Cho ked?
It would seem that the great new management regime has mishandled their first chance to help the team. Cho apparently has known for a month that Rudy wasn't coming back yet waited until what value he had was gone. Maybe Cho was still waiting for permission from the Vulcans to hire more of his buddies in Portland. I think Cho is in way over his head and the team is going to suffer for it. I'm not excited about the near future for the Blazers.

Rudy is a non -issue to me. What ever ends up happening with him will have no negative impact on the… If we get nothing and he’s just gone I’m OK with that.
GO BLAZERS!!!
I think you're over-reading the situation
Rudy didnt have much trade value and I would venture a guess you didnt like the Cho signing when it happened. Its easy to pile on if you don’t already like the person but what were you expecting to get from Rudy?
Consequently, even when at his best, Rudy is a small part of this team. He isn’t a make or break player and therefore it’s unlikely that his trade or lack there of is a reason to be down on the team.

Disagree.
Rudy has been grumbling since last year. The ship sailed long ago on “selling high” with ol’ Diapers Fernandez.
Whatever Cho squandered is nothing compared to what was squandered by not seeing the writing on the wall when he started bitching last summer, and that’s on KP and PA/Vulcan…

Mostly it's on PA
Apparently KP was getting trade offers last offseason, but PA shut them down.
yeah, that's what Jason Filippi said last March
there was a deal for Rudy at the deadline, but Paul shot it down because he still liked Rudy
I suspect Cho isn’t going to deal Rudy for anything less than an offer that Allen rubber-stamps. So I’d lay off Rich in this area, unless you want to fault KP as well
I was interested to hear Jason Quick mention Kirk Hinrich’s name yesterday. Evidently the Blazers had interest in him (again) around draft day but the deal fell through. Not sure which side pulled the plug on that one

just because
Rudy wants to be traded doesn’t mean the Blazers should make a less than acceptable trade. It’s disappointing, though, that the whole Rudy thing is not going to materialize here. He seemed to have so much potential when he first came on the scene in Portland.
Absolutely.
They have a team to run. Cho not allowing Rudy to strong-arm his way out of his contract or onto the court is admirable. Having such a ridiculous, emotional attempt at negotiating during your first months on the job has got to be a pain in the arse.
Isn't the truth somewhere in the middle
Cho didn’t screw this up any more than KP or PA did. Everybody has some blame here. I do think that Cho could have anticipated that Rudy’s trade value was not likely to go up. He should have made the best deal available and moved past this Rudy issue. Is the best thing for the team to get drawn into a dirty fight with Rudy, get killed by foreign news media, look bad to future foreign players and eventually get nothing for Rudy?
We can’t say if Cho screwed up because we don’t know what offers were turned down, but it almost certainly would have been better for the team to move him before his value had bottomed out like it has now.

The best deal available
may still be bad.
Rudy in Europe is probably better than Rudy in Boston, unless we’re getting something worthwhile back. We want to win a championship, we don’t want to hand a possible championship rival the player that would kill us. And Rudy would be very, very good backing up Ray Allen on that team, IMO. It might keep them in major contention for 2-3 more years, depending on how Garnett holds up. The danger point for them as far as slowing down is Allen, and Rudy might step in pretty well in his place.

That’s true, but that time was on KP’s watch
Cho isn’t going to trade Rudy without Paul Allen’s approval. Rich is an employee, he can’t make unilateral decisions

right
so, as soon as I read Filippi’s interview in March I knew it was Allen who has been “keeping” Rudy in Portland for so long. It’s up to the GM to make a proposal and then sell it to the owner (at least a hands-on owner, like Paul) and neither KP nor RC have been able to do this re: Rudy to PA’s satisfaction, so far

no problem
I said back in March…KP shouldn’t be the target of fan displeasure re: the fact that Rudy wasn’t traded, earlier. As we’re finding out with Cho, if this was an easy deal that Paul Allen would agree to do, then it would’ve been done by now

Then maybe a trade would have happened. Now he’s worth nothing, and considering that he just shot himself in the foot, I’m perfectly ok with letting him rot on the bench/back home for two years while he rides out his contract. This was all on you Rudy.

Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
Actually
Cho’s first mishandling of the Blazer situation was not to re-sign Juwan Howard. Cho had 18 hours to arrange for Howard to be brought back to the Rose City and the fans who loved him so much – plenty of time to make a deal for a minimum salary player – but he dropped the ball and let Juwan sign with the heat. Yes, the same Miami heat who have so many other reasons to be disliked.
I’m afraid that the Blazers have a GM who is simply afraid to sign anyone. What’s the team going to do when it has less than 12 players on the roster and a GM who won’t spend money on any new players?

If Storyteller said it
Then it must be absolute truth. I have just changed my opinion on all things Juwan and Cho.
Which brings me to an important point. It’s a waste of a great first name (Juwan) to follow it with something boring like “Howard”. Names like “Howard” should be preceded with names like, say, “Dwight” or something.
If you are going to have a first name like Juwan, you should change your surname to something good like Cho. Juwan Cho. That’s a guy who would provide some toughness in the low post.
I think this is top analysis. I just hope that Juwan doesn’t read it and change his name while he’s with Miami. I want to hate them, and it would be hard to hate a team that had Juwan Cho.

Rudy's camp blew this.
How are we going to get anything for Rudy now? He’s (or his agent) is ruining his reputation now, showing him to be nothing but a prima donna punk. They should’ve kept their mouths shut and let Cho work a deal.
I think Cho is doing the right thing. As a young GM he is letting people know he will not be pushed around.
A few things...
is will Rudy tell the quality players like Rubio who actually has a chance in the NBA to not come over? Sergio is another failure story… We should have traded Sergio+Rudy at the height of their brief “Spanish connection” :\ Hindsight is 20/20.
Cho should be pursuing Ronny Turiaf imo, maybe look to flip Joel. I want to see Turiaf in a half court offense instead of Don Nelson’s hot mess. He’s a great insurance down low to contend with the likes of LA/Dallas.
Moment of clarity
Cho should be pursuing Ronny Turiaf imo, maybe look to flip Joel.
Przy >>> Turiaf. “The scout” was on with Wheels yesterday and was asked about Ronny, he said that RT is a good locker room presence, but nothing about RT’s game. I found that amusing

Much too early.
The Fernandez cake had already been baked when Cho came on board, and there was nothing on the table given the league already knew the story. This has been obvious for the last month. The Blazers could not even acquire a 1st round pick from the demand list Rudy had already presented them with, which left some rather meaningless players who we had no use for on the present team, and who would add no value to a future trade that would get us a productive player. We are not, after all, in the position of needing injury insurance to ride the bench or play in the D league, which was all that was on the table. We are already going into the season with a full complement at every position. We already have 8 guards, but need only six. Rudy has been excess from the moment we signed Matthews, and the league knows it. We also picked up Williams at almost the same spot in the draft we first picked up Rudy, and in signing him, will have a third guard to play the SG slot behind Roy and Matthews. On top of this, we have the ability to slide Bayless over into that slot much as we did last year.
It’s a little out of line to start pretending that somehow Cho should’ve done what KP could not do or did not do before he came on board. The bottom line is that the league is being asked to trade for a player who made it clear that he’d really rather be in Spain – not the NBA, and whose demands both to the Blazers and the coaches and GM’s of any team we might try to trade him to. Such players have little or no value to anyone – given that we have the player dictating to the NBA under the threat of leaving if he doesn’t like how the next coach or team uses him.
Neither a new team or the Blazers has any guarantee that he will stay for more than two years. In fact, unless the contract they offer in two years can match what a Euro team will pay him – they have quite the opposite. We’d no more trade for such a player if he were on another team, let alone give up any value for him, than they would.

Agreed.
This needed to be last years deal – at the time the family left. In any case, I would also hope that most get the other side of this, which is that Rudy and his agent have decided what is best for Rudy. And what’s best for Rudy is to go back to Europe and pick up that $5 million to $6 million contract which was on the table before we convinced him to come to the NBA for pocket change. His agent is fully aware of what he’s doing. The strategy – one can rest assured – was talked over in detail before the public side of it surfaced. They knew, from the moment they put a demand list of teams on the table, that there was little liklihood that there’d be a trade with those same teams. In the first case teams likely to reach for Rudy were left off the list (most of the NBA), and in the second case, the agent is wise in the ways of the NBA, and knew that they could not place demands on the handful of teams left as it pertains to how Rudy would be used – because no GM or coach would tolerate such conditions. In essence, they gave a semblence of being open to a trade, when in fact, they had only one goal – and that was to get Rudy out of the NBA and back to Spain – where he could get a much bigger payday.
So, it may be about the Blazers to us – but it’s not to them. Portland no longer has a place or a need for Rudy, and the rest of the league isn’t going to trade anything of value for a player who wants to go home. And home is not America.
by Eben Calder on Aug 19, 2010 12:27 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
As far as I'm concerned, this is now about principle
Portland has gotten bang for their buck from Fernandez. He’s cost Bayless some PT and he’ll continue to cost them bad PR for awhile but he’s not needed on the roster. Allen and Cho can’t afford to release him, because that sets a bad precedent (if a player complains, we’ll give him what he wants and make the problem go away) So if Rudy doesn’t report the Blazers will suspend him and fine him and let the chips fall where they may re: his future and the fallout in Europe.
Andy Miller’s job is to find a NBA trade partner who will give the Blazers what they want in exchange for Fernandez, or to hold Rudy’s hand for the next 2 years while he doesn’t play pro ball in the prime of his career
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Interesting post
It’s an effective counterargument to all of the “Rudy’s agent is an idiot” comments that I’ve seen.
Seems to me, you have repeatedly tried to blame this on KP, and I think that is unreasonable.
First, there are plenty of rumors that PA was unwilling to part with Rudy last simmer.
Second, the Blazers clearly needed 3 pt shooting. Trading Rudy immediately after he set the rookie record wouldn’t have been easy. By pre-season, Batum was already hurt ,and it would have been even harder to trade him. Then Rudy’s back was hurt and the team’s roster was in such turmoil that it was nearly impossible to do anything.
Obviously in hindsight, it would have been best to trade him last summer, or it would have made sense to trade him before this year’s draft, given how much was going on behind the scenes, we have no idea who was making decisions in the months leading up to KP’s ultimate firing. Blaming him is convenient, but i don’t think there is enough information to justify the accusation.

Your usual good sense.
The part I have a hard time understanding is why Rudy and Miller have played this the way they have. Why go public? Why publicly restrict the Blazers to three potential trade partners? Why demand to be released and try to back the Blazers into a corner when they have absolutely nothing to loose just telling Rudy to go pout in Spain?
It seems that they have done everything possible to destroy his own trade value, and everything possible to make it difficult for the Blazers to give him what he wants.

Too early to judge Cho based on Rudy yet. This still may turn out good.
"What people need to know is that those pictures were taken a year and a half ago, and I've grown since then." - Greg Oden
I won't judge Cho regardless of what happens with Rudy.
I think this is up to Paul Allen now, and it just depends on how annoyed he will be as time passes. That will probably limit Cho’s options at any given time.
He may want to make a point that players won’t push him around and tell Cho that he has to get at least a top XX pick. Or he could tell Cho to teach Rudy a lesson and don’t trade him for anything less than a good rotation player (i.e. as part of a package) because he really prefers that Rudy just sit in Spain for a couple years. Or he could eventually get fed up hearing about Rudy and tell Cho to take a 2nd round pick and spend his time on more important deals.
