If Oden does not work out this year, Do we go after Marc Gasol?
I saw on RealGM that he is a free agent next year.
I love this guy gasol. 7'1 he has got size only 265 lbs as fat as he looks.
He gives us size, passing, presence, blocking ability. 58% FG which can compete with Laker bigs.
I am not sure how much money we would be able to have next year to offer him but just saying if we can get him we should totally go all in

It would have to be a sign and trade
I think Oden will work out just fine this season.
Gasol is no defender though. Guy is slower than erosion, and Nate simply will not go for that.
LOL
Guy is slower than erosion.
I love it.

and greg Oden has a beautiful jumpshot?
I am talking about IF Oden still does not produce next year, continues to be unhealthy. Then I really dont see how one wouldnt want Marc gasol over Oden. And gasol does shoot descent jumpers. Actually quite respectable.
And as slow as you say he is….he can actually play 36 minutes a game. Just watch some of his videos you will see he is a great asset to have.

at what point did I say Oden sis not good?
I am saying if he happens to break somethings else again next year….
I am a huge Oden fan, cant take my eyes off the guy
WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE
Greg has a decent jump shot
but man, I hope he never ever settles for it!
Throw it DOWN, big guy!
Greg needs to save his shooting touch for unguarded, straight-away 15 footers, when the clock is stopped and the other team’s big men are trudging to the bench, shaking their heads and muttering to themselves

i believe he has hit 2-3 jumpers the last 2 seasons
nothing to be excited about until we see more next year. His Freethrows though were a very good sign last year
WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE
I agree
I’ve just heard too many Patrick Ewing comparisons over the years and I hope that Greg never goes down that jump-shooting road during his NBA career. Portland already has LMA and Camby to shoot 15 footers

you said if he still does not produce
implying he hasnt been productive.

and actually contribute to a discussion when there is one going on
simply saying Oden was productive last year isnt covering all of the issues brought up in the last few posts
WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE
really?really?really?
You are so underestimating him. He is quicker than Oden was last year
WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE
he ran a great high low with Zach randolph
I used to make fun of him until I saw him hold it down in the NBA. This aint no fluke Euro
WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE
he got a lot quicker after dropping a bunch of weight
between his first and second years. I think maybe your impressions of him are based on his rookie season.

I wonder what his averages were against playoff teams. Anyway, why would Memphis let him leave? And
we wouldn’t have anything to offer. If Oden sucks next year or gets hurt, Memphis isn’t going to do that trade. We can’t get Marc Gasol.
I would love Gasol on this team. It's unlikely we get him here though. We already have a jam-packed front court and will be over the cap next summer.
"What people need to know is that those pictures were taken a year and a half ago, and I've grown since then." - Greg Oden
We could have had gasol!
we drafted Future HOF Josh McRoberts though.

This
And it’s too bad, because after the World Championships in Japan it was clear that he would become a very good player, e.g. defending the Greek interior bigs way better than the US team could. After he slimmed down, he now added another step to his game.
I fear either the US scouts overruled the international scout(s) on this one after the Blazers had already taken 2 Euros and wanted their guys too, or KP & Co. feared that it might end up with neither Rudy nor Marc coming to the NBA though both had stated their desire to play here and Marc went to high school in Memphis while Pau was there.
the Blazers had just drafted Greg, and already had Joel
and it’s not an easy job convincing a young Euro big man to sign with an NBA team when there’s not a clear role carved out for him (as we’ve heard re: the even less-talented-than-Gasol Joel Freeland, recently)

I know people will be upset about it around here
and deny the need (against reason),
But hypothesizing what we ought to do if Oden breaks down again this year (of course, while hoping it just remains hypothetical) could lead to interesting and relevant discussion.
If Oden goes down hard this year we don’t have to give up on him, but, IMO, we do have to change our plan.

we can also talk about what happens when..
Paul allen is no longer with us or if roy loses his legs in a car accident. all hypothetical and interesting but not something we care about looking forward too

We maybe don't have to discuss it, but I sure hope Miller, Allen and Cho have a plan that is better than the ostrich strategy
You can call it scenario management, risk management, contingency planning or emergency preparedness. Or not being caught with your pants down (no pun intended). Just have some kind of reasonable backup plan. That’s e.g. why I wouldn’t have minded at all to take on Okafor’s contract in all the CP3 rumors, since he would have been such a backup plan with his talents and being considerably younger than Camby who can fill a gap for the short term.
I agree about the Okafor
Even though he’s not exactly the Iron Man himself, he’s a serviceable center. People ignore his gameplay because of his huge contract; he is overpaid don’t get me wrong. But he’s probably as good or better than other centers like Dampier, Dalembert, Haywood
Blazers basketball? Just basketball you say? More like a way of life
He has played 82 games in all 3 last seasons
Only his sophomore year was plagued by injuries (26, rookie was 73 and third year was 67). For a big man, he seems to be in very good health. Which is one point that appeals to me, along with the ability to play 4 and 5 like Camby.
We are talking about Greg Oden
who has had injury problems since college. has played 82 in 3 years combined. 2 major season ending injuries on his knees. This hypothetical situation of Oden not being able to be healthy next year is not too far fetched. you dont care about oden’s health going into the future given his history?
WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE
I care enough to believe
that Oden’s going to be fine and healthy next year. I have no doubt in my mind that he’s going to have a long career in the NBA as a good or even great player.
Now, if he had another significant injury next season then yes, I would highly consider getting another competent center to fill Oden’s spot. But if you’re going to pick Marc Gasol just because you like him so much I say we go after Dwight Howard because I like him.
Why Gasol though? Does Gasol’s contract with Memphis expire after next season? Is that why there’s an interest in him, you think there’s a chance would could even land this guy? I don’t see a trade to get him working out either…
The 2012-13 NBA season: a dynasty begins.
He is a free agent and thats why I posted to ask if Gasol was gettable
because I dont know about those details
WITH ODEN ON OUR SIDE
Gonna keep the positive vibes flowin, Oden will work out this year
jus sayin

I'd be very ok with us going after Gasol
not that he’s much on the defensive end, but he’s pretty dang good.
by Junk Drawer Bandit on Aug 7, 2010 10:38 PM PDT reply actions
Marc Gasol wouldn't be bad
Not as good of a rebounder as our centers, but clearly a superior passer and good shot blocker.
Blazers basketball? Just basketball you say? More like a way of life
Can't happen, won't happen
We can’t sign Gasol. We’re over the cap, so all we can offer is the MLE (which we can’t even offer next year because you can’t use it 2 years consecutively). And Gasol will make around 10-13M per year in his next contract. The only way we could match up contracts would be to do a sign and trade with aldridge (which would be overpaying) or camby/miller etc (who are getting old and not worth trading a young quality center for).
Not to mention… Oden’s gonna dominate next year, so this issue won’t even come up.
