1/10/11 Junk Drawer: Oregon Ducks Edition
There's a rumor going around that there's a football game tonight.
For some reason, I'm more psyched about this game than I've been for a football game in years, and I didn't even go to school in Oregon. Is it because of that video? The fast-paced offense? The hype?
Blazersedge Nation -- Are YOU excited for the game? Got any plans for tonight?
For Portland people, if you don't want to go all of the way down to Eugene to see some Oregon Ducks, the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden is a good place to get some close-up views of beautiful birds.
(Thanks, Wikipedia, for the glamor shots.)

Just the ones we already knew about
But there’s a pair of great horned owls up in Ridgefield we haven’t been able to see, even though we could hear them calling to one another yesterday. Even though we weren’t able to spot them, it was cool to hear them being so vocal during the day.
Wiggada Wiggada Zers!
I choose Hooded Merganser cos it sounded the dirtiest
And I’m excited for the game. I want to be front row to jump aboard the bandwagon of madness or to witness the collective heartbreak of this state.
She'll be right.
I love this sentiment. I will probably be just following along online, since I don’t have cable, and don’t feel like going out. I think I hope the Ducks win, but I’m not highly invested.
It depends...
When I think about my good friends that went to the UofO I want the Ducks to win so they are happy. When I think about that guy at the Blazer game last night in full UofO face paint I can’t help but root for the Tigers. I guess I am indifferent though. Definitely not looking forward to hearing the Heat-like obnoxiousness some fans will protrude should the Ducks win.
"He lobbied for Steve Freaking Blake to start ahead of Miller last year." - John Hollinger
Yeah, I'm definitely not invested much in this
But it’s exciting to see people excited. Besides for that obnoxious factor Escrote mentions^, I’d be happy for the NW to get some recognition.
Going out was a debate for me, as going to a sports bar to watch a game when one is not indulging in intoxicants currently is kinda annoying. But I think it’ll be worth it, and I’m a model of self-control and temperance.
She'll be right.

This is the stupidest rational on why Auburn will win...and I have been hearing it for a month
7. The Tigers have come back from double-digit deficits four times. They have won four games by three points or fewer, six games by no more than eight points. The Ducks have won one game by fewer than 11 points. That could be interpreted as a sign of Oregon’s dominance. Give me a team that knows how to win a close game. Give me a team that knows how not to panic when it falls behind. (From ESPN)
So the basic idea is that the Ducks beat the crap out of everyone…..and that somehow means they won’t beat Auburn.
Harry Bosch: "Everybody counts....or nobody counts."
I agree
to come from behind and beat georgia means you have to fall behind them first.
i keep dancing on my own
To be fair,
The overall quality of play in the SEC is superior to the PAC10. Not bashing Oregon at all, they whooped everybody on the way to being undefeated and deserve to be in the finals, but Auburn faces tougher competition more than Oregon does, so that is an indication that Oregon may not be used to facing touch a tough team and if they lose the lead they could lose their cool, while Auburn is more used to facing that competition and are able to battle back if they get behind. It makes sense.
Nicolas Batum is the future of the Blazers
You stated much better the thoughts I have as to why I think the Ducks might struggle/lose this game.
She'll be right.
Auburn also has much bigger, more physical players on the lines.
For me, that’s a big deal.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
The Ducks have played from behind a number of times (Including against Stanford, and admittedly tough team ) and never once panicked…which is what they are saying would happen. Of all the things that might happen…this is way down my list

One of the biggest myths/half-truths in sports is that good teams win close games. Its a log of hog-wash. All types of teams win close games (yes, good teams win a higher % of the close games they are in, but crappy teams win close games also). Its much more accurate to say “good teams beat the crap out of teams” than “good teams win close games.”
long live the jd.
Good teams do win close games.
The best teams do not play close games. They blow teams out.
The cake was a lie.
Oh alright....they blow teams out given they don't play in a weak conference like Boise State.
Pac-10 was one of two best conference in NCF this year…Best conference in mind of many people that does not live in the deep south.
The cake was a lie.
depends what sport you are talking.
The best NBA team ever lost 10 games.
"He lobbied for Steve Freaking Blake to start ahead of Miller last year." - John Hollinger
While posting +12.2 point differential.
Not many close games there, it would seem.
The cake was a lie.
at least 10 of them
"He lobbied for Steve Freaking Blake to start ahead of Miller last year." - John Hollinger
but what made them great was that point differential (ie beating the daylights out of teams), not winning a good % of their close games.
long live the jd.
I don't know...
I see your point but if a team goes on to win 73 games but only has a +8 point differential who is going to go down as the best NBA team ever?
"He lobbied for Steve Freaking Blake to start ahead of Miller last year." - John Hollinger
ding.ding.ding
And, again, none of this matters in an of itself. The Dream Team’s ridiculous record and point diff has just as much to do with the teams being played against as the actual ability level of the team.
This is why sports stats require measurement analyses if we want to make actually inferences about the abilities of teams that don’t play one another.
She'll be right.
Yeah I guess it is a never ending circular argument....
i.e. a perfect topic for the Junk Drawer…. I love you guys!
"He lobbied for Steve Freaking Blake to start ahead of Miller last year." - John Hollinger
It's also an idea that's been brewing in my head for a submission for the Sloan Sports Conference
Not nearly enough thought has gone into how to estimate individual or team basketball ability using the data and measurement model as opposed to just trying to transform the raw data.
She'll be right.
It just seems like something impossible to quantify...
it is like MJ saying he would average over 40 a night in today’s NBA.
"He lobbied for Steve Freaking Blake to start ahead of Miller last year." - John Hollinger
Anything can be estimated (to varying degrees of success)
There are certain things that’d be impossible to control for entirely (e.g., rule changes), but the key to a good measurement model in this situation would be one that’d allow one to take the data available as an indicator of the unquantifiable ability as opposed to being a measure in and of itself. I’d probably determine a relative ability level based on each year and see how different years end up in terms of overall team ability and top team ability.
She'll be right.
maybe I am missing something but I don't know how you could do that...
all you can really compare LeBron to is his peers. All you can compare MJ to is his peers. There are no peers in common so how can you really accurately compare the two? Some may say competition was better in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, etc. but it doesn’t seem to me there is a way to quantify that because it is all relative. Maybe I am missing something though.
"He lobbied for Steve Freaking Blake to start ahead of Miller last year." - John Hollinger
it's certainly going to be difficult.
There are two ways to think about it:
1) By estimating everyone compared to everyone else, we can get a better representation of how certain individuals rank. So, that’s to say, it’s just about how MJ (or the Bulls) did in comparison with the other teams but how all of those teams did in comparison with each other. By looking at this, we might be able to come up with something closer to a scale that would make those comparisons more realistic.
2) While only comparing MJ to his peers and LBJ to his might leave for no peers in common, if we were to run ^this estimation routine on every year between then and now, we actually would build an ‘anchor’ of sorts that would connect those two (and any other player from any era) together. Now, players change, so there will still be error (sad example: Brandon might literally look like a different player between last year going back and this year moving forward), but it’s not quite as isolated as it seems.
The largest source of error will come from rule changes and discrepancies in how rules are officiated, I believe.
She'll be right.
Post a link on BE if you do it.
"He lobbied for Steve Freaking Blake to start ahead of Miller last year." - John Hollinger
I'll definitely share with you all if I make it there.
The key will be getting the data organized right.
She'll be right.
So after last nights game (what game?...you know what game), I decided to re-write the lyrics to the Grinch song
Here is what i got (before deciding not to doing a full treatment)
You are a douche-bag, Mister James
You really are a heel
You’re bout as cuddly as Kobe
and as lovable as Shaquille, Mr James
Just a bloated sense of entitlement with a license to steal!
You’re a big jerk, Mister James,
Your heart’s an empty hole,
The refs are in your pocket, you’ve got a calculator for a soul, Mister James
I think you’re a size thirty-nine-and-a-half A-hole!

Even if Stanford does get Peterson, he’s not going to stay forever and Luck only has one more year.
I think it would be pretty funny if Stanford hired Bellotti.

why wouldn't Peterson stay forever? He's stayed at BSU for quite a while.
And, yeah, I’d like Peterson going there for next year. Luck is awesome and he deserves a good final year.

it is nice to see a kid finally excited to enter the real world. I am proud of OSU for getting him ready quickly for his career.
"He lobbied for Steve Freaking Blake to start ahead of Miller last year." - John Hollinger
I am happy for him...
RB’s (and football players in general) can only take so many hits. He isn’t going to improve his draft stock any by sticking around. I think it is great he got prepared in such a short period of time to enter the NFL.
"He lobbied for Steve Freaking Blake to start ahead of Miller last year." - John Hollinger
Just my speculation but if James had been healthy all year
It would be the other Rodger leaving town and the other one staying.
"He lobbied for Steve Freaking Blake to start ahead of Miller last year." - John Hollinger
That's good for him.
I respect players staying like Locker and Luck did, but in a year that so many players are staying, I think the smart option is to go for the draft since he’ll likely get picked higher.

Doesn’t this really hurt OSU going into next year?
by anupam on Jan 10, 2011 1:59 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
On the surface it does...
but I think there could be a Patrick Ewing effect. Quizz was so good that I think the coaches got lazy in play calling. I think this is going to put a premium on spreading the ball around and keeping it creative.
"He lobbied for Steve Freaking Blake to start ahead of Miller last year." - John Hollinger
It all depends on how much Katz and (especially) the O line develop
James Rodgers, Bishop, Wheaton, and Hallahuni (sp?) are a very good crop of receivers. But that line was a sieve last year, particularly in pass protection. If they don’t improve, it’s a 6 win team. If they do, 8-9 wins and a top 3 Pac 10 finish are very attainable with that offense.
Kevin Durant won me over when he went Rocky IV on Russia this summer.
by blazeraddict on Jan 10, 2011 2:15 PM PST up reply actions
that is a fair assessment...
I wonder if there is more or less motivation for the O-line now that Quizz is gone. Also who steps it up as the RB next year? I think Terron Ward could be the real deal… a bit of a late bloomer like his brother.
"He lobbied for Steve Freaking Blake to start ahead of Miller last year." - John Hollinger
I'm a Duck fan, so my knowledge of OSU is limited to what I saw on TV/press
coverage. Is Terron Ward related to former walk on Duck safety/Cleveland Brown TJ Ward? If so, between Wheaton and Ward, that’s another house divided :)

That's not bad. Intel should be worried enough about the rise of form factors preferring the ARM processor.
Last time the were threatened by cheap CPUs for lower performance devices they started Centrino. This time they don’t seem to have a great answer yet.
There was an article this morning with an Intel exec, explaining why they aren't as concerned about ARM as expected
I’ll see if I can dig it up in a few. It was at least interesting to hear the discussion.

That's assuming the allegations are true.
I’m hoping they’re not.
Which is fine by me, for it's that way in many civilized societies (e.g., Canada, England, et cetera).
Undoubtedly, the most important factor with this case here is whether or not the female involved was physically forced by the male into performing a sexual act.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
For me, the big thing here is the matter of consent or lack thereof.
If the female involved in this whole ordeal was physically raped, then this person must be booted off the team, kicked out of school, and sent to prison.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."

Crazy run play there by Auburn.
Can’t recall I’ve ever seen a play like that where the runner thinks he’s down, but wasn’t, and is aware enough to keep the play going by running off for several more yards.

That hurt, but Auburn had 90 seconds left and only needed about 20 more yards even if he was down there. The plays that really killed Oregon were, you guessed it, the safety and the illegal shift on the prior play. That and getting stoned after having 1st and goal in the 5.

Oregon was good enough to win today, except for two short yardage situations, the safety and the stand by Auburn. Very even game though, so you can’t really say one team was clearly more deserving.
long live the jd.
Aside from a couple of snafus on coverage.
The Ducks D really stepped up and kept the offense in the game. Cam has no future in the NFL as a QB. For all the speed the Ducks talk about, they really need it in the wide receiver corp.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
Ducks D was impressive. Their O has been overrated and their D underrated all year, but it was still surprising that the offense was held under 20 points.
long live the jd.
I think the offense did fine.
They had to settle for a short field goal early and turned it over on downs at the 1 yard line. The running game never got going because Fairley took away the inside zone read. Thomas settled down and played well enough to win. Combine that with poor field position throughout the entire game, the Ducks just couldn’t sustain long drives.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
hmm
yeah, plus Thomas had the red zone pick. That’s a good point. They moved the ball well enough to score in the 30s.
Cam missed quite a few opportunities with poor throws, both at the goal line and when big plays were there to be made.

Good game
Gotta give Chip credit for his game plan… he’s been agressive all year, but I thought he would go conservative in the big game. He went for it at all the right times.
As for Cam, not impressed. I heard he was tough, but I didn’t see any toughness in the second half. He looked very soft for someone as big as he is
Chip calls some real head scratchers sometimes.
Going for 2 after that first touchdown was very strange in general, but pitching it to your kicker on the option and risking him taking a big hit just seems dumb. That play develops one step slower and he gets crushed at the goal line. I dont risk my kicker early in a game that could easily come down to a last minute kick(and it did). It worked though, chip got his 2 points…

It wasn't as clear as the makers of the video believe it was, in my opinion.
In the Sugar Bowl, it was the back of the hand/wrist. I don’t think that the replay here showed any irrefutable evidence. It was a close call, and I think the right call was made.

For 10 months, the children of the New Creation Church in Montgomery County collected pennies and brought them to Sunday services. They dropped them into a 5-gallon bottle, the kind that fits upside down into water coolers.
After 30,000 pennies, brought in by adults as well, the bottle was full. So the pastor started storing pennies in a bag. Her plan: collect 100,000 coins in the “Penny Project” and donate $1,000 to an organization that helps poor children.
Sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning, the Wheaton area church was broken into, and about 40,000 pennies were stolen, Montgomery police said.
What’s more, the intruder appears to have gone into the church freezer, pulled out hamburger meat and cooked a meal. And the thief went on to a church computer and looked at pornography – leaving the vulgar images on the screen that shocked a deacon just before Sunday services.
