Blazersedge Scrubdown Round 3, Matchup 1

We are up to the semi-finals of the Blazersedge Scrubdown...three head-to-head matchups that will determine the finalists.  One of those finalists will be crowned Portland's favorite not-quite-star-level Blazer.  The voting was tight in every second round race.  Let's see who advances and who has to go home.

To add extra interest to this round in addition to your vote, cast clearly in the subject line of your comment, we'd like you to answer the following questions (if you would):

  1. Which of these players is better overall?
  2. Which of these players was more valuable to the Portland teams they played on?
  3. Which of these players would you rather have on this year's team?

Note that while we're interested in hearing the reasoning behind your answers, that reasoning doesn't bind you to a vote.  You're free to vote for any reason, even if that means saying Player A was better in all three categories but you're still going with Player B for other reasons or just because...neener-neener!

The first matchup of the third round:  Darnell Valentine versus Danny Young.  Vote for your favorite below!

Danny Young

They seem fairly even to me in my memory. Valentine was a starter for a while and probably a better defender but Young was a nice steady back up who wasn’t explosive but didn’t have a lot of weaknesses.
I would rather have Young because he would be a calming influence off the bench.

Second question

Valentine was probably more valuable in his early years with the Blazers since he was the starting PG and had a larger role running the offense and getting the team off to a good start. Young just had to hold serve until Porter or Drexler got back into the game.

Valentine to all 3

V was a starter, steady all the time and would fit great on our current team.

Darnell in a landslide

I hated it everytime Adelman put Danny Young in. He just seemed to be counterproductive on offense.

Danny Young

Underrated, solid backup who could play both guard positions. I liked it when Coach Adelman put him in. He was good. Darnell had big thighs.

D. Cupid!

have to vote for Valentine cuz he’s named after my birthday :)
and he was an Olympian. i remember thinking it was really cool that that guy with huge thighs from the Olympics was a Blazer.

I'd still honk once!

Valentine

1. I think Valentine would beat Young one-on-one.
2. Danny Young was a decent role player on some great teams.
3. Valentine because of his D.

2 out of three means I vote for Valentine.

Darnell Valentine please

1. Darnell was a starter here and for other teams. Although I liked Danny he was pretty much a career backup.
2. Darnell was strong physically and had to be mentally strong to distribute the ball to guys who all thought they should be the #1 scorer on the team.
3. I would love to have Darnell compete with Miller for the starting job. I think that Miller is a better player but DV would have been a great backup.

Also, I ran into Darnell three different times around the city while he played here. On each occasion he graciously took a few minutes of his time to talk to me and my friends.

Hey, you can’t change the rules mid competition. I mean asking people to answer questions based on perception of a specific players Skill, Value and hypothetical value to todays team? Just sayin’ last round people were voting based on criteria as obscure as “I never saw the other guy play”, “I don’t remember the other guy” or even, “This guy ultimately garnered this guy in an eventual trade”.

It’s a little too late to apply real criteria.

That being said, IMO Valentine wins all 3 applied criteria.

I know....

…I’m just being a malcontent….it’s a difficult operation to run. I mean ask Blazer fans who their favorite " not quite star" is? That’s kind of difficult to define and apply anyway. It’s like taking a kid into a 33 flavor Ice Cream shop and saying, Outside of Chocolate, Vanilla and 17 other flavors…what Ice Cream do you like best?

We are trying to define which “mediocre” we like best. That isn’t really easy to do with a fanbase. Not going to be able to make everyone happy.

Young

I’m too young to remember Valentine and only voted for him in the past because his name is bad-arse. I do have fond memories of Danny Young though, and there’s always “the shot”.

Valentine

Valentine was a better overall player, with the kind of speed that kills in the current format. Also his work ethic was beyond anything on the current roster…
Young may have been more valuable because of the roster he played with and his sixth man role on that team.
Valentine would be the guy I’d want to see on this team, partly because he’d fill a role that has a weakness on this roster and partly because his work ethic would hopefully rub off. Also, he always got it to the right man…and made his teammates better..that could pay dividends for GO and LMA as they are sometimes not given the ball when they are in great position to score…

Danny boy

1. Valentine
2. Valentine
3. Probably a close call for me. Young feels like the steady backup PG the team has been needing for the last few years. Valentine may fit better looking ahead.

That said: still voting for Danny Young. I’m hypnotized by the perfectly round head.

3. Valentine . . ? . . I don’t remember Young as much, since he was a back up and Valantine was a starter. Seems like Valentine could explode for a big game every now and then.

Danny Young

because when I see those two names, his brings the biggest smile. (Probably because of the whole team, not him).

Every team needs a role player, particularly a backup pg who knows his place and isn’t pouting for more minutes. He did what he was asked to do game after game.

Answers #1 probably Valentine #2 I have no idea #3 hmmmm – I like Young’s FT record – .911 one season, several seasons over .800 I’ll choose him for that consistency.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
