Rating Nicolas Batum In France vs. Turkey at FIBA World Championships

Vote and discuss Nicolas Batum's performance in today's FIBA World Championships game between France and Turkey.

It was a disappointing and frustrating end to the FIBA tournament for France who struggled to penetrate Turkey's zone defense and had no answer for some hot outside shooting from Hedo Turkoglu and the host country's post power. France kept it close for roughly the first 17 minutes but after that the rout was on. The final score: Turkey 95, France 77

It was an equally disappointing and frustrating night for Batum, who competed hard on defense but floated on the perimeter on offense, never really a factor as France's guard play was not up to the task.  Batum's offensive activity picked up a bit in the second half as he threw down back-to-back dunks, but it was far too little too late for France. Batum finished with 11 points (4 of 7 from the field), 1 rebound, 1 assist,1 steal and 2 turnovers.

Here's a video of Batum throwing down a crushing two-hand dunk in transition over Turkey's Semih Erden.

And here's a link to another video of Batum finishing an alleyoop on a clever inbounds setup

Patty Mills and Australia were also eliminated today. Rudy Fernandez and Spain have advanced to the round of 8. Nate McMillan and Team USA face Angola in the round of 16 tomorrow morning at 11 AM on ESPN2.

Read the blow-by-blow game reaction in the gameday open thread.

The French guards were awful in dealing with the pressure defense.

They did play great defense on Batum. While he is great at creating from the wings, i would have liked to see him more featured in the offense at the top of the key.

Batum played alright

didn’t look very active on offense, seemed to be doing “the Portand” (standing in the corner, waiting for a pass) through most of the game. Definitely not the reason France lost the game, but part of the reason the deficit grew so large.

I’m conflicted as to whether I’m glad they got bounced. On one hand, I really wanted to see France take on USA or Spain in an elimination game, and to see Batum continue gaining experience as a go to player against top level competition. However, Turkey is a great team and really made things difficult for France with smothering defense, superior guard play (Guler was incredible) and a big height advantage in the post. I’m also looking forward to a healthy Batum coming back stateside and getting to work fully integrating himself into our offense for longer periods now that Marty and Travis are elsewhere.

This was a good thing.

I was rooting for France to win, but I’m glad Batum is getting a decent break. Nico will return with to Portland with some great experience at the 2, and he managed to do so without aggravating that shoulder. Win-win (lose).

Batum got out of the WC healthy, that rates a 10 compared to Eurobasket last summer. Now put him on a plane and send Frenchy back here to Portland and let Bayno put on the pads and start working with Nic on his low post moves. Time’s a-wastin’

completely agreed

I was worried about Batum; after that hard foul, going for that dunk, he has not played as aggressive as he was. Of course, Nic has the reputation of coming and going in the offense, but I contribute that to his defensive assignments.

Anyway, he looked ok and is good to go. So catch the next flight ASAP, get in some pick-up games with the growing group at the practice facility and get this season going

Blah

France was just out-matched. Need to drain threes to bust that zone.

by travis13 on Sep 5, 2010 1:00 PM PDT reply actions

actually...

they’ve done a pretty good job from behind the arc (12-24) but their defense sucked. if you are france and you don’t have tp9, you can’t match with 90 points from your opponent.

and batum just did alright but this france team is far below his level. boris “the jelly belly” diaw and gelabale is nowhere near the standarts batum have as a leader on the floor. it was nice to see batum as a team leader though. he has shown some sparkles about how he can handle the ball but he still got work to do to be a “go to guy”.

Man, Nic is probably pretty disappointed!

At least last year they got to compete to place 5th, now he’s just packing up and heading home. My favorite for the World’s is Spain but that doesn’t mean I didn’t want to see Nic and France advance at least a little bit further. Bummer deal, but as long as they keep the core of guys that are working out really well and add a some more good players they should be able to make some noise in the future.

Was kinda bummed about Patty too, but not super surprised. So, looks like the only Blazer presence still there is Nate and Rudy (ironic, no?) and the latter is still up in the air.

by somanluna1 on Sep 5, 2010 4:15 PM PDT reply actions

France screwed up by losing to NZL, and that by 8 points

Turkey is a good team that deserved to advance, but Spain beating Greece after their initial struggles was more impressive. They got better as the tournament goes into the decisive stage, France (and Australia) got worse.

That is my opinion also.

After Nic got that hard foul, he recessed (12 pts. in the first half and 1 in the second), it seems as if as Batum went, France followed. Spain deserves to win and they have a tradition of getting better as the play-offs proceeds.

mainly because he was pretty much non-existent. His back to back dunks were nice, but by that point France was already packing their bags. The French team just looked terrible. Diaw was awful. There were a few times where Nicolas was wide open under the hoop and no one saw him.

Your last point is the best

Turkey was overplaying the wings and France never really adjusted. How many times did Nico cut to the basket with no one looking for him? I was amazed that they did not keep flashing a player to the foul line and force them to extend up from the center and then just feed the post or a cutter from the baseline. They just kept passing around the outside where the defenders were stacked up to force them further out.

France was over-acheiving to begin with....

they didn’t have a chance. I am glad Nic made it through the World Championships without getting hurt. Hopefully he’ll be back in PDX soon.

Mills only had 3 assists...

the rest of the Australian team only had 2.

Primoz Brezec had 4.

It looks like the Aussies where out classed.

France was just not a great team.

From the beginning, their offense looked worse than maybe any other team I saw. As a team, they couldn’t pass or dribble and their shots were generally poor too. They didn’t set as many off-the-ball screens as the better teams like Spain and Turkey and Lithuania did. They didn’t move without the ball as much. They just always looked like that group of guys you play pickup basketball with. The guys you’ve never seen before in your life and nobody really knows what to do. It was some of the worst offense I’ve seen from a professional team maybe.

What France did well is they hustled and played defense and really tried hard to win. That means something. In this case, it got them into the Top 16 teams in the tournament. But their previously stalwart D crumpled against Turkey. I don’t think Turkey is exactly a better team than Spain or Lithuania. Maybe their coach was finally able to go over some film and figure out how to play against France’s D. Something happened, though. That was France’s first really awful defensive performance of the tournament.

Nicolas Batum's play

For Batum, I never felt like he played poorly really. He never hurt his team. At the very worst, he wouldn’t do much on offense, he’d keep his man mostly locked down on D, and he’d help his teammates out on D. When a player is doing that, you can’t hate on them too much.

The problem was, Batum was easily the team’s best player on offense. And the only time the team ran any plays through Batum was after Batum took over the ball and scored himself. It was like the team or coach then thought “Hey! He looked pretty good just now! Let’s figure out how to give him the ball!” I remember most vividly seeing that during Game 1 against Spain. Batum hadn’t been doing much and then he makes that dunk and the next couple times down the court, the offense was running through Batum. Heck, the rest of the game, Batum was the main focus. And they won. So that was neat.

On the flip side, Batum is still really young. He’s most comfortable being a role player and scoring when he sees some advantageous situation. That’s really good for us here at Portland, because we’re already stocked full of players that are more than willing to shoot the ball. Roy and Aldridge are most useful when they’re shooting, and they’re good at it. Andre likes to put up a decent number of shots per game. The team will be looking to give Oden his. We don’t want anymore players making their identity on shooting. Players like Batum who put up those super efficient 10 points per game are what are needed. The advantage of not being The Scorer on the team, is that the opponent will often kind of get lulled to sleep guarding you. Batum has shown he’s really good at picking up on that brief moment and making a play.

That’s the stuff Batum was doing during the tournament that disappointed a lot of us. The team needed a “go to” scorer. Batum at times rose to the occasion. Just as often, he played the same style of basketball that he always has. It just looked like Batum was inactive to us. I think Batum was just slipping back into his role-player habits. France can be disappointed that Nic didn’t get more aggressive during the last few games (although really, the team went guard-heavy and the guards hardly ever looked at Batum that last game. Whether that’s Batum’s fault or their fault, I don’t know), as Blazer fans, I didn’t hardly see anything to be disappointed in. Batum experienced a little bit of the burden of being The Guy on a team. He sometimes really shone in that role. At times he made a lot of mistakes. But Batum the role player is consistent and solid. Even during the tournament. We can still be excited by the kid.

Good stuff, rec

What you’re saying is that Nic is a Swiss army-knife kind of player (even though he’s, ah, French) We saw a few games last year where Batum got his scoring mo-jo working, and then Monty brought him back to reality and let Nic know what Portland needed from him every night was a commitment to defend. Batum needs to be a threat in the offense, for no other reason than he isn’t the “weak link” standing in the corner for opposing coaches to hide their poorest defender (Gentry; Nash, etc) The other day Bayno said that that he is going to put on the pads and work with Nic on his low-post game, and I say the sooner the better.

I’m glad that Nic had the opportunity to see what being “Brandon Roy” felt like for his National team. I’m even more happy that he appears to come out of the experience with his right arm still attached to his body. But as a Blazer fan I’m most concerned about how he progresses as an occasional low-post threat in Portland’s offense, so those little PGs will have nowhere to hide against the Blazer’s starting lineup

Yeah, that'd be really neat.

You don’t see a whole lot of players with Batum’s physique posting up, but if Kobe Bryant, Andre Miller and Chauncey Billups can do it to take advantage of smaller players, there is no reason that Batum shouldn’t be able to learn.

I’ve found that posting up takes a certain kind of mentality (just like getting the “defensive mentality” and the “shooter mentality”). I’ve been trying to work on my own post play and it’s really tough. If you’re used to making all your moves and shots facing the hoop, it’s really awkward changing everything around and putting your back to the hoop. I wouldn’t expect Nic to suddenly have a smooth post game by the time the season starts (or even over the course of this season), but if that’s something he gets down over the next couple of years, he’d be about as deadly of a role player as you can get. Heck. I’m not sure with that skill set he’d even be a role player anymore.

But we probably shouldn’t expect too much very soon. What we got out of Batum was pretty good last year. Developing new moves usually takes a while.

Also, as awesome as a post-up game would be, I’d almost rather see him improve at figuring out screens on defense. His 1-on-1 defense is so good right now. Probably all players struggle against the pick ‘n roll (which is why it’s so popular in the NBA). But if he could improve at fighting through those screens….

by Z-Bones on Sep 6, 2010 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Bayno said the other day

he was going to to work with Nic on a couple of post moves and counter moves, then have him try them out against Luke and Dante. I don’t see this as becoming a staple of Batum’s offense, it will just be something the team can go to if the opposing coach tries to hide a small PG by having him stand near Batum over in the corner.

The long-term target for Nic’s back-to-the-basket game is Tayshaun Prince. They have similar physiques and Prince is able to make plays by backing a smaller defender down from the wing towards the lane and make a pass to a cutter whenever the defense tries to send help

This will be a work in progress, but it’s something that Nate talked to Batum about during his exit interview, so it’s in the developmental pipeline

if you want to listen to Bayno’s podcast, there’s a link over on the sidebar
