Good news - Jamal Crawford wants an extention or to be traded
I'm a big fan of Jamal and I'd love the Blazers to trade for him. I doubt the Hawks will extend him. They're not even a top five eastern conference team and if you're not in the top five you're just making up the numbers.
In all likelyhood it's splitsville for Melo and the Nugs so there is a high possibility that Billups could be available. He'll want to go to a contender... that sounds like the blazers to me. And even though we are division rivals if Melo jumps ship I doubt the Denver brass will be overly concerned.
And I freely admit I'm a fan of Kirk Hinrich who the Blazers could also get via a trade.
Personally I'd love to grab Crawford the most. He and Roy would make a sick backcourt. Plus Jamal would give us the added 3pt threat we need. We grab him, we grab the 2011 championship.
But maybe we can get more than one of the above listed players. The Blazers have the assets, the Euros playing overseas, the expiring contracts and future picks. Surely Cho can wheel and deal and get two players. I'm a Joel fan but I would trade him (along with whoever and some cash... Allen can afford it) with the hope that the other team buys him out and he'll resign with us. Cho said he won't be back until Nov/Dec so it would work.
Dre Miller and Rudy would have to be involved in any trade... possibly Elliot Williams and Patty Mills and even Bayless... who knows. And like I mentioned, we have three Euros playing overseason. A deal or two can definitely be done. But I'm not the GM. Non of us are. It's Cho and I want to see how good he really is!!!
Anyway, what deals would you offer for the above mentioned players... if they become available? Who would you prefer?
Go Blazers!!!

Oof.
Already fanshotted it, but I really don’t care as it has been a slow day on the edge. My stance on it:
Matthews already fits the role better. He plays infinitely better defense then Jamal, who is not known as a hustle player & I think Matthews has the upside to be the kind of shooter that Jamal is now.
How do you explain this to Wesley Matthews
and how does Cho explain to Paul Allen that he just traded for a guy who will play the same role we just spent some awefully big money for in terms of the role he will play(still a much better deal then Jamal who is much much older/doesn’t fit our teams new readjusted window)
Moment of clarity
It doesn't have to be crawford
Billups and Hinrich could possibly be available too.
Will any explaining have to be done to Matthews if we grab either of them, in particular Billups? I doubt it.

Billups has nothing to do with Matthews
Infact they would fit well together, As would Hinrich with Wes.
Moment of clarity
Isn't he more of an off guard than a point guard?
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
Also, he had a flukishly good year this last year.
I’d bet on him dropping back to his career averages, which aren’t very impressive.

Jamal Crawford
I see you got it below, but yeah. To clarify.
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
I don't want Jamal Crawford
A) Any player who demands either an extension or a trade has no place in this team’s culture. Especially a non-starter who’s been to the playoffs once in his career
B) Crawford has played for some of the worst teams in the last 10 years, and was a 6th man on a team that collapsed epically in the playoffs
C) He doesn’t fit a role on this team (as stated above, Wes plays the same position and does things we need more
D) Crawford is allergic to defense
E) He can’t play point unless he’s the only scorer on the floor
F) He’d rather chuck than share (I guess this could be married with D but oh well)
sorry if this is a little intense
Jamal Crawford isn’t bad at basketball, and he’s a good bench scorer. I just don’t think he’s a fit on our team
Perhaps a bit overly critical
A. He does share as evidenced by his 4 APG career avg.
B. He is from the NW so playing in PDX s/b a good spot for him (and his excellent relationship with Roy).
C. He is instant offense off the bench for us when needed, which I think is something we are lacking with Outlaw gone and Bayless still being inconsistent.
D. See C, and recall Vinnie Johnson “The Microwave” on those great Pistons teams which seems to be the type of team we are trying to be (good D, rebounding and clutch shooting).
There's more to sharing the ball
Than APG. My eye test states he takes a lot of mid-long jumpers early in the clock instead of letting the offense find a better shot. And I’m not sure how your B and my B intersect. I know he’s friends with Roy, but that doesn’t change the fact that he played a lead role on Isaiah’s Knicks and the trainwreck Warriors, then was a bench player on a team that got STEAMROLLED when they faced playoff-quality competition (the Bogut-less Bucks weren’t, and they took the series to 7 games). Between that and his desire to be either extended or traded, I just don’t think he’s a winner. Dave once said, “Asking to be traded to a contender is code for ’I’m a loser’” about Amare, and I think that it applies here too
Vinnie Johnson is much MUCH closer to Jerryd Bayless as a player.
then Jamal Crawford ! Jamal Crawford doesn’t play good D and doesn’t give the effort, at least Bayless can say he provides the latter.
BATMAN
haha
I like the 17 wins projection. Hollinger is WACK!

spare parts for quality
look…no one is gonna trade you a bmw for 4 old busted kias. why would anyone want a bunch of spare parts for a piece we could start? the only way lopsided trades seem to work in the nba is thru cap relief. we can offer some, but i wouldnt be enticed with our “euros” as large pieces to any trade. if they cant find a spot on our bench, why would atlanta think that they can earn a spot on theirs?

get another big but no wings/PGs
with Roy Miller Batum Matthews Bayless , Babbitt, Williams, Cunningham and for now Fernandez we have plenty of PG’s and wings. The only possible need I see is trying trying to get another big because while we have 3 centers that can play it’s fair to call all 3 injury prone. I’ve said before if Orlando wants to trade Daniel Orton for Rudy I’d make that move, not that I think Orton is that great but practicing against our bigs he could develop into the perfect long term back up for Oden.
I'd take Hinrich of the three
Billups three years ago, definitely, but now he’s getting a little long in the tooth. Plus we already have Mr Big Shot in Brandon.
If we are looking for a veteran point guard, then Hinrich is a safer bet than Crawford. I like Crawford, and wouldn’t mind if the Blazers picked him up as a bench player, but Kirk’s heady play and defense would help us more than another shooter.

Yeah, Kirk Hinrich makes more sense than Jamal Crawford.
Oh, and even though Chauncey Billups would be sweet to have now in spite of being past his prime, I doubt that Denver will trade him. Even post-‘melo, I’d expect the Nuggets to retool rather than flat-out rebuild.
I'd rather take Hinrich too
We can get him for less. But it all depends on how creative Cho is. I wouldn’t give up Bayless in any package though.
