Blazer Chatter Thread: Most Inspirational Player

This is your chat thread for all things Blazers-related not covered elsewhere on the site.  Though any on-topic subject goes, we always start with a seed for conversation.  Today's topic:  Since we just passed the halfway point of the season, let us know who you think the team's most inspirational player has been and why.

For me, it's really hard to narrow it down to one guy.

I feel like with all the injuries, the team could have folded and given up. But lately (minus the Kings game on Monday), everybody contributes and plays their hardest. Even if shots don’t go down, the team still does the little things on defense to keep themselves in the game. From Wes and Rudy stealing the ball, to Dante and LMA blocking shots/rebounding. To me, the whole team has been inspirational by just playing their hearts out in the face of adversity. Good examples would be the Heat and recent Clippers games.

If I've learned anything from the Macross7 anime series it's this:

There is no problem in the universe so large that it cannot be solved with electric guitars.

+1 for you.

Patty Cake

Seriously though pmills went from the novelty player who didn’t even make the team unless pendy didn’t blow the knee to the quick beast that he is today. Seeing a player who is under 6 feet and who nobody in the leauge thought would be playing deep into the 4th quarter let alone the 1st is very inspirational. He is a perfect example of the never give up blazer attitude of the past few years, yes the stars get injured, yes the team has new players every month, yes the wins come from working as hard as possible, and to top it off players like patrick mills work their way from towel boy cheerleader to “omg did you see that!”
I remember him saying at the beginning of the season “I’m just glad to be here, I feel like I get better everyday just being in practice with these blokes” now he is giving post game interviews where he deflects the praise rightly his to the rest of the team…. tell me that isn’t inspirational

I will second the Patty nomination

Because it was a two-fer, as we got a motivated Rudy out of the deal as well. Seriously, I give Patty 85% of the credit for Rudy being a semi-reliable and productive bench guy, and we need that bad.

good choice,

plus he is a encourager to “little guys” everywhere… and there are a lot more of them.
I like the way he always kept his eye on his goal, not being distracted by naysayers.

If Oden does not give up on the Blazers, we should not give up on him.

Wesley Matthews

Seems to get along with everyone, works real hard, does whatever he’s asked to do and appears to be an all around great guy.

by XBlazerfan on Jan 27, 2011 12:49 AM PST reply actions

wouldn't say most inspirational is the right word, but

Mills is easily the most enthusiastic/supportive. That guys comes BOUNDING off the bench at a dead run toward the guys on the floor at every timeout or even substitution. he is clearly the most vocals and demonstrative Blazers on the sideline, and i think that definitely does its part to inspire the team

"I want to be traded to a contender" is almost always code-speak for "I'm a loser."

Rudy

He didnt want to play this year, he is getting paid like crap (crap from NBA pay standards), yet he has shown up and hasnt been a problem since the season started. All the offseason turmoil is gone and he wasnt bitter about everything that was said about him. He is just playing.

I love three 3 things in life: Family, Money, and Baseball. Come March the order of those three get changed up a bit.

Patty

after everyone got injured, and started playing with no cohesion what so ever, Patty came and gave energy and got everyone excited and playing as team (for the most part, lol)

Hard to believe no one has said my pick yet.

Joel. No question for me. The Thrilla hasn’t been much more than a shadow of his former self most of the time, but he’s playing through the tough stuff and giving the Blazers all he has and is contributing to the efforts of keeping this ship going. Joel’s been through a lot in the last year, and it is inspirational to me to see how hard he’s worked so that he can contribute. Thanks Joel!

by idoltime on Jan 27, 2011 5:21 AM PST reply actions

This is my pick from a fans standpoint. Just having him back on the floor is a HUGE lift emotionally for all of us.

But from the team standpoint, I’d have to give it to Patty Mills. He was always the first off the bench with the high fives and chest bumps and 3 goggles, and I believe single handedly saved Rudy from himself. He’s a positive, happy, friendly guy and he even contributes QUALITY minutes on the floor. Love me some Pat Stacks!

LMA

When Roy was playing, he was a loyal no. 2 pick-and-popper, though many criticized him for it. Now he’s leading the team with his inside game. He’s been the good soldier since entering the league, and with him in the spotlight, this is a good time to appreciate it.

There have been a number of inspirational players this season

But I don’t know how you can give props to any one before Aldridge. He has given us playoff hopes once again when the season looked lost.

The entire team has impressed this year with their heart and hustle. Miller stands out as the most professional. His commitment to the game and to his family inspire me to be both a better math teacher and a better husband.

I give them credit for all the tough fought games...

…playing way too many minutes trying to fill holes in the roster with pure hustle. Even if we end up in the lottery this year we can say we were a solid playoff team for at least half a season.

Greg Oden

With all the bashing and all the pain and huge effort to recover from each of his knee injuries, Greg has hung in there and continued to insist that he will fulfill his promising potential. Greg has every reason to hang it up. He is paid over $20M so he likely does not need the money. He has been labeled a bust by nearly the entire media. He has been scorned for not being Kevin Durant.

Yes, Greg inspires me more than any other player. Perhaps it is being disabled myself that gives me the perspective on his attitude and courage. Perhaps it is my experience. But I am not wavering from this call.

without question: Lamarcus

He has put this entire franchise on his back. After all the criticism facing him, he has taken charge. In the face of family health issues, he has stepped up. He has gone from oft-overlooked second banana to franchise player and an all-star candidate. On top of that, he has remained humble.

i like it here, there, everywhere.

LMA, and it's not even close.

He leads the team in minutes, and has responded to adverse conditions by assuming a vocal leadership role and CLUTCH play. What’s more inspiring than heroic play?

Matthews is second.

wha??

by Hipster Olympic Team! on Jan 27, 2011 9:41 AM PST reply actions

I wish my choice...

I wish my choice would be more popular but it I’m afraid it won’t be.

One thing about facing as much diverse adversity as this team has faced is that the scenario’s and opportunity for inspirational response increase. Lot’s of argueable choices. I agree with almost everyone’s choice…from their P.O.V.. This has been a Most Inspirational Team….but that isn’t an option….

I’m going with Brandon Roy. Even though I think the wheel is still in spin and the story is not completed. I’m going with Brandon Roy because since he became a Blazer he demonstrated great talent and a keen, keen competitive nature. Pre-Season he was slated to be our All-Star…our face of the franchise and team leader. His knee’s reached a tipping point, they in many ways betrayed him.

Many Blazer players have faced challenge and adversity. But nobody has fallen from a higher public and professional perch. Even Oden, who has faced incredible challenge and adversity, is only measured against the hype and hope of what he might of been or might still be…

Brandon has gone from being the guy Kobe Bryant said was the most difficult cover for himself….to the guy Ron Artest is saying “something isn’t right”.

I’m guessing my choice isn’t going to be too popular because a lot of fans have turned on Brandon. But even that is part of it….

In Brandons recent interview, it sounds like he is coming to terms with his personal reality. He sounds optimistic and as confident as I think someone dealing with the unknown can be.

As high a plateau as Brandon has fallen from, I think to not sound bitter, not reflect some negativity…is a very laudable state to be in.

Cynics will tell me he is making 85 million dollars. But I believe part of the reason Brandon was given that contract was that he sincerely was a player that loved to compete, that wanted to be a leader, that wanted success. For a person or player that cares? That makes his new reality that much more challenging.

Perhaps technically I’m being premature. We have yet to see Brandon return, the story is not finished. But given the reversal of fortune dealt Brandon Roy, his apparent positive attitude I think is very inspirational. So premature or not, I’m going with Brandon.

Normally I would agree with this

…but even I, admitted huge Roy fan, can’t put him above some of the other guys on the team.

LMA

LaMarcus took a good hard look at his shortcomings and addressed them. Never in a million years did I think he’d assume a leadership role — I thought he’d always be content to sit back and let someone else take the reins. Joel and Patty have my admiration too, but they’re not exceeding expectations in the way that LaMarcus is.

well said

I totally agree with it LA. And though he’s not a player my appreciation for Nate has gone way up this year.

by hoodieNation on Jan 27, 2011 11:12 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

I'd have to say Wes $.

Even if he’s having a crappy game, he’s still giving 100%. He also doesn’t make any excuses. If he has a great game he just chalks it up as that’s what he’s supposed to do. If he has a bad game he’ll give credit to the other team, and admit that he sucked. He doesn’t blame his team mates.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

PATTY was happy just being there, waving a towel on the bench...

He was game enough to play along with trailblazers.tv in its quest for programming and it looked like he had no chance whatsoever of cracking the playing rotation in a contract year.

Thrown into the fray, he has performed admirably.

Patty

I’ve gotta go with Pat Stacks. His energy on/off the court has been inspiring. His support of his fellow teammates has been great. I think he has brought on so much comraderie among the team. Where would Rudy be without Patty this year? My guess? Back in Spain. Rudy is playing as free and happy as he did his rookie season when Sergio was here. Between the 2 of them they have provided a great spark in our 2nd unit. Patty has brought all the “internationals” together as well. You could see the comraderie really well at the Big Al’s event last night, the guys just get it.

For on court contributions alone: LaMarcus Aldridge. To see him step up like he’s done this year has been huge. We all knew he had it in him, but to see it come to fruition has been inspiring as a fan. And I think he’s inspiring his teammates as well.

by krizzikinz on Jan 27, 2011 11:11 AM PST reply actions

I don't think I can choose one player.

This year it’s been the whole team. At different times throughout the year someone different has stepped up.

This whole team is doing some pretty unimaginable things. But since we’ve seen it happen the last few years, I think we tend to forget how amazing it really is. To see so many of our top players go down and this team is only a few games off of where we were last year is astounding.

And you can’t forget the coaches too.

I gotta be honest, I’m not really inspired by anyone on this team. However, I’m easily most impressed by LA and the major strides he’s made this year.

long live the jd.

by jksnake99 on Jan 27, 2011 12:41 PM PST reply actions

It used to be

that the most inspirational player was decided by the team’s players. It was who was most inspirational to them. We honestly don’t know the answer to that.

Nowadays fans look on it as most inspirational to the fans. I think both have value, but it should be defined as to which one we’re talking about. (Not that we can say who inspires Dre or Patty or Joel…)

I’ve rec’d a few comments above so I won’t repeat them, but I’m voting for the team. Each individual and collectively. “Team” also includes Nate … and Billy B. and the other coaches (since I don’t know how each has contributed). They make me proud to be a Blazer fan.

by jorga on Jan 27, 2011 4:44 PM PST reply actions

I think all the players have their individual stories

of how they came to work hard and get into the NBA, which all could be dubbed as “inspiring”. And it can be interpreted in different ways, as I agree with LaMarcus carrying the team, Patty the key in inspiring Rudy, and Wesley going from undrafted to starting are all significant stories. But I feel like personally, that it’s the collective team being hard workers and considerably grounded people off the court that is inspirational.
