Blazers Scrubdown: Matchup #6
The Blazersedge Scrubdown marches on. If you don't know what's going on, read the block-quote in this post. Basically we've made a bracket out of Blazers nobody mentions as key figures but who were notable, however briefly and for whatever reason, during their Portland tenure. We're narrowing it down to figure out our favorite lesser-known player of all time. You can use any criteria you wish in casting your vote for one of today's two players, though emphasis should remain on their time as a Blazer. Leave a comment below with your favored players' name in the subject line and whatever explanation you wish in the body of the post.

Cooper
Owens ranks right down there with Norris in terms of memorability….

I completely agree with blacknoiseNW .. it's Wayne Cooper!
Dave,
I think this is the easiest choice yet.
i have got to go with wayne cooper because i don’t even know who tom owens is. at least cooper had the distinction of being part of one of the most lop-sided trades the blazers ever made and he played well for the nuggets.
i second that. go cooper

Coop
Sorry, Tom. I might have picked you over some other guys, but not over Coop – good guy and part of the magic years…
Never heard of Coop?
How about Mark Bryant or Alaa Abdelnaby? Ya gotta know the Coop!

Bryant was the second coming of Karl Malone - until he wasn't

Coop
a) his basketball card was the first Blazer I ever owned.
b) as a kid, I always felt bad for him because he never played.
c) I don’t know who Tom Owens is.
Though I guess...
…Tom Owens looks like someone who would be piloting and X-wing.

I can't believe Tom Owens
is going to go down like this. You young whippersnappers better just wait until the old folks get up for their Geritol and bathroom trip at 5:00 a.m. Then the midnight tide will start to turn!

Tom Owens
Best hair ever and he shares my birthday. He had one decent season as a Blazer and for a year and a half looked pretty good in Dr Jacks offense.

Wayne Cooper!
Tom’s trade value was important to the Blazers, but I’m pretty sure it didn’t work out so well, so that cancels that out.
Enough is enough
Owens towers over Wayne. The guy was very fluid and in his day there was strong consensus that he was the best back up center in the league, tragically for #32 and the Blazers he started too many games, which makes me wonder how his name is tarnished by being in the scrubdown in the first place.
Coop, bless his heart was one of the stiffest lumberingest most predictablist Blazers of all time. TO torched people, Wayne Cooper, didn’t.

Tom Owens easily
Tom replaced the Big redhead and steadied the ship averaging 18.5 points and 9.0 rebounds the year after Walton’s injury. Loved Cooper but he wasnt’ near the player Owens was.

Tom Owens
Isn’t there some kind of bonus for playing for 9 teams in 6 years?
Tom Owens no question about it
i’m looking at both there trading cards and i can’t believe what it says about Owens.
“Tom led the trail blazers in points and rebounds last season and was second in assists with 301, He shot .548% for a personal pro high and a new all time portland club mark. He started each game last year” Thats getting it done Oden take notes…
TO all the way
Big Tom had ALL STAR numbers back in the late 70’s when Walton went down. He’d be a $10 Mil a year player today.
Plus he was later traded to Indiana for a future 1st round…which turned out to be the pick that the Blazers passed on Jordan.
Cooper
Wayne was injured less. Other than that, their games were nearly identical. Wayne was a better shot blocker too.
GOP in HD
Injured less?
In four seasons as a Blazer, Tom played in 82, 82, 79, & 76 games.
Coop
Don’t remember Owens. Everyone loved the Coop chant…
Hard to believe...
I guess it’s a generational thing. Those of us who were rooting on the Blazers when Tom stepped up and tried to fill Bill Walton’s huge shoes can’t easily forget his determination and courage. One of the all-time great gutsy Blazers. Mark me down for Tom Owens.
Tom Owens
Actually making a rational argument here: Tom Owens averaged 18.5 points a game in 1978-1979. Here’s a short list of Blazers who never did that:
Derek Anderson
Billy Ray Bates
Bob Gross
Lloyd Neal
Scottie Pippen
Dave Twardzik
Arvydas Sabonis
Larry Steele
Damon Stoudamire
Buck Williams
He also led the Blazers in points and rebounds that year. The only Blazers to have done that besides Owens are Zach Randolph, Mychal Thompson, Rasheed Wallace, and Sidney Wicks. Tom Owens was legit.
Coop!
Two tours with the club and I’ll never forget the honest tears he shed as a veteran leader when the team snagged a spot in the finals.

Tough one...Owens...
Owens was a pretty decent center. I don’t know if he was better than Cooper. Based on career here? I’m going with Owens and he also get’s a little support from me because he labored here as the unfortunate guy that had to step in and try to be our center in the absence of Walton. I think he garnered some negativity simply because he was not Bill Walton. So just to be nice, I’ll give him my vote over Coop…whom I also liked.
