Rudy Fernandez Not Worried About Talk In Portland
HoopsHype comes through with this translation of a Rudy Fernandez interview in El Periodico. Fernandez responds to Rich Cho's statement last week that the Blazers will not release his rights.
------------------------------
The new Blazers GM Rich Cho has confirmed there's no chance for you to return to Europe. What do you think about it?
Rudy Fernandez: Well, if he has said that, then it's true. I'm still a Blazer. Right now I'm not worried about what they say there [Portland], I'm only worried about what is said about me at the Worlds.
------------------------------
Speaking of Cho, Gary Washburn reports on Twitter that the Oklahoma City Thunder have found his replacement by promoting assistant GM Troy Weaver to "VP/Assistant GM."

Further translation...
… I am still self-conscious. Just not about the Portland thing.
Right now I’m not worried about what they say there [Portland], I’m only worried about what is said about me at the Worlds.
quality of a good player?
it seems to me a quality of a good player is one who worries about his game, not what the critics think. so, as long as he’s worrying about what people think, he’s not worrying about his game….which suffered last year. i, for one, am worried about what his game for the rest of his tenure as a blazer.
I hope he continues to play well in FIBA
Until he's not, Rudy's a Blazer.

well ...
i’m not really sure what else Rudy could have said. mind you, i’m not defending his words this summer. i think when FIBA is done Paul, Rich and Rudy will have to sort through all of this stuff. in other words, much like Rudy, i don’t care what he’s saying.
thanks so much for your concern, but i do not require your validation in order to feel free to submit my comment.
I agree
what else would he say? It seems like he’s at least reached the point where he realizes that more whining will get him absolutely nowhere.
I
He could have said nothing.
Or he could have agreed with Cho, saying “I’m still a Blazer until/unless I am traded to another team.” Then stop there. Don’t comment on whose comments he worries about. The only comments he should be concerned about are those of his teammates and coaches.
Just pull a Nate?
In Bayless I trust.

Nothings changed...
Rudy and his agent have publicly made their stand.
Cho and The Blazers have made theirs….
It’s a difficult mess. Fernandez and his Agent really haven’t made it any easier on The Blazers and themselves by their approach to this situation. Going public with statements such as I’m willing to sit out, I’m unhappy, and I’d rather be playing in Europe…what does Rudy expect?
If he had kept quiet or been more discreet about his displeasure, it might not of happened on his preffered time line, but it would of been much easier to have an equitable trade manifest. Rudy set himself on fire…and now wonders why The Blazers are unwilling to put him of Fire Sale.
What a mess.
"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"
Hopefully Rudy will learn from this. Take a few cues from Martell. Who quietly wanted a trade and got it done.
martell wanted a trade?
Please, for the love of all that is holy, please stop using the following: "Book it.", "FTW", "Epic" & "Fail".
...no seriously--stop.
Quick revealed this news last week
when he was asked about the Rudy drama. Martell’s agent went to the Blazers backchannel and made the request, and Portland tried to place Webster in a location where he could compete for a starting gig

and then KAAAAAHN
drafted Wesley Johnson.
Or maybe the other way around, but still.
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
and then added Beasley
as I’ve been saying all summer…poor Martell
but at least the Blazers tried to do right by Webster

Martell Webster will still get playing time, but it'll be at the 2.
That’ll end up being an abject failure, too, since Webster is way too one-dimensional to play that spot—especially in the Triangle offense. Even the guy Webster is effectively replacing on the roster, Damien Wilkins, has better handles than him. That also applies to the mediocre Corey Brewer, who I’m sure will battle it out with Webster in training camp for the starting job.

Rudy setting himself on fire reminds me of this....
… A Florida man got some exotic cigars and he insured them against fire (of all things).
He then smoked each one and filed a claim.
The insurance company said, ‘no.’
So he sued the insurance company….. And WON!
So the insurance company sued the guy for…. ARSON! And the company won!
So now, dude is in the clink for a very long time.
Moral?
Well, no moral, just a story that reminded me of this.

Citation?
No offense, but it’s a popular thing to propogate these stories about incredibly ludicrous lawsuits to demonstrate how the legal system is broken, government is broken, America is under assault by a faceless mob of nanny-state agitators, etc. etc.
I’m still waiting to see an example offered to me that links back to anything other than hearsay. So if you’ve got any kind of citation that documents this case, I’d love to see it.
(P.S. I know this is more of a “funny story” thing than a real argument you’re trying to make… I would just really really like to see one of these turn out to be true for once.)
Like the Whos down in Whoville they did it without boxes or ribbons or bows, they did without centers or posting down low. They won without All-Stars and Spaniards and Frenchmen. They won with old geezers and sub-par defense-men. They won playing rookies from deep off the benches. They won with their grit and their guts in the trenches. And some who observed them have been known to say that their hearts grew three sizes (at least!) on the way. One hopes with their poise and their passion now proven that once they are healthy their game will be groovin'. -- Dave

+10 for
Arrested Development reference.
I’m glad Rudy said what he did and is playing as he has. Even if it doesn’t translate into better performance with the Blazers, it should improve his trade value and make it easier to give him what he wants. Keep hustlin’ up boards, R-Fer.
I <3 Rudy
when he doesn’t speak.
If what I just commented turns out to be wrong, please delete from all memory.
I predict
Rudy has already played his best basketball in the NBA. He will follow the Sergio path (another year or two on an NBA team that is an ideal situation to showcase whatever he thinks he has, puts up average or below expectation numbers, heads back to Europe with his tail between his legs.
I don’t think even New York and Phoenix play the kind of ball Rudy thinks he’s good at, and the only place he’s going to be “the man” is on a midling euro team.
I also think that Ariza hit was more devastating to his career than is generally being acknowledged.
He's not strong enough to play in the NBA, that's the bottom line.

durant says hi
Rudy’s physical tools are fine. If anything, it’s his handles and shot selection that haven’t been NBA caliber.

agreed
I love B Edge almost as much as I love B Roy and close to my love for B atum
The thing is though
He played fine his rookie year. He had weaknesses (individual defense, ball-handling) but he made for them with decent help D by being being active, nice passes, and great outside shooting. This last year his weaknesses were more glaring and he didn’t seem to show his strengths as often.
His rookie year showed he CAN play fairly well in the NBA. His second year showed that unless he is focused and accepts whatever role he has, he will not succeed.
Until he's not, Rudy's a Blazer.

Rudy's second year
shows the results of NBA scouting too
"Better, not good, but better." - Herb Brooks
Rudy's second year
shows the result of not having a rotation player that looks for him every time down the floor.
I don’t think he needs Sergio, but he needs someone like Sergio. Someone who wants to feed him. It’s clear that Andre doesn’t want to feed him and Jerryd can’t be bothered to throw the ball at the rim unless he’s trying to score (which I’m fine with btw). I don’t think Rudy has the skills to do it by himself, nor does he have the attitude to wait for the opportunity to be fed.
Sergio was a great buffer between Rudy’s skillset and his attitude toward his role. Lose Sergio, lose that buffer and here is where that lead to.
IMO.

Also Rudy's second year: was the results
was the results of coming into training camp with his back hurting and tired from the summer games. Then his injury then his surgery then not having the time to recover and getting his timing an game shape back.
Then came play-offs, he got home sick and decided not to play where we would lose and he could go home to his people faster. Otherwise, Rudy’s second year was the result of quitting on his team mates.

I don’t think it’s the fact that these guards made a conscious effort to not lob-pass the ball to Fernandez, but that the kind of eye-contact synergy that Rudy and Sergio had isn’t likely to be developed on the fly during an NBA season

Rudy hasn't been the same dude post-injury though.
He’s been tentative in going to the paint and has made poor decisions with the ball on the break. Those aren’t qualities that earn you minutes over Jerryd Bayless.

I know folks want to use the Ariza injury as an excuse
but after his back surgery last winter Rudy said he felt better than he had before the hard foul, and he wasn’t willing to use it as a reason for his play. Rather, Fernandez said that he had lost confidence.
After the fact, we know that his agent had asked for a trade in December and nothing materialized in Feb. Rudy was not happy when Bayless replaced Roy in the starting lineup and so he checked out, mentally. This came to a head in the Sun’s series when he passed up taking wide open shots, and he later admitted to Euro reporters that he was wrong to do this
I’m already thinking of Rudy as an ex-Blazer. The deal that moves him to another team is just a formality at this point.
Play well, Fernandez, so Cho can recoup the investment that Portland put into your NBA career. Too much PT was thrown your way at Bayless’ expense in the past 2 seasons.

I've seen Andre dump the ball to Howard
when an alleyoop to Rudy was called for. I understand that it is a small sample size but I remember Rudy looking really dejected after that play. Other than that play I haven’t seen an avoidance of Rudy, just no strong desire to get him the rock.
I guess the short version is: I agree with you, it’s not personal, but it still sucks to Rudy, so he’s being a whiny *%@^(.
Republicans are liars, Democrats are hypocrites, they are both bought and paid for by corporations. Grrr.
If an alleyoop was that easy
you’d see it all the time, instead of maybe once a game. Perhaps Andre didn’t throw the oop because he knew it was a turnover waiting to happen. It’s not like Andre isn’t good at throwing alleyoops.
No strong desire to get him the rock is a viscous cycle; when he was getting the ball, he either passed up or missed the shot, which resulted in a loss of confidence in himself and in his teammates, resulting in fewer touches, which further eroded his confidence.
Unfortunately, Rudy wasn’t able to “man up” and focus on other areas of his game, because there aren’t any.
There it is, isn't it.

Double Post!
This alleyoop was that easy. Howard was surprised to receive the ball. The point of me posting that though was the range of emotions that Rudy went through on that one play: anticipation to excitement to disbelief to dejection. It was all there on the replay if you weren’t watching the ball. That was when I finalized my conclusion that Rudy needs fed and doesn’t know how to handle it when he’s not.
Republicans are liars, Democrats are hypocrites, they are both bought and paid for by corporations. Grrr.
Guess what Rudy
Were not worried about you either.
The game was delayed for over 15 minutes with 5:07 left in the second quarter after France's Nicolas Batum, who plays for the Portland Trail Blazers, dunked and twisted the rim. Officials scrambled to put a new rim on the basket and reattach a net.
speak for yourself
I’m very concerned about Rudy’s play in the WC, his trade value needs to be polished to the point where an NBA team will overpay for his services
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Lols. Simmer.
I want his value to go up too, but my worrying about it will not help the matter.

It's not he can really say what he's thinking anymore unless he wants another fine.
He brushed it off like he should and put the emphasis where it needs to be right now. After the Worlds then I’m sure he’ll worry but my gut feeling is that if he’s not traded he’ll show up for training camp, have a LONG talk with Cho and an equally long talk with Nate and he’ll still be in the rotation but the minutes he get will depend on how he’s playing. He’ll probably be a lot quieter too after the long talks he’ll get so hopefully he’ll do well enough to get traded to a team he’ll do well on and we’ll get something worthwhile back for him.
The sad thing is, he actually does fit to a certain degree with the team … he plays really well with LA, Roy, Batum, Oden and Miller but even with that he’ll never get the minutes or role he wants unless he works his butt off. Whether or not he’s willing to do that is all up to him.
the big problem
…is that Portland seems to value Rudy higher than any other team in the league, or at least the ones in the conversation. They want way too much for him.
what do you think he is worth?
i think portland just wants what they had been getting offers for before he publicly said he wanted traded.
PS: if you say a 2nd round pick or anything less then that i recommend becoming a soccer fan

I think he's worth
another young slasher-type player. Like a Wilson Chandler or Damian James. From what I understand, though, Portland wants a player like that plus a first round pick, which few, if any, teams will give up.

well
if all you get is (in my opinion) wilson “garbage even in dantonis elivated numbers system” chandler, you should get a late 1st or second round pick too. I think james is unproven and if por takes on a rookie they probably want it to be someone they actually want. I have no idea what rudy is worth, but I do know rudy is worth more then martell and martell got portland a #16 pick so anything less then 16 is selling low

They want way too much for him.
Rudy averaged 24-25 minutes per game, in a contending team’s rotation
Cho wants commensurate compensation for that production. There’s no reason for Portland to cave in and flip Fernandez for less value just because his agent is making idle threats
I respect Rich for playing hardball. Especially on the first deal of his GM career

rudy shouldnt care what people say here, neither should batum
they should both be trying to win for their country (much more important then winning for money) and priority #2 and #3 should be improving as a player and a human being. like he said he is still a blazer and thats that, if he gets traded he gets traded, if he gets released he gets released, if neither happens he sits out or goes to training camp, none of this happens until after worlds so who cares, but i see its another good opprotunity to bash him, even if he is being bashed for having his priorities straight.

do you know how this tournament works?
top 4 in each group advance, spain is in group d currently lead by france and lithuania both at 3-0 spain, lebannon and new zealand are all 1-2 canada is 0-3.
they still play lebanon, and canada and have more then a very good chance of beating them.
unless you are hinting at (which you are not) the worlds ending on the 12th then yes it will be over soon.
FYI 2 or 4 in group d stays away from #1 in group b until the championship

someone must have had a talk with him....
….Because to me, he sounds as if he is changing his tune a little bit.
Last week he seemed to not acknowledge the fact that he was STILL a Blazer.
Now he does…..
Anyone wanna buy my fernandez swingman jersey? I only wore it after he had a good game. So I wore it, like, 3 times in a year.
My Roy jersey however is very worn. :)
My oden jersey was starting to show wear.
My Batum jersey is showing use.
My Przybilla jersey is in tatters….
My Aldridge jersey is in decent shape…
But Rudy? Like I said… Hardly worn.
Too bad Rudy doesn’t show more effort, heart, and class, because he is the reason I can get my girl to watch a game.
Maybe Rudyculous Fernandez will worry about the talk in Portland when Camby’s name is chanted for effort, and ol’ #5 is booed just by showing up at the end of the bench in the Rose Garden…?
