Blazer Chatter: Joel Przybilla's Future

Here's your weekend-long thread for all Blazer conversations not covered in another post.  You can discuss any Blazer-related subjects you wish here but we always start with a seed question.  Today's:   Does Joel Przybilla have any future with the Blazers beyond this season?  If so, what do you foresee?  If not, would you be willing to trade him before the deadline though that leaves the team centerless save for Sean Marks?

Weigh in on this or other Blazer topics below.

Considering Camby is down

I think it’s unlikely Joel will be traded unless it’s a filler in a much larger trade to land us somebody really good. I just doubt it though.

Nicolas Batum is the future of the Blazers

Yes

Joel has an excellent chance to be a Blazer in the future, price willing. Until we know what is going to be up with Greg, then Joel should be a lock unless Cho has something up his sleeve. Legit bigs are a commodity and Joel is showing that he on his way back and is a Legit man in the middle for this team.

"price willing"

If he has expectations of starter money ($10M) or platoon-player money ($6-8M), it won’t be happening.

If he can deal with a role as a “3rd Center” (veteran’s minimum to $3M or so), I expect the Blazers will re-sign him.

Since they’re already on the hook for Camby’s salary and have declared their intention to bring back Oden, the budget for a 3rd Center won’t be much bigger than that…

He's already said that he's saved up enough money

I think the real question could be “Does Joel Pryzbilla have a future in the NBA?” If he wants to play, I think he stays.

Portland could coast along with their superior talent and stay right with us. Now that Portland woke up, the hammer cometh down.

If he continues to improve,

and finds some semblance of his old self, then he should get a better offer from another team. He was a terrific backup center, a passable starter (plenty good enough on most nights, because there are so few great pivots in the association), and far too good to be a third center.

His picks, his rebounds, his size, his leadership, his willingness to sacrifice his body, he is a legitimate center, and I think that other coaches would love to have him.

I admit that he has a ways to go before he makes it back, though, some pretty ragged looks so far, but a couple of good ones too.

by damonrayhymer on Jan 22, 2011 9:10 AM PST up reply actions

it really depends on what his body is able to do!!

He says he is not 100% and wants to remain uninjured.
It seems like it would be really difficult to trust one’s knee after what happened!!!
So how much of what Joel has to do will be mental vs physical!!!
The guy is amazing as far as grit and determination go…still seems like it would be an uphill climb to not think about “what if I do this…and get injured again?”

I would not trade him

Our frontline is so thin, and there are so few solid centers out there, that I would sit down with Joel and offer a 1 or 2 year contract at a reasonable price until we know what’s up with Oden and whether he will be back or we have found a servicable replacement. I would keep Camby and Joel and hope that between them we have a full time center for most of the next year and a half while we figure out the Oden situation.

I do see the Blazers extending some kind of offer to Przybilla. Once healthy, even with his limitations, he will again be a valuable backup. Playing at 70-80%, he’s still better than half of the backup 5s in this league. Maybe more. You can’t teach basketball IQ and Joel’s is sky high. That said, he can’t sustain another season-ending injury or I believe he will retire. Even if he signed an extension, I think if he re-injured himself such that it ended his year, he would just call it quits rather than rehab and come back again at his age. So, stay healthy Joel! We love ya man.

I kind of think that might be in the cards anyway.

I’d bet if the Blazers don’t extend him, or the Bucks don’t make an offer, he’ll just retire.

I would only trade him for another big

We don’t need any more guards or forwards. Armon and Babbit are both promising but never see the court, what’s the point in trading away our only legit center for more depth where we don’t need it?

I don't think there's a deal out there...

He’s too dinged… The attraction would simply be as a salary dump…

especially as part of a package

but I think Camby gets traded and Prz stays. And – I think the assets the Blazers want to pick up are draft picks or someone like Randolph (versatile 4/5 big) or maybe a PG. I just don’t see a valid PGOTF trade target.

For this year, I think Camby and Joel stays for sure.

Camby can play the four if LMA gets hurt. If Greg is ready and comes back next year then we can make another decision. I would love to keep Joel, Camby and Greg; let Marks go.

by BBK on Jan 21, 2011 9:16 PM PST up reply actions

right...

A salary dump would mean some other team giving us a player with a big salary in exchange for Joel and his expiring contract. Not at all saying it should be Eddy Curry, but for the sake of the argument, there’s a salary dump that returns a center. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Donald Sterling is stupid enough to trade Kaman for it.

by superfly05 on Jan 21, 2011 7:26 PM PST up reply actions

I wouldn't be surprised if he retired.

He’s made a lot of money and he’s 32 this year, and he’s been pretty banged up with a couple of incredibly serious injuries, and wasn’t he just talking about how he’s played way longer than he thought he would? And he’s not a guy who I see as wanting to cling to fame or anything, he’s had a solid eleven-year career. And I think he could leave knowing he gave everything he had while he was here.

I think it’s very possible he hangs ‘em up. That’s what I’d do.

by Blzr fan on Jan 21, 2011 7:20 PM PST up reply actions

It just depends

Joel already left money on the table to re-sign with Portland once before. He’s loyal. I think he’ll probably be closer to his old form next season, and if that’s the case I’d keep him, if he want’s to play. That’s the $64,000 question. Is he going to want to play for a couple more years? I think it all depends on the moves Cho makes.

by Eric Loftin on Jan 21, 2011 8:57 PM PST up reply actions

But I think Joel might be the kind of guy who would

He has said that he has saved up a lot of money, suggesting he knows that if he didn’t sign another contract, he could still live quite comfortably for the remainder of his life.

I think for guys like him, it is a question of how badly he wants the competition vs how badly does he want to spend time with his family and be able to walk without discomfort.

by hercher on Jan 22, 2011 7:05 AM PST up reply actions

Sometimes quality of life means more than money.

Perhaps Joel feels that any more injuries could seriously impact his life after basketball. He might be thinking “what’s the point of limping around after basketball for couple million when I already have $X million saved up already?” That would be the type of thought process I would be having if I was a professional athlete and coming off major knee surgery.

The cake was a lie.

by xedubx on Jan 22, 2011 12:43 PM PST up reply actions

Don't think so myself

He also talked about how much he missed it when he wasn’t playing. Joel love the game, I don’t think he’ll walk away from it as long as he can still play.

by greenknight on Jan 22, 2011 1:14 AM PST up reply actions

I think any deal Portland makes at this point (Przybilla or otherwise) HAS to return a big. The best thing we could do is upgrade our PG/C rotation in one move, but I don’t see that happening yet. As we get closer to the deadline, I think some things will become available that we haven’t heard about yet. I think it’s possible that Cho makes a move, but I don’t see it being likely unless it’s a sweetheart of a deal.

by Eric Loftin on Jan 21, 2011 6:07 PM PST reply actions

too early to say

we really need to see how he looks playing out the rest of the year.

he’ll get offers to play somewhere next year – no doubt. if guys like Marks can find a job, Przy certainly can. whether his next 2-3 years are as a solid backup or a deep bench 3rd stringer depend largely on how much further he can recover from his injuries.

Prz has shown that he can still impact the game

he knows how to play around his offensive limitations – something not all poor-shooting bigs can do.

I think Przybilla’s future might hinge on how well the Blazers do without Camby over the next three weeks. If they are able to adjust like I think they can, Camby is one of the more valuable trade assets. If he is gone, Prz’s return is more likely.

but he’s a shell of what he was on the court. If he was the old Joel, I say keep him at almost any cost. But now, I’m not sure if he’s anything more than a 12th man. Th only reason we still play him Is because Camby, Oden, and Pendegraff are all out.

He's definitely not the same guy.

Has trouble getting to the rebounds and blocks that he’d normally get. You can clearly see the frustration from Joel.

by xedubx on Jan 22, 2011 12:44 PM PST up reply actions

He's still rehabbing

He may never be the same guy, but most of what Joel brings to the table is his heart. THAT will always be there. He’s a savvy vet who’s never really been an above the rim guy. He’s on his way back and will be a solid contributor for a team next year. I’m hoping it’s for the blazers.

I went to the game on Thursday and watched Wednesday game on the net, Joel passed the eye test. As he gets more minutes and continues his rehab, his lateral motion will improve. His man on D was great as usual.

I’d give him the MLE if he contiues to get healthier.

People seem to be forgetting that Camby could be an excellent b/u for the PF position if both Oden and Joel are on the roster and healthy next year. Pendy is still to foul prone to warrant extended minutes as a backup, even if he comes back healthy next year.

by CougzRule on Jan 22, 2011 1:06 PM PST up reply actions

I think this is an important point.

Would Pendergraph be getting Joel’s minutes if he’s were healthy? As Joel looks right now I’d have to say yes. If Joel can get moving and jumping better, then no. If Joel thinks he’ll be the 3rd or 4th center on next year’s team, he’ll probably find a better opportunity elsewhere.

i think we keep him

he’s a serviceable backup big. We get to benefit from the expiring contract which is big with brandon’s contract around our necks. And he has talked about retiring so the money’s not the biggest issue as far as what he needs. He should be fairly cheap, although not necessarily at the veteran’s minimum. But he’s a known quantity for whatever we pay him unless milwaukie makes an offer. He said he wants to retire as either a blazer or a buck. And he might be less valuable coming off double knee surgery than he was. More valuable as an expiring contract.

Sorry HG

I was over at FV, arguing with some dimwit about consistency.
Yeah, what I got was that Nico thinks Love almost misses on purpose, trying to get the rebound. I think his impression is that Love stat pads. I have noticed that he gets a lot of rebounds easily in garbage time, and I think that might have been what he noticed. Idk, have to ask Nic. My French is not so good, lol!
Publicly, Nico was “cool” with losing his 5 job, but the blog makes it clear he wasn’t. Him and Nate talked though, and I think that says a lot about Nate.
I really, really liked what he had to say about Lamarcus in the locker room and stuff. Good read (rough though!)

Here's what I would do if I were Cho

Offer a no-trade clause, and 4 million a year for 4 years, last year being a team option. He’s been a great Trailblazer, might as well make him a blazer for life. Tell him he can retire when he wishes, until then he can earn a decent contract in the town where he made a name for himself. He can be the backup center for a few years at least, and we couldn’t ask for a better one. Get a legit PF/C 6th man type and adding Joel to the mix would make it a completely solid rotation with a real center healthy (Camby or Oden hopefully).

Centers don't come cheap

Even 32 year old centers with injury histories.

He is still a 7ft body with high BBIQ, fantastic attitude and a great locker room presence. His value is higher than his on-court production.

I do believe that 4 years is too long though given the injury history. I would offer 12m/3y with the 3rd being a team option.

by Dobbler on Jan 21, 2011 11:47 PM PST up reply actions

For well below MLE money

I think hes a pretty good bargain, of course the new CBA will say something about it I am sure. I’m certainly negotiable on the years part, but for fully insured with a no-trade clause, I still think 4 mil a year is a good deal for Przy and I’d love to see him retire a Blazer. You could sign him for less and tie in the max signing bonus to add up to that amount… I realize its easy to give up PA’s money, but for what we’d get for that price, Joel is the best we could hope for, I honestly believe. 7ft centers do NOT come cheap, as you point out. For 7 foot centers, his injury history is not actually that horrific, and his ability to come back from these injuries, given their severity, is quite impressive. One more big one will force him to retire anyway, and I’m sure he’d be happy with a buyout in that case. Show him we want him, for everything he brings to the table, and that hes not just another contract, and I’m sure we’d be able to negotiate price.

Trade Joel or Marcus?

I am hoping we’ll find ourselves in at least 7th and possibly 6th in the West by the trade deadline, so I’m hoping we’ll stay pat for this season. I don’t believe either Joel or Marcus wants to be traded, and they’ve both hinted at retiring if they are. I’d sure like to ride this season out with the guys we’ve got. Recent Quotes...

Recent Quotes from Przybilla make me believe his future as a player in the N.B.A. will be determined primarily by himself.

Sounds like his priorites are shifting from being a professional player…to life after basketball….

And I think that’s great.

As much as I like Przybilla, as much as I have enjoyed his play….if he is not comfortable with his knees or continuing to put the stress on his knees that play requires? Or even if he has simply decided to move on? I support that.

For The Blazers he currently is an asset as both a player and an expiring contract…what The Blazers should do with this asset is a slightly seperate debate as to what future Joel may have with The Blazers and/or within the N.B.A.. Even though both topics are are interwoven together.

The way Joel is talking? I think retirement is looming. Next Season? The Following?…only Joel really knows..

I’d like to see Joel retire a Blazer…but…any way you slice it, Joel is not a long term answer to the center position. If The Blazers can benefit from trading him? I suppose you must divorce yourself from sentimentality and make that move….

Joel says he has saved his money, he seems to be slowly transforming himself from the reality of being a player…to post player life….

Whatever happens I wish him well…

Joel has value

Joel can help us get into the ‘melo talks more fully. Joel, Camby, Batum, and draft pick(s) for Carmelo and Harrington. Let’s get this done. Post lockout line-up of Mills, Roy/Matthews, Anthony, Aldridge, Oden takes us over the top.

by deusXmachina on Jan 22, 2011 12:37 PM PST via mobile reply actions

If we can get a draft pick for him...

you gotta make that deal. That is what I think we’ll end up doing. I actually expect a flurry of moves from Cho in quick succession that will pretty clearly show his plan (which I believe will show a penchant for rebuilding through the draft).

I love Joel, too, and if we can use his expiring contract to grab a big FA, great, but I expect us to get something more tangible out of Joel than cap space.

With the CBA uncertainty (will retiring player’s contracts still even matter), I do expect Joel to be dealt,
