Gameday Open Thread: France Vs. Turkey

Photo

Nicolas Batum and France begin play in the knockout round of the 2010 FIBA World Championships at 11AM this morning. Their opponent is Turkey, the host country. In case you hadn't heard, Nicolas Batum is kind of a big deal.

Head over to ESPN3.com to watch it online (where available).

Yesterday, Rudy Fernandez and Spain prevailed over Greece to advance to the round of 8.

Meanwhile, Patty Mills and Australia just got shown the door by Slovenia

Leave your in-game thoughts and observations below. All regular gameday thread rules apply.

After the game we'll vote to rate Batum's performance once again.

As much as I want France to win

..They don’t have much of a chance do they? Gonna need a big game from Nic and at least one other.

Not even a big game by two or three Frenchies is gonna make it.

Turkey has a better team, plays at home and loves it some referees. France won´t get anything but a cold.

by amlmart1 on Sep 5, 2010 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I saw a little bit of Turkey's game with China and two things were made perfectly clear...

1) Hedo is not the only decent player in Turkey.
2) Yao is the only decent player in China.

I just want to see "Neeco" play well, and show that his shoulder is OK.

Has anybody heard if he is OK? I heard he might have tweaked his shoulder in the last game.

by upper left corner on Sep 5, 2010 10:38 AM PDT reply actions

No reports about that.

But he probably wouldn´t say anything if something is going on, because contenders could look for contact on his shoulder if they know about it.

Pregame interview

In short:

We are all in the same direction. We´ll try to repeat the success we had at the start of the competition. Turkey is the favorite. They play at home, nobody has defeated them yet, they have Turkoglu, they have a good front court… It´s going to be dificult but he wants to be positive. He thinks the best strategie is to defend hard, make them play, force some turnovers, and keep the game close so they start doubting about the outcome, knowing that only one defeat and they are out of the tournament.

by amlmart1 on Sep 5, 2010 11:00 AM PDT up reply actions

I can't actually see the game,

but it looks like the two NBA vets are coming out swinging. Phoenix will be a great fit for Hedo.

so far...

France isn’t playing to win, they are playing to not lose…kinda deer in the headlights

by Pat28K on Sep 5, 2010 11:27 AM PDT reply actions

As much as I want France to advance

and play Spain or US later in the tourney, I wouldn’t mind seeing france end their run so Nico could shift his focus to preparing for another NBA season. I believe with Marty in Minny, we will see closer to 30 minutes a game for Batum. He needs to take a little break, and then come stateside and start working.

Nonetheless, I disagree with those who claimed it was a bad idea to let Nico play for France, even with the possibility of injury. Players gotta play to improve, and with Parker, Noah, and Turiaf sitting out, Batum is playing a much larger role against high level competition. This experience can only do good things for his development.

I went back and forth on whether he should be over there.

In the end, I just had to remember how much he improved last summer and throw another penny in the wishing well.

Like Bayno said

Nico’s got all the tools necessary, he just needs to improve his confidence, get a bigger role, and maybe put on a little muscle. International play provides 2 of 3.

I don't know...

I think Hedo will do well in their system, but without Amare their muscle is going to have to come from Robin Lopez and Channing Frye.

Should be very interesting to see how they deal with the Blazers. The double teams they threw at us in the playoffs will be tough to get away with. PHX still has a great defender in Grant Hill, but he’s hardly enough.

I'm not sure about that

Channing was in the thick of it in the playoffs, averaging 5.6 rebounds. Looked like something finally clicked without Oden and Przybilla taking care of business. He will never be mistaken for a bruiser, but I think Frye is servicable against most centers if they have to go with him in spurts.

They have this unfortunate tendency to go absolutely cold on offense for long periods, at the worst time this time.
