Countdown to Junk - January 24th,25th, 26th, and.. 27th? 2011
So isn't it crazy when you find yourself counting down to something?
The daily Junk Drawer (JD) or Off-Topic Forum (OTF) fanpost is the place for true off-topic conversation and people's random thoughts.. if you have a one-off thought, consider posting it here.
The rules about importance and significance of the topic are suspended in each JD but keep some of these basic rules in mind:
- Imagine fewer images, and the JD will move as one.
- Don't be too on-topic ever.
- Personal attacks and swearing will NEVER be tolerated.
- Don't use the JD to call out or talk about users from other BEdge threads.
I have been counting down on a lot of things lately. Even though I know that "a watched pot never boils", I have never been good at living this practice enough to allow myself to stop watching my countdowns:
- I am in the middle of a detox cleanse and diet that will go for another 10 days in this current phase. I have removed gluten, red meats, dairy, eggs, soy, peanuts, corn, nightshades, and sugar from my diet (as well as eliminated my use of all intoxicants).
- I'm taking a vacation to North Carolina in 17 days. I hope to be spending time with someone very special while I am out there but am extremely nervous as to how it will all go down.
- The one year anniversary of my wife's passing will come in 10 weeks and 2 days. I have no idea what I am going to do on that day yet, but I am very aware of it coming.
- I have about six and a half months left on my old school LG cell phone before I can upgrade to my first smart phone. I'm curious to see what the experience will be like.
- I have 1,064,966 minutes to wait for the one I think is worth waiting for.
Anything you are counting down to? Anything worth counting the minutes to in your life?
With love for all, DJ idol.xoxo

Most vegetables/fruits that aren't nightshades.
Whole grain rice and quinoa (no oats as well as no wheat). Seeds and nuts (but not peanuts). I can eat non-farm raised fish in small amounts, duck and turkey, but I can’t eat any of those things after Wednesday for one week as I have to remove all meat from my diet for the final week. Actually, Wednesday and Thursday I am completely fasting and then I’ll be doing the no meat elimination diet for the last five days. Then I spend a week or so slowly reintroducing gluten, dairy, eggs, and soy back into my diet and measuring the effects to see if I have any reaction to them.
interesting. I have 10 pounds of quinoa at home right now. I just remembered this about two weeks ago and have been eating it with my chili. I like it.
I really have come to enjoy quinoa a lot too.
I should try it with chili. Although I think I’ll need to have at least the possibility of tomatoes in my diet again before I can imagine chili being good whether it’s veggie or not.
Best wishes for this important time
After a relatively long life filled with memorial events and trials I have learned:
The past is like a pile of boulders. When I learned to stop dragging around those useless rocks my journey became infinitely lighter.
The future is like a house which I have never entered and has no floor plan and offers no advance control over the challenges and blessings contained therein. When I learned to stop trying to see what is unforeseeable my journey became less erratic and fearful.
The present is like a precious and perishable gift. When I learned to let go of the past and release my fears of the future I began to open it daily and experience it fully as it occurs. This is when I began to live my life and no longer squander it. Every new day has become precious.
So as you count down the minutes perhaps you can also take time to live a million enjoyable moments!

regarding the poll
Yeah, i don’t like it when people get undeservedly pooped on. Other than that, there is a time and place for everything, and people get in where they fit in.

Any one who's been around here knows how big my junk can get.
As for now, I’m saving my junk for someone special so I don’t mind if it stays small.
Feb. 3, 2014?
I have 1,064,966 minutes to wait for the one I think is worth waiting for.
Sorry about your wife.

Close.
One thing I learned from the play/movie Rent is that there are 525,600 minutes in a year. So your track on that year is actually one too many, but besides that you pretty much got the date.
And thanks, Timbo. It was our path, and hers was meant to go in another different direction. We would have been married 13 years as of last September.
Sankey is a dawg.
UW is in the Top 5 for Brissett. Hats off to Sark for this class he’s putting together.
It's simply amazing.
In doing some research, the next few years are looking great for in-state talent. Some put Zach Banner (Lakes) as the second best player overall in next year’s class. Lindquist also looks like a great 2012 QB prospect and is already leaning UW.
Amazing, amazing.
Also, I live in the same dorm as Deontae Cooper and he seems like a really nice guy. Gotta hope that he overcomes the knee injury and dominates, because his youtube videos are ridiculous.
by Cablinasian on Jan 25, 2011 10:07 PM PST up reply actions
Washington now has the top 5 in-state recruits for this year.
Getting Brissett actually isn’t that big of a deal to me since there are some great QB recruits coming up next year. But I guess having him wouldn’t hurt (but I believe he wants to play basketball, and we aren’t interested).
Cooper was incredible last year before getting hurt. UW should have a very powerful running game next year with Polk and Cooper. I’ve also heard he’s a nice guy (and have heard the opposite about Polk, but if he keeps rushing for 284, I guess there’s an ego associated with that).
Wulff must be a sad, sad man right now.
oh, I agree on Brissett.
We have three scholarship QBs right now that are either freshmen or sophomores next year.
In 2012, there’s Jeff Lindquist, and 2013 has Max Browne. Both are supposed to be big, big recruits and UW is the leader for both. Getting Brissett would mean a huge logjam and might keep one of those two from coming. He’s not going to play in 2011, so I’m fine with waiting for Lindquist in 2012.
With the line UW’s constructing, Kearse and Kasen Williams at receiver, the 6’9’’ tight end, and Cooper/Polk, you’d have to think that the job’s pretty easy for Montana or Price. I’m not a Montana fan, but he may be good enough.
by Cablinasian on Jan 25, 2011 10:18 PM PST up reply actions
I want to see Montana play in a real game before making a judgment.
Genetics have to be good for something, I think. I’m more concerned about the offensive line. UW should have a powerful running game with Polk, Cooper (and now Sankey if he plays). Hopefully the line can protect Montana enough to give him a shot.
Of course, defense is a big question mark too. If they show up like they did for the last 4 weeks of the season, all bets are off.
I'm not really concerned about the o-line too much.
Sark’s best recruiting has come at guard and tackle; the two guards both played as freshman last year and are highly regarded. I’m much, much more concerned about depth on the defensive line. The first-string is really good, but injuries could kill us.
The defense will be good if we get pressure on the QB. This means Jamora needs to be really, really good, as he was in the Holiday Bowl.
I really wish that Jamora/Callier/Kohler and co. didn’t have to play as true freshmen last year and waste eligibility, but oh well. They’ll be prepared for next season.
by Cablinasian on Jan 25, 2011 10:30 PM PST up reply actions
Part of the o-line problem this year was just having to change roles so often.
I’ve always respected Nick Holt (probably cause he scares me), but after the Holiday Bowl, I trust that he’ll make things happen. The defensive plan for that game was incredible.
If this recruiting trend continues, UW could be a dangerous team in 2012. That’d make for a fun senior year. Because the basketball team should also be awesome. Next year with Thomas will be nice, and I hear great things about Tony Wroten out of Garfield.
and the games will be in Qwest, which is awesome.
I might have to get tickets next year… definitely in 2012.
The o-line was so much better as the season went along. The change from Nebraska to Cal/WSU/Holiday was tremendous.
Also, Kasen Williams is flat-out ridiculous.

I bought Dawg Pack season tickets
For both football and basketball. Totally worth it in my opinion. I had to miss a few of the football games (but had to get those to get the basketball tickets), and the basketball ones are awesome. Missing the ASU game to study last week was heartbreaking.
yeah, I've considered it.
but I don’t want to have so many basketball games to go to.
I will probably end up getting tickets for the upcoming football year, especially since they’ll be moving the students off the 50 yard line after the renovation. We’ll have to meet up at a game sometime.

Actually went pretty well.
About 1.2 standard deviations, which is by far the best I’ve ever done on one of those tests. Bio was alright and I’m pretty sure organic chem went well. So I’ll take 2/3. How about you?
wow!
A z-score of 1.2 is great — about a 4.2 with the 122 curve. Congrats.
I got an 88/100, but they haven’t put up exam statistics. I’m anticipating a .8ish, which would be about a 4.0.
by Cablinasian on Jan 25, 2011 10:28 PM PST up reply actions
Wow, that's incredible!
Nice work. Isn’t the average in 122 around 2.8?
Is there something I’m missing about Grimble considering UW? I keep seeing his name popping up but haven’t read anything concrete about it.
that's what I'm saying over at the Seattle Times boards.
There is no indication that he’s considering UW any more now as far as I can tell. The thought is that Grimble is close with HS teammate Evan Zeger, who was the first UW commit of the class, and that he’ll convince Grimble to come to Seattle.
If they did add a blue-chip DT to this class, look out. That’s a killer d-line and defense starts there. We also had great secondary/linebacker recruiting in 2010.

Stealing a USC recruit would be make me incredibly happy.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sark pull out one more surprise with this class.
I'm trying not to get my hopes up.
It’s already a 10-20 class nationally, depending on which site you look at. Just fantastic.

With Quizz leaving
Are you completely a Husky fan now?
truth be told, my favorite Beaver is James, not Jacquizz.
I love that program and will always root for them. It just sucks that they don’t have the facilities or money to be a power and get top recruits.
UW might be 1a now. Being on campus, with the momentum of the program, it’s exciting. I’ll definitely still root for both.
by Cablinasian on Jan 25, 2011 10:50 PM PST up reply actions
It's crazy to think that all this recruiting is before the new stadium.
The renovations to Husky Stadium will only help recruiting. Seattle sports might finally be getting some things going their way (except the Mariners). Let’s hope some of the good fortune makes its way down I-5.
the thing is that it's not like we're killing recruiting in California.
Five of our best commits are from Washington… and that’s bankable, year in and year out. If we do start winning, recruiting will open up elsewhere and we’ll have local talent and possibly a few blue-chippers from various places.
Interesting how opposite the UO and UW recruiting strategies are. UW is recruiting almost exclusively on the west coast and establishing connections here, while UO is conceding some of Cali and trying to get into Texas and Florida.
by Cablinasian on Jan 25, 2011 10:57 PM PST up reply actions
I think Oregon is in a different stage as a program.
They have a lot more success to sell to recruits from the south. UW beating Nebraska must have helped, but I think it’ll take another year or two before UW really gets back on the national scene.
Once the facilities are top class, things will get interesting. Oregon has always had a step up because of facilities. But with those closer to even, I’ve got to think Seattle is a lot more appealing than Eugene.
Yeah, but UW's class has rivaled Oregon's for two years in a row and that's without success on the field.
I gotta think that UW will be a perennial top ten recruiting power if they are doing this coming off of 7-6 and 5-7.
And recruiting in Texas and Florida’s good and all, but if it comes at the expense of California and it’s a wash? It only helps the rest of the Pac-12 since more Cali recruits are available.
by Cablinasian on Jan 25, 2011 11:07 PM PST up reply actions
It'd be awesome to get UW to the level of USC in recruiting power.
How are they able to get a full class right now? Don’t they have sanctions on the number of scholarships they can offer or does that kick in next year?
I’m amazed Sankey could be talked into UW when it’s almost certain that he’ll redshirt next year. But behind Callier, Deontae, and Sankey in two years, the running game will be a lot of fun to watch. By that time there should also be a solid QB selected.
It’s also good to hear that Jake had a good day at the Senior Bowl today. I think his work ethic can really take him places. It’s sad that he basically wasted two years without being coached.
It's a weird situation with SC.
They appealed the restriction, allowing them to push them off another year… 12-14 instead of 11-13. They’re also enrolling some of the recruits early and counting them toward last year’s class.
They are unlikely to have their ban lessened, but it helps them build some depth. But the next few years will be brutal and will make recruiting for UW easier.
by Cablinasian on Jan 25, 2011 11:15 PM PST up reply actions
I could see them getting rid of the bowl restriction.
So that current athletes aren’t punished and whatnot. But I don’t think they well (or that they should) take away the scholarship restriction. I guess this is their last big chance to get a good recruiting class.
yup.
Meanwhile, I’m entranced by Kasen Williams videos on youtube.

The guy is huge.
Part of it is being in high school, but he just looks huge compared to everyone else on the field.
he reminds me of Julio Jones.
He also has huge hands.
by Cablinasian on Jan 25, 2011 11:33 PM PST up reply actions
To get even more excited..
Watch some video of Tony Wroten. If Romar can secure another big man to replace MBA, the Huskies will have a great year in basketball next season.
and it's great to see Jake doing well.
Mortensen said he’s going to go first round for sure, and might go in the top half. Miami really likes him and they pick #15. That’d be a very good situation for him.
by Cablinasian on Jan 25, 2011 11:15 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, I expected him to move up once coaches see him.
I think it’s more than likely he goes top 15.
oh, and the average in my 122 class was a 3.0.
the thought is that they’re “cutting off the tail” with each physics class, so the mean goes up. I had a 2.8 for 121, a 3.0 for 122, and will have a 3.1 or 3.2 for 123.
by Cablinasian on Jan 25, 2011 10:35 PM PST up reply actions
Oh, that's good.
Then even after dropping the lowest test, this should still be good for a 4.0ish. After doing terribly in physics last quarter, that’s very welcome news.
I think that the test results are static.
If people drop a test, it doesn’t affect its mean. So you can count on a z-score of 1.2.
by Cablinasian on Jan 25, 2011 10:53 PM PST up reply actions
Hmm, our professor said that tests being dropped result in the means going up. Not sure how it works…he must be referring to the means of the tests that students choose to keep, if that makes sense.
wow, that really sucks.
In my classes, they’ve been static. That goes against the whole idea of test statistics, to only take the higher part of a sample.
by Cablinasian on Jan 25, 2011 10:58 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, I think the physics grading is constant among classes though
So hopefully you’re right and the z-scores don’t change. Regardless, even if it changes a bit, it should be good for a 4.0. Now I just need to do that again somehow.
only have to do it once in two tries, so the pressure's off a bit.
In 122, I had two great exams and one really awful one. I do love the two out of three system…
