definition of a team on the rise in the early 2000’s. Then, boom. And the team was already falling apart before the Livingston injury.

Speaking of which, Livingston seemed to disappear after signing the Bobcats contract this Summer. Anyone seen him play?

by Timmay! on Jan 9, 2011 2:45 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, NJ has terrible ticket sales

Remember those reverse jerseys and tax preparation and job fair attempts to bring in people. I’m sure the new Russian ownership wants a more high-profile team too.

by Norsktroll on Jan 9, 2011 2:46 PM PST up reply actions

I had forgotten about tax prep night

although I do wonder if in the age of Turbo Tax and other Tax Prep software how many people have a hard time doing their taxes these days.

by tingeyga on Jan 9, 2011 3:00 PM PST up reply actions

I'm always worried about bugs in tax prep software

I know they guarantee against bugs, but that still doesn’t cover the time and hassle of dealing with repercussions.

Then again, if the alternative is getting my taxes done at an NBA game, it becomes a close race.

by Timmay! on Jan 9, 2011 3:03 PM PST up reply actions

It all depends on whether he agrees to an extension

Unless he agrees to sign before the fact, I think NJ is taking a massive risk with this deal. The pieces they have aren’t all that bad – I still think Lopez’s rookie year is indicative of what type of pro he can be rather than this year, and Favors will be good to very good at his peak. I’m not sure what NJ’s cap situation is if this goes down, although after the summer of LeBron came up craps for the Nets, I am equally unsure about the influence Jay Z has on free agents.

Kevin Durant won me over when he went Rocky IV on Russia this summer.

by blazeraddict on Jan 9, 2011 2:38 PM PST up reply actions

I thought Detroit shut this rumor down immediately?

Makes no sense for them whatsoever, unless they are the ones getting 2 first rounders.

The cake was a lie.

by xedubx on Jan 9, 2011 3:07 PM PST up reply actions

New Jersey has future first-rounders from Golden State, Houston, and Los Angeles, so perhaps ...

one of those goes to Detroit — which’d most likely be the Lakers one — and two of those go to Denver.

by Timmay! on Jan 9, 2011 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

Seattle already won once in Chicago.

Of course, this will be a completely different environment, but I’d give them a decent chance at winning. Much higher than their chances against Atlanta.

by anupam on Jan 9, 2011 3:06 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, and how does home field work in the playoffs?

What’s the formula to determining where games are played?

by anupam on Jan 9, 2011 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

Division champs get home field over non-division champs

after that it is all based on record is my understanding

by tingeyga on Jan 9, 2011 3:15 PM PST up reply actions

in the next round, the lowest available seed will play the highest available seed.

It’s not like March Madness or the NBA playoffs with a stiff bracket.

So, if GB (6 seed) wins twice, they’ll go on the road, regardless of who the opponent is, because they’re the lowest seed. Seattle can only have a home NFC championship if they face Green Bay, since they’ve already eliminated the fifth seed.

by Cablinasian on Jan 9, 2011 3:17 PM PST up reply actions

Cab and I are talking about this on chat, and it seems like a good thing to post here

Berger did a writeup on the CBA negotiations that are an absolute must-read.

A few snippets:

…he has come to believe that owners and players will reach an agreement and avoid a work stoppage at the 11th hour before the current CBA expires on July 1, 2011. However, if cooler heads do not prevail, the owners will be so entrenched and determined to make a work stoppage pay off that they will push to cancel the entire season… Reducing roster size from 15 to 12 and splitting revenues 50-50… expand the draft to four or five rounds. Each team would select two players for its NBA roster and two or three for its NBA Development League affiliate…

Lots more.

Take a look at the gallery from the new Motorola phone. It’s shown being used on a full monitor with keyboard and mouse, not just a netbook monitor. And a remote control, so you can plug it into your TV, but sit down and control a movie from the couch.

sounds like fun!

I’m pretty intense with my important sports moment viewing. I need to watch at my house, along with a few different adult beverages with only my husband (if he is here and not on the road). I made the mistake several years ago going to a Super Bowl Party where most of the people were more interested in getting to the chips and guacamole dip and walking in front of the screen. From that day forward….I view alone, watch every frame of the game and scream and yell to my heart’s content! Oh, and get plowed accordingly

So very sad about the JD on such a big day. Wee Wee Wee
