Junk 9-5

I bought Madden11 the other day...I have been playing it (against the AI) and it has been pretty fun. However ...something weird came up yesterday. I ended up going to overtime....and Collingsworth started explaining the new overtime rules for the NFL (both teams get a possession)....but when you actually get to OT....it works the same ol way ....sudden death. Has anyone else experienced this? My console is a PS3....maybe Xbox is different. Anyhow....just wondered.

I never really liked "Make my day" that much.

But those 2 are great. And so is "nothin’ like a good piece of hickory" (in context of course)

I also liked "Your mouthwash ain’t makin’ it.
But it was set up well with him trying to interrupt his chief while the chief is berating him for some 5 minutes or so.
finally Clint gets a word in edgewise and says "Can I say something"
Chief says "Sure, go ahead"
Clint "Your mouthwash ain’t makin it"

I don't care about that, although taking it out of context does make it a very amusing remark.

My qualm is with the guy calling me out for something that’s completely off base — for I often use qualifiers in my comments, with “almost” being the one that I used in his supposed example of me being too inflexible in the way I express myself — and, moreover, I’m further agitated by how he doesn’t acknowledge he’s just as pushy as me in the way we each present ourselves.

As the ol’ adage goes, it’s a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black.

It was pretty good.

Me and my mom went earlier in the day on Friday and as I was setting up my tent, I see there are no poles for it. How they would be missing is beyond me, but luckily my dad hadn’t left work yet so we called him to buy a new one. In the meantime, we popped an air mattress and realized we forgot some other stuff. He had to buy all that crap and didn’t get there until 8:30 so I had to set up my damn tent in the dark.

THEN, at 2 AM, some dude a few campsites away started yelling at the top of his lungs at his wife or someone. 20 f-words later and after the entire park was awake, he finally left.

That’s about all the excitement there was. I feel like hell today.

Survival of the fittest in outdoor conditions hasn't really occured for what?

2000 years?

I’m sure we could swerve right back to thriving outdoors as a species, but it would require a great cull to start, not due to experience, but due to a lack of strength, body temperature control, instinctual reading of the weather, and even things like sexual selection.

Of course most theories point to homo beginnings on the edge of forest & plain, sleeping under the stars or up in trees, so from where man began, he can return.

Nah, it's no big deal.

To be honest, I did laugh off your Nazi analogy and wasn’t really outraged by it.

And yeah, I understand how countless people can care deeply about highly intelligent animals like dolphins. I guess that, well, there’s bigger fish to fry — or mammals, as is the case here — in my opinion.

by AK1984 on Sep 5, 2010 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it also depends on whether you value a human life more highly than that of an intelligent animal such as a dolphin, whale, elephant or chimp

Or if you make the distinction between human life and animal life at all.

I’m not that extreme but I do think killing a pod of dolphins is somewhat comparable to killing a family – we only care more because human death creates more of an emotional response.

Heck, I can’t blame the Germans for sinking the Lusitania due to it carrying military cargo for the British. I kind of hope that Nicolas Batum's lackluster performance stops people from wrongly ...

comparing him to the legendary Scottie Pippen. Batum, moreover, isn’t in Andre Iguodala’s league, either.

by AK1984 on Sep 5, 2010 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

At Nic’s age, Scottie was “tearing it up” at Central Arkansas. Nic is closer to Scottie than Scottie was at 21.

Circular reasoning.

by idoltime on Sep 5, 2010 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not arguing for Nic but against Scottie
Its highly unlikely that Batum Scottie would have made makes the necessary improvements in help defense, post defense, shot blocking, pick-pocketing, distribution or physical bulk to be considered anywhere near the player Pippen washe became

The only argument is circular. He is the exception that proves his own specialness. But he didn’t have any of that at Nic’s age.

Is life not a hundred times too short for us to stifle ourselves?

Ignoring data is worse.

My only point is that your opinion on what Nic can or can’t be is as useless to me as it would have been if you were predicting what Pippen would have become. You would have gotten it wrong. So did just about everyone. But since we couldn’t pick the “first Pippen” why would an opinion on the “second Pippen” hold water?

Is life not a hundred times too short for us to stifle ourselves?

by idoltime on Sep 5, 2010 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

I consider age less relevant than NBA experience

Players become set in their roles early in their NBA careers whatever their age. Very earlier in his career, Pippen showed he had the potential to be a point forward, which is reflected in his high assist percentage even in his second year. Iggy also had a far higher assist percentage in his second year.

You could say that Batum had the best second year of any of them but even saying this there were indications that Pippen and Iggy would become different players than Batum stylistically.

Well, players change their roles also. Especially when they change coaches.

And Scottie immediately had a clear and obvious role to play next to Jordan and quickly got the perfect coach to work with him. But it’s highly likely that Nic is not a point forward in the making.

Is life not a hundred times too short for us to stifle ourselves?

by idoltime on Sep 5, 2010 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

And I'm fine with that

I love his off-ball awareness, he seems to always know where to cut for a good pass and finish. I think he and Andre/Roy will develop good chemistry resulting in a lot more alley-oops, like we were hoping for Rudy going in to last year. Plus, his shooting should get better now that he doesn’t have a bum shoulder

z

by momomoses7 on Sep 5, 2010 4:24 PM PDT up reply actions

All of this is great and its why I'm happy to have Nic

I just think it is fairly certain looking at his skills and style of play that he will never be that superstar second guy Pippen was or even a damn good one like Iggy would be here. He is likely more of a fill-in-the-blanks guy on offense and a man-to-man defensive specialist in my opinion.

Yeah, it was pretty certain that Pippen couldn't be a legit enough number 2 for MJ

Until he suddenly was. Coaching had more to do with that at first than anything Pippen & MJ could have done by himself.

Is life not a hundred times too short for us to stifle ourselves?

by idoltime on Sep 5, 2010 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree

The stats from Pippens early career, especially the defensive metrics and aforementioned assist numbers, indicated he was going to be a unique player. Sure he needed the opportunity and to have faith shown in him by the coaching staff but I still say Pippen was clearly going to be a special player and this was obvious by his 3rd year in the league.

Even with Doug Collins as head coach, Scottie ...

Pippen posted an AST% that was way higher than Nicolas Batum. Pippen had a higher STL%, too, and was just an altogether more physically imposing and aggressive player.

z

by momomoses7 on Sep 5, 2010 4:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, Scottie Pippen could front guys like ...

Charles Barkley with relative ease. Even as a rookie — which is when that YouTube video is from — it’s clear as day to me that Pippen was just in a different league than Nicolas Batum.

From watching Batum, I feel pretty safe is dismissing the claims some folks have of him possibly being a point forward. Batum possesses decent handles, sure. Yet, that notwithstanding, he’s a poor distributor — which makes him the polar opposite of Rudy Fernandez — and isn’t someone who you’d rely on to run an offense.

The biggest difference between Pippen and Batum, though, is regarding aggressiveness on defense, which is where Pippen brightly outshines the Frenchman.

by AK1984 on Sep 5, 2010 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Wasn't Pippen 22 at the start of his rookie year?

Drew, however, is an outlier, albeit one of the negative variety. For whatever reason, people mostly use positive outliers when they make ill-fitting comparisons (e.g., Luke Ridnour to Steve Nash back in the day, Jerryd Bayless to Chauncey Billups recently, et cetera).

I'm predicting a somewhat disappointing season from Nic

Always seems to happen when expectations are excessive. He is unlikely to be as efficient so his PER will likely regress slightly while his improvements could be more on the defensive end, particularly in terms of help defense and cutting down his fouls, which won’t be as noticeable to the average fan due to the lack of a neat, although flawed, stat like PER for that end of the floor.

Yeah, dealing with the LMA conundrum -- which you seemingly alluded to ...

up there — is a more pressing priority than anything to do with Nicolas Batum, who’s of value in spite of the fact that he’s highly, highly unlikely to meet some people’s excessively lofty expectations of him.

by AK1984 on Sep 5, 2010 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Do you have any ideas on said LMA conundrum that would be palatable to both teams?

I liked the LMA for Horford talk the other night but doubt the Hawks will do it as Horford plays the 5 there and LMA doesn’t seem to enjoy guarding centers.

z

by momomoses7 on Sep 5, 2010 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, that doesn't make sense from the Atlanta Hawks standpoint.

Realistically, Portland will likely have to go with what it’s got in LMA this season. That’s the setup, for better or worse.

by AK1984 on Sep 5, 2010 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

The good news

Is that the 2010 spending spree made LMAs contract look a lot better in relation to similar bigs. Hopefully that means once he’s no longer BYC (and assuming the new CBA doesn’t totally eradicate the current landscape) he’ll be fairly desirable

z

by momomoses7 on Sep 5, 2010 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions

The best two options are pretty obvious to me

The most unlikely is also the one we should all hope for – LA accepts a lesser role this season, plays closer to the basket and thus becomes more efficient, commits to being a help-defense specialist in the Camby-mold and is everything we hoped he could be. I’m pretty sure this isn’t happening but the Josh Smith transformation gives me a glimmer of hope.

The more likely option is that LA continues to the second option of offense, improves offensively and on the board to the point that he is a near 20-10 guy. Makes the all star team and all that jazz but doesn’t make the improvements necessary for him to fit with Roy and Oden. Then, Cho realises this and gets value for him in the form or someone like Horford or a star at another position.

Having written it out, neither is likely but for the sake of the Blazers I sure hope one of those scenario’s plays out in 10-11.

I know Pete Carroll isn’t fond of traditional fullbacks, but the Seattle Seahawks could use someone such as the veteran Richardson for short-yardage blocking purposes in lieu of the undersized Quinton Ganther. Nah, football is good times.

With the Seattle Seahawks, I’m not that fond of using a zone blocking scheme with the offensive line — although it does benefit undersized guards like Ben Hamilton and Max Unger — as well as would prefer a more traditional man blocking scheme, power running game, et cetera. Regarding the power running game, it’s tough when the team employs two scatbacks (i.e., Justin Forsett & Leon Washington), a 5’9" guy converted from full-time tailback to a dual tailback/fullback, and a special teams standout in Michael Robinson. To me, the ’hawks would benefit mightily from having a traditional fullback, Tony Richardson, who could be used as a lead blocker in short-yardage situations. For Seahawk fans, Richardson would harken back to the days of Mack Strong.

I wouldn’t doubt it if Hasselback’s on borrowed time already.

If they keep overlooking Forsett when he’s wide open in the flat it’s only going to make it harder.

Before the Cleveland Browns signed Jake Delhomme, I thought for sure that Matt ...

Hasselbeck would be traded there along with Seneca Wallace. I also thought that the Seattle Seahawks should’ve signed Derek Anderson, never dealt for Charlie Whitehurst, and should’ve kept the 40th pick — which it dealt to San Diego for Chuck — so as to draft Jimmy Clausen with it. So yeah, I never did expect a quarterback duo of Hasselbeck and Whitehurst. I hope the best for Whitehurst, though.

Hasselbeck used to drive me crazy.

EVERY SINGLE TIME he got mad or upset in anyway he would throw an interception right after that. It didn’t matter for what reason he was upset…mad at the ref, mad at himself. It was like clockwork, you could have made money in Vegas on it.
He had that good year, and seems to be able to keep it under control now.

On an additional note, I see that the Seahawks traded for big ol' Stacy Andrews -- who'll ...

most likely get the start as a fill-in at left tackle for a couple of weeks, while then battling it out at right tackle with Sean Locklear once Russell Okung returns from his high ankle sprain — also, with regards to the offensive line, it looks like Mike Gibson has usurped the washed-up Ben Hamilton at left guard due to how things played out against Oakland this past week.

Charlie Whitehurst is a bit wild, though, which scares me. Yet, he's undoubtedly ...

more gifted from an athleticism and arm strength standpoint than an oft-injured, over-the-hill has-been in Matt Hasselbeck; thus, I’m ready to go in a new direction at QB.

by AK1984 on Sep 6, 2010 3:16 AM PDT up reply actions

When Whitehurst is on, he’s on, but holy cow those high passes

were insanely high. All in all I think he’s doing a little better than what I anticipated. One thing I have a hard time with is when the QB rolls out and there’s nothing there, you don’t take the 3-yard loss. For goodness sake, just chuck the ball out of bounds. I don’t care if it is only 3 yards. He has a better pedigree than that, with Norv Turner being the most recent part of that pedigree.

From a Philly fan I say good luck with mcnabb

He is very much a roller coaster, he will make some amazing plays but he will also throw a ton of passes at the receivers feet.

One great this about mcnabb is he doesnt need great wrs

The only year he had decent or good wrs was when TO was there and last season. He spreads the ball so much that having a big time receiver isn’t necessary. So u will love him in that regard

Ducks putting up the numers. 72-0

best since they beat Nevada in1999, 72-10

OSU gives it away on basically 2 plays.
I don’t know why anybody ever punts it to the returner with time running out.
Kick it out of bounds man. Sure you might give up 5 or 10 yards, but he’s not going to return it 40 yards.

I think I read somewhere he no longer practices at qb

And is almost excessively a wr/rb because freshman qb Brian Bennett has taken a strangle hold on the 3rd qb spot. The only reason hawkins was playing qb yesterday is because they don’t want to burn bennetts redshirt unless they have to. He will be a great asset for trip play and just overall playmaking in chips offense.

by HD on Sep 5, 2010 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow – no reason to burn a redshirt on New Mexico.

Usually when a guy takes over at that point in the game the play looks pathetic.
He made it look like he could vie for the #2 spot at QB. However, Costa did look calm and poised in there.
Hawkins looks like he’ll make a great receiver. I see a lot of broken tackles coming our way this year.

I was so terrified when I woke up this morning, the pit had collapsed a little and the dirt seal that we made lastnight had cracked.

There were wisps of steam or smoke coming through the cracks and the earth was blackened there. I was nervous that the holes were large enough to let oxygen get back to the embers and planks, which would just burn up the pig.

Plus lastnight, I drank more whiskey than I have since I was in the fourth grade(jk). So, this morning I was waaaaay hung over, and hyper-sensitive to smells and the smell coming out of the ground was more like smoky burlap and less like pork.

Turns out, I didn’t have anything to worry about. The bones just literally fell out of the thing, and the meat was done perfectly, with perfect Kahlua pig flavor.

I am freaking exhausted though, I got about four and a half hours sleep lastnight, and was feeling rough for the first couple hours this morning.

I also don’t like 1-tech Colin Cole, who I wanted to see cut; subsequently, Brandon Mebane could’ve been moved over from the 3-tech to the 1-tech — as he’s way more suited to be a nose tackle rather than an under tackle — while Kentwan Balmer got an extended look at the 3-tech and, moreover, newly acquired 1-tech Junior Siavii and yeoman 3-tech Craig Terrill stick around for depth in the defensive line rotation.

According to the profile I’ve read he was a #10 pick of the Lions, and a bust for 2 seasons. Then a bust with the Raiders. Then in Tennessee. And now back on the west coast.

They're convinced everyone is underrating him.

On the other hand, very few people are convinced they’re underrating the Seahawks.

They're supposed to have a fairly weak schedule

So even now, 8 wins isn’t outside of the realm of possibility. Getting more remote though. I have a relative who is convinced they’re playoff bound. But that was last week…

I don’t see any specific over/under though on a couple betting sites.

by Timmay! on Sep 5, 2010 11:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Mike Williams has looked good so far this fall, though, and he'll make a fine split end.

I, too, would like to see the Seattle Seahawks finally cut ties with Deion Branch and have Golden Tate as the starting flanker — while Deon Butler is the slot receiver and special teams guru Ben Obomanu comes in during four wideout sets — because a full-on youth movement is in order.

Is digital terrestrial television a viable alternative to cable in the US? How many quality programs would you get?

I like that now a simple USB stick for $30 is enough to get good TV on the computer or a simple set-top box on TV set, though the offering isn’t amazing.

I think I would get about 30 programs. Of those 10 are national or regional ones that I really use regularly, and about 5 more are decent though I would have to look in the TV Guide to see what I want to watch. 5 are complete junk like home-shopping and extremely useless niche TV (and that niche isn’t sports). The other 9 or 10 are “meh, I don’t need it”.

It’s what I had 5 years ago via (analogue) cable, but now I’ve gotten used to a larger offering :-(
And they have it structured in such a way that I can’t get rid of the program my digital cable provider offers, and what my pay tv provider offers in additional programs. Grrr. Digital satellite would get me what I want from just the pay tv provider, but that is not a real option at the moment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taipei_101

The second one is a black rhino on a conservancy here http://www.lewa.org
They have about 10% of Kenya’s population (down from 20000 to under 300 and back up to 600. A little over 3500 in total. They are rare and amazing). Unfortunately 2 got poached last winter. It’s an amazing place with different vegetation from swamps to high savannas with high mountains in the distance, and sometimes it looks like Noah’s ark just landed and got unloaded. You can hold your camera anywhere and have 10 different animals in the picture, which is completely unlike most of the country because it’s a managed and fairly protected environment.
