Pelton: Chris Johnson Is A Skinny, One-Dimensional Shot Blocker Who Probably Won't Stick

116

The Portland Trail Blazers have officially announced the signing of Chris Johnson to a 10-day contract this morning. Johnson will wear No. 17. Kevin Pelton translates some D-League statistics over at Basketball Prospectus and finds that Johnson, a 25-year old big man for the Dakota Wizards, is the league's No. 1 shot blocking specialist. However, he writes that Johnson's stats lump him in with a group of "skinny, one-dimensional shot blockers" and that could be a problem. "Except in rare cases, just blocking shots isn't enough to stick in the NBA," Pelton writes. "You've got to be able to do something else well, whether it's finish or rebound or whatever. None of these guys meet that test." "Paywall" strikes again -- you need a BP subscription to see the rest of the post. Here's the part that applies to Johnson...
