Midnight...tonight. Why, oh WHY, must I work in the morning? In all probability I will be very sleepy at work in the morning.
Anyway, I don't do dedicated O.T. stuff in the sidebar too often but since it is the off-season, well...this thread is dedicated to the launch of Civilization V tomorrow. I don't expect a ton of people to care but those who do can share their hopes, dreams, experiences, and let us know what you think of the next iteration of the most addicting game ever invented.
When I was growing up I always wanted a computer, ever since taking some BASIC programming classes when I was young. But back then computers started at $2000 which was way out of the question for my family. It wasn't until much later--grad school/seminary--that I finally got a job that allowed me to purchase my own. I got one custom-ordered and it was pretty hot for its day. My dad knew a wholesale-ish company and I got it through him. I remember waiting and waiting for that thing to come. (I took the whole day off from everything the day it was scheduled to come UPS.) In the meantime I bought a few pieces of software in anticipation.
I remember the extreme thrill I got the first time I hooked the thing up and heard that default Windows boot-up tone. Then I decided to install a game. I looked through the manuals and decided that by far the most interesting-seeming one was...Civilization II. By the time I hit my first Wonder Movie I was hooked. I don't think I moved for 12 hours or so, even to eat. Civ 2 totally spoiled me for every other game too. I remember thinking, "Are all computer games this great?" Uh...no. No matter what else I tried I just kept coming back to Civ over and over.
I was actually disappointed with Civ 3 a little, as it seemed so dry. (No Wonder Movies?!? LAME! Give me my eye candy!!!) Civ 4 rang my bell again and I have played it a bunch. Marathon with a gigantic map rules, especially if you can find somebody sick enough to LAN and multi-player with you. After all of these years I still remain a sucker for Great Wonders and lose half of my games because of it, but I don't care. I've never bothered learning how to game the system either or play competitively. I just start my civilization and do what makes sense at the moment, equal parts role-play and strategy.
I'm a little nervous about Civ 5, fearing that it'll be another odd-numbered letdown in the vein of Star Trek movies. Hexagonal spaces? Itchy! But I'm getting it anyway...one of the very few franchises I will purchase at full price and on Day 1. I'm praying for no bugs...
If you share this illness, let me know what you think. Sorry for everyone else who doesn't want to go O.T.
