Schroeder: Blazers To Call Up Chris Johnson?

D-League guru Scott Schroeder reports on NBA Fanhouse that the Portland Trail Blazers will be calling up big man Chris Johnson... -------------------------- The Portland Trail Blazers are without Marcus Camby for the next few weeks due to a partially torn meniscus in his knee, but a source close to the situation has told FanHouse that the Blazers are calling up the NBA D-League's best replica in Dakota's Chris Johnson. The Blazers, currently with 15 players under contract, will have to release someone in order to sign Johnson with the most likely option being seldom-used Sean Marks. -------------------------- Last Tuesday, Portland's Director of NBA Scouting Mike Born told Blazers.com in an interview that Johnson was one of the five most impressive players at this year's D-League Showcase. Johnson worked out for the Blazers twice before the 2009 NBA draft. Workout reports here and here. Johnson is averaging 17.2 points and 9.7 rebounds in 27 games so far this season for the Dakota Wizards. Update (9:34): Matt Calkins of The Columbian reports Sunday night that Marks may in fact be safe. -------------------------- Portland was granted a hardship exception that enables the team to sign a 16th player to as many as two 10-day contracts, which would allow the Blazers to evaluate Johnson (or another player) as the February 24 trade deadline looms. In order to qualify for the exception, a team must first lose three players due to injury for three games each, and each player must be projected to sit out at least two weeks. The Blazers met this criteria via Greg Oden, Brandon Roy and Elliot Williams. Then, a fourth player must miss three games due to injury, which occurred Saturday when Camby sat out against the Pacers. -------------------------- -- Ben Golliver | benjamin.golliver@gmail.com | Twitter Thanks to Blazer Guy for getting to a similar report first in the FanShots.
