It doesn’t appear that statistics on dunks have been kept very long. Dwight Howard led the league 4 years in a row, probably 5, but I’m not sure where he landed in 2009-2010. I think he was around 3.5 per game midway through 2007-2008 but ended that year 3.2+ with a total of 269 dunks for the year. He had 202 in the 2008-2009 campaign (2.55 dunks per game).
Oden’s first year is 2008-2009 since he was out the year before with MF surgery. I doubt it’s fair to make any kind of comparison, so let me jump right in and be unfair. Here’s how that year stacks up to Howard for the same year. And with that being the only year to compare, this data is without doubt irrefutable.
Here are the numbers for 2008-2009:
games played, minutes per game, total minutes, and total dunks.
Howard:
79 games, 35.7 minutes/game, 2820.3 total minutes, 202 dunks
Oden:
61 games, 21.5 minutes/game, 1311.5 total minutes, 99 dunks
Adjusting Oden’s minutes to 2820.3 for the year to match Howard (and extrapolating) gives him a total of 212.8934 dunks in comparison to Howards 202 dunks.
Hence, Oden beats "Howard the Dunk" by 10.8934 dunks, and makes Oden the indisputable Dunk Champion for the 2008-2009 season. (Extrapolation was done in a Windows 7 operating environment. Dunks were taken to the fourth digit in the newest version of excel. Unquestionably, this data is far more accurate than hollinger’s PER)
When the 2009-2010 data is available I won’t be taking the time to compute numbers. And it wouldn’t be worth it since this data already proves that Oden is the clear winner, this year and every year.
Google is not my friend when it comes to dunk statistics. Spending not more than 25 minutes on this research, but not less than 10 minutes, A 5 dunk per game average seems like it would be very high. Nonetheless, what do you think of the up and coming year, will Oden be a dunk monster?
Me personally, I think Oden will be out to prove himself this year. He also has a little bit of a feisty demeanor which is hidden by his soft spoken voice. I remember him elbowing LeBron at midcourt when he probably shouldn’t have, and it wasn’t the first time this happened – almost like he was saying “You’re not the king in my book.”
