JD 9/4/10 - schooljunking

So I start my senior year of high school on Tuesday.

That being the major catastrophe that it is, I figured it belongs in its very own junk drawer.

Sharing is caring, so anyone who has stories or feelings or vague memories regarding their school careers and the like, please step forward to share them. Plus if anyone has any advice on scholarships i should apply for, that would be greatly appreciated :)

Junk away, my friends.

I don't know who I am anymore. Not once in life have I been real, but I've never felt this close before. I've been looking in your window, i've been dressing in your clothes. I've been walking dead, watching you long enough to know I can't go on.

Sign up for the FAFSA

It’s free to sign up for and you get bank.

If you want to make sure you’re doing it right, go to College Goal Sunday (workshops all around the country on the last Sunday in January) and they’ll help you fill it out.

Link for the one in Oregon: http://www.collegegoaloregon.org/

by prezofdeath on Sep 4, 2010 12:58 AM PDT reply actions

The other, of course, is to go directly to the school and see if they have scholarships

I go to WSU, and they have an easy on-line form to fill out.

I literally applied for FAFSA and WSU’s scholarship (one online form), and that was it. I get tuition + cash just from that.

It’s worth your time and effort to talk to the financial aid departments of the top few schools you’re looking at and see what they offer.

No matter where you go, be smart, be poor, or be rich. Don’t be an average student from a middle class family, or you’re toast, unfortunately (one reason why I’m not a fan of our current higher-ed system).

by prezofdeath on Sep 4, 2010 1:01 AM PDT up reply actions

This is very true.

Plus, financial aid support is getting pretty sketchy. There were a lot of kids who qualified last year but didn’t receive state need grants due to inadequate funding.

by Cablinasian on Sep 4, 2010 8:27 AM PDT up reply actions

Even Bill Gates noticed that in a recent speech at the Aspen Institute

E.g. California is raising tuition and cutting aid since other measures to balance the budget and improve the health care and pension system were denied (like cutting salaries for prison guards). Unfortunate.

the problem is

were deep in debt but my parents annual income is technically over $70000 so FAFSA was like ‘loans sucka!’

get 4.0s for fall semester

you wanna’ be over that 3.5 mark for sure.

The best is to talk to college counselors…they see real college kids every day and know where their $$ is coming from. HS counselors usually don’t follow up with kids once they’re out the door.

The thing you might want to talk to a HS counselor about is taking college courses while in HS. I know in Washington it’s called Running Start, and if you can pass college entrance exam, you can take college courses and get HS + college credit simultaneously.

I’m not an expert on Oregon, but is that what OSU’s “extended campus” is? Might want to look into that if ya haven’t already…http://ecampus.oregonstate.edu/online-degrees/k12/hs/

If he can hold a civilized conversation at that point then figure out what it is about what you said that made him so upset it brought him to tears. Unfortunately, if he’s crying, the odds of a rational talk are slim to none. Yelling at him=making things worse. Has anyone seen the Nazi funded THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN from 1943?

I hear it is amazing, especially for it’s time, and is a huge budget color movie with lots of nice FX and nudity and is cool.

Obviously, we didn’t watch it in the US when it came out, and occupied countries weren’t thrilled with Nazi movies either. So it seems to be sorta forgotten, but I always heard it was great. I am procuring it right now; it isn’t easy to find.

Anyone seen it?

Or seen the Czech cartoons of Baron Munchausen from, shoot, I dunno when… I hear those are rad too.

I grew up loving the Terry Gilliam version from 1988, I’ve seen it hundreds of times as a kid, and supposedly a lot of scenes are straight outta the 1943 Nazi version and the Czech cartoon.

by Mortimer on Sep 4, 2010 2:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, it's a good movie. And the main actor in it was no Nazi at all...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Albers

He had a Jewish girlfriend that he refused to distance himself from (though he eventually sent her out of the country) and stopped working in theaters as requested as a protest, and was a really good actor and not just someone who came to prominence then because some politician liked him.

If you are interested in movies with actors popular in this time and beyond, you should also check out Heinz Rühman

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004464/
He was a world class character actor and comedian, some famous movies are e.g.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Feuerzangenbowle_(1944_film)
Cult classic at universities, they stalled finishing production so actors wouldn’t get drafted to the war

The Good Soldier Schweik http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053674/
Great military satire (1960)

It Happened in Broad Daylight http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051588/
One of the best thrillers, adapted from a Swiss novel and made for US cinemas by Jack Nicholson much later as “The Pledge”

He also did remakes of “My friend Harvey”, “Death of a Salesman”, some propaganda movies about a pilot in Africa that are still funny and good, a series with a priest who investigates murders a la Columbo as “Father Brown”, and so on and so on. Truly not only a popular but also a very versatile and prolific actor who is not known well in the US.

And from what I've read

Besides portraying Russians as fat caviar eating fools and Arabs as cruel to their black slaves, the Baron Munchausen movie isn’t really supposed to have any political message or Nazi themes.

It just gets taken down from it’s role in movie history because of dem dang Nazis.

I ain’t watched it yet, but I’m excited to.

#52

by Mortimer on Sep 5, 2010 1:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Quite a number of the good movies produced in this time by all sides are rather escapism movies than propaganda

To distract the population that had enough to worry about every day a little bit. Those are the classics. The true propaganda films are junk.

"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban

by Norsktroll on Sep 5, 2010 1:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Besides in a campy way

I can’t think of any good propaganda films, ever. They’re all lame.

I do enjoy stuff like Aquaman punching out Hitler and things like that, though.

#52

by Mortimer on Sep 5, 2010 2:02 AM PDT up reply actions

The 1936 Olympics documentary and “Triumph of the Will” both by Riefenstahl has arguably impacted cinematography a lot, but is obviously propaganda made to show “super humans”. Lots of camera angles from frog perspective, impressive mass scenes with 30000 extras, etc. Ironically she later made documentaries with a similar style about the Nuba in southern Sudan, so she didn’t buy into the “white supremacy” argument but only into the aesthetics.

"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban

by Norsktroll on Sep 5, 2010 2:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Oops, forgot about the Riefenstahl stuff

I was thinking more propaganda movie-movies, like fiction/narrative type film, not documentary, but her docus are extremely well known and well made for their time so she counts as successful and enduring propaganda.

Rudy?

"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban

by Norsktroll on Sep 4, 2010 5:30 AM PDT up reply actions

what is the feeling among Spanish fans about this whole Rudy situation?

I’m not as familiar with international basketball as the NBA, nor am I familiar with European tabloids, so are his statements a more usual thing over there than what we are taking it as? Do players who are not happy with their current contracts, or roles, regularly express this through the media instead of engaging in closed door negotiations?
I’m wondering if their is any possible way of getting back to a place where both the Blazers and Rudy can be happy with each other. I’m also wondering what Spanish fans think about the Blazers, or will think about the Blazers when this whole thing ends up being figured out.
My take on this situation, is that Rudy had higher expectations about his role than what he got, and this was exacerbated by his injury, and subsequent lack of playing time. I also feel he could have done more once he did get back in the rotation to show why he deserved what he began to demand. I can understand that he feels like he gave up a lot to come to the NBA, but really he’s only been here for two years, and one of those years was probably one of his worst as a professional athlete. The road to success in the NBA can take years for players, and while we thought he had a leg up on American players of his age because he has been a pro for so long, perhaps the longer NBA season, and the stronger players have worn him down, and not let him play his game like he’s accustomed. I also feel like he came back more timid about driving to the basket, after the Arriza foul, which while I can understand this, does not help him have a well rounded game.
So I guess I’m wondering if Spanish fans think that Nate, or the Blazers have screwed him over, and not let him just be Rudy, or if you see some of the things I have seen? Maybe you as an individual have an independent opinion of the situation, but I was wondering if their is some kind of consensus in public opinion over there.

I'm a Greg Oden honk, yeah.

Even when I was still a Sonic fan, I liked Oden more than Kevin Durant.

Most people are biased.

Many people who knows or practice basketball dislike the individualism and physicality of the NBA, where most highlights are dunks, while a Euro would choose a team play as the highlight of a game. They also think Pau Gasol was underrated in the NBA for a long time, and fans think that happens to other players. Many fans want also our players back, so we can see them in our competitions. At the end, that context counts when they evaluate Rudy´s situation. I think many fans blame Nate, others blame Rudy, but there´s not hate against them or against the Blazers. There´s almost a consensus about Nate´s offense being predictable and boring and a bad fit for Rudy. Nobody says that Nate is a bad coach, though.

Known NFL cuts

Of local players, from the O

http://blog.oregonlive.com/nfl/2010/09/nfl_local_ties_chicago_release.html

Al Afalava, safety, Oregon State: He started 13 games as a rookie last season but the Bears added two starting-caliber safeties in the offseason leaving Afalava on the outside looking in. Look for him to get scooped up in a hurry.

Tony Curtis, tight end, Portland State: Released by San Francisco.

Jeremiah Johnson, running back, Oregon: A dislocated toe against Tampa Bay led to the Texans waiving Johnson. According to the Houston Chronicle, Houston will reach an injury settlement with Johnson and could bring him back to the practice squad.

Keaton Kristick, linebacker, Oregon State: The rookie was released by San Francisco. Might have strong chance to land on a practice squad.

Will Tukuafu, defensive line, Oregon: The rookie, released by San Francisco, was also cut during the summer by Seattle.

#52

by tominhawaii on Sep 4, 2010 2:26 PM PDT reply actions

Leinart was a first-round draft choice from USC. Whisenhunt entered the NFL as 12th-round draft choice from Georgia Tech. Leinart was handed the starting job early in his career. Whisenhunt had to scrap his way through a seven-season career with three teams; nothing was handed to him. As Cardinals coach, Whisenhunt sought to establish an us-against-the-world mentality. Leinart represented the world in that equation. He was too cool to be the underdog — or the backup to Anderson. It just wasn’t in his USC DNA.

Leinart could have made this work if he had played by Whisenhunt’s rules. He wasn’t willing (or possibly able) to do that under difficult circumstances. He complained and pouted and made it impossible for Whisenhunt to name Leinart the leader of a locker room filled with players more closely aligned with the Whisenhunt mindset. Besides, it’s not like Leinart had impressed on the practice fields. He hadn’t taken control of the team.

I finally broke down and set up an offline storage system for our photos

I was always worried about an incident at the house causing us to lose all our pictures.

But even then, it’s so easy to lose a few pictures from recent trips, unless you have a fullproof process. I’m trying to find a way that both myself and the wife can easily upload and know it’s immediately safe. Seems easier said than done.

by Timmay! on Sep 4, 2010 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions

You mean offsite?

I’ll try to follow the 3-2-1 rule in the future for valuable files. 3 backups, 2 different media, 1 of those offsite. I have some good ideas how to set it up, but so far I just haven’t got to it. I generally have my files backed up to external WD drives and a time machine, and some offsite storage at Dropbox and iDisk, but it’s not foolproof and comprehensive enough yet. I’m thinking about a Pogostick (for easy road access to media files), and Carbonite or paying for a larger Dropbox archive. Maybe a Drobo to hot-swap drives if my photo and music/podcast/video archives all surpass 1TB and I have the money.

"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban

by Norsktroll on Sep 4, 2010 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep I meant offsite, my bad.

I have two onsite copies on different servers in different rooms, and one offsite copy of photos (though I do need to back up some non-photo data still).

by Timmay! on Sep 4, 2010 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I've been meaning to set up a safe deposit box for any important documentation

Toss a backup HD in there and it’s a fairly inexpensive extra offsite location.

by Timmay! on Sep 4, 2010 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I was a bit worried on a few longer trips that someone might break in and carry away not just my computer but my archive. I hid one away from the computer since I didn’t have the time to upload everything, but it’s not good. Fire and floods don’t really scare me here, but aside from simple tech failures a burglar could be a possibility and that would suck since it’s all but impossible to recreate everything I ever have created, achieved or collected in paper and digital files.

"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban

by Norsktroll on Sep 4, 2010 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Burglars and fires are the best ways to explain the need for offline backups

They’re the least predictable culprits, and will destroy everything in their path.

I wish I could track down one of my friends with colocation space, because then I’d just set up my own server and sync whenever I want.

My friend and I have been trying a few different offline sync products. They all require monthly or yearly fees, but they seem to work ok so far. Some of them have either iphone/android apps, or will allow you to easily access them via mobile web site interface.

by Timmay! on Sep 4, 2010 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I think something like the about $50 for Carbonite is fair considering the peace of mind it brings as a real insurance. The Pogostick I mentioned above is a good way to bring existing backups online, but that doesn’t protect you against things getting carried away. And yes, some safe for the most valuable stuff would also be a decent idea. I have stored some of that on SD cards since all Macs now have that slot. I don’t think it’s a perfect backup technology, but it’s pretty robust and I just took them with me to the US since they are so small to have some kind of fallback. I also thought about just burying one encrypted in the woods ;)

A paraphrased set of quotes from the analyst during the final 60 seconds of the half

BYU, down by 1, used a lucky bounce on a punt to pin UW to their own 1 yard line with 1 minute left.

“BYU is out of timeouts. I think UW will just take a few knees and head to the locker room after a rough first half.”
“They seem to be taking a chance and trying Locker’s arm. I don’t know what they’re thinking here”
“This is a bad idea.”
“That was some good gained yardage, but I’m not sure what he’s trying to accomplish here”.
“They’re at the 50 yard line… this is why I’m an analyst and not coaching.”
“See, this is why they shouldn’t have done this, if that had been an interception, BYU would have scored a TD.”
“This is outside of the UW kicker’s comfort zone, but I guess they may as well try it anyway”
“WOW, he hits the Field Goal with yards to spare and they head to the locker room!”

That was entertaining.

Nice. I just like TCU's running game more. I like power football, which is ironic considering I'm a Seahawks fan.

Nebraska being my college team makes up for it though.

I just don’t like that blue turf. I feel like it’s kind of cheating. I like everything else about the Broncos though.

this game is a no-lose for OSU

If they lose, it’s the 6 team in the nation, essentially in their house. If they win, big national respect. Either way, they get better and Katz gains fantastic experience.

Unless they get absolutely blown out I agree

If they can hold it to a 10-point loss or less, that’s fine, but 21 or more and it will look not good.

Oregon State’s downfall for years has been the 2nd half. The real difference between good and great teams is who can finish games. OSU needs to show it can.

by dario argento on Sep 4, 2010 6:24 PM PDT up reply actions

We had a succession of coaches that made us progressively better, but we were a stepping stone

Houston Nutt went to Arkansas, Dirk Koetter went to ASU, Dan Hawkins went to Colorado. Koetter and Hawkins have not done well since leaving. Everyone was sure we were screwed when Hawkins left, but his offensive coordinator, Chris Petersen, has proven to be the brains of the operation. Peterson is a truly superb coach, and seems genuinely committed to staying in Boise instead of bailing like previous coaches. So the short answer is no and yes.

It was the Nazis' culture too.

The Nazis warranted a response which was war. The Japanese slaughtering of dolphins and threatening they’re viability warrants and appropriate response as well. Obviously that’s an extreme example, but it’s the philosophy that we shouldn’t just sit back idly and watch injustice happen when we have the ability to do something about it. That is being human; fighting for what you believe in.

I was going to agree with both of your points until the grammar snafu too.

Now, I find it lacking.

Actually, I have no problem with cultures attempting to influence one another, and I think strict isolationism makes an assumption of the ‘sanctity’ of the term ‘sovereign nation’ that I’m not willing to make. But comparing the need for international forces to step in and stop anything comparable to the Nazis with this issue does not make a good case, and people would save a lot more animals trying to affect corporate culture over cultures abroad.

He was really good at keeping a steady hand, making good decisions in crunch time, and the little tricks like rushing up as fast as you can to run a play after a questionable catch so the other coach can’t challenge. I think he used to be a fine QB, and worthy of the probowl.

Now Alexander winning MVP was another matter. His incredible season was due to one of the greatest left tackles the game has ever seen, one of the best guards in pro-bowler Hutchinson, an awesome and fat pro-bowler porkchop Womack in his prime at center, and pro-bowler Mack Strongm, all blocking for Alexander. I swear, I think I could have got some of those TD’s he got that year with the holes those monsters were creating for him.

But yes, O-line play is under-rated.

I'd like another well-timed turnover for OSU please.

Or just during the early part of the season when everyone is excited?

We’ll prolly make football gameday threads in the future for big games, but it’ll cool off once basketball starts again.

8-4 when he won, which is the relevant number.

UW could be 7-5 or 8-4. It’s unlikely, but I don’t think anyone said he was the Heisman favorite.

That was never going to happen, though.

I did hope for the UW to go 9-3, but now 7-5 seems to be a likely scenario.
