Junk Moar 8-30-2010

So weddings are fun, but they sure are a lot of work when you're in 'da party'. Fortunately, most of the work just involves hanging around for pictures and keeping the groom at least as altered as you are. Needless to say, I did my job well and didn't even look too out of place in a tux. Most importantly, the reception was on a boat that went around Mission Bay and the DJ played 'I'm On A Boat' during the dance set. Needless to say, I got crunk with it.

Star-divide

JD definition paragraph, take two.

The daily Junk Drawer (JD) fanpost is the place for true off-topic conversation and people's random thoughts.  The purpose was simple from its infancy.  We wanted a place where people could come and chat about all of the "whatevers" that didn't fit with the rest of the site and even be loose in terms of byplay and humor.  The goal was to foster community...to let people who wanted to get to know each other outside of what they could discern from the strictly basketball posts.  In that sense the project has been a riotous success.  We've had happy JD's, sad ones, drawers that looked like a sharing circle, drawers that resembled open mic night at the comedy club...people have really become a family.

So if you have a one-off thought, consider posting it here. The rules about importance and significance of the topic are suspended in each JD but keep some of these basic rules in mind:

  1. Ad hominem attacks and swearing will never be tolerated
  2. Remember everything you write is visible publicly
  3. Don't use the JD call out or talk about users from other BEdge threads.
  4. Be mindful that every image posted slows down the JD, so use discretion in how many you post (you can also link to images you want to share so that they will not overwhelm the JD). When you do post images, put something in the subject line of the comment so that the image can be minimized.

JD Welcome Paragraph take 2 : written by Dave, adapted by idol. Special thanks to Timmay!

So be merry and junk! Take every moment as the most important one of your life and don't waste your time, which is the most precious gift you get because only with time can the possibilities of life be revealed and experienced in this world.

I'm in love and I feel perfectly fine with that.

yeah I loved that movie.

I remember feeling as a kid like I had learned a lot from Charlotte also.

I can almost relate to being like a child as you describe except that there is no way I’ll eat cocoa puffs (unless they are on a donut).

yeah. normally i watch sportscenter in the mornings but my tv was already on this movie channel (cause i saw the beginning of The Black Stallion on sunday morning) and i couldn’t bring myself to turn the station. that movie put me in nostalgia mode so i couldn’t tear myself away. nor did i want to.

I can see that

Talking about it makes me want to watch it now. I haven’t seen it since watching the remake and that just wasn’t even close to the same experience.

i can imagine. i wouldn’t watch anything except that 1973 cartoon.

It wasn't the worse thing in the world.

If I could have contracted amnesia and forgot the classic cartoon, it might have even been a decent adaptation of the book. But, as I haven’t, it just annoyed me for even trying to remake it.

And, yup, I need to find a copy of that and watch it. Pronto

Could be an interesting test for Patty, since Hamann, Greene and their backups (one is more of a point-forward) are an underrated backcourt

Hamann is a tall combo guard with a quick first step who is hard to contain once he is past you without giving up the foul or the and 1. His complete lack of outside shooting prevented an international career for him.

Australia plays tough defense, it's as there is a lid on the basket for the opposition

The reason might sit on the bench: A Spurs assistant coach

Not so great game for Patty so far, more like a team effort. His only basket was a goaltending.

the fighting got real repetitive in acts 2 and 3. it got better towards the end, because they changed where you were doing the fighting, but i ended up just going forward in the game not because the combat was fun, instead because I wanted to continue the story.

I liked that instead of more and more weapons upgrades you got a buddy to help you with the fighting. And some of the scenes were really nice. I usually tried to kill all attackers instead of just running forward, except where I was completely out of weapons. I hated that they constantly took way everything you had collected when it became a new day/night.

a couple of days ago you and another poster had a discussion going on about science and mysticism

IIRC you said something to the effect of science and mysticism being kissing cousins

if that is true, could you clarify a little bit

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Aug 30, 2010 10:01 AM PDT reply actions

hmmm

I can see making some claim like this, but I think the context was in regards to talking about with fajunga and trying to explain why I thought he was both an amazing and way ahead of his time thinker and yet often gets barely mentioned for his contributions to the science of psychology and mysticism. And then we digressed briefly into why I disliked mainstream science’s unwillingness to accept the relationship between physics and metaphysics, the overt and the sublime, or science and mysticism.

I think the degree to which I’d call them ‘kissing cousins’ would be because those are two approaches to understanding fundamental truths of the world. Science is an external, pursuit that focuses on attempting objectivity and reaching public consensus on what these truths are. They tend to be physical truths because these are the only truths that can be empirically testable and allow replicatable experiments to be conducted. Mysticism is an internal pursuit of awareness and communion with that which is beyond the physical world that focuses on experiential knowledge of the individual but is entirely without empirical validation or repeatability.

by idoltime on Aug 30, 2010 10:25 AM PDT up reply actions   2 recs

Ergo,

I feel like any person who considers themselves a seeker of truth should find the balance during their life between these two approaches to finding truth because neither of them will ever explain everything.

And this very thought was brought up in a passage I read just a short time ago. Different context, but the idea is similar.

“Science, traditional enemy of mysticism and religion, has taken on a growing understanding that the model of the universe suggested by quantum physics differs very little from the universe that Taoists and other mystics have existed in for centuries.”

If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as science can reveal it.”

Sure. But I wouldn't use Einstein's use of the word God to mean anything close to what people use it for now

last one:

“I believe in Spinoza’s God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with fates and actions of human beings.”

Albert Einstein, upon being asked if he believed in God by Rabbi Herbert Goldstein of the Institutional Synagogue, New York, April 24, 1921, published in the New York Times, April 25, 1929.

well, everyone uses the word “God” differently. i use it differently than another person who believes the same things i do uses it.

but he does invoke the word. and he does seem to acknowledge the existence of a higher power/God/whathave you.

I don't wanna keep quoting stuff

but from the reading I’ve done on the matter, I don’t think it’s possible to conclude that Einstein’s position was that a creator-God exists, much less a personal One. There are a lot of quotes and passages about what he means when he used the word God, most of which end up disparaging faith in some manner. Just from the tidbits on the page in front of me, he denies the existence of an afterlife, denies the usefulness of prayer, but his main beef seems to be with any notion of a God that cares about people individually. However, he also expresses frustration with mysticism and atheism, so maybe he was just a really grumpy dude.

you know much more about it than me, i’m sure. i’ve not read a ton of Einstein, almost none in fact.

but, again, just judging by what you’ve posted, just because he doesn’t believe in the Judeo-Christian idea of God, doesn’t mean he doesn’t believe in God.

some say that Christians have a narrow view of God. I agree with this. but i don’t think that concept is exclusive to Christianity either.

"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"

by DrivetheLane on Aug 30, 2010 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions

he clearly rejects a personal God

which essentially means he thinks the Gods of the major religions are hogwash.

I do agree with Idol that he and Spinoza are similar in that they use the word God in reference to a concept that isn’t “God” as most people understand the word. Spinoza was my fav philosopher in college. The profs all thought he was an idiot, but I loved him.

Tell me what you don't like about yourself

This is also my view of a God.

I don’t think it is all that dissimilar from where the Transcendentalist ended up with their beliefs.

by idoltime on Aug 30, 2010 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

i can’t say i disagree with this.

but i think most of the trouble stems from having to use the word “God”. it’s too heavy a word that doesn’t really encompass anywhere near enough. but it’s the only word we have I guess.

"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"

by DrivetheLane on Aug 30, 2010 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree.

Although I think a lot of the problem is that many people’s imaginations and intellect is too limited to see God as having but that old guy that you can pray to give stuff to you.

yes. “God,” as anyone in anyway, approaches Him, is too small.

Sure

The word can mean lots of things, but for me it’s annoying (and for AE I think it was too) that his use of the word God is used by religious folks as a way to say “see! the greatest scientist everrrrrr thinks what I think!” when he clearly didn’t.

That sounds like someone who believes God or “God’s work” is visible in the natural forces. I’m not sure that is a correct assumption about Einstein (would have to research it), but it is not an uncommon belief among non-atheist scientists who recognize that they can explain a lot of things (and an increasing amount, so the frontier of the inexplicable might be moving constantly) but not everything.

That's not exactly agnostic either.

It’s kind of like this quote I just published up ^there

I believe in Spinoza’s God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings.

Belief in a ‘personal God’ seems silly to me too. But an agnostic specifically believes that knowledge of God is unknowable and he never claimed that of which I know.

there are lot of longer quotes that are pretty harsh towards the idea of the Judeo God.

here it is (not that there's much merit in a quote contest regarding Einstein's beliefs, because really, who cares?)

“My position concerning God is that of an agnostic. I am convinced that a vidi consciosness of the primary importance of moral principles for the betterment and ennoblement of life does not need the idea of a law-giver, especially a law-giver who works on the basis of reward and punishment.”

The Pac-10 has always been the most exciting conference to watch on offense

The only one even close is the SEC.

And in the SEC

Some teams, cough Mississippi State, cough, are horrible on offense.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

by skywaker9 on Aug 30, 2010 10:57 AM PDT up reply actions

there are some really turgid offensive games in the SEC

LSU is inconsistent, S Carolina has been downright bad for years, Ark. is inconsistent, Miss State, Tennessee, Kentucky, on and on. Bama isn’t exactly a joy to watch either.

by atomiccafe on Aug 30, 2010 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions

And if you remember the 1990s in the Pac-10

The old joke was the game didn’t start until each team scored at least 35 points.

Defense has dramatically improved in the Pac in the last ten years but its still a league that favors offense.

I think it has a lot to do with climate

the heat and humidity in the SEC and really cold weather in the Big-10 don’t favor a fast-break style offense. The Pac-10 is all pretty temperate.

by atomiccafe on Aug 30, 2010 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Its a local style

When I was in college in Iowa I would go to Grinnell HS’s games on Fridays because small-town HS football is fun.

It was very much of a grind it out running style of play, quite the opposite of the passing-led attack you see out here.

Apparently if they wait until 2012 they have to pay a lot less in penalties to the Big 12.

by atomiccafe on Aug 30, 2010 10:57 AM PDT up reply actions

And they are not going to be that good

At least soon.

Utah on the other hand, has a chance to contend immediately for a conference title.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

by skywaker9 on Aug 30, 2010 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, Utah is a nice fit. Apparently there are more Colorado alums in California than Colorado, which is why they are switching.

That and their closest conference rival at the moment is either Nebraska or Kansas

It dramatically reduces their travel budget for conference games.

Intel acquires Infineon's Wireless Solutions Business for $1.4 billion

http://newsroom.intel.com/docs/DOC-1173

Big for the cellphone industry (e.g. a lot of companies buy Infineon’s chipsets for the baseband part of their devices, incl. Apple that so far has refused to use Intel chips for its portable products).

"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban

by Norsktroll on Aug 30, 2010 11:11 AM PDT reply actions

Yup. I bet five years ago Infineon could have asked for $4-5 billion for that unit.

In fact, it was the most valuable part of the business as far as I know from working with them. The rest is embedded chips for automation, and DRAM chips that are subject to a terrible pig circle where a manager is all but useless.

And the McAfee acquisition is mostly for strategic reasons long down the road, because security is at the top of the long-term strategic concerns for Intel but they had nobody to build middleware and end-user products on top of their chip platforms. Plus it gives them a place on the desktop of millions of PCs that they didn’t have.

Ugh.

I am so thankful we got to sit basically the whole time during my brother’s wedding.

by Roybot on Aug 30, 2010 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Worst wedding I ever attended

I didn’t actually know a single person there except for my friend, whom I was ‘escorting’. That particular summer, I didn’t have a girlfriend and she didn’t have a boyfriend, so we attended a wedding each with each other as dates. Much easier to be with someone at a wedding…..

Anyway, because I didn’t know either the bride or groom, I had nothing emotionally invested. But what made it much, much worse was that the minister decided that this ceremony would be the perfect time for a sermon on what makes a good marriage. I think a pastor officiating at a wedding should say something about marriage – but this guy talked for 45 minutes! Way, way, way, way too long. Hey, pastor! Here’s a clue – the wedding isn’t about you, it’s about the couple getting married. Share your insights during pre-marital counseling, not during the ceremony!

Chances are that if I ever did so, I would never be asked to officiate any more weddings…..

by Storyteller on Aug 30, 2010 5:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Great point.

If the pastor gives a 5 minute speech, people will nod and think that’s profound. If it goes past 10 minutes, they’ll look at their watches and wonder when this thing is going to be over.

And, personally, I’m not a big fan of being in those situations where I don’t know anyone else but some people are fun to meet in those situations.

by idoltime on Aug 30, 2010 5:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I went to a pretty awful wedding two years ago.

It was my uncle’s step daughter or something and it was in his tiny backyard. It was roughly the temperature of the sun’s surface outside, and the friggin bride and groom were an hour late because he forgot the ring.

We had to sit outside waiting and waiting and waiting until they finally showed up. The groom had a pimp cane, hat, the whole works. He looked seriously ridiculous.

And then there was the reception….oh man. It was terrible. They were once again late to that because they spent about 92 hours taking pictures or something. So basically everyone just sat there doing nothing until finally we were able to eat. And boy was the food awful. There was no dancing because the dance floor was in another room downstairs, so they didn’t even have their first dance until just about everyone had already left.

Some really beautiful areas surrounding the Bay…

by Storyteller on Aug 30, 2010 5:37 PM PDT up reply actions

It really was beautiful.

It must have been a good 12-14 years since I had been there or spent any real time in that part of San Diego. And the weather was (is still) a perfect high 70’s low 80s with a nice breeze and just enough clouds to make the blue look like a sky. It made standing around in a tux for hours and hours worth it.

by idoltime on Aug 30, 2010 5:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Nice

Glad you got to enjoy both San Diego and the wedding.

If I had to live in Southern California again, that’s where I’d want to be.

Thanks!

And me too. Really no contest. SoCal is a brutal place to live with the traffic and cost of living but San Diego at least makes up for it by having more decent people and a nice relaxed beach vibe compared to LA/OC/etc.

I’m actually staying in the same house in Mira Mesa that I grew up in. It’s nice. But I need to time these trips better during the winter when I need a real sun break.

Like a pastor

It’s awesome to officiate at weddings for people you know and have watched their relationship develop. You can personalize the ceremony just enough to make it unique for them as a couple. Plus, when you’re preaching a sermon, the focus is on you. But when you officiate a wedding, the focus is on the couple. Takes some of the pressure off and you can just have fun.

I’ve also performed ceremonies for a couple of ‘friends of friends’, including one very minor celebrity. Not quite the same but still enjoyable.

First the ball rolls in and out on the foul, then he could still tie it with 2 made FTs, and then Barbosa in and out again. Three times lucky for Team USA.

Not a good idea

From ESPN NBA Rumors (Insider only):

“I think for Hedo to have Steve Nash out there and for Steve Nash to have Hedo out there, you’re talking about a guy, he really is a facilitator Hedo is and we will put the ball in his hands,” Gentry said, according to Sports Radio Interviews. “For the first time since I’ve been here we can use Steve as an off-the-ball shooter which he is great at. Probably one of the top five shooters in the league, but we just never had the opportunity to put him in that position.”

Yes Nash is an amazing shooter but letting Hedo handle the ball….

I'm not completely through, but if we have a larger discussion I can chime in

My main observations were about the language anyway, and about the similarities to the Beatles song.

The thread of Beatles songs throughout the book was interesting.

And, yeah, one of GB’s bookclub questions was about the translation/language stuff.

Dwayne Jones should be the primary backup center to Robin Lopez.

C: Robin Lopez
C: Dwayne Jones
C: Gani Lawal
PF: Hedo Turkoglu
PF: Channing Frye
PF: Earl Clark
SF: Grant Hill
SF: Josh Childress
SF: Hakim Warrick
SG: Jason Richardson
SG: Jared Dudley
SG: Matt Janning
PG: Steve Nash
PG: Goran Dragic

As you can see, I hate Channing Frye at the 5 and just plain hate Hakim Warrick in general. I’d like to see Dan Dickau as the team’s 15th man, too, if only to upset Mort.

2k11 is deepening My Player signficantly

The first add this year, press conferences (they are announcing more each day this week)
http://www.facebook.com/NBA2K

In this year’s My Player mode, the game doesn’t end after the final buzzer. In NBA 2K11 you gotta take the podium for your own post-game press conferences. But watch what you say, your answers can earn you admiration or get you run out of town. Will you claim all the glory or will you praise your coaches? You would nev…er blame your teammates for a loss…would you?

I finally scored 100+ points with my center, in 12 minute quarters of course. I wanted to beat the record.

So do I

That’s what I would do if I was 7’5" and in the NBA.

I usually ratchet down the quarter-times to make stats more ‘real’, but I’m also just too good at basketball video games. I wanted to reach milestones.

I’m a beast, Cloudy, deal with it. My stats are much crazier with my center at the rating of 68 than my PG at the same rating, so when I got him 99’d out (if I ever get to that point), it’ll be nuts. NUTS.

Haha, this part is bad

As a PG, my usage percentage at my peak was 4th in the NBA or so, but as a center, my usage percentage is insanely high. Like twice as much as Lebron.

Because I am a much better PG than Chris Paul is in the game, I like to grab a rebound and take it up the court myself and set the play up.

Just call Troy Polamalu the man with the million dollar hair.

The long, flowing black hair that tumbles out of Polamalu’s helmet and down his back — it’s nearly three feet long — has been insured for $1 million by Head and Shoulders, the shampoo brand that is endorsed by the Pittsburgh Steelers safety.

The insurance was obtained through Lloyd’s of London, which did not reveal what must be done to Polamalu’s hair for anyone to collect on the policy.

Wow, that is hilarious

I don’t think his stuff is pointless. It’s obviously not high level academia, but it’s the kind of thing a lot of less educated people in this country would seriously benefit from reading. I was on board with a lot of what he said from 9/11 until the lead up to invading Iraq. I passionately disagreed with him on Iraq, and then it seems like my opinions were separating more and more from his. I haven’t read his articles in a few years, so I don’t know what he’s up to know.

Still on the Rex bandwagon.

by dan_the_man on Aug 30, 2010 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions

No, but what he does do is willfully ignore the plight of the underclasses which give China/India a competitive labor advantage, while perpetually talking about the strides that their relatively small middle and upper classes are making.

by atomiccafe on Aug 30, 2010 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

While that’s true, I think he does it because he knows that’s the only way to make it relevant to his audience. You and I are probably not very affected day to day by China/India’s lower class. We are more tangibly affected by the technological classes. So that’s his focus.

I think we’re mostly agreeing here.

The response of the local Serbian McDonald's management made case studies for international marketing

They de-emphasized the Americanism of the brand, and styled it as a Serbian company with specific offerings and also aiding people by distributing free meals. After a few years it had very high customer satisfaction ratings and revenue again, and it didn’t get destroyed during protests like some other US shops.

Also in post-Soviet Russia, McDonald’s was a place to have weddings, something no American would ever think of. But it was clean, new… and safe.

If you are looking for that kind of overhaul, then it’d have to come from higher than the MNT coach. The recent success Germany is having even predates Klinsmann, it goes all the way back to 2000.

The problem is building a great youth development structure costs a lot of money and would take a lot of energy fighting established interests. I’d anticipate you’d have to get all the top level talent out of NCAA and High School socer, and also have to take pretty serious aim at the age-group AAU organizations. I’ll sign up for that fight, but how many folks within the U.S. soccer hierarchy would as well?

I just finished the US/Brazil game while "working"

That was a good game. It was nice to finally see Splitter after all the hype. He’s skinnier than I expected. Uglier too. I expected a more dominant post player. I’m not convinced he’s going to help SA as much as some people think. He looks too small to stop big centers in the post.

Still on the Rex bandwagon.

by dan_the_man on Aug 30, 2010 3:46 PM PDT reply actions

If you want to see a too skinny stiff center, look at OKC's last acquisition Tibor Pleiss

He really is not NBA ready it seems. Splitter will adapt quickly, and didn’t seem to have problems with Chandler, Love and Odom. Rather with the guards bringing him in some foul trouble, and he picked up one dumb offensive one that he wouldn’t get if his team had kept it close the whole time.

Just finished watching US-Brazil

Intense game! Why doesn’t Steph Curry play, and why does Russell Westbrook keep getting minutes? And how are you guys this afternoon?

by momomoses7 on Aug 30, 2010 4:20 PM PDT reply actions

Curry's shooting has been off

And shooting is the biggest thing he has to offer. Westbrook penetrates better and is way better on defense. It was a good game, as I wrote above a few minutes ago.

Still on the Rex bandwagon.

by dan_the_man on Aug 30, 2010 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I shift-A'd, sorry

I thought Westbrook made a lot of bad/terrible decisions with the ball today. Neither he or Rose seemed particularly interested in sharing, which I think Curry would be more inclined to do. I’d put his BBIQ ahead of Rose (who played pretty badly today) and wayyyyyy ahead of Westbrook, who relies too much on his athleticism to be a good international 1 IMO. We definitely played best with Billups at the 1 today.

by momomoses7 on Aug 30, 2010 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Against a good defense like today, Billups is going to be a good choice at the point

The other 3 guys (Westbrook, Rose and Curry) are all very talented, but still young and much less experienced. I’d trust Billups to pick apart defenses on the fly.

Still on the Rex bandwagon.

by dan_the_man on Aug 30, 2010 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions

For sure

But against good D I’ll take Curry over Westbrook. I trust him more to make the right play whether or not his 3s are falling. By the way, since when does Derrick Rose think he’s a 3pt shooter?

by momomoses7 on Aug 30, 2010 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Probably since he thinks he's the best guy on the team

And the 3pt line is 3 feet short.

yeah I'm hoping people tell me that the JD won't be the same without me.

otherwise I’ll be sad that nobody loves me, everybody hates me. And then I’ll buy a 6 ton semi and drive over the Sellwood bridge 50 times a day

Yeah, I'll miss his recent trend of posting cool space pics.

But I figure that I’m going to stay in touch with him wherever anyway so I just hope he finds what he’s looking for in this world. If I was g-love or DSox’ age, I would have ditched this place by now too.

by idoltime on Aug 30, 2010 6:06 PM PDT up reply actions

wait, how old is G-love?

As I said in her goodbye junk, I unfortunately never got to know her. And I will miss DS for everything he brought to the table.

Ah.

eventually I’m gonna have to step back a little. I’ve noticed that I’ve lost some of my leisure time to this place, but I enjoy doing it so I don’t think of it as a real loss. Just not very productive.

But she was only a fulltime BEdger very briefly. She gets busy and hasn’t junked much in the past six months while you’ve been coming on anyway.

I will definitely miss both of them. Way more than that TIMMAY guy if he ever bothers coming back!!!

And even if he thinks this is about the flak, I bet he’ll come to find that he just needed a break and that was a good reason to take it.

Learning to deal with annoying people

Heartbreak/annoyances with the dames, all the real world stuff, is important to growin’ up.

I was always super annoying, but even more annoying when I was younger, so I can’t begrudge any kid makin’ mistakes.
