Gameday Open Thread: Spain vs. France In FIBA World Championships
Coming up here at 11AM Pacific, Spain -- featuring Rudy Fernandez and Victor Claver -- will play France -- starring Nicolas Batum -- in FIBA World Championship play.
You can watch the game on NBA TV. You can also try streaming it on ESPN3.
I'm not going to lie... I'm a little hype to see what happens in this one. Comment along as we go.
In honor of the international nature of this tournament, we'll take part in the soccer writer practice of handing out a 1-10 grade for both Fernandez and Batum after the game. So watch carefully!
Please respect all of the in-season gameday thread rules including no swearing, no pictures and no links to Justin's television.

I was there
got all three games in Izmir yesterday. Crowd was all over Rubio after he went down with what looked like a career ending head injury then popped right up after he got the call. He was booed every time he touched the ball after that. Nic looked solid imo. Great D, gets his points quietly but fairly efficiently. Rubio has a great handle. Rudy played decent when he had the ball in his hands but may have cost Spain big with his late T.
2nd? I guess
I would like to see this game, but alas, I’m taking the family to the fair. Go Frenchies, or whatever they call themselves
I'll bet you still have a CRT and VCR, too
invest in a flat screen and TIVO – that way you can take the family to the fair and still catch the game in HD :)

It's playing well despite the obvious flaws in the roster composition
Croatia just can’t handle them with 1.5 NBA-talent players

I'm pretty hyped
I get NBA tv but not ESPN Classic so I can watch it on a real screen. And yeah, I wanna see Rudy guard Batum when he’s on the floor with Rubio and Navarro
the one game I most look forward too, actually
this US team still hasn’t captured my fancy – it’s like I want them to win, but ugly. France vs. Spain though – that is pure symmetry

We're real fun to watch when we're forcing turnovers

my problem is enjoying it when Durant struggles

I decided to put my NBA feelings towards these players aside
There will be 82 games to hate. If there were Blazers on the team I’d probably feel diff, but I’m supposed to root for these guys over all the teams with Blazers on them. So I’m gonna pretend there’s no NBA for a couple hours each day
hasn't worked for me yet - maybe by the finals
Players I like watching do well:
Billups
Iguodala
Gordon
Chandler
Love
Curry
Granger
Players I like watching struggle:
Durant
Odom
Gay
Westbrook

That's unfortunate
At first glance it looks like you’re in good shape, but every player you don’t is a big-time part of the rotation. Let’s just hope Rose/Iggy/Gordon can carry us through
I still want them to win - but in spite of those four
Rose I couldn’t decide on – Westbrook is on the bubble ’cuz I wanted the Blazers to draft him…

what's do dislike about kevin durant?
talented, humble, wants to play for his country, wants to be loyal to his team, gets better every year through hard work in the offseason…
why would anyone dislike this guy?
Well, duh...
If you’re a Blazer fan, of course you hate him!
when he's playing against you sure
but when he’s playing for our national team?
i'll root for him to make the last second three at the end of the championship game
until then….

Obligatory Patty Mills update: They narrowly beat Jordan 76-75
He was solid with 4/5 on field goals and 2/2 on free throws, but 0/5 from three and just 1 assist. Nielsen and Andersen saved the Boomers’ bacon by scoring over 20 against a team they should really beat 9 to 10 times out of 10.

Remember how skinny 19 yr-old Batum/Durant were?
And he’s way bigger than Curry, who did just fine this year
thats true
and this is really the first I have actually seen Rubio play, but Curry seems like a more skilled player offensively/defensively
what!? u mean u haven't seen
rubio’s play against USA! almost everyone was watching looser
oh and fyi he’s bigger in height & width than curry
He's 6'4" with a big frame.
And he’s only 19. He’ll definitely add muscle.

BS.
If he was scared, he wouldn’t drive in international play…
If only Nate had an offense that featured a low post game, and some player movement, flashing into the lane…
I know you Nate honks don’t want to hear it, but Rudy can play..
Better than Nate can devise an offense…
Never said Rudy was an all-star...
But he CAN hit an open 3, better than anybody else on this roster.
A terrible loss of an excellent asset, and yup, I pin it on Nate first, Rudy’s agent’s mouth second.
Question? Could that be called a "drive by block?"

Seems like nothing ever bad happens when Batum makes a play
unless a teammate lets him down…

Batum hit the dagger 3 which made it a two poss game, and held the lead the rest of the way even though navarro tried his best hercules impression.
One thing I always take from these Spain games
Garbejosa hasn’t yet met a 3 he doesn’t like, regardless of the distance
time to go watch football
they don’t have shakeweight for men commercials on NFLHD

and to think
only a few years ago Rudy wowed us with his super dunk and sweet 3’s…and now it’s Nic, plus he can defend. My how times have changed
And the awesomeness of the chase-down blocks. And his highlight dunk.
