yup, I just saw this.

pretty wild, I guess they’re really making a push for Lebron, or just bracing for the denial…

both

they kept a max slot for him, but signing Boozer was a great move for them either way, once Wade/Bosh were gone

Sweet...

At least we’ll have a shot to make the finals.

It is interesting though…We thought that we were past building through the draft, but that appears to have been our best long-term option, even this year. As we have seen, no Western team has been able to do much but lose their best players to free agency. We’ll be better off with young role-players than with a bunch of aging, mediocre, overpaid role-players. And it gives us a shot at making big trades for the future.

by HailOden! on Jul 7, 2010 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I just don't see us passing the Lakers for a few years...

unless Kobe or Pau get injured… or both Bynum and Odom get injured… maybe though.

by Escrote on Jul 7, 2010 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

well, that's one way to look at it

the other way is that, of the teams in the Western Conference, we will stand the best chance to beat the L*kers. I think this season might be a great battle in the WC between the past-their peak L*kers and the up and coming/here and now Blazers and Thunder.

Ryan Gomes: forever a Blazer in our hearts.

by musicdaniel on Jul 7, 2010 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions

true that...

I mean it would have been a fluke if we had made it to the finals by upsetting 3 teams in a row but making it to the finals by upsetting one team is just that (an upset).

by Escrote on Jul 7, 2010 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't forget the Nugs and Mavs

I think we’re better than both teams, especially if Melo leaves this season or next, but there’s no doubt they’re still a threat. If Denver gets Karl back, keeps Anthony, and signs another big man, they would be tough.

If Cuban can pull in a decent sidekick for Dirk (Monta Ellis as JET 2.0, anyone?), and their rookies develop, they are still a contender and a threat to the L*kers. There’s no doubt he’ll do something; he has too many trading pieces not to, even though he’s all but missed out on the big name FA’s.

Also, I think it’s too early to completely overlook the Rockets and the Spurs, though they have some big injury question marks.

by HailOden! on Jul 7, 2010 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

ugh bron bosh and wade started west. amare and boozer are the only 2 that are gone.

and next year youll see robin lopez step up to fill the hole for the suns and milsap will do the same in utah.

did the east get better? yeah, a little. But did they also get worse by signing amare and joe johnson to max contracts? yeah. ohhhhh yeah

Time to see what LeBron is about

Loyalty: Cleveland
Winning: Chicago
Himself: New York

I honestly can’t see Miami or New Jersey as viable anymore. Does he really want to share the spotlight with Wade in South Beach, which is already Wade’s turf? New Jersey I suppose is trying to split the “winning” and “himself” angles above, but he’s getting less winning than Chicago and less self than New York. I just can’t see it.

I think the New York rumors are a smoke screen.

I think LeBron’s big ego will force him to stay in Cleveland because if he leaves it will look like he’s running away because of failure.

whose failure?

His or management’s? I don’t think he’s running away from Cleveland due to HIS failure nearly as much as just the fact that they couldn’t put him with more talent. Everyone they put around him to win was a has-been (thinking Shaq and Jameson here).

by musicdaniel on Jul 7, 2010 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it'd be a little bit of both, but mostly LeBron.

The Cavs finished with the best record in the league and LeBron failed to show up for a lot of the playoffs.

Overall, I think it’s similar to how when shaq left LA and nobody thought Kobe could win without him. The perception now with LeBron is that he wants a championship, but he’ll only get it if he goes to play with other all stars. In the end, yes, he’d have a championship, but do you think it’d be as rewarding?

Favors will have a better season than Lee

Well, maybe not. But Favors will be the better player, soon.

by HailOden! on Jul 7, 2010 3:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe in a year or two.

That’s still a pretty great big rotation. Lopez, Favors, Lee

by Nick Van Excellent on Jul 7, 2010 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

True.

Although, I really think Lee is overrated, and will be overpaid. That contract would hurt more in the long-run, and not be much help in the short run.

by HailOden! on Jul 7, 2010 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

He rebounds really well.

I know Lee sucks on defense, but having a big that can rebound AND score is better than someone who just scores. (Amare, West, etc)

I think he could be a starter on a good playoff team and a 6th man on a championship team.

by Nick Van Excellent on Jul 7, 2010 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I am in complete agreement

But does that make him a fit for LeBron and the Nets, should he sign there?

by HailOden! on Jul 7, 2010 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Good for the Bulls.

They needed a PF. Boozer is solid, just about as good as Bosh, just not as young. Keeping room for a max slot is fantastic for them.

Also Utah loses, so good for us too!

Very tough defensive combo. Will not beat them without a top big man.

by Sir.Ludo on Jul 7, 2010 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions

You're joking right?

I can’t really tell, because Noah actually is good at defense, but Boozer doesn’t even try. Or do you mean tough to defend?

Boozer is tough on the boards with a 15 footer

good complement to Joe Kim

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Jul 7, 2010 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Both really..

I dunno, I suppose I wasn’t of the opinion that Boozer was bad at defense. He isn’t all that quick, but he is a big solid body that has to be moved around. They will form a very interesting rebounding tandem which will influence both sides of the court.

Even if Boozer isn’t that great at defense, paired with Noah, their combined masses it will be very hard for the opposing team to establish position in the paint without an incredible center. This isn’t to take away from the fact what this move really upgrades is offense, but I do think it will benefit their D as well.

by Sir.Ludo on Jul 7, 2010 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I can see it

Hopefully for the Bulls, with a vocal, defensive coach like Tim Tibs, Boozer will either step it up on D, or fit into the team-defense.

by HailOden! on Jul 7, 2010 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions

That's a good point

Boozer could be effective, since Thibodeau makes everyone at least adequate on D.

by boppitywop on Jul 7, 2010 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

u know, roy isn't too selfish but i could definitely critique him. Granted part of it is when he was slowed by his knee injury but

he relies a LOT on the whistle. and when it doesnt blow, he gives up on the next def play too much. He also needs the ball in his hands too much. We don’t have a lot of creators but Roy’s off-the-ball game leaves something huge to be desired.

by jksnake99 on Jul 7, 2010 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions

All-Star forwards have left the Western Confrence

Amare was last year, and Boozer was back in 07 and 08, no one else that I can think of, so I guess the competition has gone down. But he would still have to up his game to get in. My guess is that if Oden plays like he did last year, and stays healthy, he would have a better chance at making it than LMA.

Yao will be back this year, so he will be the starter again, and the NBA loves to put Duncan at Forward, so he will still get the start is my guess.

by usmcr3049 on Jul 7, 2010 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions

him or Dirk

lma has a shot though. Gotta play big. I think GO has a better shot at making the team this year.

by RyanRTE on Jul 7, 2010 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

It definitely improves his odds

so would going on a tear to begin the season. In addition to Stoudemire and Boozer, we should also consider that ZBo won’t be very likely to repeat as an All-Star, and there are always injuries…

On the other hand, Lee could join PHX and put up some good numbers. Kevin Love could be traded to a WC team and really perform. Al Jefferson could also be traded to a WC team and have a ZBo-year. Melo could get traded to NYC. There are still a lot of scenarios.

by HailOden! on Jul 7, 2010 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Lee can't join PHX unless they suddenly negotiate a sign and trade, which there has been no mention of

especially considering apparently Amar’e’s contract has been negotiated (and it’s not the sign-n-trade amount).

You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.

by austinpwnz on Jul 7, 2010 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

reports this morning

are that it is a sign and trade, giving PHX a huge trade exception, that they could use on a guy like David Lee. But i don’t see them using it, at least not all of it on Lee, as that would put them back way over the luxury tax I believe, and their owner doesn’t like to spend money.

by usmcr3049 on Jul 8, 2010 8:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Goodbye Jazz?

Millsap is a Hell of a PF, and they still have that Deron Williams guy, along with a coach named Sloan.

I would be surprised if they even lost five more games than last year. They are completely and entirely just as good.

by GMan83201 on Jul 7, 2010 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

We shall see

Utah is one team that MUST stay competitive in order to keep bringing revenue. But if the owners try to shed too much salary/talent and/or Williams publicly demands a trade, they could have some problems.

by HailOden! on Jul 7, 2010 3:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Why on Earth would any of those things happen?

Shed salary? Williams demand a trade? Yeah, they would damage them. Just like Brandon Roy demanding a trade would hurt us. And just as likely.

Horrible Move

For Chicago. Good for us. Boozer is wildy over-rated, but as been problematic for the Blazers for years

by TrailBlazer4Life on Jul 7, 2010 2:41 PM PDT reply actions

I think it is a pretty good move for the Bulls,

they have needed an inside scorer for years, and now they finally have one. Even if James doesn’t become a bull, they have made themselves better with this move.

Yep

You can certainly do worse than a Rose-Boozer tandem working the high-low

by GMan83201 on Jul 7, 2010 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

really?

I shudder when I think about Derrick Rose having someone reliable to pass the ball to. They could be a dangerous combo.

Ryan Gomes: forever a Blazer in our hearts.

by musicdaniel on Jul 7, 2010 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Almost as dangerous as...

Williams and Boozer?

Add a defensive post presence like Noah, with Thibodeau’s system, and they look tough.

by HailOden! on Jul 7, 2010 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Who's their go to scorer late in games?

Deng?

It’s not going to be Rose until he can hit jumpers. Boozer hasn’t ever been that guy. They need a scoring wing.

by Nick Van Excellent on Jul 7, 2010 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Rondo was Boston's late game scorer

and his shot is worse than Rose’s, who is learning to shoot.

You do raise a good point, one that I have no answer to. But I think that team will be more about getting late game stops than it will be about making late baskets. We’ll see if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

by HailOden! on Jul 7, 2010 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Rondo?

C’s take him out half the time in a close game in the 4th due to his FT shooting.

Pierce and Allen were the scorers in late game scenarios.

I had the playoffs in mind

especially game 7. But you are correct. Which matters more though, game 7 of the Finals, or a regular season game?

by HailOden! on Jul 7, 2010 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Pretty sure that the same thing happened in most of the playoffs and game 7.

Sure, Rondo was in there. But, they went with high P&R with Pierce handling the ball on critical possessions and especially end of game 7. Probably a little too much, IMO, as lakers adjusted after couple tries.

by xedubx on Jul 7, 2010 4:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Rondo was definitely not a late game scorer.

He’s afraid of getting fouled and teams just pack the paint when he had the ball. In 08/09 he averaged 2 points per 4th quarter. (Rose averaged 4.7 so maybe he can handle it.)

by Nick Van Excellent on Jul 7, 2010 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Next few couple years.

With the Suns, Spurs, and Jazz falling to the wayside. Billups isn’t getting any younger in Denver. The Blazers have no excuse to be a top contender in the West.

Did Deron Williams age by eight years this offseason? Did Millsap lose a leg? Maybe it’s Utah’s long history of losing…

its in terms of depth where this will hurt.

Also, they should have taken Aldrich instead of Hayward as they could use a defensive minded Center.

I think they were looking more for an AK replacement. But Utah has always hurt themselves in depth to save money, though it doesn’t seem to hurt them too badly that often.

While this may be true, as a Blazer fans I’m less concerned about facing them without Boozer in the lineup. It’s always going to be hard to get a W down in Salt Lick City, but Portland’s task of winning the NW division just got easier
