where have all our whipping boys gone?
with Outlaw, Webster, (likely Rudy) and Blake all being traded it seems that Jerryd Bayless may be poised for the whipping of his life. Where else are fans going to be able to misdirect their frustration? I think this is a make or brake year for Bayless. He is either going to rise as our point guard of the future or fall to the goat of all goats. Bayless will likely see the minutes he has so desperately craved over the last two seasons. I see him around 20 min a game and am very excited to see how it turns out. But with all the other whipping boys gone, Jerryd is going to be under more scrutiny than any other blazer over the last few seasons. We used to be able to spread it out: yeah Outlaw needs more minutes bench Martel! Marty' the man Trade Outlaw! Gett Rudy in there Blakes blowing it! Its all now going to fall on Bayless. I for one think that the dude is ready to show us what he's got. I know he will be working on that jump shot and there is no doubt he is in the gym, so I think its going to be fine. but if he falters, there is going to be a loud cry for his head. So here is the question: pass or fail? POF or Goat? Besides greg's health I think this is the story of the season this year and I am looking forward to Bayless feeding some people their hats! chime in!

I would too
But I don’t think it’s possible. It’s human nature to find someone to nit pick at. Ask my mom.
Where have you been? LMA has already inherited the title.

Yeah, unless he rips out Lamar Odom's neck veins with his teeth, he's going to be labeled soft, and disappointing. So it is written.
and here I thought it was Andre Miller
I guess it all depends on your perspective

Andre's the wrong fit with Roy, we need a PGotF immediately
or so I’ve been told
I guess it’s “indirect” whipping on Miller. People aren’t so much mad about what Andre does, just that he’s still here and should be replaced asap so “the future backcourt” will be less vague

At the beginning of last year...
Roy was more comfortable with Blake than he was with Miller. I think Roy and Miller are both kind of used to being “the guy” to an extent. It was probably uncomfortable more than anything getting used to each other. As the year progressed, I think it started working better.
But if Miller makes Roy feel a little uncomfortable, a lot of other players really benefit from Miller. I don’t think it’s so much that we hate Miller. It’s just tough to see any player you like get criticized. I think Blake and Rudy, players I both like, have gotten a lot more flak than Miller so far. From what I’ve read, most of BE thinks Miller is a large reason we escaped with 50 wins last season.
Bayless probably gets a lot more criticism than Miller right now.

I think most fans respect Andre’s game, but like I said the anticipation is that he’s not going to be around when the team is ready to win it all. So there’s a certain urgency to move him along and resolve the PG issue. This leads to trade proposals and “he doesn’t fit with Roy” responses. Brandon doesn’t have any problem playing next to Miller; the two of them can be devastating when they post up smaller guards. What happened last fall with Blake is such old news, what happened in March-April before Roy hurt his knee is what I want to see more of.
I think the CP3 rumors started the PGotF ball rolling again…but at the end of the summer Dre is still a Blazer, and he’s not a bad PG to have on a playoff roster

Bayless supporters
were just as vocal in whipping other players. Claiming that one’s favorite is the whipping boy of others is a favorite, and ultimately successful, assertion…successful because everybody feels their guy is whipped at some point and every guy is.

I’m pretty sure there is no “brake” in Jerryd’s game, or personality

Saw that too...

Wile E. Coyote… Kind of an apt metaphor for Jerryd’s game, if you ask me…

To be honest,
I’d think the Roadrunner would be a more apt description. Really really fast with almost no in-between game. Drive right for the foul and layup or pull-up for the long J. 100% or survey.
Wile E. Coyote is completely incompetent. Even if you don’t like Bayless’ game you can’t call him completely incompetent.
Republicans are liars, Democrats are hypocrites, they are both bought and paid for by corporations. Grrr.

Ah, don't forget the episode where he caught the RR!
Wile E. is a brilliant scientist, who just can’t finish well… Although JayBay does strut around like the RR, sticking his tongue out… bleep bleeping (at the ref)… Hmm… one of those two certainly work…
Haha

I almost sprayed my laptop with a mouthful of coffee from laughing. Funny because it’s so true.
Apart from Bayless, you can add Babbitt and Cunningham to that list of possible whipping boys – guys whom we overrate that we believe should deliver more with the limited minutes they’ll be given.
You forgot about Dre
People will surely enjoy whipping him too. Particularly if their name starts with Tom in Hawaii.

tih will whip Andre
for showing up to play, not showing up to play. Cutting his hair, not cutting his hair. Passing the ball, not passing the ball. Shooting the ball, not shooting the ball. Flying through the air with a tomahawk jam, not flying through the air with a tomahawk jam. Going for 52 and winning the game or not going for 52 and winning the game.
According to tih, Andre should be flipping burgers.
Personally, I think Andre is a top 8 pg in the league when you take into account his BBIQ, experience and professionalism. He is also the right guy to mentor our young pg’s.
and seriously...
You don’t think Bayless could benefit from:
- seeing how a change in pace on a drive can get the defender off balance?
- snaring a D reb and coming down in fast break mode?
- posting up a weaker defender, and get either a layup or a pass out of the double?
- learning how to make a post entry pass, from the top or side?
- knowing how to use a pick, and hit the roller?
I could go on, but seriously, tih, I know from experience, if you’re going to bash, at least have some solid footing to stand on… tih will be renamed trollinhawaii if you don’t let up a little…
Whatever
Andre Miller is a lot like Brett Favre and it’s been well documented that he didn’t do crap for Aaron Rodgers.
I’m sick and tired of fan bending reality to fit their agendas.
One minute a player isn’t going to develop if he doesn’t get playing time. This argument was was used all the time with Blake. The Sergio and Bayless fans bashed Blake for taking their playing time. NO ONE thought they could learn from watching Blake play.
So now that it’s Miller taking the the playing time it’s good for the guys who aren’t playing? What a crock.
Miller isn’t a leader and he’s not a mentor. Having Bayless learn from a player with a mercenary mentality is a bad thing. Even though I say Bayless will not learn jack from Miller.
I could go on but it’s not worth it. I’ve made only a handful Miller comments in last month. Check yourself before you wreck yourself.

seriously...
You don’t think Bayless has seen all of those things numerous times from watching game tape, sitting courtside most of his rookie season and a good part of his sophmore year?
I’m over all of this learn by osmosis stuff – Players learn by practicing and putting their skills to the test in game situations. Other players have little to do with this unless they are active in imparting their knowledge on younger players and take on a teaching role. Andre, being an admittedly introverted person who like to keep his personal and professional lives separate, doesn’t strike me as the guy who would foster close relationships with the younger guys and be a ‘mentor’ type.

If the young player wants to sit next to Miller in the video room while Andre goes over the upcoming opponents, he just might learn something. I’m not saying that ’Dre is going to do a powerpoint demonstration with a lazer pointer, but tribal knowledge can be passed along if the youngster is quiet and pays attention
And coaches that Miller has played for mention how vocal he is on the floor, telling his teammates what plays are coming and how the defense should be set. Camby is the same way, the joke with Marcus is that he knows the opponents plays better than the opposing players
Once the game/practice is over these family guys go their own way. But to say they aren’t professionals when they’re on the clock is a stretch

I think..
even if he has an all-star season its a little early to be calling him the Greatest Of All Time.
Probably Rudy, if he's still with us.
At least currently I can’t imagine anyone else on the team who might get that tag. Then again, i think he’s gone before the deadline, but that’s another thread ;)

I hated Bayless
But i’ve turned around. This is the make-or-break year in the sense that, is he on Brandon Roy’s team? Or is he just a player, performance aside, plugging into the system? Although we’re a better team now, I loved seeing Roy, Jarrett Jack, and Travis Outlaw play together.
M, period. Fresh, comma.
Luke Babbitt ?
Underwhelming at summer league – has a good starting position in the race for future whipping boy. Coach Mac is the big money bet if the team performs poorly.

LMA will be a perennial whipping boy
JBay has a very good shot at becoming one, the only way I see this not happening is if he actually somehow has great court vision and becomes a better distributor.
Babbitt is primed to become one but we’ll see.
I’ll throw in my darkhorse candidate: Wesley Matthews, I think many will expect more from him than he’s actually able to give.
I think LA will actually get less this year...
After all the horrible contracts handed out this summer I have nothing but love for him. He might be over paid, but in comparison to others he’s a pretty good deal. I think his 18 and 8 is enough from him.

Wes is actually my top-pick
It’s already all his fault that we traded Webster and therefore have no mid-level contracts to make salaries work in a trade for an All-Star. Have you tried to run a trade for a big name player through the trade machine? You can’t do it without giving up Dre AND Pryz. If we still had Webster, we could have kept one of them. Now, unless we get a good PF/C and an elite PG IN THE SAME TRADE, there are no big trades we can make that will actually improve the roster until Matthew’s contract becomes movable in Dec.
Phase 1: Collect underpants
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!

Not this coming Feb. But Matthews’s contract will be mid-level next season (depending on the new CBA, etc) If he improves, the Blazers probably won’t flip him. But if he plateaus or doesn’t fit in, Wesley’s contract will be fungible beginning in 2011-2012

LMA and Miller for Tony Parker and DeJuan Blair
Not ready yet, but once Greg and Joel are healthy, Camby could start at PF
We’ll see how this hypothetical scenario plays out in Jan-Feb

Aside from the fact I wouldn't consider that deal with LMA involved,
do you think Parker would agree to do an extension and trade deal? Otherwise, Parker walks at the end of the season. If so, I might do the deal with Joel and Miller (depending on how well Joel and Parker are playing by Feb).

Please, not DeJuan Blair again...
You know our crack training staff would’ve made him miss the entire season, last year, right?
Seriously, I think I’m going to petition Dave to ban all posts that contain the names DeJuan Blair, Travis Outlaw and Steve Blake… and maybe CP3, Kobe, and KP for good measure..
course, then this post would be banned… hmm…
I’ll keep noodlin’ on this…
then add Kirk Hinrich
Luckily Darren Collison has been removed by events outside our control.

Not Babbit,
but otherwise, I think you’ve got the top 3 named here. LMA (possible underachievement), Rex (not actually a PG), Wesley (big money, low production), these are the whines w/ the highest possibility. I’d mention Greg, but….

The unofficial tally so far...
I count the following votes for whipping boy, pretty much ether making the OP’s case (who’s it gonna be??) or disproving it (oh don’t worry, we’ll find at least one…)
hoodieNation 2 (but 1 for from his own vote, so that probly shudn’t count)
LMA – 2
Dre – 3
TomInHawaii – I lost count
Nate 1 – another new convert to the Fire Nate Fast diet!
Rudy – 2
Luke Babbitt – 2 (LOL, tough town…)
Mr Bayless – 1
Wes Matthews – 2 (REALLY tough town…)
Looks like it's tih
I’ll bring the whip if I get first crack.
I think Jarett Jack
Should get All Whipping Boy honors. That guy took a whooping by fans!
Sometimes I feel like I'm going in different directions...
