Let Junk Burn - 09-03-2010
So when the party ain't jumpin' like it used to let it burn..
The daily Junk Drawer (JD) fanpost is the place for true off-topic conversation and people's random thoughts. Its purpose was simple from its infancy; a place where people could come and chat about all of the "whatevers" that didn't fit with the rest of the site and even be loose in terms of byplay and humor. The goal was to foster community...to let people who wanted to get to know each other outside of what they could discern from the strictly basketball posts. We've had happy JD's, sad ones, drawers that looked like a sharing circle, drawers that resembled open mic night at the comedy club... and people have really become a family here.
So if you have a one-off thought, consider posting it here. The rules about importance and significance of the topic are suspended in each JD but keep some of these basic rules in mind:
- Ad hominem attacks and swearing will never be tolerated
- Remember everything you write is visible publicly
- Don't use the JD call out or talk about users from other BEdge threads.
- Be mindful that every image posted slows down the JD, so use discretion in how many you post (you can also link to images you want to share so that they will not overwhelm the JD). When you do post images, put something in the subject line of the comment so that the image can be minimized.
This junk is dedicated to people finding their way in life (if it requires leaving something behind you, just let it burn)

Poor guy marries barbaric rich girl.
On night of wedding guy tells dog to bring him water with hands/paws. Dog doesn’t. He kills dog. Repeat with cat and horse. Then he tells wife. Wife brings him water immediately. Wife tamed. Live happily ever after.
The end.
Reminds me of the 1001 nights story about how if you beat your wife you will have a good household.

Plenty, actually.
There’re Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Cambodians, peeps from the Middle East and everything, but I haven’t met anyone who speaks Vietnamese, except one of my teachers.
a lot the Vietnamese guys I knew growing up didn't it speak it.
it seems like a lot of families don’t use it at home once they move here, which is very sad.

These guys are playing with Dylan. I love them and I especially love this song. The really strong female singer isn’t part of the permanent band but she is freaking amazing.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
“Annan Waters” is my favorite song on that album, but that one is good also. Both of the female voices they brought in for that album are great.
i like The Rake’s Song and The Drowned the best.

as I said above, I’ve seen this band lots and lots of times. When we went to see them in Astoria earlier this year they were all just walking around town. They sometimes recognize us in the crowd. At least Colin Meloy does.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
I went to high school with her. Middle school, too. But we weren’t friends, so it doesn’t really mean much.
yeah, they're both really good.
and Shara Worden(the more powerful singer in that song above, she plays “The Queen” throughout the album). That whole album is pretty great and works really well as a concept album.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
I failed at this
after my parenthesis I got lost. I meant to say that Shara Worden is really awesome live. She just rocks out like crazy during her parts on the album. And she’s really cute, too.

Watching GI JOE; I dunno why
It is crazy how bad the FX are.
They are movie-made-for-the-ScyFy-channel-bad.
#52
I wanted it to be good
I really did. I swear, they were trying to ruin all of my good childhood memories.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
I am expecting it to be completely awful
So anything above that will be a surprise.
I think I will be disappointed still. It’s so CHEAP and BORING so far. 20 mins in.
#52
And maybe it's because I haven't seen STEP UP yet
But I do not buy Channing Tatum as a leading man. He is cardboard.
#52
You try to just move it to the side
And it rips. Comes undone.
That is Channing Tatum as a leading man.
#52
20 mins is about the time we gave up
my buddy and I were drinking on the strip all day long and then went to see it at like 1am in Vegas and STILL couldn’t enjoy it. It’s so bad you can’t even make fun of how bad it is. It makes you speechless with it’s stupidity.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
the intrigue! oh my!
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
GEEZ SPOILERS
I never liked that lady who is the Baroness in the movie, whatsherface, Sienna Miller… she bugs me a lot in everything I’ve seen her in, and how she is famous (or was) and in all those tabloids just because Jude Law schtupped the ugly nanny.
#52
Oh my goodness!
They were gonna get married?! But she is so evil now!
My stars, what has happened over the last 4 years to change her so?
#52
It's not like I give a damn about the GI Joe canon
I have no idea what the “real” backstory is anyways.
Just… don’t make it dumb. It ain’t too much to ask.
#52
They had maybe the best subject matter to work with
And this is what they did with it.
They just knew that people like me would see it regardless of how bad it was. Heck, they could have made a diorama out of a shoe box and old GI Joe toys, put a camera on it for 90 minutes, and I probably still would have gone to see it.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
I loved GI Joe as a kid
I still got my Snake Eyes toy on my desk, along with r2d2 and boba fett and the Empire version of Han Solo.
But I never felt THAT attached to the series. Once I heard the movie was awful, and it LOOKED awful, I didn’t feel the need to go see it.
But for “free”, I’ll watch it.
#52
I ended up watching it for free, too
The reviews were too terrible for me to see it in the theater, but I was sad. I so rarely go out to the movies, and I was all jazzed when I heard about it.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
I'm not sure I'd seen her in anything else
But she seemed just like a carbon copy of any other skinny, nondescript not-really-an-actress.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
Oh lordy
There is Joseph Gordon Levitt waltzing in.
I forgot he was Cobra Commander or something. So him and Duke were buddies now as well? Great.
#52
Ok
If I’m actually gonna see this movie all the way through, I need a strong drink, and to be playing 2K10 at the same time.
#52
That was the original idea of the producer (who is also responsible for Matrix, Harry Potter, and after his time at Warner the Transformers movies)
He wanted to make a movie about advanced military weapons, a bit like the Iron Man franchise. Some buddy at Hasbro suggested he use the G.I. Joe franchise.

Man
So he’s responsible for 2 god-awful movies, one franchise handed to him on a silver platter, and for ruining the Transformers?
He prolly has so much money that it ain’t even funny.
#52
PLUS GI Joe
There is a lot of money in badness.
I hate hate hate hate the design of the Transformers so much. I always blamed Michael Bay for that though, thinking they needed to “update” it.

Beverly Hills Cop iv?????

He didn't make it
But he helped release it, at least.
He MAY have produced it, but I don’t think so. I am not sure if it was made first, then Peter Jackson’s WINGNUT PRODUCTIONs got it, or what, but Peter Jackson was involved in some manner.
He didn’t direct it, though.
#52
yeah, Jackson "produced" it, basically meaning he gave 'em some money to make it big and get his name on it

But I know that’s what the Halo footage got turned in to. Also, the first 8 minutes of the Halo movie are on youtube

I've never played Halo, so I dunno much about it
Do the aliens look similar at all? The majority, 90% I’d say, of the FX in District 9 were the alien FX… does that fit Halo?

not really at all.
unless they were going to take a different turn with Halo for the movies.

The weapons were developed for a Halo movie
I don’t think it’s as much actually footage as sets and props

Some of the Halo universe plays in a "New Mombasa" in Africa. So that might make sense.
Or for the laboratory scenes that are underground.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Well the props and weaponry, how real they seem
In District 9… them being repurposed from a dead Halo project seems likely, since Peter Jackson’s FX company, and Wingnut, were involved with both, no?
#52
Yeah, and Independence Day cost $75 million which was considered outrageous at the time
They should have used a director like that who can work on a budget. He literally used mirrors for some scenes in Stargate in addition to CGI effects to make the armies look bigger.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
That's exactly what I was thinking, about the director
I am assuming he didn’t even think of trying to use the budget better to make it look good for the price, and just relied on the effects teams to fill everything in.
I mean, the amount of FX on the screen is a crapload for most of these shots, but it all looks bad. There’s no real reason to have it ALL be FX, use the FX better.

Unleash the fury!
Yet, on a side note, I felt a bit bad for t4l, since that thread derailed for numerous reasons — as even I went off topic — which is due in part to Dave’s inclusion of Rudy Fernandez in the first place. Practically speaking, Fernandez is gone by the regular season; thus, the question would’ve been better posed with Wesley Matthews in Fernandez’s stead.
I just got sick of two4's attitude in that thread
He is a knowledgeable guy but he was just condescending and dismissive in that thread and it pissed me off. I understand it is highly likely Rudy is gone by training camp and that does make that particular thread a theoretical discussion rather than a practical one. I was enjoying that theoretical discussion early on though (the stuff with momo) then when I came back it was a mess, which I put down to two4larue calling Dave out for posting it.
I guess I just wanted a thread in which Rudy hate wasn’t the default position. Maybe I shouldn’t have taken all that frustration out on two4 but he’s not my favourite poster so I’m not gonna be feeling too sorry for him.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |

| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
Nah, he's not a bully.
A bit patronizing at times, sure. I can also be that way on occasion, though, so it’s hard for me to hate on him ’cause of that.
Difference is, you'll just tell someone that they are wrong if that's what you think
two4 seems determined to put people down when they don’t agree with his perspective, with the most famous example being the scouting cred thing regarding Batum. I like people to be straight with me if they disagree with what I’m saying but I find people who consider their opinions superior for no apparent reason intolerable.
Perhaps I’m being unfair to the guy, but its how I feel and I feel no need to pull punches in my current mood.

><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><>
Yeah, he's actually one of the better overall posters.
I don’t even think this is much of a slip-up, either. Once that thread dies, he’ll move onward and upward.
In the main page threads and fan posts, I often like the back-and-forth between ...
two4larue and BlazerFanSince1970. Since they’re both long-time basketball fans, it’s interesting to see their perspective on things. Yet, having watched the sport way back into the ‘70s can sometimes be a detriment, with one example being t4l’s suggestion of playing Dante Cunningham at the 3. This isn’t the early-1980s — which is around when the three-point line was introduced — when someone such as Calvin Natt can start at small forward.
As it was, in 1980-1981, 1981-1982,1982-1983, and 1983-1984 — which are the four seasons that Natt played extensively for Portland at the 3 — Natt hit a combined total of 11 for 53 from beyond the arc. Heck, the Trail Blazers itself shot only 16.9%, 20.7%, 23.3%, and 19.4% from downtown as a team in those seasons, respectively. It was a different era, pure and simple. In today’s game, Natt would’ve been an undersized 4 — which is what he actually ended up becoming after getting dealt to Denver in 1984 — such as, oh, Carl Landry or someone of that nature.
I'm with you on that
two4 and BFS have a lot of interesting info from an era of basketball I have never seen or studied in any detail.

To properly chop down well-established boundaries. It just adds to the beauty of the finished product
z
My proposal for USA Basketball's lineup in the medal rounds
Billups, Gordon, Durant, Iguodala, Odom. With Loe being 1st big off the bench. Chauncey is our most experienced hand, and he, Gordon, and Durant are our best shooters… Which we’ll need when we face almost 100% zone D in the single-elimination games. I think Rose would be a better scoring guard off the bench than opening/crunch time floor general, and Billups’ shooting is more than likely to improve
z
Yeah, I'd go with Lamar Odom, Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, Eric Gordon, and Chauncey Billups as the ...
starting lineup. Off the bench, I’d go with Kevin Love, Danny Granger, Russell Westbrook, Stephen Curry, and Derrick Rose. Yes, I’d use Westbrook as a 3 in international play; he could do it.
I agree
Gordon probably could too… If Durant can hack it at the 4, they can for sure do it. The question is how much Coach K wants to mess with lineup continuity
z
Eric Gordon and Steph Curry should split all the minutes at the 2, since they're deadly deep threats.
The reason I suggest Russell Westbrook as the backup 3 — which’d be instead of Rudy Gay — is that he has the length (6’ 7.75" wingspan), the defensive and rebounding prowess, and the slashing/cutting ability to play that spot in FIBA competition.
We need to rescue Conley from that hellish franchise
and teach him to play better defense.
Yeah, I still want Mike Conley. Sigh.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
He's gotten a lot better at 3pt shooting
He would be a decent long term option. I just am worried the Grizzlies value him to high since they only have 6 guys who can play
z
He is their version of LA
Fans pretty much hate the guy. The team has experimented with Mayo at the 1 (horrible failure) so they would need a PG back in any deal.
Miller should do it.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
Bayless should do it
So conley has a year to learn from Miller. But if that won’t work, Miller should do it
z
Glad you came around on that one
I think Bayless would do it from a fans perspective but I doubt the FO agrees. Miller gives them the inside run at the 8th seed IMO.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
Memphis is one of two clubs that can use Andre Miller, with Charlotte as the other.
Here’s a trade proposal in which Miller is dealt for Mike Conley, Jr., with Sacramento also invovled so Portland can take back somebody with a non-guaranteed contract (i.e., Darnell Jackson) — who’d subsequently be waived — instead of a superfluous player with a guaranteed salary (i.e., Darrell Arthur).
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2erwmxl
The other option is to trade Jerryd Bayless to the Grizzlies for Conley, Jr., with Rudy Fernandez and Jeff Pendergraph going to the Chicago Bulls for a future first-round draft pick — which’d hopefully be the Charlotte pick — and James Johnson heading off to Memphis to complete the three-team trade.
I'd do either
But I’d be happier with the first.
Conley isn’t ideal but he seems like the best option that might be available. Doubt many people would be in favour of a Conley for Miller move though.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
I'd prefer to move Jerryd Bayless for Mike Conley, Jr. myself.
That’d also mean finally pulling the trigger on Rudy Fernandez — as well as parting with Jeff Pendergraph — for salary purposes, but I’d be fine with that.
In that scenario I assume Miller starts and Conley get 18 minutes, give or take, as his backup
Or would you make a further move to free up the starting job for Conley? Miller is probably the better option short term, so keeping him till the end of the season then declining his team option might make sense. Perhaps Johnson could deal with a backup role at that point or more likely we could use some exception money to sign a veteran backup.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
I still feel that Gerald Wallace over Rudy Gay should've occurred. While Wallace reportedly ...
didn’t do too well in practice — http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/olybb/news/story?id=5417438 — he’d’ve been a better fit than Gay come tournament time.
Danny Granger as a stretch 4 backing up Kevin Durant is all right, but consequently ...
I’d’ve wanted Gerald Wallace as the backup 3 behind Andre Iguodala. As the roster sits, though, I argue that Russell Westbrook is a better option than Rudy Gay as the backup 3. In a way, it’s kind of similar to my argument that Tryeke Evans should be a 3 in the NBA.
'Reke's not a 1, that's for sure
And him playing the 3 makes a lot of sense since he’s basically a fullback. My only objection would be that a lot of his game is built on overpowering people, which he probably couldn’t do at the 3
z
It is ridiculous how many 1's and 3's were part of the trials and how many actually made it onto the roster
Even in FIBA competition having a traditional SG and PF is a good idea.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
Eric Gordon and Steph Curry are fine at shooting guard — for tha's Gordon's ...
natural position, while Curry has the marksmanship to own thrive in that role — also, the lack of natural 5s is what has forced natural 4s (i.e., Lamar Odom and Kevin Love) into playing center. If Brook Lopez hadn’t’ve pulled out of the tryouts — which was due to mononucleosis of all things — then it wouldn’t look so dire with Tyson Chandler as the lone true pivotman.
It has not been a problem
But that is mainly due to the huge talent discrepancy between USA and the rest of the teams in the tournament. I think having one natural 2 and one natural 5 and being this successful is incredible. Just shows how many guys opted out of the program this year.
Also, LA would be very good in FIBA competition. His range is probably right out to the 3pt line. Unfortunate for him that they are moving to NBA dimensions.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
Gonna go basketball related for a minute
Bayless has been compared to Lou Williams before. I know AK mentioned the similarities and I’ve seen it elsewhere as well. The similarity between the two at the same age is striking .
My question – If you knew Bayless would continue on a similar arc and in the season after next would have a season of 14/4/3 on 47% shooting and 34% from 3pt range, with lower usage (21%) but still average defense and PG skills, do you keep him? Is that a guy you want starting next to Roy?
I’m torn but I think if this is Bayless’ ceiling then we should move him because even if he continues to follow Williams’ career arc, he isn’t a true floor spreader nor does he make up for Roy’s defensive deficiencies. Still it made me have a rethink (Almost flip-flopped on Bayless for about the 16th time…)
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
I agree
Lou Williams is not a PG, he’s a bench scorer. That’s why the Sixers drafted Jrue Holliday, who’s going to be real good real soon (many of his struggles last year were because he was the youngest player in the NBA and playing point guard). If Bayless is fine with being a 6th/7th man then I’m fine with keeping him, but PGOTF might be a little too high-ceiling for him
z
I think it depends on how much Bayless can improve this season
He’s got a more defined role heading into the season. He’s clearly the back up PG and he’ll play some minutes at the 2. I think consistent minutes and an established role will help his game.
Can I get an Armon?
Oh for sure
But he’s going to have to show me a lot fairly quickly if I’m to raise my projection for him. True floor generals are rare, and most bench PGs are there to initiate offense through themselves first and others second (i.e. Dragic, Nate Rob, Kyle Lowry, Lou Williams). Based on what he’s shown us so far, Bayless seems to be better suited for the latter role than the former
z
I would never call him a floor general
but I don’t think we need our PGotF to be a true floor general because Roy will be a playmaker also.
Can I get an Armon?
I agree
But AK makes a great point about their games kinda conflicting. Bayless isn’t likely to develop into the spot shooter we need playing opposite Roy, as his game is mostly drawing contact at the rim and having the ball in his hands. As a result, it’s hard to imagine him and Roy starting or closing together
z
The final nail in the coffin for me
was that Bayless and Roy both get the vast majority of their assists the same way – on kick outs to jumpshooters.
I’d like some playmaking diversity in our backcourt.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
Fasho
Someone who can dish to the open big after penetration would be nice, GO loves catching the ball wide open directly under the hoop
z
that's an interesting take I hadn't heard before
I’m not sure what to think of playmaking diversity at the moment. It seems like an assist is an assist in most cases (save lucky shots or lucky passes). I guess the primary advantage would be increasing pressure on defenses.
Can I get an Armon?
who hit post way too early
Timbo has done a bit of discussion on this topic, and assists by their lonesome are a fairly useless statistic. Never does a team win by “out-assisting” their opponent. The eFG based on assists is what matters. Our eFG at the rim is higher than our eFG from 3, without taking into account all our low-efficiency assisted midrange jumpers. As a result, assists at the rim are critical to generating more effocent offense, especially since we’re supposed to have at or near All Star level bigs
z
I just think
if you throw 10 passes out of the lane for a jumper and 10 passes to a big man under the hoop, you will score more in the second instance.
Not so much about an assist being an assist, its about how likely our PG is to give someone the ball in good scoring position.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
Jrue Holiday would have been a great pick up in the last draft
Even better than Collison possibly. Jrue could easily end up being a taller version of Collison, although likely with less playmaking flair.
In any case I agree with the Holiday>Williams as a starting PG argument.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
Yeah, here's what I believe to be my most recent comment to ULC about that subject.
“I expect Jerryd Bayless to up his game statistically next season, albeit in the mold of Louis Williams — who performed better than Bayless in PER, TS%, eFG%, 3PT%, and AST% at a lower USG% last season, with only the ability to draw fouls and age in Jay-Bay’s favor — yet, that improvement won’t change how his dribble-drive game is a poor stylistic fit alongside Brandon Roy in the backcourt.”
http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=0&p1=bayleje01&y1=2010&p2=willilo02&y2=2010
http://www.blazersedge.com/2010/8/22/1636967/greg-oden-what-does-he-need-to-be#45011972
So, if Jerryd Bayless’ production plays out like that next season, the Portland Trail Blazers basically have a 6th/7th man combo guard rather than a starting point guard of the future. From there, the Blazer brass must determine if that’s what it wants long-tem out of that roster spot and, moreover, will Bayless be content with such an ancillary role.
by AK1984 on Sep 3, 2010 3:55 AM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
What do you think the minimum level of "point guard-ness" will be required for the PGotF?
Miller’s assist percentage was 30 last season and Bayless was at 22.
Maybe a combo guard who can hit the 3 is just fine as the PGotF.
Can I get an Armon?
I'd be happy with a mid 20s AST% if its coupled with lower usage so
the guy won’t be taking touches away from Oden or Horford in the post.
Oh and defense from that position is a must for me.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
Don't get me started on Horford
Dude was the best player and pro prospect on those FLA teams, Noah just had the hair, volume, and pedigree to overshadow him
z
I love Horford
Guy is incredibly underrated. Everyone says he shouldn’t have made the all-star game and I’ve heard a lot of people say he is no better than LA. Personally I think a Horford/Oden frontline is championship calibre and I also have a feeling the Hawks will have to decide between retaining him or Josh Smith.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
I'm not sure Horford/Oden is perfect
If only because there’s data saying that 2 non-shooters on the floor at the same time is a recipe for offensive disaster. But at the same time, Horford would be worlds better playing alongside a real 5 instead of masquerading as one himself, and he’s a consummate team player
z
Statistically Horford is a better jumpshooter than LA
I think LA has a harder time getting open jumpers because of how he plays, but in any case Horford can hit a 15 footer just fine from what I’ve seen.
I’m taking Horford/Oden over LA/Oden 10 times outta 10.

Is there a way to trade Aldridge for Horford?
Atlanta likes overpaying players so the contract shouldn’t be a problem
Can I get an Armon?
let's do it straight-up
I’d honestly throw Bayless in too if that’s what it took. Or throw in Rudy so they can trade Crawford to any team but the Blazers
z
Unless the Hawks make him play center for the rest of his career
I really hope he goes to a better-run team
z
I wish the Blazers were interested in him
But it seems pretty clear that LA is their guy. I’m fine with that but Horford really could take us up a level defensively.
| #11 | #7 | #9 | #15 | #52 |
Considering ATL is likely looking to dump a contract at this point, probably not.
Given that I wanted to move second year Aldridge for rookie Horford, I’m all for overpaying a bit for him. ATL would have jumped all over it 2 years ago but now, I think we probably have to at least throw in Joel. (for his contract)
I will run naked through the streets if Oden wins the MVP this season...happily.
If we had a guy who could shoot 3s as well as Bayless draws fouls
And is a plus defender, that would be a huge step. AST% isn’t a huge deal (I don’t think Blake’s was particularly high) as long as he complements Roy’s weaknesses. The funny thing is Blake would be perfect for our team if Nate didnt have such an elevated opinion of his skills.
z
If we are going the combo guard route...
I want someone who also has post entry passing and ballhandling in his skillset. Unfortunately, most combos do not possess both skills while most true points do.
I will run naked through the streets if Oden wins the MVP this season...happily.
I think Bayless sees himself as something much more than a reserve
Even if that was as a 25 minute or so 6th man type reserve.
I truly believe Bayless still holds all-star aspirations and that doesn’t tend to lead to deferring to more efficient teammates as part of a starting unit soooo I’m still thinking Bayless needs to go.

And if that’s the case, I agree with your eventual final outcome
z
This comparison has some validity
however, I see a significant difference. Brandon is a different and better player than Iguodala. He is simply a better scorer and better passer on offense. He’s in the tier of shooting guards with Wade and Bryant, which means he uses so many possessions he’s got to be involved in many “point guard things:” setting up teammates, doing the two man game with the big man, generally orchestrating the offense.
So what’s to say Bayless can’t be a poor man’s Tony Parker? Tony has exactly the same stylistic game to Bayless, down to a quickness-oriented dribble-drive game, 77% of his assists led to jumpers in his last good season, and both Ginobili and Roy seem to be stud shooting guards who might benefit from being able to catch a break once in a while and have someone else carry the offense.
Also, @Madblaze, I looked at the “assists leading to” stat, and I think the influence of the players you’re on the floor with has a much stronger influence on that than you want to admit. For example, Lou Williams, who we seem to have decided is too drive/kick oriented, gets a relatively small 60% of his assists on teammate jumpers. Look at who Jerryd’s on the floor with: Aldridge/Webster/Howard/Fernandez are his consistent running mates when he has played point guard. Those guys aren’t exactly dunking all over the place normally.

Oregon should take the Pac-10 this year I think.
On a side not I think the Cornhuskers crush everything in their path to a big 12 title and subsequent bowl victory.

Yeah that's what some people are saying. Their defense is probably the deepest in the country, so they can weather injuries better than most schools,
but I’m still hesitant to jump to conclusions about national title aspirations when our QB situation isn’t totally set. The defense is going to be stifling though.

seems like a friendly schedule, at least on first glance
would probably have to be undefeated to make an argument for the NCG though.
Yeah, and it's possible with that favorable schedule, but undefeated is a tall glass.
We do have Texas at home this year though, so it’s possible. The NCG is a goal of theirs. We’ll see. They gotta beat the Huskies first, and figure out their QB situation.

They're actually looking really good at that position. They have 2 All-Amercan candidtes in Steinkuhler and Jared Crick.
But yeah, ANY team would feel the loss of Suh.

winning the Big 12 is probably more realistic
and I agree with you, I don’t see how Washington can cope. The contrast between Oregon’s performance against Ohio State and Pac-10 defenses was really stark. And if anything Nebraska’s got a better defense than tOSU.
Yeah, winning the big 12 is my hope this year.
However a NCG would be oh so sweet!
I’m just stoked I have a good team again after so many years of mediocrity.

The OSU game will be within 12. The UW game will be close to start, with Locker and the Huskies pulling away big time in the second half.

OSU is my fav Pac-10 team, and I will be rooting for them this year,
but their schedule is absolute murder. It’s gotta be the toughest in the country. 3 top 10 teams they play? Where was Oregon ranked? Not to mention the minefield that is the Pac-10. I just don’t see how they come out on top.

sorry animal people
but I had a good time at Barnum and Bailey’s circus last night.
I did notice there was a lot less animals than there was last year. I wonder if it is related to the picketing, or just cutbacks or what? Anyway, it is mostly chinese acrobats, and they were pretty good.

that’s interesting to hear. I protested the Circus at the Rose Garden once. I feel strongly about it, especially big cats and elephants, but the protesting was uncomfortable. I’m more of a behind the scenes kind of volunteer-er.
yeah, I don’t think people should be abusing animals. It makes me cringe thinking about it. I hope the protesting is making a difference….but I’ll still go because I think the circus can/will change their ways.

So my older brother says lots of dumb things over the years
He’s smarter than his brain takes him, but his brain takes him really dumb. When we were hanging out, he was talking about a sexual harassment training class. They played a video and showed an attractive female boss trying to hit on an employee. The employee says but we’re married and the boss lady is like ya so what? and sticks her cleavage in his face. The video guy makes the correct move and removes himself from the situation. My brother then tells me that he starts whispering to the guys around him that this guy has to be gay. Because only someone gay wouldn’t at least sorta go down that road if it was offered.
Here’s what I told him:
Hmm yeah that could be a reason.. or the guy is worried about breaking up his family and/or risking the financial damages associate with a divorce if it did come out
Here’s what I was nice enough to hold back on:
or maybe that guy is in a good relationship that he is smart enough to try to keep.
Because I didn’t want to make him cry even though he is a Laker fan and largely deserves it.

Masoli ruled eligible to play this season
Ole Miss won their appeal. Chargers trade a 7th round draft pick for Patrick Crayton. Big Ben’s suspension reduced to 4 games. Half of UNC’s team is suspended for their LSU game due to NCAA investigation. That is today’s rapid football update
z
wait they are letting Masoli play?!
and I heard about Ben. I knew from the day they gave him the suspension that it would be reduced.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

I wouldn't be a good football commissioner.
If Ben asked me for a reduction of his suspension, I’d have added an additional game.
I'm glad he can play
They let him play. They were making a moral judgement when he actually followed the rules. He’s not much different than Paulus when he went from Duke to Syracuse.
#52
WAY different
Masoli transferred because he got kicked off the team for committing a crime, not because he desperately wanted to attend grad school at ole miss
z
how they ended their career at one school has nothing to do with them following the rules to transfer as a grad student
It’s exactly the same in that regard. The rule doesn’t say anything as to why they left the last team.

Wow, thanks Momomoses
Masoli – smh. Crayton is a receiver? Big Ben – smh. Butch Davis – smh. Thanks for the update!
GOP in HD
Yeah, Crayton was the Cowboys' #2 receiver at the start of last year
But with Austin and Bryant moving ahead of him he started to get frustrated. Now the Chargers have a bit more jackson holdout insurance
z
which sucks because I drafted Jackson.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
hmm I dunno who to give up for him.
and I’ve already got kind of a lot of WRs. I don’t want to drop Jackson to pick up Crayton(especially since Jackson is sitting in my IR spot right now).
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
makes sense
I napped through my 2nd draft last night and my team autodrafted. My rankings list was not built for autodraft. I’m gonna need to work the wire hard in that league
z
yeah, my team isn't bad
but I think I’m gonna have to keep a really close eye on RBs because I only have one back up. We’ll see how it goes. I picked up Heyward-Bey on waivers yesterday since I tossed Jackson on IR. Maybe I’ll drop him again for Crayton…
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
not a bad plan
My autodraft went WR happy, and Montario Hardesty is my 3rd back. He’s out for the season with a torn ACL. We’ll see how this goes. The good news is my top 2 backs are Jones-Drew and Bradshaw
z
haha those are my top two as well!!
and auto draft loves WRs it seems. I had to let the last couple rounds go to auto and it picked up nothing but receivers. My third back is Marshawn Lynch, and he might be okay.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
Did you hear that they've implied Bradshaw is more than likely to be the number one back this year?
this is the best I can find right now, but it seemed more concrete last night.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
I like Jacobs a lot (even have his jersey)
but he struggled last year and Bradshaw is emerging as a truly incredibly RB. We’ll see if I made the right gamble in taking Bradshaw instead of Jacobs.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
that's what I worry about.
lots of goal line stands could go to Jacobs since he has that ability to just barrel through people.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
my receiving corps is out of this world: andre johnson, larry fitz, desean jackson, percy harvin, and mike williams (from tampa, one of my potential sleeper pickls)
hopefully Percy Harvin’s head doesn’t explode.
of course, with a group like that, i can’t see why it would matter.
how did you get those first 3 guys?
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
haha the funny part is he was auto drafted.
and I hope for Harvin’s sake that he does well this year and is healthy. Even though I passed on him a couple of rounds because of the fear of him missing so much time. I like the kid a lot, though.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
nice. who’d you get for RB’s though? those are important from what i remember
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"

you could probably trade Desean Jackson for a good RB or QB?
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
If I had another QB I'd maybe switch.
but I’ve got Peyton, who is almost asking for an injury at this point in his career, and McNabb, who I need for a backup. Cause I need a stronger WR after taking Jackson.

When do tickets to preseason games go on sale?
I am going to be in Portland in early October and might find a way to make it to a game.
You can often get preseason tickets at a decent price through the resale site, I believe.
Since people often don’t show up and just sell their tickets.

Authorities say a Helena teen sent out a text message last week in search of pot, but instead of contacting the drug dealer, he hit a wrong number and inadvertently sent the message to Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton.
The detective spotted two teenage boys and a man at the store and called the phone number three times to make sure he had the right person. Dutton said when the detective showed the teens his badge, their faces turned white and their knees began to wobble. One of the boys even fainted.
montana is still the wild west, see:
No citations were issued after the parents of the boys, who were 15 and 16, got involved.
“Trying to buy drugs is a crime, but it’s probably worse that they had to face their parents,” Dutton said.

Facebook scaled so well because at first it was only Harvard, then only Ivy League, then only US colleges, then international colleges on request, and then invitation-only friends. Now it’s more stable and tested out than just about any other social site, from Twitter to SBN to Digg. It’s just never down.

Where at Dollar's Corner?
Haven’t been there in forever. What spot does gigs there? (Not that I can be there for it).
The one and only tavern on that corner – used to be called Dollars’ Corner. I’m not sure what it’s called now. The regulars were upset with us that we weren’t really a country band – but we were a good enough rock and blues band to get over, plus we played about a dozen country songs, so they let us live.

I feel like I have a pretty good grasp of what’s happening on any given basketball play or baseball at bat. I’m have some confidence in my eye to evaluate players in both basketball and baseball. I have little idea what the hell is happening on any given football play.
I'm just now starting to understand what's happening on the football field

Ripping CDs to iTunes is so tedious.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
Ugh iTunes
I use WMP for ripping to lossless WMA (it’ll grab track info and cover art), then I give that whole set of files to itunes, which will convert it down to a smaller size automatically.
That gives me all the original lossless quality of the CD, gives itunes a copy, and I don’t have to use their software to rip CD’s.
ooooh that sounds nice, but complicated.
and not the kind of thing I can do while I’m workin. I just use iTunes to make AAC files that I toss on my iPod for travelling (even locally via bus or bike). At home I use my ps3 as a cd player and my speakers for CDs.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
For home use, I always use lossless quality files
I use Windows Media, others use APE and other formats, they’re all fine though. It’s nice because I know I never have to pull that CD out ever again, and can put it into storage. I’ll always have an original quality file available.
It is more complicated though. These days I keep two copies of my music: One lossless copy, and one copy converted to high quality MP3’s. I don’t let iTunes encode anything anymore, I just give iTunes the MP3’s I want it to use.
Ah, yeah.
I’ll probably have to get into that eventually. For now I’m just trying to get all the MP3s I lost when my Dell died back onto this computer. I have about 350 CDs and only got through less than half before I gave up a couple weeks back. Trying to rip as much as I can while I work today.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
And the key is the important lesson: It's worth having a cheap external hard drive to back it all up
Or have an online backup source, which is nice since it’s outside the house, but has a monthly fee for storage space and/or bandwidth.
Yeah, I bought a 1TB external as soon as that happened.
the half that I’ve already put on this computer is on that hard drive.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
Depending on how the CD is mastered, you don't even have lossless quality to begin with...
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Honestly my hearing isn't good enough to distinguish anything above 256 AAC
I do hear the “missing” quality on some 128 MP3 tracks w/o being able to really pin it down, maybe the heights or some compression in silent parts of the track. And for classical tracks, it’s really more about the recording and mastering than the format it’s stored in. I do have friends who are classically trained musicians who complain, but I just don’t have that hearing although I have most definitely no hearing loss. It probably comes down to personal taste, like the discussion we had about the size of boxes recently.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Yep. It's also a limitation of the output.
If you have a computer with a mediocre sound card, outputting to average speakers, it’s all the harder to hear a difference. But even if you have great output, and wonderful speakers, it’ll be hard to tell the difference between a 320kb MP3 and a lossless WMA. Same concept applies to mp3 players and head/earphones of course.
Nonetheless, storage space is cheap, so I see no point in archiving to a lossy format.
Also, older CD’s have a much better mastering process, and I find I buy more older stuff than new now. Also, the new remasters are awful (a recent example: The remasters of the original New Order and Duran Duran albums are heavily compressed and significantly worse than the previous CD releases), so I typically stick with the old versions unless they are really awful.
No CD's are lossless. They're 48 khz 16 bit. It's a pretty small wavelength and bit rate.
Records are much bigger, and the enormously rich 196 khz 24 bit sound files may be the way of the future for media.
"Conan, what is best in life?"
"Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of the women."
by dario argento on Sep 3, 2010 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions
Sigh. Come on guys
I never said CD’s were lossless! I just said I wasn’t using further lossy compression when I rip them!
I swear.
Hehe, I store all my music as uncompressed wave and aiff files, then play them over my Bose Sounddock
And B&O living room system. Not.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
I still do have records in the house.
It’s getting harder to play them at high quality but without spending a fortune, which I just won’t do.
My mother still has more records than CDs. But that's a different house.
I also like the quality of those, unscratched a record is a beautiful thing. Digital is just a good compromise of storage space and quality. DDD recording, digital storage, digital projection. If the bit is there, it will sound as intended.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Yep, you nailed it.
There’s actually a little cottage industry for records again. There are more released now than 5 years ago. Of course, these are the same DDD mastered, heavily compressed albums, just in record form, so it doesn’t really bring that much to the party compared to, say, an album from 1975. Hmm, I do kind of want to set up my turntable now.
Over here, I have music ripped lossless, output from a server to a Logitech Squeezebox Touch, digitally connected to my digital-path Panasonic receiver, which makes the only digital-audio conversion as it outputs to the speakers. Some would argue the sound is “too clean”, which I can understand, but it’s amazingly clear and sounds outstanding.
A true cartoon about Oregon (and others) opponents this weekend

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Oregon better not freaking choke.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
Choking vs. a team that went 1-11 last year
Would mean they only win by 2-3 TDs.
I would say they have a less than 1% chance of losing this, far less.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
haha.
still, we choked in the opener last year and no one can forget what happened there. But it was much less of a choke, admittedly.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
I don't consider that a choke at all
A poor performance, oh yes, but they were on the road against a very good team.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
If it weren't next to impossible to be a title contender after losing your first game
maybe more schools would play tougher openers. Thanks BCS!
Can I get an Armon?
Oregon can afford to do it too
Because they start the season ranked high enough that an undefeated season puts them in the national title hunt for sure.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Even a 1-loss year might do it
Depending on who they lose and what happens elsewhere.
Had Oregon remained a 1-loss team in 2007 of course, they would have played for the title.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I’m just not sure how much credibility the national media will give to any of Oregon’s victories, with the way USC is being perceived this year.
Who knows?
If Oregon really goes 12-0 we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
The southern schools are the worst at this
Oregon is only playing Portland State, for example, because another legit opponent bailed.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Central Michigan I think
Not a great team but better than PSU.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
The NCAA could kill this by not allowing wins vs. FCS schools to count toward your record or toward bowl eligibility. Very simple.
They used to only let you count 1 such win every four years
But they got rid of that rule because not enough teams were bowl eligible.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
and jock radio makes fun of 11 year old soccer for giving everyone a ribbon. At least that has the excuse of being geared toward 11 year olds!
seriously...ugh
I know there are more teams that are deserving than there were in the past, but we don’t need 537 bowl games.
I think a “January madness” tourny would be better than the BCS system, but if you have to do bowl games, I’d say cap it around 8.
Can I get an Armon?
I don't understand why we can't do both
8 or 16 team playoff, then teams that don’t get in but are bowl eligible play in all the existing lesser bowls. Make each playoff game one of the bigger bowls. All the bowls can stay exactly where they are, almost as many teams can go bowling, but there’s a distinct meaning to the bigger bowls beyond whether they are before or after the new year
z
And Boise State, for the 2nd year in a row, laughs at all the sissy teams too scred to schedule real opponents in week 1
z
They don't have a choice
They play in a sissy league.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Eh if we scheduled an easier game than @ vt we'd still make a BCS bowl
Not the title game, but that’s probably a good thing. I’m going to be real worried if we have to play Alabama or something
z
I feel sorry for Boise
They finally move to a better league for next year and two of the current top three (Utah and BYU) leave.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Yeah, I really wanted us to go Pac-10
We’re already Pac-10 in wrestling and gymnastics, our tennis teams would immediately be the class of the Pac-10, our basketball teams would be bad bu not the worst, and our football team would get real opponents. But alas, all we did was moe to the WAC plus TCU
z
That was never going to happen
You were never on the Pac’s radar.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I know, which is too bad
We’re instantly top 3 or 4 year in and year out in football, before you factor in better recruiting from being in a better conference
z
1. Boise has a basketball team?
II. it would mean your students would have to go to class
D. Boise has neither the market size nor the national interest to even show up on the Pac-10’s radar… Enjoy you’re run in football as the new Fresno State, and be thankful that when it’s over you’ll still be tops in the WAC
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
Fresno State was kinda good for 1 year
And we handed them their first loss that year. We’re a LOT better than Fresno 2.0

Hey people
Thanks for the well wishes above. Everything is OK here, not as bad as those pictures show. Was a heck of a shake and we are still getting aftershocks atm. Adrenaline is certainly keeping me going but I’m feeling pretty shattered, bloody thing had to come the night after I stayed up all night for the France-NZ game didn’t it?!? Certainly wasn’t getting any sleep after it hit last night either.
We had both of our chimney’s collapse but inside it was just pictures, glasses and tv’s/monitors that fell over (luckily all the expensive stuff made it through OK). Work was a different story – booze was absolutely everywhere! Most of the damage is in the city centre where the older buildings are (those pics above are from the CBD).and you can’t get in there at the moment cause its such a mess. My old workplace is near the CBD and has a gaping bloody hole in the front where it lost most of its brickwork. I’ll try to put up a pic later if I can work out how.
Power came on about 30 mins back and I really popped on the computer to check out pics of the damage but thought I better stop in to let you know about the drama! I won’t be able to hang around because there is still a bit of cleaning and stuff to do but again, thanks for thinking of me.
Oh and if anyone even thinks about making a joke about how I caused the thing…..

Hehe: Why Hollywood doesn't give geeks what they want (Serenity, Snakes on a Plane, Kick-Ass, Scott Pilgrim, vs. Indy 4)

"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Sadly, so true.
They really have to hope that market grows in time. Scott Pilgrim cost a small fortune to make, too.
And unlike e.g. for Watchmen or even Kick-Ass, I never heard the rumors of geeks everywhere loving that comic book franchise quite so much. I never expected it to be a top 15 movie of the year. It’s really a niche that shouldn’t have cost so much in production and promotion.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
At the first trailer I thought, "huh, that's an original idea and look, could be interesting"
After the 4,352nd commercial, I just wanted the movie to go away. I wonder if the movie would have made any less money with a much smaller ad campaign.
On the bright side, it may get Michael Cera to reconsider and do an Arrested Development movie, as his star fades.

Person 2 who worked with him closely: “No he’s not a douchebag. He was kind of a doofus”

Person 2: “Mmmmmmmh”
Person 1: “He’s not smart?”
Person 3 who worked with him remotely: “He had some really bad investments”
Person 2: “I would say he’s not the smartest guy ever man. Let’s say we don’t know. We can’t tell.”

yeah, we're gonna make a basket out of chicken wire, with banana leaves in the bottom.
Also we’re substituting soaked alder, and green (freshly cut) apple wood for the banana tree stalks that they put over the rocks. We’ve got banana leaves to put over it, burlap sacks and a canvas tarp. I’m a little nervous about the tarp though, it seems pretty stiff, and it has some waterproofing on it, probably creosote. Hopefully that won’t alter the flavor at all.

yeah, I'm mostly worried about how well it will seal, being all stiff. The softer fabric kinda lets you tuck it in around the bottom before you cover it with dirt.
The seal seems really important, if any smoke is getting out, you can burn up your pig.

New Mexico's REAL FIGHT SONG
Fail to thee, New Mexico
Thy ashamed sons are we,
Other teams down the field they go
As we are giving it up for thee.
Fail! Fail! Fail!
Now we hang our heads for thee
Always shall we fail
Fighting never, yielding ever,
Fail! Fail! Fail!
The original:
Hail to thee, New Mexico
Thy loyal sons are we,
Marching down the field we go
Fighting for thee.
Rah! Rah! Rah!
Now we pledge our faith to thee
Never shall we fail
Fighting ever, yielding never,
Hail! Hail! Hail!
