Seriously -- where's the love for Scottie Pippen? Sure, he never brought us a title, but he sure came close. And even past his prime, he was one of the best basketball players to ever wear a Blazer jersey. Maybe we're all in a state of collective amnesia of all things "Jailblazers," which encompasses all of the Sheed Era as well as the darker years when we were terrible. Maybe we're still in denial and pretending that 4th quarter meltdown against LA never happened.
Yes, Pippen will always be known for his years (and six titles) as a Chicago Bull. I know I spent many of my early years as a Blazer fan reviling him. I even came up with what I thought at the time was the most genius derogatory nickname of all time: Snotty Pimple (although I won't be shocked if anyone else who frequents these forums called him that, either.) I despised him just as much as I despised Jordan, and I maintain (as most pundits are this weekend) that he was just as integral to those Bulls titles (including besting our Blazers in 1992) as Jordan.
Still, I think the guy at least deserves a thread on the BEdge. Share your favorite Pippen memories below, or your least favorite moments of him beating us. I, for one, loved the veteran savvy and steady leadership that he brought to our Blazers during his tenure here, and quickly forgave his transgressions as the former "Snotty Pimple." I was always impressed by his unflappable will to win and his dedication to all of the little things that helped make that happen -- Pippen is and will always be, in my opinion, the ultimate "intangibles guy."
Finally, an aspiration for this current crop: may our current SF prospect, Mr. Nicolas Batum, live up to the Pippen comparisons that have been bandied about since his arrival. If they do, maybe he'll be looking at a similar ceremony many years down the line ...
