My bet: Rudy will have more points than Roy (poll)
I made a $20 bet with a good buddy of mine that Rudy will have more professional career basketball points, from this point forward, than Brandon Roy. He took my bet without hesitation... at first... What's your vote?
I am very concerned about Roy's knees, and their ability to hold up given his utilization rate and style of play. Does he have a decade left? 5 years? I dunno...
Given Rudy's likely return to Europe, where he routinely averaged 20 with less wear and tear, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Rudy play quite a few more years than Brandon. But given that BRoy averages a good thousand more points a year when healthy, this is absolutely a risky bet - and as a Blazer fan, one I'd be very happy to lose, BTW...
If my calculations are correct, Roy leads with 5532 in 4 seasons to Rudy's 4437 since 02. While I don't like spotting BRoy over 1000 points, I'd also be willing to bet that Rudy is dang close to passing Roy in total career professional basketball points...

The only thing Rudy will ever be better than Roy at, is having hair.

The word used to describe a red-neck due to his slack pronunciation of words.
Law of Logical Argument
Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.
Rudy only scored better than 20 once in his career. Hardly routine for him.
"These are dreams that we have." --Rudolfo Fernandez
Yeah,
he’ll be big in the Yugoslavian professional league.
This is a foolish argument. If you’re not in the NBA, you barely count, not because of some ridiculous American exceptionalism, but because every big time player alive makes his way here, and stays here, if possible. The NBA is the greatest league on the planet, and the second best is not a close facsimile. Great players, great competition.
I know it's foolish....
But it’s freaking September… I’m so bored I’m venturing into the junk drawer (kinda fun, actually)….
I’m not at all saying Rudy is anywhere near the player Roy is.
Just like I think Nate is better than a .500 coach.
But the statistical oddities and possibilities are interesting to me…
The junk drawer is so full
that it always crashes my crappy computer. I miss that place. A lot. Now all I can do is read about stupid bets that I don’t even want to think about (betting on Roy’s health???)
It turns out I overestimated my apathy, but not enough to matter.
The NBA is the best league without a doubt
but you’re exaggerating. Barcelona could beat many an NBA team. Easily.
And that’s not a new development. Some European teams have beaten or come close to beating NBA teams in test games. Even in the early 90s when the Dream Team dominated other national teams, the Lakers behind Magic Johnson barely beat Rudy’s former tiny team Joventut Badalona 116-114 in a tournament. I don’t think the current versions of well-off teams like Barcelona, Caja Laboral, Moscow or the Athens teams would ever win a title in the NBA, but they could get 30+ wins without exceptional luck. Claiming those are NCAA division 2 teams just because not many players have a 30 inch vert is ridiculous.

Sure
Maybe one day a team would win with a deep roster of solid players and a coordinated team effort and no exceptional MVP caliber stars, like Detroit. Who knows unless the NBA expands, and then it would be just like another team in the US and Canada with some stars signing there. So it can’t be proven unless maybe we make an international club championship like in soccer. And even there it’s just a one-game championship between the top clubs from all continents after the regular season that isn’t taken nearly as seriously as say the Champions League between European teams.
The main point is that it’s a bit arrogant to believe only NBA players and teams are good, and the rest of the world has junior level teams that don’t know how to put a ball in the hoop.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Winner take all, one game championships, don't nesesarilly determine the best team,
just who’s champion that season.
Detroit had Billups, high quality role players, toughness, desire, and they faced a Laker team that had grown drunk with it’s own success. In retrospect, Billups really was all that, and more, a remarkably underrated player, and Shaq really lost focus. I hate LA, but there’s no way they should have lost.
To your main point though, one organization can bring all the essential aspects to guarantee dominance in Europe. We didn’t corner the market on great coaching, terrific players, modern facilities, training, and solid management groups, afterall. The problem comes when there aren’t enough legitimate challenges to test and harden this imagined entity.
The NBA is extremely tough. Playing time means chewing your proverbial leg off. There are so many teams with unimaginable resources, it really brings the best out of the best. 82 games and then months of playoffs, greatness matched against greatness, yes, there are good players in Europe, and a few good teams, but no, there really is no comparison between the two.

Are you a fan of european basketball?
Do you follow it closely? How are you qualified to make the assessment that there is no comparison?
I think that the person that is more informed in this case is more likely to have made the correct assessment.
I am not a big fan of the European game,
but only because I’ve watched a lot of games, and found the product less than. College basketball often leaves me feeling the same way, especially when the talent level just isn’t very high.
Don’t get me wrong, when great teams meet, and the game is intensely competitive, I love it.
Anything done at it’s highest level can be considered art.

European teams don't play 82 games a season
It’s a lot less. So I would take that bet in a heartbeat.
Yeah, it only works...
if BRoy doesn’t play past this contract…
Again, this is a bet I am very happy to lose!
It’s kinda like rooting for my Fantasy pitcher against my Red Sox… I’m trying to create a win-win here…
I'm concerned about Roy's health too
but it would have to be something earth-shattering to have him never play again. Wow, that’s depressing…I don’t really like your “win-wins” Visionary…
I'm not saying now....
I’m saying, I think he has 5 awesome years left….
Rudy might run around for 10 in the Euro leagues…
Roy's barely 26 man.
He’ll still be in his prime in 5 years.
Even so...
How many games per year would Rudy play in the Europes?
"I come to you now, at the turn of the tide." -- Brandon "Gandalf" Roy, April 24th, 2010
Yup
I think they only play 20-22 regular season games, and the playoffs are a lot shorter.
For example Juan Carlos Navarro scored 100+ more points in the season he averaged under 11 ppg for the Grizzlies than any of his seasons in Europe (including one season averaging over 18 ppg).
For the sake of the Blazers, I hope we have a healthy Roy and that you win that bet.
And Rudy is still a Blazer.
In Bayless I trust.

In FIBA basketball??
‘cause that’s the only way you win that bet.

We'll course, I'm going to count FIBA...

That's about as likely as Durant getting more points than Kareem
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Erm...that is way more likely
KD is a great young scorer. Rudy won’t average 15 ppg for whatever international team he may play for.
He''ll average probably 18 points if he goes back
If he stays in the NBA it’ll probably be about 9-13
Until he's not, Rudy's a Blazer.
by collectiveshane on Sep 3, 2010 8:45 AM PDT up reply actions
My bet is that as soon as Rudy is playing in Spain...
Blazer fans won’t give a rat’s hiney how many points he scores.
by 52therim on Sep 2, 2010 10:50 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
In Spain we say "puntos", and it´s the same word for "points" and "stitches".
That mess things up for me when counting their “puntos”.
You know what that word sounds like, don't you?
Think dirty…. there you go… now you’ve got it, don’t you?
"I come to you now, at the turn of the tide." -- Brandon "Gandalf" Roy, April 24th, 2010
well I know it's about points - but NBA points are worth more than Euroleague
The only way Rudy will ever pass Brandon in points is if he returns to Europe and plays in a league over there – he’ll never do it as an NBA player.
So it will be much easier for Rudy to score points over there, making it a kind of apples and oranges comparison.
I’d keep my money with Roy nonetheless

This must be a very good friend
cause this is a very long term bet. Perhaps your wager can be documented at

Holding out for Hedo
Yes, very, and yes, I suspect it might be a decade...
before I concede and pay out…
And again, I’m not in any way saying Rudy > Roy. I just thought it was an interesting topic during the dog days of summer…
insantiy
but I deem it to be temporary. I shall prescribe you a 3 week hibernation, after which there might actually be something to talk about
I think if you're going to count Rudy's euro points
You have to include Roy’s college points as well.
I bet you're right.
"I come to you now, at the turn of the tide." -- Brandon "Gandalf" Roy, April 24th, 2010
They play professional basketball in Europe?
Seriously, come on: this is like debating whether some career minor league baseball player will hit more “professional” home runs than Hank Aaron did. Who cares?
I was born in '52, and I believe in #52. Hang in there, GO.
You too, Przy: everyone knows you're the heart & soul of the Blazers.
I don't care about Rudy, but Roy's knee problems are a lot more serious than Blazer fans think or want to admit.
I have heard from both Channing Frye and John Outlaw, Travis’ older brother, that Roy himself is very concerned about his knees and making sure he is very careful with them. They both said it even affects his play, especially on defense, as he tries to limit the further wear and tear on them so he doesn’t have a shortened career. Before Roy signed his contract, Channing even went as far to say that he expected Roy to be even more careful after getting the max contract, and that it would show in his play slightly.
If this is true there is no way the organization doesn't know about it.
you don’t give a guy a max contract without knowing what your paying for. I’m concerned too, but I doubt John Outlaw knows more than Paul Allen.
I know...
He could play with Diana Turasi. That little girl could play on team Fahrenheit in Antarctica, against himself, and would lose. You know why ? He’s a quitter. I have no respect for a quitter at any level, of any capacity. It takes a certain breed, cut from a tainted cloth if you will, to fold like a cheap lawn chair in the face of your future. Why would any team in their right mind hire this dude. If i owned a team and returned to my office to see this idiots name on a time card, he and whoever hired him would be in 26a and 26b on Southwest Airlines. Coach class to Iraq’s Developmental League.
Excellence is not an act , it's a habit.
Setting aside whether this comment is intended as satire or not...
…Who the hell is “He?” Could be Brandon Roy; could be Rudy Fernandez; could be the Pope. To be technical: when you use a preposition, it must have a clear antecedent. The reader isn’t a mind-reader.
I was born in '52, and I believe in #52. Hang in there, GO.
You too, Przy: everyone knows you're the heart & soul of the Blazers.
20 bucks on whether Roy's knees last?
Flagged.
Obviously Roy is better than Fernandez in almost every facet of the game. Rudy would have to play for my high school team to even come close to matching Brandon’s contribution to the Blazers.
"Sasha? That's a sissy name." -Mike Rice
Okay
I decided not to flag this because it brings up a relevant discussion on Roy, but you should find a better way to open a topic. Betting on a player getting injured is inappropriate. Especially that player.
"Sasha? That's a sissy name." -Mike Rice
Brandon's knees might give out sooner
…but Euro teams don’t play nearly as many games as NBA teams. Brandon is going to dominate this comparison.
More games per season
more minutes per game
more iso’s in the NBA
Roy will score more points this season than rudy will in 3 seasons in europe.
Even if roy only lasts another 5 years and rudy lasts 10, its a terrible bet.
