No matter Rudy Fernandez's recent actions, that's a terrible value trade for New York from strictly ...

an on-court sense. If Anthony Randolph is dealt by New York, it better be in a package for someone like Carmelo Anthony.

It seems like a fair deal

at least from the Blazers perspective. The story doesn’t indicate what year the pick would have been, but the next couple years it could be a pretty nice slot.

by hercher on Sep 3, 2010 9:41 AM PDT reply actions

yeah exactly, great deal for everyone except New York

I’d take a 1st rounder from Indy/NY for Rudy…will probably be a lottery pick

But essentially trading Rudy for Anthony Randolph would be HORRIBLE for the Knicks, Randolph is young and still has a ton of upside and is a unique athlete that could still be a star, and Rudy is…..well…..Rudy

by rip_city_swagger on Sep 3, 2010 10:12 AM PDT reply actions

I think Rudy is worth more than a non-lottery 1st round pick

Despite his cry-baby, pouty antics and penchant for limp performances since being thrown to the ground by Ariza, I still think Rudy has tremendous upside if he can get his head right and his confidence back.

I want more than a protected 1st round pick for him… or let him rot until his Blazer contract expires on sheer principle.

Agreed

but I think you are confusing our old commodity, Rudy Fernandez, for the current, Evil Rudy Fernandez, that had been napalming his trade value all summer.

I would take just about anything for him before the alternative of getting nothing but a pouting holdout sitting in Spain…

Yeah, it doesn't take into account that Nic is the best player

on a good team that shouldn’t have done well, while Rudy is, at best, the second option on a team that should be doing better.

Rudy isn’t the focus of opposing teams’ defenses, or his own team’s best perimeter defender. Nic is both.

lol, I like that

As proven playing commodities, you could make a case that several of those players are better. However, Nic leads them all statistically (looking at his combination of points, rebounds, and assists), plays heavy minutes (by international standards), and is the biggest scoring threat on the floor. Maybe “most productive” would be a better word choice?

Ok, I see your point, and have to agree

And I’m probably overstating my point, as well. I think, and am open to be corrected on this, that the reason you see guys like that as offensive options ahead of Batum from time to time has to do with the team-oriented style of play that characterizes international play, so maybe the case I’m trying to make isn’t all that strong.

However, in terms of their rank as an offensive weapon on their respective teams, it sure seems like Nic is quite a bit ahead of Rudy. Defenses should be keying in on that, which would make Nic’s role on his team more difficult, hence, despite similar numbers, Nic is probably still doing better.

is that the word on the street in Europe?

Andy Miller (Rudy’s US agent) threatened to poison the well re: the Portland organization in Europe, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Rudy’s Spanish agents are attempting to paint the Blazers in the worst possible light

I’m not realy concerned about it, because (despite Norsk’s prospect reports for the 2011 draft) the talent well from imports seems to have dried up, or at least the good ones are getting better incentives to not come over (that could change with the next CBA, if David Stern wishes it)

Worst case scenario: Jason Filippi may have to do some damage control “over there” if the Blazers want to draft and stash another Euro. I’d rather draft domestic talent at this point, at least until the new CBA is known

hugh? no here in America

I’ve been reading comments through SB Nation that quote in particular in Golden State Of Mind to be exact that comment stuck in my mind not just in Rudy’s case but in past blazer’s trade apparently.
Blazer’s are asking too much to what Rudy is actually worth (and I actually agree sorry)

OK

I can understand that, we get occasional Spanish responses and I was wondering if you were one of them. The Blazer’s GM values Rudy as a 24-25 mpg contributer on a contending team, and he’s asking for appropriate compensation

Cho doesn’t need everyone to agree with his asking price, just one other NBA GM. Clearly, Fernandez did nothing to improve his trade value by making his demands public this summer, but he has certainly played with much more fire for team Espana than he did for Portland against the Suns back in April. Hopefully that will improve his likelihood of playing for a new NBA team this fall, but Portland isn’t going to give him away, or let him out of his rookie contract

I couldn’t find it. I’m sure it’s there, but maybe it’s in spanish? I did find some interesting comments though;
1.Rudy and his agent have poisoned the well
2.Fernandez would’ve already been traded if his agent wasn’t out there poisoning the wells in small markets 3.Main point: don’t poison the "Oden well"
4. I hope that Paul Allen and the Vulancs haven’t poisoned the well
Someone’s fond of the poisoning wells analogy, but I bet you can’t guess who it is. (Hint: It wasn’t Andy Miller)

by TP.5 on Sep 3, 2010 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

OK, here are the reports

Jason Quick, podcast on WaW August 18, hour 2, (24:45-25:00)

The Fernandez camp is very frustrated, there’s been a lot of dialog, some of it has even included owner Paul Allen. Rudy Fernandez is absolutely frustrated with the Blazers right now. He doesn’t like his role he doesn’t like the system of Nate McMillian, and he will not report to the training camp of the Blazers, and he will not report during the season…Andy Miller said it’s in the Blazer’s best interest [to release Rudy from his contract] because Rudy is such a high profile player in Europe and this will send such a bad message to all the other players in Europe including Victor Claver…this will send a message that the Blazers are not reasonable, they will not work with you, they do not have a good system for foreign players. That’s the only kind of leverage that Rudy’s camp has…trying to impress upon Cho, that this will send a bad message to the rest of the international players.

More Miller
“Portland’s stance is that they have legal rights, but they can’t let this type of thing take place. If you send the message that this is how you will treat one of the most highly decorated players in Europe, why would anyone come to you?”"

Here’s
an article where Rudy’s agent “told several media outlets that Fernandez wants to play in Europe and is willing to sit out for the next two seasons, the time left on his contract with the Blazers.”

And finally, back on August 11 we have this translation from an interview that Fernandez did with Marca

Q. You have the European big teams expecting.

A. I have those assets, which are appealing and I am delighted with their interest. But now are just speculations, cause I cannot make any choice. If that was my call, I would have done it already.

Q. And your decision would be?

A. If I could return to Europe, I would be delighted.

Ask and you will (eventually) receive. Like I said, it ’s common knowledge. Perhaps you were on vacation in mid-August?

more miller- stil no threat

miller says rudy will sit out- maybe a threat pertaning to rudy but nothing to do with “Andy Miller (Rudy’s US agent) threatened to poison the well”

rudy would go back to europe and make 10 times more and be the star of his team- still no threat.

You don't understand?

When an agent publically says, “This could send a bad message,” he is sending that message right then and is threatening to make a bigger scene in the future. There is no twist; this was agent speak for, “I will make this even uglier.”
When the fine happened, the chatter stopped because the not-so-subtle message from the NBA (not the Blazers) to the agent was clear, “Stop messing with the Euro market, little feller, and do so now.”

I did ask but all I got was a bunch of quotes that don’t say anything about him (Miller) doing anything to “poison the well”. It sounds like he’s telling the blazers they’re poisoning the well themselves to me

by TP.5 on Sep 4, 2010 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Here's what I originally wrote that you objected to
Andy Miller (Rudy’s US agent) threatened to poison the well re: the Portland organization in Europe, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Rudy’s Spanish agents are attempting to paint the Blazers in the worst possible light

I didn’t say that Miller had “poisoned the well” but that he had issued a threat to Cho and the Blazers. Then I said “I wouldn’t be surprised” if Rudy’s European agents are attempting to paint Portland in the worst possible light.

Andy Miller is Rudy’s American rep, he talks with Quick and other NBA writers and spreads his version of “the story” to make his client look like a victim of broken promises. But Miller isn’t going to be interviewed in Spain or any European country, Fernandez has Spanish reps who take care of that, and unfortunately they don’t care if he says things that are inflammatory re: his employer in the US. Finally, the NBA had to send a 25k message and that got their attention.

But in effect, the “well poisoning” has already been done. Each time Ferandez has been interviewed by Marca during the last few years, the name “Portland Trail Blazers” has been a part of the story, The characterization has been negative, for the most part, and there has been little or no opportunity for Blazer execs (or Nate) to defend the organization’s position. That’s not what Marca is after, anyway. They wanted Rudy to tell his Spanish fans what he’s been up to and how things are going with his career—and Fernandez has obliged—but too often he’s been too brutally honest and with the internet being what it is the translations of everything he’s “complained” about have become available to Blazer fans, a day or two later.

So the big “drama” trade demand and Miller ‘s threat that Portland’s actions will send a “message” to other European players shouldn’t come as any surprise to a plugged-in Bedger. The Marca translations have been posted and debated and we all should have a pretty good idea of where Rudy’s head is at. What bothers me is when Blazer fans feel like they still need to have his back. This website is called Blazersedge.com, not Rudyisdabomb.com. When a player (directly, and through his agent) makes it clear that he doesn’t want to fulfill his contract and be a part of the team anymore, then he’s crossed a line and (while we can all empathize with his plight, to a certain degree) I don’t understand why any Blazer fan would take his side against team management.

Now, before I’m accused of drinking a red sweet liquid let me just say that I’ve written critically about Nate, Paul Allen, KP and other Blazer players, for years. I’ve been accused of “hating on” Travis Outlaw, Patty Mills, KP and even LMA in just the last 12 months. (When critical thought is reduced to “hate speech” then I fear for our country, but I digress) I have no personal animosity towards Fernandez, I thoroughly enjoyed watching him during his rookie year (I coined the term “Spanish Air-mada” etc) but I’ve been warning Blazer fans since the day he was signed to not expect a long-term relationship between Rudy and Portland, mostly because of Roy and the fact that the two of them should only defend SGs.

So, now when the chickens have come home to roost (so to speak) and Fernandez has run out of patience and is demanding a trade that was so easy for me to predict, the Blazers are the bad guys because he wants to be let out of his contract? And Portland fans are OK with giving Rudy another chance, after the disinterested way he played last spring and all of the “messages” that he and his agent have been sending this offseason?

Sorry. I’m a forgiving person, but Fernandez has crossed the line; I’m on Bill Schonley’s side of this debate. If a player wants out, I’m not going to beg him to reconsider of leave the light on for him. I’m moving on and I fully expect the team to be better off without #5 in the future

not to mention

if Paul Allen wants a 2nd rounder, he’ll just buy one

top 15 or nothing for Rudy, that’s what and Rich have to be thinking

That obviously means Rudy will occupy a roster spot as a top-15 pick is not happening.

Does the team let Rudy compete for time with their $34M FA acquisition? Even if Rudy were to outplay WM in pre-season, which seems doubtful even if Rudy shows up, it would be very shortsighted of the team to give Rudy Wes’ minutes for any reason other than showcasing him for trade purposes. There is no future in Rudy.

Rudy is going to rot on the bench. Rudy is a whiner, but he’s right to feel like he no longer has a role on this team. Blazers have totally botched this with a lot of help from Rudy and his agent. I’m not sure at this point if the best outcome wouldn’t be cash and assurance that he’ll play in Europe instead of on the L@kers, Spurs, Suns ect. I doubt that feeling will be shared by many but the offers aren’t getting better and I doubt Cho is turning down offers that improve the team. Is it really worth the “drama” to have Rudy as a 4th option at SG?

Not in my book.

Ultimately, I prefer a stable team on the floor and the minutes going to players who want to be here and who fit. Letting Rudy sit on the bench simply takes a slot away from another player who can use the minutes to improve, and who will be here downstream. Rudy, at this point, appears to be a two year player who will be gone now – or later, but still gone.

And the problem I see in trading him is that every other team may see the same thing. We tend to assume that the NBA is the only option – when we know that Rudy can pick up $5 million or so a year in Europe. And this indicates that for an NBA team to complete with such a contract, they’d have to offer the same thing. And that makes them look not only at the role he will play now for them on his rookie contract, but whether or not, once that contract expires, they’d be willing to pay him $5 million a year to keep him around. And if you’re not sure about that – then you probably aren’t going to give up much in trade value to get him.

Yeah, he's a tough sell

All we as Blazer fans can hope for is that his play in Turkey has re-opened a few eyes around the NBA, and there is at least one GM/team who is willing to take on that risk. The “perfect situation” for Rudy to thrive and find happiness on another NBA roster is a pretty narrow pigeon-hole for Cho to aim at—it’s going to necessary for the other team (who is interested in Rudy) to make him the same kind of “promises” that Portland did back in 2008, and then hope that he buys into their system, etc

With the lockout looming, it’s even more of a hard sell because if I was a Euro BB player, I’d rather be signed up to guaranteed money with a European league team and playing “over there” in the fall of 2011

Hasn’t happened yet. I salute Cho for trying to make the best deal possible and for not knuckling-under in July-August when Rudy and his agent turned up the heat. I have no idea what Rich and Paul will eventually “settle for” in exchange for Rudy, but from the rumors that we’ve heard so far, they aren’t going to give him away for a late first rounder (something they can buy for 3 mil, just about any June) or let him out of his contract.

The ball is in Rudy’s court, and it’s up to him to report to fall camp on time, otherwise he’ll be suspended and fined. I really hope a deal is reached before this occurs, for Nate and the player’s sake. They don’t need to be answering Rudy-related questions as they’re preparing for the season.

Does the team let Rudy compete for time with their $34M FA acquisition?

If he shows up to fall camp he’ll be competing with everyone for playing time. If he doesn’t, then Matthews and Bayless will be competing with Brandon and the rookie guards. “Basketball decisions” will have to be made re: playing time and rotations, no matter who is on the roster and who is healthy. I certainly don’t expect Fernandez to receive more PT if he’s on the team this fall, and I suspect he’ll be just as unhappy as he was last year about that. Like you said, his future is not in Portland.

Blazers have totally botched this with a lot of help from Rudy and his agent.

I’ve written a lot about this in the past, and I’m not going to rehash it all again. We know that Andy Miller met with KP in December and requested a trade. We also learned from Jason Filippi in March that there was a deal on the table for Rudy but Paul Allen refused to OK it. After what happened to Penn in March it’s not hard to see where Paul and Kevin were not seeing eye-to-eye and whatever the proposal was involving Rudy at midseason it wasn’t juicy enough for the owner.

KP was eventually fired, Cho was hired as GM and the Fernandez mess is now up to Rich to clean up. I suspect Allen has given him a minimum required “return” for Rudy and Cho is doing his best to deliver—with no help from Andy Miller and Fernandez who have narrowed the list of NBA teams down to a few and threatened to sit out.

So, if all of this leads you to believe that the Blazer’s have botched the Rudy situation then, fine. They’re not perfect. I was advocating flipping Rudy last offseason, because I felt that he would eventually chafe re: his role and demand to be traded. (Right on schedule) I don’t envy Cho and I certainly wouldn’t want his job, and I hope that he’ll the guide the front office into better lines of communication and decision-making so “situations like this” won’t get out of hand again, in the future.

The moral: consolidation trades aren’t always a bad thing, and delays can be deadly

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
