9-9-10 Junk of my depression

Welcome to the Junk of my depression.

Star-divide

I'm going to suck all the fun out of the internets.  Like a vaccuum.  Or one of those women Tom is always talking about.  Rules are depressing, how about I post some of those?

The daily Junk Drawer (JD) fanpost is the place for true off-topic conversation and people's random thoughts.  Its purpose was simple from its infancy; a place where people could come and chat about all of the "whatevers" that didn't fit with the rest of the site and even be loose in terms of byplay and humor.  The goal was to foster community...to let people who wanted to get to know each other outside of what they could discern from the strictly basketball posts.  We've had happy JD's, sad ones, drawers that looked like a sharing circle, drawers that resembled open mic night at the comedy club... and people have really become a family here.

So if you have a one-off thought, consider posting it here. The rules about importance and significance of the topic are suspended in each JD but keep some of these basic rules in mind:

  1. Ad hominem attacks and swearing will never be tolerated
  2. Remember everything you write is visible publicly
  3. Don't use the JD call out or talk about users from other BEdge threads.
  4. Be mindful that every image posted slows down the JD, so use discretion in how many you post (you can also link to images you want to share so that they will not overwhelm the JD). When you do post images, put something in the subject line of the comment so that the image can be minimized.

Depressed yet?

No?

How about some depressing quotes?

In a real dark night of the soul, it is always three o'clock in the morning, day after day.
F. Scott Fitzgerald

Tears are often the telescope by which men see far into heaven.
Henry Ward Beecher

If you board the wrong train, it is no use running along the corridor in the other direction.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Good humor is the health of the soul, sadness is its poison.
Lord Chesterfield

Let your tears come. Let them water your soul.
Eileen Mayhew

The secret source of humor itself is not joy, but sorrow. There is no humor in heaven.
Mark Twain

To perceive is to suffer.
Aristotle

The walls we build around us to keep sadness out also keeps out the joy.
Jim Rohn

Few people can be happy unless they hate some other person, nation, or creed.
Bertrand Russel

Death row is a state of mind.
Doris Ann Foster

Would it depress you if this was goodbye?  if we never saw each other again?  What if this was the last thing I typed?  wait, I put a question mark after that, so that doesn't work...

OK, this JD is lame, I apologize, but I'm just not depressed about losing my job.  Sure, making money is nice... and helpful in paying the mortgage.  Maybe it's the pills talking, but I view this as an opportunity to right the path of my career and take back control  of my creativity.  I'm excited to have some time to get introspective, explore ideas I've only flirted with in the past, stop taking instructions from the man.

I'm still researching how to properly market it...

which is problematic since I hate pimping myself out and would much rather let my work do the talking… I haven’t even gotten into modes of financing yet… though I know about what start-up costs would be… Most of the people I’ve spoken with so far have suggested contracting for a while till things get moving, so I’m looking into that. It hasn’t even been 2 weeks yet though, so I’m still exploring ideas instead of attempting to implement them

Wayne took it off the cocktail waitress’s tray, gave it back to Michael, grabbed a hundred-dollar chip from Michael’s stack and put it on the cocktail waitress’s tray. Then he said, “That’s how we tip in Las Vegas, Michael.”

It was pretty strange.

I had trouble thinking for a few weeks after and I pretty much collapsed in a store a few days after hitting my head. I didn’t pass out but I lost my balance and became really disorientated. Also, I hit my head a second time right after the first fall. I had to take a lift up since I was snowboarding and I fell below the parking lot. I was still out of it so when I got off the lift I sorta just stood there. The lift hit me in the helmet.

awesome!

my aunt(the I spend last weekend with) has two big dogs, a golden retriever and a black lab. the black lab is a big dummy but he’s a super sweety and he always comes into the bed or couch you’re sleeping on really early in the morning and slobbers on ya, which is annoying but kind of cute. The retriever had just had his toe removed cause he had cancer in the toe so he had the big sad cone on his head and also a muzzle because he was reaching his leg over his head, into the cone, and managing to lick the wound. So he was all sad and calm and tied to the couch and couldn’t walk around, so I made sure to give him lots of attention. They both shed like crazy, but especially the retriever, so when I came home all my clothes were covered in blonde dog hair. I kinda miss it :-(

So we saw a couple of movies aimed at the adult-couple demographic recently.

Which ones? “Couples Resort” and “Date Night”.

What is wrong with writers in Hollywood? Are they not even trying anymore? “Put a couple stars on it, spend a couple days writing something that kind of makes sense. Don’t worry, people will still pay to see it.” I’m so glad we rented these movies, and didn’t see them at the theater, because I’d have asked for my money back. What am I supposed to say? “Congratulations, you kind of made me laugh twice in two hours”?

but there was something about Date Night that I found absolutely freaking hilarious.

We laughed a couple times.

I enjoyed the “kill shot” thing, and the “how could you take someone else’s reservation?” running gag was entertaining. But beyond that, I ended up web surfing through a lot of it.

Couples Resort and Date Night shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence. Timmay’s point still stands though, cos without Steve Carell and Tina Fey (And Mark Wahlberg to a lesser extent) it would’ve been awful.

they made me laugh a lot.

they were both just being themselves the whole movie and it totally cracked me up. I haven’t seen it since, so maybe it was just a “right movie at the right time” kind of thing, but I left the theater pretty damn happy with that one.

Warning, "DATE NIGHT" SPOILERS FROM HERE

Steve tells Tina to count to three like she does at home to the kid. (After she angrily says “we’re 90 minutes away from my kids waking me up!” which was actually funny). Everyone looks at her weirdly as she counts, and when she hits “three”, the police helicopter appears behind her and they arrest everyone including the corrupt cops. They finally have dinner at a diner (it’s already light out), head home, have a realization that they love their life, then make out on the lawn in front of their house. Roll credits (including some funny ad-lib moments in the blooper reel).

i'm not an expert on Grooveshark, so take this with a pinch of salt

main thing is that Spotify is an application, not a website.
Layout is obviously different (similar to iTunes).
Don’t know about Grooveshark catalog, but Spotify’s is huge (like Norsk says, lots of indies, even Spanish obscure ones).
Spotify has several premium options, basic free one (the one I use) just plays 30 secs ads every 4-5 songs.

There is debate if iTunes has no streaming option because Jobs doesn’t like it, or the labels don’t want to declare “game over, you won”. Reportedly Google is also entering the music business, and the labels like that to have at least 3 options (with Amazon).

And I’m always watching MST3k… I’m getting the last few dozen episodes I’ve never seen.

EK did a quote from Repo Man the other day, so it got me in the mood to watch it, especially since I can’t remember when I last saw it. Definitely not as a wise and learneded adult.

He dribbles, turns around and then fires a shot from his chest with both arms while standing on his tippy toes, and snaps the wrist of his off hand instead of that of his shooting hand. Turrible.
Or he must have watched a lot of Shawn Marion and Kevin Martin. From “Lady Sovereign – Those Were The Days”

That's a big pet peeve of mine

When actors in a video/movie/TV show are supposed to be good at sports, or are just playing it, and they look like they’ve never played before.

Almost everyone in Major League, for example, had a horrible swing, and the kids in The Basketball Diaries weren’t believable as some of the best players in NYC.

The exec producer bruh!

Vincent Ward.

While in the United States, Ward wrote the story for Alien 3.3 He also developed the material that was the basis of The Last Samurai, selecting its director, and acting as executive producer on that project before writing and directing River Queen 4 starring Kiefer Sutherland and Samantha Morton.

EVERYBODY knows that. It’s why we Americans all consider The Last Samurai the definitive movie about the New Zealand experience.

An Australian ventriloquist visiting New Zealand walks into a small village and sees a local sitting on his porch patting his dog.

He figures he’ll have a little fun, so he says to the Kiwi:
“G’day, mind if I talk to your dog?”
Villager: “The dog doesn’t talk, you stupid Aussie.”
Ventriloquist: “Hello dog, how’s it going mate?”
Dog: “Yeah, doin’ all right.”
Kiwi: (look of extreme shock)
Ventriloquist: “Is this villager your owner?” (pointing at the villager)
Dog: “Yep”
Ventriloquist: “How does he treat you?”
Dog: “Yeah, real good. He walks me twice a day, feeds me great food
and takes me to the lake once a week to play.”
Kiwi: (look of utter disbelief)
Ventriloquist: “Mind if I talk to your horse?”
Kiwi: “Uh, the horse doesn’t talk either….I think.”
Ventriloquist: “Hey horse, how’s it going?”
Horse: “Cool”
Kiwi: (absolutely dumbfounded)
Ventriloquist: “Is this your owner?” (Pointing at the villager)
Horse: “Yep”
Ventriloquist: How does he treat you?
Horse: “Pretty good, thanks for asking. He rides me regularly, brushes me down often and
keeps me in the barn to protect me from the elements.”
Kiwi: (total look of amazement)

Animals are great for jokes.

A farmer goes out and buys a new, young rooster. As soon as he brings him home, the
young rooster rushes and screws all 150 of the farmers hens. The farmer is impressed.
At lunchtime, the young rooster again screws all 150 hens. The farmer is not just impressed anymore,he is worried. Next morning, not only is the rooster screwin…g the hens but he is screwing the turkeys, ducks even the cow.
Later farmer looks out into the barnyard and finds the rooster stretched out, limp as a rag, his eyes closed, dead and vultures circling overhead.
The farmer runs out, looks down at the young roosters limp body and says: “You deserved it, you horny bastard!”
And the young rooster opens one eye, points up at the vultures with his wing, and says, Shhhh!,they are about to land."

Yeah it does seem to work, the principle behind it is to pull out the part extending from the base to the scrotum that is normally inside your body. But for that, you have to cut open the skin at the base. Which then moves further up, so there is one scar in plain sight and another one at the base where it gets stitched close again. And it’s not like it doubles it, you just would gain an inch or two. If they also do injections I don’t know, maybe. It just seems like a bad idea, at least as bad as implants in the butt or the calves.

I have actually seen shows/read about it

Like you say, it only adds about an inch, and from what I’ve seen, it really is only for people with penises so small that they can’t get their partner pregnant. So, you do this surgery to help that.

And even after the surgery, ya often can’t achieve a full erection.

So, it ain’t a fun surgery.

I think the difference is

Dana Carvey is a funny performer in sketches and stuff, but not a funny writer or a idea man for movies.

Mike Myers can be hacky, but he thinks up the stuff for his movies and is a better writer, I’d say. He thought up all of his characters on SNL and all that, and Carvey was mainly a guy who acted out what the writers wrote.

It sure was awful the other day when Canzano “interviewed” our mayor.

What a total waste of everyone’s time. Canzano attacked Adams like a pit bull. He wouldn’t let him finish any sentences.

It could have been a good interview if he had engaged him in any kind of a conversation. It would have been good to know why Adams let Merritt Paulsen get away with remodeling PGE Park without making a complete contingency plan for baseball.

But it’s OK to move the baseball team if you own it and you don’t feel like building a stadium for it.

But Canzano was too preoccupied with shouting down Adams and couldn’t get to the money-shot question – one that needed to be asked. – Elgin

Also let the UK into the freaking basketball tournament in 2012 already.

The secretary general of FIBA, the governing body of international basketball, would like to see the NBA change its goaltending rules to allow players to knock the ball off the rim.

The official, Patrick Baumann, made the comment during a lunch meeting with eight selected American and European journalists Thursday before the final two quarterfinal games at the FIBA World Championship.

FIBA rules allow players to knock the ball off the rim after it touches the cylinder, whereas in the NBA that would constitute a goaltending violation.

Baumann also said the chances of Great Britain being awarded a spot in the 12-team field for the 2012 Olympics will be made next March during a meeting of the FIBA executive committee, but will be contingent in large part on the British Basketball Federation’s road map toward building the growth of the sport for the long term.

I hate FIBA rules in general though, and being that basketball is the most truly American sport, the world rules should be the American standard (college or NBA).

why doe he HAVE to go the rime to make you happy?

I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old

by The Arkitect on Sep 9, 2010 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions

It's less about a dislike about LMA

I don’t dislike him.

I just worry his inherent style isn’t the right fit.

The rebounding isn’t what I worry about, but the lack of aggressiveness on offense and defense PLUS how he NEEDS shots to be effective—and his method of scoring is inherently inefficient and doesn’t help anyone else on the team—makes me think he isn’t the right fit.

I’d be extremely happy if he grows and expands his game, but the guy we’ve seen the last few seasons, isn’t the right PF for us, I say.

But I don’t dislike LMA.

#52

by Mortimer on Sep 9, 2010 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it's in his mentality

He’s a hard worker, he’s gotten a lot stronger, but how he wants to play and his approach to the game isn’t alpha enough.

I won’t say he’s soft, as that is unfair, but he certainly isn’t a physical presence that other teams don’t like to play against. He makes things too easy for the other team on both ends of the court.

So… a more aggressive, role playing PF, who will play tough physical defense, and not be Joel Przybilla bad on offense, is what we need, I say. Since Oden, hopefully, should get every big man shot.

#52

by Mortimer on Sep 9, 2010 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions

okay

then I think we agree. I would like to see him get folks in foul trouble, on both ends.

by Name's Ash on Sep 9, 2010 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions

After the past season and awful playoff series

I’ve never been more sure that LMA is just the wrong fit— skilled player, but too much of a gray area player who needs to be a focal point but simply isn’t good enough to be a focal point for a great team.

Obviously, most of my thinking is in the hopes that Oden can keep himself healthy. Because if he does, then we have two A-level players in Roy and Oden… I’d like to see more role players around them, then another guy who NEEDS to score to be useful and also doesn’t score all that well.

#52

by Mortimer on Sep 9, 2010 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I actually think LMA makes more sense for you when Oden's healthy

and less sense when he’s not. Roy and Oden might be two A-level players, but I think that offense is a lot more potent with LMA in it. Oden’s efficient when he gets his own shot off but he’s not a very high-usage guy. I wouldn’t trust him to get it done on offense when he’s forced to create his own shot through a second defender that can sag off Varejao.

by sammy on Sep 9, 2010 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

He can still hit a shot (he = Andy)

And Oden has shown in that short stretch that he can handle the double team that always comes pretty well.

I also worry that LMA’s defensive intensity and effort go down all around when he doesn’t get shots or offensive focus. I feel we’ve seen that over the years (that’s for MadBlaze as well).

Verajao isn’t Joel Przybilla bad. He is great at moving off the ball and cutting towards the hoop, and Oden has shown he will hit those cutters.

#52

by Mortimer on Sep 9, 2010 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Anyone can hit a shot

The fact is, Andy V can do it with ANY regularity. He is a horrible outlet option and I simply do see him as the answer to our problems at all.

I’m willing to see how Oden and LA work together this season. If what you say is right we need to make a change but I’d like to give him a chance to be an efficient outlet guy next to a dominant centre before I give up on him.

by GiantBlazer on Sep 9, 2010 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

With a healthy Greg Oden, LMA makes even less sense.

Oden needs touches to up his usage if he’s at full speed, for otherwise Portland will be no better than above average in the Brandon Roy era.

by AK1984 on Sep 9, 2010 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Then give LA less and see how it goes

That is what happened at the start of this past season and it was a bit of a mess (LA even said he was having difficulty trying to adjust to that new role in an interview later in the year). Nevertheless, I’d like to see how he goes in a lower usage role where he is the outlet guy rather than the one who is posting up.

| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |

by MadBlaze on Sep 9, 2010 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess it's a question of whether Oden

can up his usage. There are a ton of low-usage/high-efficiency centers for a reason; it’s really hard to create space in the low-post. I think the team would benefit a lot by having a legit third option that can create his own shot and is a decent passer more than they would a defense/energy guy that can only score reliably on backdoor cuts and put backs.

by sammy on Sep 9, 2010 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Who are other low usage high efficiency centers?

And who else can score in iso and off garbage like Oden was showing?

Oden wasn’t the one preventing his usage from going up, and it was steadily rising during his stretch this last season… the offense needed to go through him more and utilize his passing and how he always has to be doubled.

He wasn’t THAT low usage.

I also don’t see a good high/low game developing between LMA and Oden since LMA isn’t a good enough passer— he’s a very careful passer and doesn’t turn it over much, but not a good passer.

My trust in LMA is low, and Oden will undoubtedly not be in great shape and will need some time to get to where he left off. I am fine with growing pains and LMA still getting shots during that time, but once Oden is back to where he left off, he needs pretty much every shot LMA was getting.

Oden was too good of an offensive player, at this extremely raw stage in his development, that it needs to be honed and refined as much as possible and ignore others who won’t have as high of a payoff as Oden’s offensive game will have eventually.

I fully expect this next season to start very awkwardly.

#52

by Mortimer on Sep 9, 2010 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree on LA not being a good passer

I think the potential is there with him and was beginning to show in his partnership with Camby at the end of last season.

by MadBlaze on Sep 9, 2010 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions

You (and AK) have obviously watched a ton more of Oden than I have so you’re probably right.

But lets look at this another way: If you traded Oden for Dwight Howard tomorrow, would you rather play Dwight with Varejao or with LMA? I think it’s relevant because Howard’s higher usage, has a better assist ratio and nearly as efficient on offense (his TS% is only brought down by his FT shooting).

by sammy on Sep 9, 2010 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Observing how Oden operates in the post would make you realise that the Howard-Oden comparison doesn't really work

Dwight is the best centre in the NBA but Oden is already displayed smoother post moves and a better ability to pass from double teams early last season.

Arrrgh

I had a reply that got deleted.

Basically, I think it’s a good question. Howard has shown he can cover for a weak defensive PF and still anchor an elite defense. Since he can do that, the need for an offensive PF seems more important.

I think Oden will be a great defensive center, but prolly won’t be able to cover like Howard can.

What I think you can do with Oden, but can’t do with Howard, is run an offense through him. Howard is just an end-point, so more offensively diverse players next to him helps. With Oden, you wanna run it through him and let him read and react and utilize his passing, so guys who will play off of him become more important to me, than someone who can live without Oden.

I don’t imagine LMA cutting without the ball and getting himself open and that sort of thing, like I picture Verajao doing it.

And I think Verajao’s cutting and off the ball game would be wasted with Dwight Howard, since he doesn’t pass like that. He just throws the ball back out to whoever he sees first (which LMA does as well).

It’s a good question. I think I wanna run offense through Oden more than I wanna run it through Howard, so I opt for the better defensive player and off-the-ball type player next to him.

#52

by Mortimer on Sep 9, 2010 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Nice answer.

I guess since I haven’t seen enough of Oden play, I’m more skeptical that you can do that. The numbers don’t hint at all that Oden has that Pau-like ability to see the whole floor and run an offense through the post. But if y’all are convinced that the numbers are totally obfuscating the truth, then, well, who am I to argue.

by sammy on Sep 9, 2010 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions

It's part of the frustration from early last season

We all felt the ball wasn’t going into Oden enough, and using him as a garbage man totally takes away his ability to pass and make decisions.

And then he was being totally ignored when wide open repeatedly by Roy and others… it’s something that I feel would go away with experience, but very frustrating.

#52

by Mortimer on Sep 9, 2010 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I would say the passing was less Pau-like

And more Shaq-like… able to hold off the double team and hold the ball away from the defender and make the right pass to the open man or cutter.

Not like Sabonis or something.

#52

by Mortimer on Sep 9, 2010 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Dwight has a very effective post game

What I would say the key and most difference between the two is, is Oden is a lot-lot better passer than Dwight.

Dwight is a helluva lot quicker and more athletic and he uses that physical dominance to be a very effective scorer. But since he isn’t exactly a good passer, having a series of shooters around him makes more sense, to me, than around a center who can hit the open man on the perimeter or cutters alike.

I also think guys like Rashard or Hedo, while flawed, are more versatile scorers than LMA is… they can drive a lil’, hit the 3, etc.

I think Rashard and Hedo made Dwight’s life easier, more than LMA will make Oden’s life easier… but like MB points out, we’ve barely been able to see that.

#52

by Mortimer on Sep 9, 2010 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Is Oden really that great a passer?

I realize that the respective systems they play in make it hard to make a direct comparison of assist ratios, but it’s hard for me to ignore that in 82 reg season games, Oden’s only racked up a 4.6 Ast%

by sammy on Sep 9, 2010 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

This would be a case where occasional flashes of brilliance

and seeing him make good decisions with the ball more often than not kind of out weigh the stats.

I’d agree that you would want to see that number rise before you can call him a great passer. Right now I am confident in saying that he sees the floor well and can be a great passer in the future if the offense runs through him more.

| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |

by MadBlaze on Sep 9, 2010 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I think we didn't utilize it hardly ever

But I think he’s a very good natural passer, and shows a natural ability to hold off the double team and survey the floor, finding open shooter on the other side of the court or hitting the cutter.

It won’t show up in his asst%, definitely. He wasn’t used enough.

#52

On the whole needs shots, needs to be a focal point thing

How do we know? Oden has never been there long enough to really tell how he fits with LA. They were just working it out early last season when Oden went down.

I still see the opportunity for a mutually beneficial partnership – one where Oden absorbs the double-teams and LA can feast on open jumpers instead of being given the ball one-on-one in the high post. Both have the distributing ability to become a dynamic high-low passing duo IMO.

I wanna give it one more season, unless Al Horford becomes available.

I seriously doubt we'll trade LMA

I think another season will be given no matter what.

But I do believe the warning signs are there, and LMA’s playing style has to grow and change to fit what we need… since he isn’t that sort of player who is so good we make everyone else fit him.

#52

by Mortimer on Sep 9, 2010 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely

My main reason for wanting to keep LA is how great a jumpshooter I think he has been when open (this is based on observation, I’m sure there are stats out there but I can’t find them atm) rather than in iso situations in the post, where he is far too liable to take contested, fadeaway jumpers.

If there is any truth to the story about LA trying to improve his driving game (which I think could reap rewards due to his above average quickness for a big) the there is a chance he could be more efficient when given touches in the post but also be a more efficient jumpshooter because of the types of looks he could get next to Greg.

Defensively it’s all up to him, because he has the tools. Its just an attitude and commitment thing in that regard. I’m cautiously optimistic, partly based on what I have seen from him and partly due to the fact I think he is frustrated enough with his lack of progress to do something different this season.

http://espn.go.com/blog/pac10/post/_/id/12745/washington-loses-punter-to-injury

Washington’s senior punter Will Mahan, who averaged 40.6 yards last year, suffered a knee injury in practice Tuesday and will be out for the season.

Mahan tore both his ACL and MCL when his knee got rolled during a drill.

The punting job now falls to walk-on Kiel Rasp, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound junior who has never punted in a game.

“He’s got a great leg. He’s been terrific all training camp,” coach Steve Sarkisian told the Seattle Times. “The key is, you’ve just got to go into a game and catch the ball and punt it, which he hasn’t had to do. Sooner or later, we all have to experience (performing under pressure). He’s given us all the confidence he can do that.”

Punter/kicker injuries are the worst

There’s no contingency plan, and you can’t just pick up a decent FA like the NFL.
BSU has the same guy punting and kicking, if he went down we’d be in a world of hurt

And Brotzman is a passable punter at best

He’s an okay kicker although not really an NFL prospect.

He's not as good as Serna was for OSU

And Serna didn’t make it.

Making it as a kicker in the NFL is about the hardest position to break in since each team only carries one.

SHOWER DISCIPLINE IN TENNESSEE!

http://blogs.knoxnews.com/ward/2010/09/dooley-quoted-hitting-the-showers.html

Obviously, it’s one Derek Dooley expected Tennessee to already have a handle on when he arrived.

But a staph infection for defensive tackle Minor Bowens among others prompted an impromptu lesson on cleanliness for the Vols on Tuesday, and despite the laughter Dooley produced after practice Wednesday, it wasn’t all a joking matter.

“We’ve had a few staph infections, so we did a clinic yesterday on proper shower technique and soap and using a rag,” Dooley said. "We put some new rags in — y’all think I’m kidding, but I’m serious.

“We had, I told them, the worst shower discipline of any team I’ve ever been around. So we talked a little bit about application of soap to the rag and making sure you hit all your body. You know, you can neglect it trying to cut corners, and it shows in how you practice and elsewhere. I’m hoping we show some improvement in that.”

Artest is going to sell his ring for charity

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Ron-Artest-s-championship-ring-is-for-sale-inqu?urn=nba-268518

The fact that Ron Artest(notes) is promoting mental health in schools today is amazing in its own right. Considering Artest went from throwing medicine in the garbage to being a government-approved mental health spokesman in a matter of years, he knows as well as anybody the effectiveness of seeking out help. If that were the end of Artest’s foray in to mental health awareness, that would be more than enough.

But since this is the first paragraph of a blog post, that’s not the end of the story. And really, since it’s Ron Artest, there should be no surprise that there’s more. Here’s the latest development, which just might be more surprising than Artest’s school speaking adventure. From NBA.com’s Scott Howard-Cooper:

Artest finally won a title in June after 11 regular seasons of trying … and now he’s planning to sell the championship ring as a fundraiser to put more psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists in schools.

“I’m never going to put it on,” he said.

Artest plans to soon announce details of what he hopes will become a worldwide auction, and he takes possession of the jewelry in an Oct. 26 pre-game ceremony before the Lakers open against the Rockets. It’s an incredible gesture. But it’s even more meaningful as a statement.

“You work so hard to get a ring, and now you have a chance to help more people than just yourself, instead of just satisfying yourself,” he said. “What’s better than that? For me, this is very important.”

Joe Montana vs. Rudy

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Joe-Montana-scores-another-touchdown-for-reality?urn=ncaaf-268408

Hall of Famer Joe Montana, then a lowly freshman lingering somewhere on the depth chart, doesn’t remember it quite as harshly. But as he told radio host Dan Patrick on Wednesday, he certainly doesn’t remember any uplifting strings swelling in the rafters, either:

DP: Were you there when Rudy was there?

JM: Yeah. It’s a movie, remember. Not all of that is true.

    DP: What wasn’t true?

JM: Well, the crowd wasn’t chanting. No one threw in their jerseys. He did get in the game. He got carried off [at the end of] the game. […] Back then they tried to play someone at the end of [the season] that all the seniors could get in the last home game. The schedule was kind of set that way.

So he got in. He did get a sack. And then the guys carried him off, just playing around. I won’t say it was a joke, but it was playing around. He worked his butt off to get where he was and to do the things he did. But not any harder than anyone else

The tough part about global warming is that it's a real, tangible thing, but it's hard to measure how ...

much of the impact is natural — as weather is cyclical — and how much of the impact is man-made. It’s like the nature v. nurture debate, except more volatile.

Oh, and in my view, I believe we’re screwed as a species going forward no matter what — even if we put in a lot of much-needed work regarding conservationism, environmentalism, et cetera — as the human race is dangerously overpopulated and lacking sustainability in its current state due to a combination of our ecological footprint and the Earth’s climate cycles.

MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION

Global warming is real and widely agreed upon, but proving causation is currently problematic… No doubt our species plays a role, but how big that role is depends largely on how much of the current warming is due to the natural warming cycle the Earth is in due to coming out of an ice age. Which is something Science doesn’t have a good handle on right now. END OF MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION

There are some pretty interesting studies, cases of how species are wiped out in a given area. You’re right that life will continue on earth but you can make some pretty interesting claims about the specification of the life forms residing on a planet we basically destroy. Many other species will bite the dust, too, but the Earth itself will make it through.

Yet, no matter whether or not there’s an upcoming mass extinction, I think the human race is soon due for a gargantuan population decrease either way.

AK, we here at the JD, need you, for the sake of prosperity, to begin protecting us, by protecting our water supply. We need you to become General Jack from Dr Stangelove. If you have to, channel this mantra:

have you ever seen a Commie drink a glass of water?

E.O Wilson is the father of sociobiology.

My undergrad focus.

My professors who had worked with him said he was a brilliant jerk.

But he is very similar to me. We both read so much as children that we had horrible nearsightedness. We could both take off our glasses and our eyes would act like powerful magnifying glasses which we both used to study the social actions of ants.

He just decided to write scientific papers about it while I just read them.

I took a class in college which should have been called “Prof. Boyd hates on E.O. Wilson for 50 minutes twice a week 101.”

Nice.

I’ve never actually met anyone who knows him that liked him as a person. I very much enjoy his books though.

My professor was a bit more diplomatic though…

My prof wasn’t so much hating on E.O. Wilson the person as on the entire field of sociobiology. I enjoyed reading “On Human Nature” and also “The Triumph of Sociobiology” but Prof. Boyd succeeded in making me very skeptical of many sociobiological arguments.

the average life expectancy for a mammal species is about 2 million years

Humans have been around for 2 or 3 million,I see no reason the human race should expect to be immune to normal biological process

We smarter!

I fully believe we will likely mess up the planet and everything big time, because humans suck, but I also believe our brains and resourcefulness and ability to adapt to our surroundings will enable the human race to survive, as a species, through a lot.

Some will survive, but at a substantial loss by 2100. That's if all goes well, too.

Sans something catastrophic like a devastating solar flare superstorm, pole shift, supervolcanic eruption, or some other cataclysm in the next few years, the human race should reach its peak population around 2050 — while topping out at about 9,000,000,000 — and decline steadily soon thereafter.
