Understanding the TPE---Andre Miller leads to CP3 via Miami?

With the news this morning about Miller/Rudy and Miami trade talk it made me think about the possibility that Miller could be shipped to Miami for nothing (assuming Lebron doesn't go to Miami) but a traded player exception and then that TPE being sent to NO for CP3.  Is that the way a TPE works and can a TPE be sent out with other pieces to make a deal work?

Seems like it would be even more attractive to NO (assuming money is priority #1) since it'd be an instant 7+ million savings and they have rookie contact Collison to step right in.

So Pryzbilla (and the possibility of insurance paid contract), 7+ million TPE, Batum and Bayless for CP3 + whatever contract NO wants to get rid of.

Keep the CP3 dream alive!  :D

But essentially isn't a TPE the equivalent of cash savings if not used?

If NO didn’t really want Miller but wanted an instant 7 million savings (as opposed to having to pay Miller 7 million for this year as an expiring) wouldn’t that be more attractive? Not positive thats how it works though…hopefully an expert will chime in.

by ilikescotch on Jul 7, 2010 9:39 AM PDT up reply actions

cant do that

TPE cannot be xcombined with other players o exceptions

in theory

you could execute two trades:

1) take player X for the Trade Exception (player salary has to be less or equal to the TPE)
2) take Chris Paul for Joel, Batum, Bayless, etc.

The problem is the contracts that NO wants to get rid of are well more than the TPE that would be generated by trading Miller

Exactly right

If Portland gets a $7.3 million trade exception, they can only bring back a player who makes $7.4 million or less.

If Portland wants to bring back Chris Paul and his $15 million ($17 with the trade kicker), they would have to use other means.

So my question is

why hasn’t Storyteller taken the place of Tom Penn?

Thanks Storyteller for keeping us all straight with the $ sitch.

The answer is one of the following:

1. I’m already an assistant GM for another NBA franchise.

2. I’m best friends with Tom Penn and am mad at the Blazers for firing him.

3. The Blazers haven’t offered me a job because, although I might be able to provide some administrative support to the team in terms of tracking salaries and CBA issues, I’m not qualified to be an assistant GM.

4. I’m posting from the dark side of the moon and the daily commute to Portland would be too far for my tastes.

But, they could split the trades up ......

It wouldn’t work with Okafor, but it would with Posey. Portland sends the TE to the Hornets for Posey, and then trades Pryzbilla, Batum, Bayless and ? for Paul.

The trade comes up a bit short I believe (storyteller – what’s your web site again?). But, if you can make up the difference ……

the Hornets don’t accomplish their ultiimate objective in getting rid of Okafor’s contract, but they get 2 very nice young players, save about $10 million in year one, and close to $20 million in years 2 and 3.

by ATeam on Jul 7, 2010 10:07 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah, I posted this idea above, with Posey being the player X I mentiond

Joel, Bayless, Batum, Babbit would work for CP3
Joel, Bayless, Batum, Williams (if we sign him first) would work for CP3

Mills, Dante, or Pendy instead of Babbit or Williams would NOT work – JUST short. That last salary has to be about 980,000 or more

unsigned draft picks (Williams, Johnson, Claver, Koponen, Freeland) count as $0 for trading.

so, playing hypothetical here and say we traded Williams, we would be left with:

PG: Paul, Chalmers, Mills, Johnson
SG: Roy,
SF: Posey, Babbit
PF: LMA, Dante
C: Oden, Camby, Pendy

Definately screaming for wing players, which oddly enough is what we’ve been targeting in free agency. Conspiracy theorists, unite!

but Joel has one too, which I also forgot

Joel, Bayless, Batum, Dante or Jeff, and Babbit or a signed Williams

At least that's what I understood from a Storyteller posting. But maybe not ...

Storyteller earlier posted that Paul counts $17.2M coming in because of his 15% trade kicker.

However, according to Larry Coon’s Salary Cap FAQ:

For contracts and extensions signed after the current CBA went into effect, the player’s salary added to his trade bonus cannot exceed the maximum salary for that year

For Paul, with 5 years of service, his salary already exceeds the 5 year max (because of raises that is allowed) so does he really get the trade kicker, and does it really count to incoming salary?

Help Storyteller !!!

by BlazerFanSince1970 on Jul 7, 2010 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Ouch

Totally slipped my mind. Yeah, his trade kicker would shoot him above the max allowable so it wouldn’t come into play.

No

Seems to me trading Nic for CP3 leaves a crater. Who mans on Kobe, Durant, Melo? Yes the talent is an upgrade, but we aren’t equipped for that change now. I hate to bring it up but if we still had Webster then it could be taken no question.

You’d need to replace Nic with a proven defender, otherwise we’d be back to rebuilding.

by jiminut on Jul 7, 2010 9:43 AM PDT via mobile reply actions

I think the team sees Dante as that guy

I’m not sure though…But you’re right, it wouldn’t make sense to move Webster if you were going to trade Batum for Paul. And we really do need more than one defensive wing.

But, Posey, though a shell of his former self, was a pretty good perimeter defender for the championship Celtics, iirc.

by HailOden! on Jul 7, 2010 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I think, what we've heard and seen, that Dante would match up with the bigger, stronger guys.

Think Carmelo Anthony. Whereas those who are more of wing players (Kobe) he’s not quick enough for them (I remember last summer the scouts questioned his quickness to guard 3s). Not sure which of those categories Durant fits it.

What would really help on those guys would be improved team defense.

You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.

what could happen is...

a 3 team deal sending out x amount of players to each team using Miami as a salary dump aka miller and having the deal go throughout with cp 3 to Portland and TE and players to NO.

NO gets a big TE along with instant saving and players in, chalmers, bayless batum and + picks. $12 million in savings/ exception
. Portland gets cp n okafor. 26 million coming in
Miami gets Rudy and miller absorbs 7-8 million in cap

by Hoi on Jul 7, 2010 9:48 AM PDT via mobile reply actions

Then

Chicago signs Lebron and trades Deng for Okafor….

I like these fantasies. But, my guess is too many moving parts and commitments needed on a lot of sides. But we’ll know tomorrow: If Lebron says he’s signing with Chicago then Miami and Chicago may be active in filling out their rosters.

by boppitywop on Jul 7, 2010 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't see it as working hard....

IF (and its a big IF) you take the viewpoint that NO’s #1 priority is the team’s finances. Miami gets a starting PG and potential very good SG in Rudy for absolutely nothing save a 1st rounder and rounds out the roster around Wade/Bosh. NO gets instant salary relief along with shedding contract(s) and alot of quality young talent. Portland takes on horrific contract and gets a superstar.

Not much of a stretch IMHO but I realize I’m looking at it through CP3-colored glasses. :D

by ilikescotch on Jul 7, 2010 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions

NO already cleared up cap room

The only reason they trade CPs at this point is if he demans out due to them not building a contender. It won’t be about cap relief.

They dropped to near the tax threshold

But are still on pace to pay tax next year. If they can cut a little more salary, they can get below the threshold. So we probably will see at least one further move from them, although it might not happen until February and it might be very small.
