Blazersedge Scrubdown: Matchup #4
The Blazersedge Scrubdown continues with our second head-to-head matchup. The explanation is in the gray box. If you already know what you're doing, by all means continue and enjoy!
When we talk about Blazers history we usually mention icons with retired numbers who played in our favorite eras. What about the rest of the guys? Who is the most notable Blazer outside of Drexler, Porter, Walton, Lucas, Sabonis, Vandeweghe, Paxson and company? Despite the clever "scrubdown" name I didn't pick true scrubs for the brackets. I'm not confident we're ready to debate the merits of Joe Wolf versus Alaa Abdelnaby. Rather these are Blazers whose names you will (or at least should) recognize who were never long-term starters and probably had zero or one fantastic years for the team.
In each post two Blazers of yore will go head-to-head. In the comment section (no polls, as they can be spammed) you vote for your favorite of the two. You can use any criteria you wish: stats, contributions, personality, your fond memories, who you'd like to have now, even just that you like one guy's name better than the other! It's meant to be an interesting exercise without being overly serious, you know? The only rule is that you should give the most weight to the Portland portion of these players' careers rather than what they did before or after. If you do have memories or solid reasons for favoring one guy over the other, please share them in the body of your comment. Be sure and place your actual vote in the subject line. We'll narrow down 24 players over the next few weeks until we hit the Final Three, one of which will be the official winner.
Today's matchup pits Viktor Khryapa against Audie Norris. Which is your pick to advance?

Viktor
I remember Audie Norris (nothing specific though), but I have to choose Khryapa because he played for us about the time I was starting to pay more attention to the team again. I think he was totally in above his head in the NBA but he was brave enough (don’t remember him as being a high ego guy) to give it a try. Also props (not that it was his decision) for being one of the few Blazers who spent time in the D League. Probably not the America he envisioned.

Are ya confusing Viktor with Monia?
Viktor started a lot of games and I don’t think he was in the d-league. He seemed like a role player.
Monia was pretty bad and lost, though.

Yeah, she must be
If Luke Babbitt and Jerryd Bayless played a game of table tennis I'm not sure who would win but the ping pong ball would lose no matter what. - Ben 7/16/2010
I thought they both went to the D League
but Viktor was called back fairly soon. But then my memory is faulty…
Audie
For that game winner in the playoffs against Dallas that got the Blazers into the second round.
Khryapa
But not because I don’t know who Audie Norris is. He played a huge role in winning the Blazers first round series against the Mavs in 85(?). He basically didn’t do much and then played a huge game 4 with Bowie, and Thompson and Drexler saddled with foul trouble. He even hit the series winning shot. He then did nothing again and disappeared.
I always like Krhyapa’s hustle and determination even if he did seem over matched.

Audie Norris!
I don’t remember Viktor hitting the key shot to beat Dallas, enabling the Blazers to escape the first round!
It’s such a well known moment, Dire Straits immortalized his celebration. (It’s at the 3:24 mark, but the whole video is fun if you haven’t seen it)
Seriously, this isn’t even a close contest. He was real likable too. Vote for Audie!
Khryapa did have
the #1 spot in this highlight video…

Yeah, I hope people don't not vote for Audie Norris 'cause they weren't around back then.
Heck, I’m a 25-year-old guy from up north of Seattle and still feel Norris deserves this vote based on merit.
Viktor,Viktor
I haven’t heard Audie’s name in a long time. I was really bummed when Viktor was traded. To me he had the upside and resembled a certain Blazer today: Batum.
if Batum resembles Khryapa in any way - that will be the true tragedy

If Batum is traded so we can bring in a second LaMarcus Aldridge
then I’m all for it. But he IS the best one-on-one defender, and those aren’t easily found…

I liked Viktor, he was tough and was also around
when I started really getting into the Blazers, like Jorga said. My sister in law saw Viktor’s wife (girlfriend?) buying $1500 jeans at nordstroms. So Russian. I liked him and HA. We almost had the Russian connection with that other russian guy, i forget his name. It started with a M i think?
Hev was supposed to be even better than Victor.
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

Audie did more for the Blazers. but Viktor...
But I remember Viktor. I would choose Viktor, but he was a Nash choice. If he was a Pritchard call we would have gotten a better deal. Audie it is.
Chicago payed him 2 mill to play 105 minutes?!
Victor FTW. Those are some gourmet minutes.

I wish I could get that much many for that many minutes...
Heck, they could put Khryapa in a commercial:
105 minutes could get you LaMarcus Aldridge, and save your team $2,000,000.

Also,
this proves why giving scrubs nicknames is stupid. Audie-matic? Come on. You should be in the top 8 on the team in minutes played for two full seasons before you get a nickname.

If only you were there...
The Glass Palace went CRAZY every time Audie entered the game…he had a great run as a cult hero. Actually could play a bit too. AUDIE in a heartbeat.
The Atomic Dawg
was the last 6 foot 9 center in the NBA that I can think of.
I dare some one to think of someone shorter since that era.
Juwan Howard is exactly 6 foot, 9 inches.
But he started more out of necessity than ANYTHING else…

Ben Wallace is really 6'7"
Acoording to pre-draft measurements. Maybe he didn’t have the Afro at the time.
Wow I must be getting old...
Audie in a total landslide. The blazer autographed basketball my parents won for me at a elementary school fundraiser had his signature on it. Twice. Yes he was that good.

Victor all the way.
I was sad to see him go! Good role player, and a tough guy to boot.

The Atomic Dog, Audie Norris
That big shot he hit in that playoff series vs. Dallas. Awesome. Oh, you youngsters, if you only knew. Khryapa? It’s not even close. The Atomic Dog would just naw on Khryapa’s bony leg.

Audie is My Pick
I remember Viktor too, but the best he did for us was help us get LaMarcus
VOTE FOR ME
Sincerely,
Audie Norris.
I love you Blazer Fans!
tough choice.
victor was contemporary and seemed pretty awesome. but norris has the awesome name. plus i guess he was pretty good as i vaguely remember..
give it to audie.
"I told somebody to stop crying," Pendergraph said after the game. "Actually, I told them all to stop crying."
Audie Norris by far
Definitely Audie, Khryapa didn’t do anything here, Audie had the fans rocking every time he came into a game. All hustle all the time. Lot like Jerome was.
I was going to vote Khryapa
For representing more than many the dream that is a draft pick, and because I’d never heard of Norris, but a series-winning shot against an Aguirre-era Mavs team and a Dire Straits video appearance rocks my vote.
I was going to say audie
but then I looked and saw that Khyrapa was part of the 2006 draft-day tradeapalooza, so I’ll go with Viktor.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former. -- Albert Einstein
Audie Norris
I really suppose this is a generational thing. I suspect many of those voting for Khyrapa never saw Audie play or don’t know about him at all.
Because to me? This is the easiest scrub down of all. Norris was a fan favorite, who actually hit a playoff series winning shot for us.
Nothing specifically against Khyrapa, but what did he ever really do? Broke his foot, healed, got a “neat” nick-name, embodied “scrappy” for a short period of time, and then faded into oblivion.
Norris? Was our Luca Brasi on the court, and actually got us into the second round of the playoffs. IMO no contest.

I voted for the Wolverine because I have no clue who Audie Norris is, and I’m not convinced you guys aren’t all making him up.

I have a Audie Norris pint glass from SunShine Pizza
The original glasses before the Diary Queen cups we all remember.
But I choose Victor! I loved how Victor played, he is the type of player I would take on my team any day! he played tough D, hustled his tail off, and I swear he averaged taking 1 charge a game towards the end of his time in Portland. I’d consider making a place for Victor on this team, (which is obviously far more talented)
Anyone remember the SunShine Pizza mugs?
C*mcast sucks!

Now Kryapa best reminds me of the failed direction, mismanagement, ruinous scouting, and eventual disaster that became a PTB nightmare.

Best Trade Ever?
June 28, 2006: Traded by the Portland Trail Blazers with Tyrus Thomas to the Chicago Bulls for LaMarcus Aldridge and a 2007 2nd round draft pick (Demetris Nichols).
Kryapa
I’m pretty sure that sitting through the entire 2005-2006 season Kryapa was the only Blazer that I saw actually dunk in a regular season game. Wait, i think Outlaw was close in one game but rim checked himself. Yup. Kryapa.
2010 = Return of GRODEN. BELIEVE. Sec310
Viktor Khryapa
Kid had great heart and a nose for the ball. Put his heart and brain into a athletic body like Travis and that would have been a heck of a player. Unfortunately…
Viktor!
I think the last game of his rookie year when he and a bunch of other guys who hadn’t played all year (including Outlaw, and Ha) who got to play the 4th quarter against the Lakers (and WON!).
He was a great glue guy his second year.
Audie Norris
Wasn’t he well known for a weight problem, too? If so, that clinches it: Audie.
Audie Norris all the way...
The ’ Atomic Dog ’!! Great nickname. He always seemed to enjoy the game even with limited minutes, did pretty well in Europe.
"I figured we ought to hang around for a while and see if we can give 'em all a nice big shitburger to eat!" -Manager Lou Brown -Major League
Audie won us a playoff game
Viktor played on a team I can hardly remember.
Give me Audie.
Viktor
I kind of liked the ‘Russian phase’ of the Blazers, even though ultimately it didn’t work out. And he landed us LaMarcus. Well, at least as part of the package.
He actually became a victor after his NBA time, winning the 2007-08 Euroleague title with CSKA Moscow, 2007 European Championship (against Spain), and was voted DPOY last year in the Euroleague.
Now if Moochie Norris would have been eligible…
Audie
For the sole reason that he had a Franz Bread card and Viktor didn’t.
Khryapa
for all of the Crap-Khryapa jokes I made during his time with the Blazers.

agree with the Franz Bread statement above!

His playoff game winner against the Mavs was more meaningful than all of Khryapa’s baskets combined.
