Chalmers to Portland?

According to Yahoo Sports, Miami is looking to trade Chalmers, Beasley, & a #1 pick to Portland for Miller & Rudy.  I'm not sure what other details would need to be made in order for the trade to work.  Chalmers is an up and coming PG that played well with an All-Star SG in Wade.  He would fit in with Roy and the Blazers team.  I'm not sure how Beasley would fit into the team mold.

Chalmers/Bayless/Mills

Roy/Williams

Batum/Babbit/Cunningham

Aldridge/Camby/Beasley

Oden/Pryzbilla/Pendergraph

Not a big Beasley fan...

…but I will say this…if we are still on the Oden train…

…his unique talents/weaknesses are perfectly matched on this team.

Outside shooter at PF to free up Oden? Check!
Defensive/Rebounding shortcomings made up for by Oden? Check!

Honestly, if it were part of a master plan to plug Beasley into the PF position…and move LMA for a sick trade…

…I’d call it good strategy…although the crux of the matter would be “Who are we getting for LMA?

He’s a huge talent… getting Beasley for junk, & either a stud swingman, or a stud pg…

…that’s not a bad thought

by irish3 on Jul 7, 2010 8:27 AM PDT reply actions

i understand your point though

I just don’t want to see Beasley as a Blazer…I think LMA is still growing despite popular belief

by sammymohawk on Jul 7, 2010 8:32 AM PDT up reply actions

I wouldnt do it

As its currently composed. Miller is too important right now and with his contract situation we will be able to leverage he and pryz at the break. just giving him to miami for beasley and a #1 pick isnt worth it to me. ESPECIALLY if wade has bosh now. There is no way thats a lottery pick.

I say hold, play miller and lets see if we can get a better deal at the deadline with the 15 mil in expirings.

That’s OK if we actually DO a deal with the expiring contracts.

Lately, the pattern has been to NOT trade expiring contracts. I hope these are traded for some kind of asset. Beasley might be better here in Portland with this team than he is in Miami with that team. I’m for this. – Elgin

I dont think Chalmers is good enoug

to compensate the loss of miller and a fantastic expiring contract. People will be looking to save money with the lockout impending and I think its a great idea to have expirings.
Also Beasley might do better here but he is still a 6th man at best right?

Doesn't make sense for Miami.

Roy and Wade are similar guards. They’re dynamic playmakers. Andre Miller is better on-the-ball than working off it.

Chalmers is a very good complement to both Roy or Wade. Defends well and shoots the 3 at a good clip.

Maybe Toronto wants Miller and Rudy?

Could be part of the sign and trade for Bosh. If we are really getting rid of our PG, something else must be in the works.

Hmm let's compare

Chalmers

A guard who shot 32% from three last year in the eastern conference? Who averaged 7.1 ppg and 3.4 asg in 25 minutes? Who averaged only 2 asg in the playoffs? No thanks.

Miller

How about a gaurd who shoots a lousy 20% from 3, but who gets 14.4 ppg, 5.4 asg in 31 minutes of our slow pace? Yeah, I’ll keep that Miller guy.

for pace adjusted stats, just look for ast% and suchlike

ast% for andre: 30.3%
chalmers: 21.0%

Difference between a true PG and an off-ball guard playing next to a ball-dominating SG, kind of. Chalmers is like young Blake, sort of.

Quick Reported:

Rudy for Chalmers and a pick. Says Miller probably not involved.

by TrailBlazer4Life on Jul 7, 2010 8:43 AM PDT reply actions

Thats a pretty good trade

Im not that big on Chalmers, but I see Rudy’s stock has sunk pretty low this season and probably wont rise any higher unless Rudy is given something close to 30 mpg next season.
However we only do this trade if we’re planning on moving Miller..

by jbm01 on Jul 7, 2010 8:58 AM PDT up reply actions

You think so?

I’d think this trade also makes sense if we are planning on moving Bayless. Chalmers is hardly so established in the league as to warrant having to start him.

Dunno

But, I think if its 2nd round or better, its worth it. Rudy doesnt want to be here, and Chalmers could develop into a solid PG. I’m not on the bandwagon that he already is. I’m not that impressed, but I also dont really see Bayless fitting with our team. He wants to be a scorer.

by TrailBlazer4Life on Jul 7, 2010 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd say go with a graduated protections

That would take some negotiating. A few years down the road, when the Heat start having chemistry problems and Wade and Bosh start having injury problems, it could be unprotected, or top 5 protected, and be worth a lot more either for us to reload or trade with some EC’s for a big player.

by HailOden! on Jul 7, 2010 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions

It's going to be the 30th pick or so, with that team

Disclaimer: everything I know about basketball I learned on Blazersedge.

by pualo on Jul 7, 2010 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I doubt it

I’m not buying that Bosh makes them a champion contender. It seems that every few years or so, we have a “dream team.” While it has generated some titles, it hasnt created any super powers, like every thinks it will.

I think the fact that they are completely rebuilding their team, will cause them to suffer. Atleast for a year or two.

by TrailBlazer4Life on Jul 7, 2010 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Plus

Let’s say the Heat sign Wade and Bosh (No LBJ). They’ve still got to put guys around them, and that could take a year. That pick may turn out to be a little higher than anticipated

by King Mar on Jul 7, 2010 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

And there's also the prospect of getting a FUTURE pick

Wade isn’t going to last forever, and Bosh has some serious knee concerns. A few years down the road, that team could lose one or both to injury, with the other hobbled and aging. As the Spurs saw when they lost the Admiral for a season, all it takes is one season…

Also, we still have Born, Buchanan, Filipi, and that other scout (his last name starts with a C or a K, but I can’t think of it right now), so even if the pick is low, I’m confident we’ll be able to pick up steals in the late first.

He could get PT...

…If Riley’s plan turns out…they are still hoping on LBJ…and they’ll understandably have a bare bones roster…that is grossly in need of 3pt shooters to free up Bosh, Wade, & LBJ…

…if Rudy is brought over…and LBJ comes…I can guarentee you you would see a lot of this lineup:

1.) Wade
2.) Rudy
3.) LBJ
4.) Bosh
5.) ???

Wade can handle the rock…Rudy would be a perfect sandwich between Wade & LBJ…

…not saying that it’s ideal to have Wade at PG, but their have to be some compromises when you gut your roster for 3 superstars…

…and you could do a lot worse than having Rudy play with those two guys…that’d be a pretty sick 1-4 lineup….Rudy’s just about the perfect compliment…

by irish3 on Jul 7, 2010 9:34 AM PDT up reply actions

I think Rudy would be better at PG

He’d still be playing off the ball, of course, but can handle it well enough, and Wade would typically defend either the bigger or better player, depending on the match up. Sort of a tall Mo Williams, with hops.

Hardly up and coming.

Up and coming? Chalmers was the #4 pick in 2008 who averaged 3.4 assists and 7.1 ppg in 25 minutes per game for the 73 games he played in 2010. Beasley was the #2 pick who has shown more of a propensity to play off the court – than on.

About all this tells me is why Miami is going to veterans (they certainly haven’t hit any home runs in the draft for awhile), and why Pfund is not my favorite GM choice.

You should be doing better with a #4 and a #2 than they are. Bayless, at #12, looks better right now than Chalmers. Who, by the way – has a lot more minutes on the court in his first two years than Bayless. And as far as having to play with Wade –
Bayless has to live with Roy.

if we do this,i like it. chalmers is only entering into the 3rd season as a true PG in the NBA. hes young. and YES. up and coming. who did he have to play with? WADE. thats it. and beasley, rarely. they have no shooters on that team, whatsoever besides WADE. now, he will come here with B roy. Batum. LMA. a Slashing bayless. and most of all. Oden. who the heat have nobody as tall as oden even. so there u go, that steps up his assists. as for the Points. i think that comes with a better team. and confidence. and 3rd of all. have you seen some of the steals this guy has made? they are incredible. check out the one on deron williams on youtube..

Going to veterans > hitting homeruns in the draft when your core is in their mid-late 20s (by the end of this month, Brandon will be 26, and LMA will be 25)

Mike and Chad are still around to scout the kids, Pfund would help balance the front office, so they wouldn’t be so June draft day-centric

You're right. I forgot and misread his chart - sorry.

Still, I don’t see any advantage to swapping out Chalmers for Bayless or Miller, and Beasley for Batum. Granted – Beasley may eventually grow up and realize his hoped for talent – but we’re saying the same thing about Batum – who seems to be a better defender and character guy. Miami seems a little too willing to deal them – given their roster. Which should say something. Chalmers lost time in his second season – rather than gained it.

by Eben Calder on Jul 7, 2010 10:00 AM PDT reply actions

I'd do it in a heart beat.

I don’t want Beasley or Chalmers on the Blazer roster, but Beasley could be a pretty nice asset in the next trade.

This team isn’t going to start getting better until they get a PG. Miller’s gotta go.

I don’t think Miller has a lot of trade value right now. Maybe at the trade deadline with a possible expiring contract, but I just don’t see anyone wanting to start the season off with Miller on their roster. If Miami wants him – go for it.

However, Beasley has a reasonable contract at $5 million and is an asset that someone might be interested in now. Team hiim up with Bayless, and I’d think you out to be able to get a pretty nice point guard in the $7 – $9 million range (Harris? Hinrich?). Or throw in Pryzbilla and work on at a Paul, Nash, Parker.

The trade by itself doesn’t look that inviting to the Blazers, but I think it sets them up better for the next trade.

by ATeam on Jul 7, 2010 10:21 AM PDT reply actions

Yes, I watched every game ....

And I saw Andre put up nice stats and be a big part of salvaging a season lost due to injuries. But as his play was good, I saw others’ stats decline.

Roy’s shooting percentage went down last year. His 3 pt % went down last year.

Rudy’s shooting percentage went down last year. His 3 pt % went down last year. (each by more than 4 percentage points)

Martel’s shooting percentage went down last year. his 3 pt % went down last year (compared to 2 years ago as he didn’t play last year).

Where Andre’s performance individually looks good, I don’t think he makes other players better – especially the 2 and 3. In fact, I contend because he does not command a defender on the perimeter, he allows defenses to rotate over to Roy, and to our shooters – thus the declining stats.

Yes, I enjoyed watching Andre do his thing, but I would rather watch Roy do his thing, and have him surrounded by shooters to open up the floor. More room for Roy to penetrate, more wide open shots for shooters when their defenders rotate to Roy. As opposed to Andre’s man camped in the key waiting for Roy, and everyone else stays on their man.

by ATeam on Jul 7, 2010 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

None of that is Dre's fault

Roy was hobbled by injuries, playing with a sprained hamstring even after he missed games, and was poorly conditioned in the first month. In December and early January, he shot 10 points above his career average from the 3 pt. During November, and after his “return from injury” (i.e. after he decided to play through them), he shot worse than Bayless did from the three for the season.

Rudy had problems that were unrelated to Miller. In effect, he gave up on the season because he had no interest in being here, and requested a trade. That’s not Dre’s fault.

Martell had his best stretch of the season playing with Miller. The month he lead the NBA in 3pts made was also the full month he started alongside Miller. He started to slump when he stopped getting minutes and shots. His replacement at the 3, Nic Batum, had what was unarguably an incredible half-season, so your conclusion that Dre hurts the 2 and the 3 is false. Nic Batum is to blame for Martell’s struggles, and I think we can all agree that, if that is the case, it was justified.

I tend to agree.

Miller’s lack of shooting prowess did have a major effect on the rest of Portland’s offense last year, particularly the perimeter guys. It would be interesting to see how/if Miller affected other teams he was on in a similar fashion. For example, the first two years of Carmelo Anthony in Denver were with Dre; in the second year, Melo averaged 20.8 PPG and shot 43.1%. The next year, Dre was gone, and Melo averaged 26.5 and shot 48%. Granted, this can also be chalked up to Melo’s development as a player, but still, interesting “coincidence.”

I would love this trade.....Chalmers is a nice young PG who plays defense and can shoot but Beasley has better upside than LaMarcus.

If Nate can convince Beasley to come off the bench and like it, he fits better with Oden than LA does. This would be an outstanding trade for the Portland Trailblazers. Miller would fit good in Miami because with superstars like Wade and Bosh Miami would be able to hide Millers flaws as far as shooting and playing defense plus Miami would be a more up tempo ball club unlike Portland.

This would be a win-win for both clubs and I hope it gets done. Depends on the King whether or not this gets done.

Can't believe the team is talking about Beasely

I wasn’t a Beasely fan when he was coming out of college – could see character issues back then, he hasn’t done anything since to lead me to believe that he’s at a place to benefit a team, that his attitude/character would be detrimental to a team’s chemistry.

I would not like to see Beasely come to the Blazers as he is, maybe in time he changes, but I don’t want to see the Blazers bringing him in to see if they can change him – kind of like someone marrying someone with character flaws they are uncomfortable with, thinking they will be able to change them once they are married – it’s not a good strategy.
