Travis Outlaw signs 5 yr deal with Nets
Forward Travis Outlaw has agreed to a five-year, $35 million deal with the Nets, his agent, Bill Duffy, told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher.
The 25-year-old Outlaw averaged 8.7 points and 3.6 rebounds in 23 games for the Los Angeles Clippers after being acquired as part of a trade that sent Marcus Camby to the Portland Trail Blazers. In 11 games for Portland last season, Outlaw averaged 9.9 points and 3.5 rebounds.
Drafted in the first round by Portland in 2003, Outlaw has averaged 9.5 points and 3.4 rebounds in seven NBA seasons.

Good for Travis
I assume that’s a good deal from his point of view. Personally, I could do a lot with $35 mil. We’ve been wanting to remodel the upstairs hall way, for instance.

Well depending how the deal was done that's 7 million a year

Precisely.
It’s being reported as a flat-rate deal, no raises. So exactly $7 million per year for 5 years.
Travis turns 26 in two month. Three years from now, he may be a valuable chip as an athletic player still in his prime on a two year deal at $7 million per.
NJ is slightly overpaying for him now, but if we assume the new CBA isn’t going to change player salaries DRASTICALLY, he will also be a future “chip” for them.

I hear you
I could definitely do a lot with $35M too. I could finally get that iMac for my wife… if I saved up a little.

Give me $1 million and I would only have to work part time for the rest of my life. It all depends on your investments.

Not really

Seems like a good deal for Trout. That's awesome. There are few guys in the NBA I like more as people than Trout.

sweet deal!
Good thing we traded him too because he is probably only worth 3 million a year to the Blazers.
I'm thinking this qualifies as intergallactic compensation for Travis.

Wow! Seems like a bit much, but I guess not considering how much other guys are getting.
I still wish you were a Blazer Travis! Best glue guy and team player. He’s also one of the few people I like.

Reunited with KP?
This is KP’s way of stealing the whole Blazers squad slowly… without even being the GM.

Speaking of KP....
How good is the Camby trade looking now? Would we have been willing to give Blake $16M? Miller is probably a better value on a shorter deal and Blazers still hoping that Bayless earns that starting PG spot. I’m almost certain they would not have matched the Laker’s offer. No way they even consider matching this offer for Trout.
Marcus instead of 2 guys we would have lost without compensation. NICE!! And if Thorn negotiated this deal for NJ it’s a good thing he’s not been on our short list of GM candidates. I’m happy for Travis but… $35M for an inefficient one-dimensional player. I hope it works out for Trout and NJ by this could look like a terrible deal in a few years.

Why did the Clippers make that deal?
Had they not traded Camby, the odds were that he was going to resign there. (Not wanting to move his kids again.) Now the Clipps have nothing to show for the deal. At worst, they could have sign and traded Camby to the team of his choice; if they didn’t think that he fit long term.
Because they are the Clippers
They were convinced he would return there this summer. So they thought they were getting a free look at Blake and Outlaw with no risk. Just like they thought they actually had a shot at Lebron this summer.
I think the whole thing is that the Clippers think that they are the L*kers but with some bad luck, and next year the luck will be better. They seem to perpetually act that way at least.

we were all thinking he would be an MLE guy max. This summer sure is crazy

he totally got overpaid but I'm happy for him
I mean, Andre Miller is making $7M a year at a much more important position and he’s still a very productive player
But since it’s the Nets overpaying him I’m happy for the guy. He and his brother are good people

Its clear now
that If you are an NBA, you really need to try to time it so you are a FA when there also big names available. Its clear the teams cleared cap space to take a run at the big 6, and all this cap space was burning holes in teams pockets. So its being spent by overpaying for marginal guys so GM look like they go something for their grand strategy. Max Money for Rudy Gay and Boozer? crazy. Glad outlaw and blake were able to cash in, still shocked at the dollars being thrown around.
I'll Say It: NJN Massively Over-payed
This definitely lends credence to the idea that the best value on the floor is to be found in rookie scale contracts. I remember that the draft of Dante was generally regarding as a Travis replacement. I know personally that I thought Dante could make up for Outlaw in areas of defense—particularly team defense—effort, and rebounding. Certainly Outlaw is the better player… but is his value over replacement (Dante) that much higher? I don’t think so.
I wondered if torched the NJN at some point. This last season, he didn’t evel play against them. The season before he scored 13pts in both games he played against NJN going 4-9 and 4-10. Hardly $35 M stuff.
This was a very confusing contract to me. I’m certainly glad it wasn’t with the Blazers.

Heh, I’ve been wondering when Value Over Replacement Player would make it’s way from baseball to basketball.

Happy for Trav.
I wanna see him succeed, totally deserves the opportunity. May be a bit much, but really couldn’t go to a nicer guy.
At least now everytime his stupid foot is on the line when shooting a 3 pointer, or he is attempting to dribble the ball up the court, or when he takes a hefty shot up that may or may not win the game, at least I won’t have a near coronary since it won’t matter to me.

In the context of other deals handed out so far
I think it’s a pretty good deal for NJ. They were seriously hurting for a forward, and Travis can play the 3 and excels (offensively) at the 4 as well. Not only that, but he’s immediately their best or close to best 3 pt shooter (I know, that’s pretty sad) but still, an upgrade is an upgrade. It’s somewhat of a gamble to go 5 years, but considering he will get starters minutes, they must figure he still has enough upside/potential to improve enough to make it a decent gamble.
I'm happy for trout
was kinda of hoping beyond hope that we would get him back somehow…he should do well there.
