Gameday Open Thread: Spain vs. France In FIBA World Championships

Coming up here at 11AM Pacific, Spain -- featuring Rudy Fernandez and Victor Claver -- will play France -- starring Nicolas Batum -- in FIBA World Championship play.

You can watch the game on NBA TV.  You can also try streaming it on ESPN3.

I'm not going to lie... I'm a little hype to see what happens in this one.  Comment along as we go.

In honor of the international nature of this tournament, we'll take part in the soccer writer practice of handing out a 1-10 grade for both Fernandez and Batum after the game. So watch carefully!

Please respect all of the in-season gameday thread rules including no swearing, no pictures and no links to Justin's television.

I was there

got all three games in Izmir yesterday. Crowd was all over Rubio after he went down with what looked like a career ending head injury then popped right up after he got the call. He was booed every time he touched the ball after that. Nic looked solid imo. Great D, gets his points quietly but fairly efficiently. Rubio has a great handle. Rudy played decent when he had the ball in his hands but may have cost Spain big with his late T.

invest in a flat screen and TIVO – that way you can take the family to the fair and still catch the game in HD :)

It's playing well despite the obvious flaws in the roster composition

Croatia just can’t handle them with 1.5 NBA-talent players

I decided to put my NBA feelings towards these players aside

There will be 82 games to hate. If there were Blazers on the team I’d probably feel diff, but I’m supposed to root for these guys over all the teams with Blazers on them. So I’m gonna pretend there’s no NBA for a couple hours each day

hasn't worked for me yet - maybe by the finals

Players I like watching do well:

Billups
Iguodala
Gordon
Chandler
Love
Curry
Granger

Players I like watching struggle:

Durant
Odom
Gay
Westbrook

That's unfortunate

At first glance it looks like you’re in good shape, but every player you don’t is a big-time part of the rotation. Let’s just hope Rose/Iggy/Gordon can carry us through

Rose I couldn’t decide on – Westbrook is on the bubble ’cuz I wanted the Blazers to draft him…

Obligatory Patty Mills update: They narrowly beat Jordan 76-75

He was solid with 4/5 on field goals and 2/2 on free throws, but 0/5 from three and just 1 assist. Nielsen and Andersen saved the Boomers’ bacon by scoring over 20 against a team they should really beat 9 to 10 times out of 10.

That was fun...

Can’t wait for the season to start!

Spain was terrible, and they played with fire by not putting France away in the beginning.

Batum hit the dagger 3 which made it a two poss game, and held the lead the rest of the way even though navarro tried his best hercules impression.

navarro.

he is the MJ of the spanish team.

One thing I always take from these Spain games

Garbejosa hasn’t yet met a 3 he doesn’t like, regardless of the distance

only a few years ago Rudy wowed us with his super dunk and sweet 3’s…and now it’s Nic, plus he can defend. My how times have changed

And the awesomeness of the chase-down blocks. And his highlight dunk.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
