Rating Rudy Fernandez In Spain vs. Greece at FIBA World Championships

Vote and discuss Rudy Fernandez's performance in today's FIBA World Championships game between Spain and Greece.

Fernandez finished with 14 points (4 of 7 from the field), 2 rebounds, 0 assists and 1 steal as Spain beat Greece 80-72 in a very entertaining game. Fernandez got off to a slow start but closed very well, hitting a three, drawing a foul on another three-point attempt and helping Spain blow open a very tight game in the final six minutes of the fourth quarter.

Spain advances to the quarterfinals and will face Serbia on Wednesday. Nicolas Batum and

I almost think that unless the player plays terribly

that the poll’s lowest should be a 3. otherwise you have knuckleheads putting a 1

Until he's not, Rudy's a Blazer.

Maybe someone thought 1 was the best grade

Otherwise yeah, it would be ridiculous to give him the worst grade for his very nice performance in this game compared to his usual play and compared to his teammates and strong opponents.

I love it when people try to be so sanctimonious and vengeful

I voted 1 because I consider these polls to be a farce, just like I voted 10 for Nic mainly because he came out of the WC healthy (as far as we know)

Why don’t you find something better to do with your time, rather than to check up on me? I’ve already made my lack of personal animosity re: Rudy very clear, and I don’t expect him to report to Portland’s fall camp, regardless (unless he comes back with his tail tucked between his legs, claiming he was “misunderstood and misquoted” etc)

Hmm, I agree with two4larue in this case.

Practically speaking, Rudy Fernandez is unlikely to be with the Portland Trail Blazers in any meaningful capacity come this season; thus, it’s pragmatic to view the team’s future without him in the picture.

At the same time, though, Fernandez has thus far outperformed Nicolas Batum in the FIBA World Championship, for whatever that’s worth. If anything, it shows how overvalued Batum has become with a certain segment of Blazer fans.

But both of them are fun to talk about.

Even if their odyssey’s are unlikely to be what decides whether we are in the NBA finals in the coming years.

And the Blazer’s coaching staff, who Bayno said are in agreement that Batum is an all-star waiting to happen

but I already know what you think of the Blazer’s coaching staff

Nic played as well as he could with the French team, just as Rudy has done his best with team Espana. As far as the Portland Trail Blazers are concerned, the two young men are headed in completely different directions. I’d rather discuss Batum’s upside, because he’s much more likely to be a long-term Blazer

Not just "get out"

but for Rich Cho to receive an equitable offer in trade from another NBA team. It’s good to hear that Fernandez is playing well and re-establishing his trade value, in Turkey

Mike Barrett said a few interesting things on the air the other day about the Blazer’s foreign players. First, he said that a major criteria for Rudy was that the next US city he plays in has a direct flight to Spain. The second thing was MB compared how quickly Batum learned how to communicate in English with his coaches and teammates and how that helped him “fit in” so well with the rest of the players. Mike contrasted this to Rudy’s experience, and it’s easy to see now (in hindsight) that while having Sergio around during his rookie year may have helped Fernandez acclimate himself to the NBA lifestyle, OTOH Rudy didn’t have to make the language and cultural adjustment on his own, like the 19 year old Frenchman did. Barrett said that to listen to Nic during interviews now (as compared to 2008) it’s incredible how well he’s picked up the language, etc.

Direct flight???

As in, the minute his contract is up he flies directly to Spain and says adios to the NBA.

by 52therim on Sep 4, 2010 6:09 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I think he'd like to be able to fly home during the all-star break, etc

and make it easier for his family and girlfriend to visit, etc

Logistically, it makes sense. Rudy’s not going to be paid unless he plays in the NBA during the next 2 seasons, so he’s trying to pick his next NBA city with travel in mind

Are we sure that a team is going to pick up his option year?

I assume that happens as it won’t be for big $$, but I’m not aware if it has happened already.
Herein lies the problem. Rudy’s heart is in Spain, not in the NBA. We aren’t willing to trade fair value for a 1-year rental of Carmelo. Why do we think a team will do it for Rudy? We desperately needed help at SG with Roy’s injury, but Rudy didn’t make this team better. Yet we expect to make a trade to move Rudy that makes this team better. Really??
I agree with the people who see Rudy’s talent. In the right situation, he could make a team better. That, by itself, doesn’t mean Rudy has trade value. It does mean that I don’t want to see him playing for our WC rivals.
Let him have his direct flight to Spain. Just make sure it isn’t from LAX.

Let him have his direct flight to Spain. Just make sure it isn’t from LAX.

Despite what some folks may think, I value Rudy’s basketball abilities highly, and I’m glad that he’s played as well as he has in Turkey. As I mentioned earlier today, there are 144 minutes per game at the 1-2-3 positions. Divided by 5 players that comes out to 28.8 for each man. Add a 6th player to that equation and it’s a real logjam.

Rudy’s agent told Portland he was unhappy and wanted to be traded (timeline: last December) so the team used their full MLE to acquire Matthews. Couple that addition with Bayless’ improvement and the roster already has 5 quality players in that rotation at the PG-SG-SF, so if Fernandez reneges on his threat to sit out, it will result in more “sacrifices” for all of the other “happy campers” in that quintet

We’ve been down this road before, and I for one don’t relish a repeat performance.

Could Fernandez’ shooting and passing skills help the Blazers in 2010-2011? Sure. Will he be happy playing fewer minutes than ever, because of the team’s depth? Not likely. So, I’m rooting for a deal to be made this month and it certainly helps for other NBA GMs to watch Rudy playing well (and with passion) for team Espana in Turkey. Whether their interest in Rudy will lead to a proposal that will satisfy Cho/Allen remains to be seen, and I agree with you that a reunion between Rudy and Pau in L*A is not in Portland’s best interests

For me to give a player a "1", they must have met the following criteria...

1) Fouled out, or was ejected.
2) Shot below 20%.
3) Did not go into double digits in any category, except turnovers, and the “-” part of the “+/-” stat.
4) Stepped out of bounds.
and 5) Accidentally injured a teammate off the court.

Pretty bad first half

But he finished strong. He isn’t doing a lot to bolster his claims for more minutes in Portland or anywhere else in the NBA. I still think he could be an impact player off the bench for a good team but he has really shot himself in the foot PRwise this last few months. For his sake, I hope he realizes that he needs to just show up to whatever training camp he ends up in and let his play speak for itself.

Yeah

he has shown that he can be very effective over short periods of time, which means he would be a perfect 25 MPG off the bench player.

Until he's not, Rudy's a Blazer.

by collectiveshane on Sep 4, 2010 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

It´s not about minutes...

People here thinks he wants to be THE MAN (starting and playing 35+ minutes), but that has never been his role in the Spanish NT (20-25 mpg, 3º option in offense), and he has never complaint about it…

by Datmater on Sep 5, 2010 2:27 AM PDT up reply actions

it's kind of hard to tell what Rudy really wants

We know he doesn’t just want to stand around and shoot, even though he’s good at it

He’s said he wants to handle the ball more and make more plays, but he doesn’t have a left hand and he doesn’t choose to penetrate and draw contact very often (like Bayless, or Ginobli)

He’s a creative entry passer, but his A/TO ratio is slightly lower that 2/1. That’s OK for a SG, but Roy is Portland’s primary 2

As far as I can tell, Rudy wants to play somewhere else. For a different coach who plays a more free-flowing system. In a city where he can fly directly to Spain, and for a winning team. If he can get all of these wishes granted, then 25 mpg and 7 shots per game will probably be OK. Because then he won’t be in Portland, playing for Nate, and halfway around the world from Palma de Mallorca

by two4larue on Sep 5, 2010 5:35 PM PDT up reply actions

His role on the national team is not that different

With Navarro at SG, Rudy mostly just is “doing the Portland” to quote Nic, i.e. standing around the perimeter ready to catch and shoot. He does play a somewhat bigger role on defense since Navarro is no star defender either, and has a surprising rebounding performance in the tournament. And his foul shooting in the tournament is excellent at over 90%.

Not a Blazer

Rudy has made it very clear, very publicly, that he does not want to come back to the Trailblazers and play in Nate’s system. And, by signing Matthews, Utah’s starting SG, the Blazers have made it equally clear that he will not play 25 mpg, nor be the first man off the bench to back Roy in most situations.

Why, then, do we continue to follow him as if he were a Blazer, when in fact, he has chosen to leave?

After all, the way he handled it virtually guaranteed that the Blazers would be unable to get any value for him.

A second team player is in no position to make demands – yet Rudy has made it clear to the Blazers and the league, that if he can’t play for a team that plays the way he wants to play, that he will pick up his marbles and go back to Europe and play there when his contract expires in 2 years. Not only did this leave the Blazers with a very short list of teams to try to trade him to, eliminating most of the trade options we might have had, but it also told those teams that if they don’t play him as he wants to play, and in two years, give him a contract that is comparable to what he can get it Europe, that they’ll lose him, just as the Blazers are losing him now.

The demands on the Blazers, after all, are transferable to every other team equally.

There aren’t many teams that want a player who decides that he has the leverage to dictate to the coaches the style of play, let alone one who can and will leave if they don’t play him and pay him what he desires.

Whether today, or in two years, Rudy has left the league with the impression that short of being a well paid star in the NBA, he may prefer playing in Europe. And since he can pick up the equivalent after tax income of a $6 million or higher NBA contract in Europe, this means he must become either a starting SG, or a very valuable 6th man in the NBA.

The result is that even if Rudy performs well, that performance will do little to enhance his value given the situation. I don’t believe, after all, that anyone – at this point – believes he has that kind of talent.

In any case, since he’s now a Blazer in name only, not in fact, what are we wasting our time on him for?

In the same way as when I read an absurd post about Rudy, I also know who it’s from. Of course, Eben, we don’t have the same “special inside sources” that others have. I guess, in the meantime, we’ll just have to rely on good common sense, like the comments you made here.

We all love drama

And it is the off season. As long as he is a Blazer, even if only in name, there will be interest in what happens to him amongst Blazer fans.
I understand your desire to put him in the past but until he gets traded or doesn’t show up for training camp, all his agents comments about him staying in Europe are just efforts to force the Blazers’ hand. It will still be interesting to see what he actually does if the Blazers still hold his rights and how he does in this tournament does play a role in what the Blazers may or may not be able to accomplish via trade. I can’t speak for anyone else but that is why I am watching.

I wish there was as much about Batum as there is Rudy, but other than that what are we supposed to talk about? How long until Roy or Oden get hurt? If we can trade 2nd round picks for cp3? If LMA really gained 25lbs of muscles and loves rebounding more then 17’ jumpers now?

The demands on the Blazers, after all, are transferable to every other team equally.

With one possible exception. The other day Barrett was saying that one of Rudy’s main concerns is that he play in an NBA city where he can catch a direct flight to Spain. Portland can’t offer him that, but several other NBA cities can. It’s easy to say that “Rudy will just leave the next NBA team that he plays for in a couple of years” but who really knows, for sure? 2 years ago Fernandez signed with the Blazers and everything was hunky-dory. Is it not possible that he could change his mind about returning to Europe if he joins a different NBA team and things work out better, from Rudy’s point-of-view?

I understand the difficulty of Cho’s task, but Rich is looking for a deal that will make everyone happy, including the team’s owner.

I don’t believe, after all, that anyone – at this point – believes he has that kind of talent.

It only takes one, and there are 29 other NBA teams.

In any case, since he’s now a Blazer in name only, not in fact, what are we wasting our time on him for?

I couldn’t agree more. Well said. rec

The Poll

The poll should have a “didn’t watch” vote so everyone can participate.

by Sonic Boom on Sep 5, 2010 7:46 AM PDT reply actions

When a veteran professional Agent

and his client decide to go public, it’s purely strategic and designed to leverage the client out of an existing situation. It also has other ramifications – which the agent knows. It makes it difficult, if not impossible for the player to return to the team he has publicly decided to leave. Rudy doesn’t like Mac’s style of play, nor his role in it. Mac and the Blazers will never change their style to match Rudy’s, and having stated his position, Rudy is very unlikely to retract what he said, let alone try to convince anyone that he has decided to kiss and makeup and love the style and his role in it. The agent and Rudy drew a line in the sand. The damage is done – and it was intentional.

If the Blazers force/bring Rudy back, every decision made concerning Rudy, his playing time, his performance, and his motivation or lack of it will be picked apart.

There is a practical reality to these things – and it affects all organizations everywhere. If an employee is unhappy, but chooses to handle it internally, there is often a road back to staying in the company. When it goes public, there almost never is such a road back. Rudy and his agent decided to burn that bridge.

by Eben Calder on Sep 5, 2010 9:32 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Again, good stuff

It’s hard to comment about Fernandez without eliciting an emotional reaction from Blazer fans, but once again you have presented an objective commentary.

What I want is what’s best for the team. When a player makes it clear that he doesn’t want to be a part of the team anymore, he shouldn’t expect the same treatment as players in good standing. My focus necessarily shifts to “what’s the best possible return that Portland can receive for this disgruntled player in a deal?” not “how is he going to look playing next to Roy and Batum?” in a hypothetical lineup that has little chance of ever being realized.

Once he’s playing for a team in a different uniform, I won’t follow his progress—that goes for former Blazers who have been traded away on amicable terms, as well—unless he’s playing for the team that Portland is facing on a given night. (I don’t expect all NBA fans to “root for laundry” this way, but this has been my outlook for 40+ years.)

The Blazers are “my” guys; you don’t ask out of the gang and then expect to be welcomed back in. It’s a privilege to wear the red/black

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Sep 5, 2010 6:05 PM PDT up reply actions

My point exactly.

He’s not our guy anymore. And, his demands have severely reduced Cho’s flexibility in getting equivalent value back. There are 8 cities in the NBA with direct flights to Spain, for example. Of those, only a few seem to have much interest given Rudy’s demands. And teams like Chicago and New York don’t have much of interest to the Blazers. Without the demands, Portland could have expected to get a 20 mpg contributor for the bench. With them, we’re dealing for less.

by Eben Calder on Sep 6, 2010 6:01 AM PDT up reply actions

It stinks, because the Rudy situation was like a quarterback telegraphing a pass

Last summer I said it will be 12-18 months before Rudy makes a trade request, so it would be a good idea to flip him before the inevitable happens and his trade value starts circling the drain. (Turns out I was being too generous/conservative, because the “private” trade request came from his agent, last December.) Regardless, this “I’m not happy in Portland” scenario was Drazen Petrovic, part 2. If it wasn’t for the Pritchard-Allen distrust/innuendo last winter Fernandez would probably have been flipped at the deadline for a fairly-decent return, and we wouldn’t have to still be reading speculation re: his future on BE in September
