Sources close to the situation don't expect Carmelo Anthony to sign an extension with the Denver Nuggets this summer.
Via Alex Kennedy's twitter. No idea who this is but it wouldn't be a big shock if this is Melo's last year in Denver.

Good. He can go to NY and continue not winning.

He might be underrated at this point.

Wow I couldn't disagree more. I think he is underrated.
I think he and Durant are the two best offensive players in the game. Dude is unstoppable in ISO.

If you give him the ball at the elbow area or baseline, forget about it.
2 points, at least.

He destroyed Martel last season
guy’s a SF with a PF’s body, how you going to guard that guy?

I strongly disagree. Durant is WAY more efficient, as well as a better rebounder and a more interested defender. Melo’s a little bet better as a passer.
Based just on last year, Durant was a top 5 player and Melo was more like top 15.
If poor playoff efficiency becomes a pattern for Durant, I’d have to reconsider.
If Durant becomes a more efficient playoff performer then I'll have to reconsider.
A couple minor disagreements.
Durant is not a better rebounder. He was slightly better than Melo last season, but has a worse career rebounding rate. At best they’re about the same.
The playoffs matter. I can’t see a rational way a person could legitimately and fairly argue that Durant was a top 5 player last season unless they ignore his playoff numbers.
Durant was 52nd among small forwards in assist%. That’s completely unacceptable for a perimeter player who handles the ball as much as he does. Al Thorton (possibly the least interested passer in the league) had a better assist%. I can’t consider him a top ten player until that changes. Assists are pretty important.

I don’t place the premium on assists that some folks, like yourself and Mortimer, do. Durant had a 32 usage and a 118 offensive rating. That’s absolutely unreal. If you can do that, I really don’t care how much you pass. Melo had a 33.4 usage and a 110 offensive rating— good, but not close to KD. I used just last year’s stats since Durant was pretty clearly a different and improved player than he had been earlier in his career.
You are correct that I didn’t really pay attention to the playoff numbers— 6 games going against an elite defender isn’t enough to make me change my opinion. I’ll go with the big sample size. Like I say though, if playoff struggles become the norm for him, that’ll need to be taken into account.
I agree with most of that.
I think it would be easier to build a team around Durant, since he’s still young and is hall-of-fame good a certain things. If they can find/develop another playmaker they might able to get away with his poor court vision or whatever.
I still think Melo is harder to guard. He has a higher usage (which is crazy since Durant has an incredibly high usage) so he probably takes more difficult shots. He also takes a lot less threes which is going to make Durant’s efficiency look better even though that shot might not be as available durring the playoffs.
Durant reminds me of a young Tracy McGrady, only not as good. (look at his 2002-2003 numbers) I just think it’s hard for a player like that to have success in the playoffs. I think a super high usage and low assist% make it hard to be efective in a long playoff series.

I think the TMac comparison is quite legit. It remains to be seen if Durant will blow up to the level TMac was at for those couple years. Its worth noting that McGrady had some brilliant playoff performances— and before we write anyone who plays his style off as having little hope for playoff success, I think its important to acknowledge that things may have been very different if he’d had better teammates in the years before his health deteriorated.
Just to add a little rumor I heard somewhere...
Was it Storyteller who pointed out that the Thunder clear out for Durant to inflate his rebounding numbers? Or has that ended?
In Bayless I trust.

Interesting
Collison, Ibaka, and Krstic are the only three players on the roster with a higher rebounding percentage than Durant. They’re also pretty low numbers for big men, except for Ibaka, who saw the lowest number of minutes out of the three. Krstic, by the way is a terrible rebounder, ranking 44th in the league among centers.

Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit!
I think he's a rated player

Ya he sucks so bad
He wasn’t a great player in the NBA until he got more experience in the league and owned on the olympic team. And he got a good teammate too. What a loser.

No, you're right
he’s the best player in the NBA for sure.
Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!
Too bad about Denver
Perennial contender reduced to rebuilding before its time. Probly more eastward talent migration

Why just a three year offer?
He is clearly a max money/years guy. Can’t blame him.

Too bad about Denver if he leaves. Looks like Wark is leaving, Karl just survived cancer, and his future is uncertain.
This year might be Denver’s last hurrah, but if they know he’s leaving I bet they trade him.

lol he's still got a year left on his contract and that extension remains on the table till July 1, 2011.
Denver doesn’t have to do anything, Melo’s the one who has to get something done before the current CBA expires next year.

This just shows that
we shouldnt even bother with trying to get Chris Paul. Why give up Bayless and Batum in order to get Paul for one season. If Carmelo doesnt sign his extension, he’ll go to New York next year and then Paul will follow. The NBA is getting ridiculous with letting the players pretty much run the league
NY can't afford Paul & Carmelo under the current CBA
and it’s highly unlikely that the new CBA will be MORE leniant towards player salaries.
