the best basketball game in history
What is the best game in the history of basketball for you?
In Spain many people speak of the USA-Spain 2008 Olympic final. Rudy´s dunk... Spain came in marking up to five points when there were five minutes remaining.
In U.S. I have read Lakers-Blazers game seven semifinals of the NBA 2000. Bad remembrance for the blazers fans.
For me is the game four of the ACB final 1995. Unicaja Málaga-FCBarcelona
What is yours? A question from Spain.

That Sunday afternoon in 1977.
Blazers 109, Sixers 107.

I was 13 years old
With the blessing of our parents, me and some buddies skipped school to go to the parade. It doesn’t get any better than that.
Me too!
I went to the parade with a mental list of which Blazers’ hands I was going to shake, but once it started there were such crowds that you couldn’t get near any of the players. I shook Bill Schonely’s hand, though. That’s my ’77 memory. It was great.
aw man.....
i was 10. we had just moved across the country to Washington DC, and that victory gave me a little cred in my new circles. i remember playing at court in a playground near my school and when we were down 0-2, a bunch of the kids were laughing about how funny “The Center” looked, and asking “where’s Portland? Where’re you FROM?? Cowboy!!!”
then, a week or so later, it was all “WOW! damn man! how’d they DO that??”
it really seemed to be part of how i was accepted in my new home… so yes, June 5, 1977 will likely always be the Best Game In History to me.
I'd still honk once!

To me, that will be the game when:
- Roy goes at Kobe and the officiating is even, so they can truly have a showdown.
- Oden plays at least as many minutues or more than Bynum and outplays him.
- Aldridge is at least close to Gasol’s performance for the game. And at one pont, Gasol flops, and Aldridge just looks at him like he’s crazy.
- Batum blocks Artest’s shot twice in the same possession, then sticks a dagger three at the other end with Ron-Ron all over him.
- Streamers fall from the Rose Garden rafters because Portland has just eliminated the L*kers in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals at home.
- And Steve Blake, in his purle and gold, immediately rushes over to congratulate his former teammates.
From an emotional standpoint, winning the championship would be HUGE. But it wouldn’t mean nearly as much if Portland doesn’t have an amazingly emotional victory over the L*kers to get there. In fact, I really feel that defeating the L*kers may be necessary for Portland to have the emotional lift to hang with whoever makes it out of the east. If Portland makes it to the finals in the next three years, and their path their means knocking out say San Antonio, Oklahoma City, and Dallas, I don’t think they feel nearly as invincible as if they knock out L.A.

you forgot
Batum dunking on Gasol and flashing three fingers.
yep
it is highly likely that the best basketball game ever played is one that very few people ever saw.
My feeling is that the intra-squad scrimmages between the 1992 USA Mens Basketball team (which nobody saw because they weren’t televised) probably had some of the finest basketball ever played.
yep
MJ and Barkley used to say that. Supposedly MJ went at Drexler hard!

of course, I was 1 when that happened
as for best game I have seen, it was a regular season game against the bucks in the early 2000s
blazers were down late, patterson had a big dunk, then pippen hit the game tying 2 (toenail on the line)
then in OT, Damon hit the winning 3 with .2 seconds left, then dale davis deflected the inbound pass—game over.
patterson and davis starting sprinting off the court making some weird milking a cow hand gesture

that was a good one
there were some great games in the 1990 semis against the Spurs, as well
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
the game against Chicago where Hollins stole the ball and scored at the buzzer
Kermit Washington lob to BRB—nuff said

Mine is actually pretty current
The Houston game with the last second shot by Roy.
I’m looking for even better ones in the future, but that’s the one that currently sticks out in my mind.
"We get to hit arms! Cool!"
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-39-135/On-Playoff-Experience.html
That was absolutely incredible
Twist after twist within a matter of seconds…Roy goes from hero, to goat, to legend
If that had been a playoff game it would be one of the greatest ever
I submit Duke vs. Kentucky in the 1992 East Regional Finals…104-103 on Laettner’s famous turnaround. Thomas Hill crying. And the game itself was a superbly played heavyweight slugfest involving a bunch of good future NBA players

2005 Maui Invitational
Gonzaga tops Michigan State 109-106 in triple OT. This was a preseason invitational, so not really a game of consequence (not even the tourney championship game mind you), but for some reason it was the first game that popped in my mind. I know that there are lots of bigger games that I didn’t see, and others I saw that I didn’t have a rooting interest in, but I will never forget this one. Game recap linked below…

Holding out for Hedo
The 1999 Gonzaga - Uconn Elite Eight game was also a great one
I’ll always think that goes down as the REAL national championship game… Zags came so close…

Holding out for Hedo
oooh
what about that Syracuse UConn 6 OT game? That was an epic battle as well but if I remember correctly the actual finish was not that climactic (the 6th OT that is)

NCAA Final: Villanova going ~100% from the field to beat Ewing
And win me the dorm pool.

ahhh yes that game was insane
one of the few in this thread that I’ve seen
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
1976, Phoenix vs. Boston, Game 5.
A three overtime game and it’s just too bad that the Suns didn’t quite have enough to beat the Celtics that year. It is amazing to me how many of the players in this game are now assistant coaches all around the league. Head coaches too. – Elgin

Garfield Heard's 40 foot turn around heave at the buzzer, hits nothing but net
I still remember Alvin Adams, great passing big man

Best Regular season
Blazers vs Celtics 1992. In Boston during Bird’s twilight years.
Bird tallied 49 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists and 4 steals
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLwQtr3DSCQ
Double OT. Free throw shooting killed Portland down the stretch. Bird’s three to send it into OT was insane. Clyde had a monster game. Just a pleasure to watch even though Portland gives the game away with 20 seconds left in regulation. Really one of the best Bird games I’ve ever seen, especially considering his age at the time.
Similar occurrence in Boston in 1983
Danged parqueted floors and their weird bounces!

first nba game i can remember watching
was 7 years old, watching with my parents, on military base in El Salvador.
Oh how I loved NBA on NBC

Winter 1980 (either Jan or Feb)
Brookings High School girls basketball team vs. Sioux Falls Lincoln.
Brookings, the home team, was down by 16 with 4 minutes to play. But the Brookings team refused to give up. They scored, then forced a turnover, then scored, then forced a missed shot, etc. They ate away at the lead while we in the stands were screaming in support.
Down by 2 with the ball, Brookings brought it upcourt. A missed shot drew a loud, collective moan of frustration from the stands. Lincoln only needed to kill the last 10 seconds of the game to escape with a win. Brookings fouled and the Lincoln player went to the line. First free throw – missed. Second free throw – missed – and Brookings got the rebound.
After a quick timeout, Brookings took a quick shot – and made it! It was all tied up with 3 or 4 seconds left. In the stands, we were going crazy! Lincoln tried to inbound the ball, but couldn’t get it in in time and was called for a violation. Brookings ball. A shot was hoisted just before the buzzer – and it went in! Brookings won in the most unfathomable way possible.
Considering that most girls basketball teams only score 40-70 points in a game, to be down by 16 that late had to have seemed a nearly insurmountable challenge for the girls – we spectators certainly didn’t expect that they’d be able to come back. But they did. And I yelled myself horse cheering them on. For a young high school freshman playing trumpet in the Pep Band, it was an unforgettable evening.

I pick it up about once a year
The tuning slide has been unmovable for a couple of years (I’m not sure if it’s rusted or just really stuck), and I would need to fix that before doing any serious playing.
I can still play the Star Wars main theme, though….
worst basketball game ever
I remember reading in a Guiness book of world records a high school girls game that ended in a 0-0 tie after multiple OTs and was decided by a coin flip
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Blazers - Chicago in 78
Blazers down 4 with 13 seconds. Lukas scores with 10 seconds left. Gross tips the inbound at mid court and Hollins races down to score with 6 left. Inbound at mid court again and again a tipped inbound and a couple of passed and score with 2 seconds left. Chicago gets no shot off and Blazers win. They were playing this on the news over and over for days with Bill Shonely’s call.

does it have to be a close game?
i fondly remember the blazers hammering the lakers in game 2 of 2000 series in LA
thanks to a 28-8 3rd quarter

we haven't mentioned "the perfect quarter"
Blazers vs. Spurs and it must have been in the early 1990s. I think Rod Strickland was the Spurs point guard at that time.

Jefferson HS vs Oak Hill Academy
2002. Jeff had the Lincoln brothers and Thomas Gardner. Oak Hill had Carmelo.
Best live basketball game I have ever seen. The Demos eventually lost, but the Gardner vs. Anthony battle at the end of the game was great. Curtis Lincoln was the best player on the floor in that game.
i know we are talking about basketball
but this is the greatest game ever

Two jump out at first...
I was so young I can’t remember any of the details of the game… but I do remember Billy Ray throwing it down at the buzzer and my little brother and I jumping up and down! Nice of them to run it on the broadcast for the next two decades…
That double OT game against San Antonio in the ’90 playoffs was a great game…

My favorite game I ever watched did not involve the Blazers
Pacific University Boxers (5-6) vs. #13 Puget Sound Loggers (12-0), January of 2007. Pacific hadn’t beaten Puget Sound, who was known for their incredible fast break and smothering full court trap, in 8 years. The coach for Pacific employed a brilliant strategy: DON’T score. More specifically, don’t score right away.
Puget Sound thrived on the opponent taking quick shots on a 2-on-1 or 3-on-1 break, then quickly rebounding/inbounding and scoring on the other end to keep the breakneck tempo up. What Pacific did was simply pull the ball out on every fast break opportunity and let the shot clock run down before attempting to score. For most of the first half as Pacific held a narrow the Boxers’ home crowd bemoaned all of the lost fast break opportunities, not really understanding that Puget Sound was getting frustrated and reckless because they were unable to pull away.
In the second half Pacific held on and won 77-71 (Puget Sound averaged 113). My roommate was the #2 rebounder in that game and pulled down the final rebound as the crowd, myself included, stormed the court.
"Stalls are for horses"
that’s what the old signs used to read in the NCAA before the shot clock was implemented
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
They weren't stalling
just not fast breaking. I don’t think they had a single shot clock violation.
Think of it more like Portland vs. Phoenix to the extreme.
Portland would not want to get into a track meet with Phoenix because that is a battle you almost certainly can’t win. Instead Portland would want to be methodical.
