Idle Junk Drawer - Fifth, Seventh, Two-thousand-Tenth

This is my 42nd post.

Star-divide

I'm going to propose nothing, ask nothing, and contemplate nothing. I will just suggest to you all that you pay more attention to the life around you because if you aren't constantly in awe of the mystery of being and the blessings in your life -- yore doing it wrong.

I dedicate this 42nd post to the one who camethe one who is about to come, and to me. Because without me my life would be way more boring than it is.

and. finally, for three months later..

"Do not shed tears when I have gone

but smile instead because I have lived.

Do not shut your eyes and pray to God that I’ll come back

but open your eyes and see all that I have left behind.

I know your heart will be empty because you cannot see me

but still I want you to be full of the love we shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live only for yesterday

or you can be happy for tomorrow because of what happened

between us yesterday.

You can remember me and grieve that I have gone

or you can cherish my memory and let it live on.

You can cry and lose yourself become distraught

and turn your back on the world

or you can do what I want - smile, wipe away the tears,

learn to love again and go on.

I can't go on. I must go on. I'll go on*"

Anyone have good nonpoison ways to kill lots of ants?

I got so many ants, and they are everywhere.

No. The only way I've ever used was poison traps. They work really well though.

Maybe I will need to go that route.

Just wanted to avoid poison with the dogs around but maybe these traps can be set somewhere they can’t get to.

Yeah that's a big concern for me too, as I also have a dog.

As long as the traps are where the dog(s) can’t get to them you should be fine.

borax solution

are these the odoriferous little black ants that small like ammonia when you squish ‘em? No matter. you can mix a solution of sugar water and boric acid onto cotton balls. place them near the highest concentration of ants. The ants will feast on the juice and carry it back to the nest. The queen of the colony must die before the colony will die. Boric acid acts to dry out the ants and clog their ability to “breath”. Since ants don’t have lungs, they respirate through their body and abdomens. I think this is the process. If you don’t have the ingredients your local Wilco or ACE or everything store should carry the product. Pet safe. I prefer the homemade solution because the Terro brand “juice” turns sticky hard too quickly (couple days tho at least)

you might also consider some outside bait

since these little critters are typical nested outdoors… mine find their way to any splotch of jam or food that drops on the counter or floor. They make pet safe formulas that you can spread around the perimeter of your place. I really recommend this. The terro can dwindle down the ant population to very low numbers, but if they don’t kill the queen, they will come back. I like watching how the scouts and workers get smaller and smaller as the bait is consumed. Presumably the youngest hatchlings are getting sent out as the older workers die. Muhahaha

That stuff works, use it in conjunction with a bleach water solution that you put down wherever they've walked

You need to cut off their chemical trail. Then use the borax where they are coming into the house, you may have to move furniture to find the actual source but it’s very important. Also do not leave any dishes in the sink, don’t leave any water in the sink or on the counter, and absolutely don’t leave even a single grain of sugar to be found anywhere in the house. In my experience you have to chase them around a little bit. Once you close off an entrance with their killing, they’ll likely find another way in so be persistent! Be vigilant!

I get tired of mopping tho

they send out so many scouts and cover ground so fast if there is food or water they’ll find it. Plus I hate the smell of bleached floors, although pine-sol et al also work to nuetralize their chemical trail. Pretty sophisticated little varmints.

I had an internet outage all last night. Got a bit more work done that way, but not much. The fireworks and concert was fun.

And now I can say I once stayed in the same hotel as Toby Keith (and probably Craig Ferguson). Who (Keith) looks much older than on his promotional pictures ;-) But he’s a pretty good entertainer for such a venue.

They had a pretty great video montage about the 3 Kennedy brothers, with actors and local news people reading excerpts from their speeches. That was classy and patriotic and had a local touch at the same time.

Best part of the fireworks was the music from How to Train Your Dragon, that was strangely fitting to the colorful flashes. And the grand finale where they just lit up everything they had for 20 seconds. All in all it wasn’t all that long, about 15 minutes.

his stats aren't much on offense

so I guess you’d be getting him for defense. I disliked his defense against Carmelo in the playoffs, and I dislike the way Jazz players play defense in general (all they do is foul). If he were a lockdown defender night in and night out, I’d set aside my stylistic qualms, but I’m not sure that’s the case.

He shoots well enough ( .382 from 3, .829 FT, .483 FG ) and the scouting report says he can finish and goes strong to the rim.

(1) His usage is awful low for someone who can go strong and finish at the rim. I haven’t seen enough to make a legit call.

(2) If he can’t go to the rim with real regularity, what is he really giving us that Martell wasn’t?

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 8:48 AM PDT up reply actions

He seems Party-esque, statistically.

But less of a rebounder.

And I’m always wary of guys who do well in the Sloan system; you can get away with less than skilled ballhandling.

Yup. My concern also. Did you mean Marty-esque?

"What people need to know is that those pictures were taken a year and a half ago, and I've grown since then." - Greg Oden

by dario argento on Jul 5, 2010 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, and more open shots around the rim

I suppose his higher FG% than Rudy’s has more to do with the system than any big difference in ability.

by Norsktroll on Jul 5, 2010 8:52 AM PDT up reply actions

if he is like Marty

that’s kind of disappointing, because I liked Marty personally but not his game so it would suck to get rid of him then get a non-Marty version of Marty, if ya know what I mean.

Also seems like we’d be going in the opposite direction—turning Martell into two players (Babbitt/Matthews, assuming that the MLE is freed up by the money saved from dumping Martell) creates more problems than it solves.

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 8:54 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't get what Matthews really does for us.

Do we win many more games with him off the bench than we do with Rudy? I can’t imagine we would. Rudy’s a better rebounder, passer, and may be a better shooter. He also costs 4-5 million less next season.

by Cablinasian on Jul 5, 2010 8:56 AM PDT up reply actions

defense, I suppose?

but go look at some of the guys who have ridiculously been considered lockdown wing defenders over the past five years. Ruben Patterson, Mickael Pietrus, Martell Webster, Trenton Hassell. I’m not paying 5 mill for a guy whose primary resume line is having once held Kobe or Carmelo to 4-16. Especially when you see Thibs turning Paul Pierce and Ray Allen into parts of a formidable defensive team.

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 9:02 AM PDT up reply actions

He's assuredly a better defender than Rudy.

But I have trouble assuming that he’s a better player overall, and he certainly isn’t worth 4-5 million more.

I agree. Keyon Dooling is a nice defensive option at a similar position, and he’d be available for considerably less.

by Cablinasian on Jul 5, 2010 9:04 AM PDT up reply actions

I was looking at Dooling's stats

his rebounding numbers read like a typo! You’d think you could get an RR of more than 3% just by accident!

Not that I really care—with Oden/Camby on the floor all the time, guard rebounding is not a huge concern. Just though it was funny.

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 9:07 AM PDT up reply actions

I haven't watched enough of him either, but from what I've read I think he cuts strong to the rim to catch and finish.

This would be congruent to Utah’s ( awesome ) offensive system where back screens and cuts get guys open consistently. I haven’t read that he can take his defender off the dribble.

Not to mention Williams seems to own Paul whenever the Jazz and Hornets play.

by MiledAnimal on Jul 5, 2010 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Meaningless one on one matchups aside

CP3 is a LOT lot better. Deron is good, CP3 is great.

But more than that (because I am sure a lot of fans feel Deron is better), it’s because there are no rumours that the Jazz can’t afford Deron or would be forced to move him because of his contract or for new owners or whatever. That’s been the hope of many a fan for years now, and maybe it’s coming to fruition with Shinn trying to sell the team to a guy who can’t buy it yet.

As unlikely it is that the Hornettes move CP3, it is even less likely the Jazz move Deron. And especially not to Portland.

Plus, c’mon Miled… do you want your kids rooting and cheering for a “man” who combs his hair forward into a false hairline?!?!

Chris has average 15.5/8.5 on 41% shooting in games against Deron Williams (14 games total).

a LOT better. There is literally nothing Williams is better at, save for back to the basket play. A healthy Paul is a better ball handler, passer, shooter, passing lanes defender, on ball perimeter defender and rebounder. Based on Paul’s last fully healthy year, the difference could be compared to the difference between say, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony at the 3.

I'll like him on the Blazers if no Spanish newspapers interview him.

I think Rudy is getting more flack than he deserves for his comments about wanting a bigger role on the Blazers. If we keep him, I hope he blows-up next season.

I think he's more likely to be as good as he was as a rookie, then his poor 2nd season

I hope he gets his musskulls strong and his body in shape so he stops looking like a LA twink heroin addict.

Oh, and learning how to dribble would be a plus as well!

I doubt Matthews defense is so good that he’s better than Good-Rudy, but if Rudy is gone, Matthews ain’t bad of course. He’s solid.

LIttle message for my Salem area tweekers

OK TWEEKERS—- I hope you had your fun last night, all night for many of you. Celebrating America’s independence is a great thing, and I was even semi tolerant of the fact that all too many of you couldn’t wait for the 4th and just had to light some off on the the first, and 2nd and the 3rd of July as well. Now I now how easily amused you are and how meth acts on the brain, so I was a little tolerant of being woke up at midnight with your childless antics last week. But it’s over. Please wait another year to entertain yourselves with the brain ejaculation the fireworks/chrystal meth cocktail provides you. Better yet… quit tweeking altogether you freaking jerks.

Someone tell me why I shouldn't like Daniel Gibson

He’s making 4 mill a year for 3 or 4 years. Plays off the ball, and can shoot ridiculously good. He’s like an athletic Blake. I can’t help but think he’d be a good fit with Roy. Not sure how he is on D.

So I need to hear reasons why we shouldn’t get him… (jksnake and AK i’m looking your direction)

get Daniel Gibson and his .424 career 3 point %

by In Walks Rudy on Jul 5, 2010 8:49 AM PDT reply actions

yeah defense is my main concern

the low assist numbers i’m sure are do to playing with Lebron and mostly play off the ball so I can justify those in my mind.

Yeah, Daniel Gibson is basically a smaller, yet more athletic Steve Blake.

Oh, and on an earlier note, most of the wings who recently played for the Utah Jazz — such as Ronnie Brewer, C.J. Miles, and Wes Matthews — would be poor fits for the Portland Trail Blazers due to below average handles, subpar long-range shooting, and only so-so on-ball defense.

get the new one for sure

otherwise you gotta buy a wireless adapter. Totally worth it. And they look a little cooler, not that that matters much.

by spambot on Jul 5, 2010 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions

The old ones will be cheaper, of course

Especially if you buy a used one.

There are basically three models: The original, the refresh (which has HDMI on the back) and the new model.

Each model is increasingly efficient, meaning with every generation there is less fan noise, and less power usage. Only the brand new model has wifi built in if that matters to you (it has ethernet on board).

If you can, wait until the new model has been out for a short time, so you can compare prices. Perhaps a used one will be a good price, especially if you don’t need wifi.

by Timmay! on Jul 5, 2010 11:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Good info.

I’m leaning toward the new one, mainly because noise is a big pet peeve of mine. I HATE how loud the old 360s are.

by Cablinasian on Jul 5, 2010 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I have both the old 360 and the 360 slim

a lot depends on what you want it for. if you need wireless internet get the slim because you otherwise it will cost you another 100 for the adapter. if you plan on downloading music and movies you will want the slim (250 gb) if you plan on having two 360s and want to use the same gamertag on both, DO NOT get the slim it doesnt have a memory card slot and you have to recover your gamertag online which sucks. If you plan on getting kinect then you also want the slim because you will have to buy an adapter for the old 360. if you just want to play halo 3 online get an old one, most stores are trying to cut old inventory and offering things like a free game, or a in store gift card

If you knew a player was going to turn into Mike Miller, is that good value at the 9th pick in the draft? Honest question.

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 10:50 AM PDT up reply actions

interesting question

would depend on the draft. In a typical draft, probably decent value at best. Of course, I really doubt Hayward will be as good as Miller, and I’m one of the people who actually liked Hayward as a pick in the 20s.

by jksnake99 on Jul 5, 2010 10:54 AM PDT up reply actions

The reason I ask is it seems like Miller is sort of Hayward’s best case. That’s awfully low upside for a top 10 pick, so you better be pretty certain he’s going to turn out that well.

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions

I think that’s a very good point. That’s a good explanation for why it was a poor pick— if you are going to draft a guy at #9 who’s upside is still not an allstar, he should be a much surer thing to reach that upside than Hayward is.

by jksnake99 on Jul 5, 2010 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions

Gordon Hayward isn't Mike Miller, though.

Miller’s a much, much more efficient shooter, as well as a ton more athletic than Hayward.

by AK1984 on Jul 5, 2010 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I think shooting can be learned

But Mike Miller’s size and superior athleticism, and passing game, to go along with the shooting, make him clearly superior.

Not in the press release: He needs to add some bulk, but he could be a serviceable backup center in the NBA.
In the Euroleague he averaged 6.2 and 5.4 and a block in 22 minutes. He’s at least 7’0" and 23. Most scouts say his footwork needs to improve, but he’s usually pretty active around the rim and has good hands.

Turrible

Two Italians and a German are sitting in a bar in a red light district, talking about soccer and how many times Italy became soccer world champion. In the end, both Italians get shot in the head when they can’t agree and probably boasted that Italy was better than Germany in soccer, one is dead and the other one is in critical condition. The shooter was a well known patron in the bar, so it won’t be very difficult to find him. The Italians worked next door in a pizzeria.

Unfortunately it’s a true story that happened this morning. Italy won 4 times, 1934, 1938, 1982, 2006, which would have been easy to google. But does it really matter if it was 3 or 5 instead? Some people are aggressive and dumb when drunk which is a sad combination.

Not too many first-round draft picks don’t have their team option picked up for at least the third season, but Orton is a great candidate for that dishonorable distinction.

their elite team status seems pretty dependent on KG, and if he plays big minutes during the regular season to keep them in the top 4, he’d probably be gassed for the playoffs (2k minutes seemed to do him in this year). So it’s a catch-22.

Bosh + Wade would definitely be a strong force in the east to go far in the playoffs, but it’s not automatically better than what other teams can throw at them. It’s not Wade + Shaq still in prime + ref support.

ahh

I still think that team is significantly worse than Orlando. We shall see.

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Dwight Howard covers a lot of team flaws

But Vince Carter is aging, Rashard Lewis is Rashard Lewis, and I’m not sure they have a plan in place to fill the roles needed around Howard and, presumably, Nelson.

by Timmay! on Jul 5, 2010 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Orlando has big flaws

but it’s also the team with probably the second best player in the league, and led the league in point differential last year. Absent a significant drop-off from Rashard and VC next year (and it’s not like they were amazing last year), they are still quite a bit better than Wade (aging) + Bosh (doesn’t play defense) + a bunch of scrap heap players.

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Miami will still have 10 or 11m to spend after signing Bosh and re-signing Wade, right?

They could still make an offer to a couple free agents. Josh Childress, Mike Miller, Brendan Haywood, even a Brad Miller.

After that, they’d have to fill out the roster with whatever they can get.

by Timmay! on Jul 5, 2010 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah

it’ll depend on what Miami can do, and where Orlando ends up.

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

they probably won't

I was more talking about the possibility of further production drop-offs by VC and Rashard.

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions

In the meantime, Brendan Haywood, Brad Miller, and Mike Miller would all ...

be nice fits alongside a core of Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. Keyon Dooling would make for a nice backup behind Mario Chalmers, too.

by AK1984 on Jul 5, 2010 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions

That is the optimum scenario.

Wade and Bosh is good, but the team around them will be awful and not ultimately as scary as it could be. Chicago adding Boozer doesn’t make them a contender, Amare rots in New York with lots of cash, and LeBron stays in Cleveland and avoids setting fire to the city.

It’s the offseason. While most of us will spend that time missing basketball and over-analyzing it, perhaps you could take a few months to completely redesign NBA TV. You know, new music, new graphics, maybe change out a few of the hosts, work on a few new shows, and, like NHL TV already does, how about you spend more time playing classic games?

It lets NO save face with a young PG who replaces Chris Paul. And it tells LBJ, we’re willing to make the big trades to win you a title.

Posey also has two years left, and Deng is much better at this point in their careers

I mainly put in Deng because Chicago doesn’t need him anymore, and Stojakovich expires anyway so moving him isn’t attractive to NO.

by Norsktroll on Jul 5, 2010 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah. I withheld Deng due to the contract.

Even with it, NO has to at least stop and think about it.

I don’t think LBJ would be excited to lose Noah, whom he probably would see as a replacement for Anderson V.

Either way, NO and Chicago would seem to have a lot to discuss, if Chi thinks they’re about to be stuck with Boozer and none of the Big 3.

Taking back that much money in contracts would screw up Chicago's cap space, though.

There are some good players out there. They won’t have a well-rounded roster, but they can be better than last year, with Curry still an expiring contract.

If the New York Knicks want to make the playoffs this season, then dealing Eddy Curry for ...

somebody of on-court value will be a move in the right direction. Even then, though, the Knicks aren’t a championship contender without LeBron James in the fold. James, of course, is highly, highly unlikely to sign with the Knicks at this point.

by AK1984 on Jul 5, 2010 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

The picks aren't unprotected.

The 2011 first-round draft pick is just an opportunity to swap selections and, moreover, is top-one protected. If the Knicks do get the first pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, New York’s obligations to Houston are extinguished.

The future conditional draft pick(s) is a top-five protected first-round draft pick from 2012 through 2015, while becoming a 2015 second-round draft pick and a 2016 second-round draft pick if not conveyed by then.

Maybe they should remember how they got KP. Or how the Thundersonics got Presti.

Or how the Rockets got Morey. Not by looking at “okay, who recently got fired from a pretty crappy situation” or “who once was good and is now out of a GM job”? And yeah, you have a very tiny chance to hire someone out of a good situation, even if they would offer someone like Presti way more money than he currently makes.

by Norsktroll on Jul 5, 2010 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Roger Mason, Jr. had a down year last season, but he's honestly one of the few players who ...

could play alongside Jerryd Bayless and help hide that gunner’s numerous flaws. Well, perimeter defense would still be an issue with the second unit; however, Mason, Jr. would still be an upgrade over Rudy Fernandez in that regard. And, if Mason, Jr. can return to 2007-2008/2008-2009 form, then Fernandez could be dealt elsewhere for future assets — such as to the Chicago Bulls for a future first-round draft pick (via the Charlotte Bobcats) — and a mediocre rookie like Elliot Williams won’t be relied upon for playing time on a team that’s supposedly looking to make strides next season.

by AK1984 on Jul 5, 2010 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Which flaws does Mason hide?

Bayless’s flaws:

(1) Can’t shoot from the outside
(2) Not a natural distributor
(3) Crappy defense (at least for now)

Mason’s a decent outside shooter, but that’s the easiest flaw to cover. He gets very few assists, turns the ball over quite a bit given is USG and AST, and doesn’t play very good defense. I liked your idea of Keyon Dooling better.

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually, Roger Mason, Jr. is a very methodical playmaker and a pretty good facilitator ...

on offense. Over his career, Mason, Jr. has roughly a 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio — which is 1.9:1 to be exact — on the other hand, though, Bayless has a 1.67:1 assist-to-turnover ratio for his career. Besides, if Nate McMillan is destined to be head coach for at least one more season, then Mason, Jr. makes sense on a two-year, BAE-level contract, with a team option for the second season.

by AK1984 on Jul 5, 2010 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I understand he wouldn't kill us

my issue is with us figuring out how to use our BAE on players who are unlikely to play very much before we try to address the very real problems with our roster going forward.

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, I'm still a huge fan of a giant consolidation trade. I don't see that occurring, ...

however, since the guys who are currently in Portland’s front office seem rather timid when it comes to making the big move. So, with regards to the roster’s current state, trading Rudy Fernandez for a future first-round draft pick — as I detailed in one of my above posts — and replacing him with Roger Mason, Jr. is a fine stopgap move. It’s certainly not going to put this team over the top, though.

by AK1984 on Jul 5, 2010 4:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Can’t argue with that, though I’d want a top-10 pick for Rudy and I don’t know if we can get that kind of value.

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Here's the protection on the future first-round pick Charlotte owes Chicago.

2012: Top-14
2013: Top-12
2014: Top-10
2015: Top-8
2016: Unprotected

For Rudy Fernandez, that’s more than fair value. The Chicago Bulls could use Fernandez, too, as he’s cheap and has got the long-distance shooting stroke that’s needed there.

by AK1984 on Jul 5, 2010 5:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Mason wouldn't be too bad as a backup wing on the cheap

I wouldn't exactly call Roger Mason, Jr. a "wing," but rather an oversized combo guard.

As it pertains to cheap wings, Keith Bogans would be an all right target. That’s funny, too, as both played for the San Antonio Spurs last season. Yet, even though Bogans would’ve been a nice, cheap replacement for Martell Webster, the team seems intent on giving Luke Babbitt a run at the 3. Mason, Jr., however, could still have a spot on this squad at the BAE, although that’s only if Rudy Fernandez is moved elsewhere for a future asset (i.e., draft pick).

by AK1984 on Jul 5, 2010 5:43 PM PDT up reply actions

We may as well try Babbitt out. It’s not like guys similar to Bogans aren’t going to be available if he flames out.

So now that the Knicks have not lost out completely on FAs, who will they try to attract to team up with Amare?

Who has stated in the past that he didn’t like D’Antoni using him at center, and that D’Antoni wasn’t an accessible players coach.

Parker? Felton? Someone like Mike Miller? Still hoping to land LeBron or Wade?

Did the Knicks take Amar’e because they knew something concrete about where Bosh was going? That would mean only LeBron is really still on the market as far as the top tier guys (then there’s David Lee I suppose).

Right, David Lee needs to be moved at this point.

The New York Knicks and the Minnesota T’wolves make for poor trading partners, though, since swapping Lee forAl Jefferson doesn’t do anything to fill the needs and holes of either team.

by AK1984 on Jul 5, 2010 4:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I would want more for Parker

And with McDyess and Splitter and Blair and a few other bigs I see no need for Lee in San Antonio.

by Norsktroll on Jul 5, 2010 4:48 PM PDT up reply actions

A lot of it depends on Tiago Splitter, since him coming over would make David Lee unecessary.

Yet, if Splitter stays overseas in Spain, though, then Lee would be a solid fit alongside Tim Duncan in the starting lineup, while Antonio McDyess and DeJuan Blair come off the bench.

by AK1984 on Jul 5, 2010 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not sure about that.

Tiago Splitter will be an interesting test case, though. So, if the San Antonio Spurs do offer up Splitter the full MLE, I think he takes it.

Gutierrez is the best defender I have seen in my view.

I just think his offensive numbers (.350 OBP, .771 OPS) will turn off voters to voting for him instead of someone like McCutchen (Where the hell is he on the All star voting?)

wOBA is an advanced stat used to calculate offensive value.

It’s an improved OPS, but scaled to match OBP. Guti’s .346 wOBA is safely a bit ahead of the league average hitter, so you’d hope the managers would see that his overall value isn’t hindered by his hitting too much. Oh well. Can’t expect that when you see the teams they do select.

I actually reference wOBA in another post in another subthread.

And I actually believe in it. I am simply just going by what the average baseball fan sees, which is not wOBA. They only look at the traditional stats like OBP, SLUG, RBI’s, etc. While wOBA is a great all-around stat to use in my view, it wouldn’t matter in an all-star selection to most people.

You can talk about deserve or not deserve, and based on number of innings pitched I agree he didn’t really merit it, but Strasburg is absolutely one of the top 10 pitchers in the NL. Zero question about it. He may be top 5.

I don't know about top 10.

Don’t know if you have noticed, but the NL is absolutely loaded with pitching. Halladay, Wainwright, Jimenez, Josh Johnson, and Lincecum just off the top of my head for top 5 (Not in any order, just names), and there is also Hudson, Gallardo, Carpenter, Garcia, Cain, etc.

I don’t know if I would take Strasburg, no matter how good his stuff is, over those guys just yet, maybe in a year I would, but not now.

by Timmay! on Jul 5, 2010 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions

yep, tough to judge at this point. I’m going on a combination of minor league stats (stuff like K/9, K/BB, WHIP), major league stats, what I’ve read from people who know a lot (e.g Keith Law) and my own observations.

Strasburg has the best FIP of any NL starter at the moment. Its very easy to argue he’s in the top 3. You could also make a case for him quite a bit lower.

For me, he’s in the top 5. Ahead of Wainwright for sure. Maybe ahead of Lincecum and Jimenez also.
I honestly think he’d be my 3rd choice to start a game I had to win of any NL pitcher, after Halladay and Johnson.

Small sample size though— very true. Hard to know for sure.

by jksnake99 on Jul 5, 2010 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

You must not like Wainwright very much.

He’s the 2nd best pitcher in the NL behind Johnson in my book anyway with Halladay a close 3rd.

That said, I want to see him face a club like Cincinnati before I proclaim him the next big thing, because, I mean, anyone can look like an all-star against the Pirates…His competition has been underwhelming to say the least.

Well, I may be a bit biased as a Cardinal fan

but he has what I consider one of the best pitches in baseball. If you combined Wainwright’s curve, Lincecum’s changeup, Halladay or Rivera’s cutter, and perhaps Johnson’s fastball, you would have an invincible pitcher.

Man, this ram we had

He’d attack my sisters and mom and try to kill them, so I would have to be a He-Man and grab the ram by its horns and flip it on its back and pin it, to show it who was boss.

You had to alpha it and be super rough with it, because it was MEAN.

My dad did the same, though he has a lot more experience with that sort of thing since he grew up as a farmer and I am a soft city kid.

It was a really heavy ram, but it was funny how it would go limp once you finally pinned it down. It’d say “ok, you win, I sorry” as it was on its back.

ANOTHER reason I hate chickens are that roosters are roostersuckers. They are MEAN.

They also would keep trying to kill my sisters and mom. We got rid of all of the roosters because we got tired of kicking them. They are awful creatures and deserve to die many times over.

Oh, we’d list “free roosters” on Craigslist and every single time the people who’d call and ask about them were straight-from-Asia type Asians. We gave away roosters about 10 separate times and EACH TIME (no joke) within a half hour of it being posted on Craigslist, Asian immigrants would call for the free chickens.

Roosters are mean. I have a story...beware...it is kinda long

So when I was growing up in GP ….I was basically a townie. But when I was about 13 or 14 my best friend lived on a little ranch outside of town and the neighbor’s rooster ran around loose and kept attacking my friend, his brother, his mom and dogs. So finally the word came down from the mom that we had permission to use extreme prejudice against the rooster the next time it came on the property. My buddy had a .22 rifle and the stakeout was on!!
So anyway, the next time this rooster showed up we started blasting away at it …we musta hit it two or three times but the thing would NOT die. It kept coming back …day after day. We kept shooting and it kept squawking and feathers kept flying everywhere. And everyday …here it would come again. It was like our very own Moby Dick to two 14 years Captain Ahabs.

Finally we decided that we had to take a different approach. We had watched Gilligan’s Island enough to know that next best way to deal with this thing was to dig a giant pit for a trap. It was about 4 feet deep and maybe 3-4 feet across. We laid branches and stuff across the hole and stood back and admired our work. The only problem was ….getting the rooster to walk across and fall into our trap……the obvious answer, of course, was bait. Now…what do chickens eat? Now that I am older and wiser, I realize that many things would have worked….chicken feed….corn…hell, even corn flakes. But at that time we were not wise in the ways of farm animals, so we went with ….baloney on a stick!
Needless to say, we didn’t succeed in capturing the rooster……however when we checked the next morning we realized why the dog (a sheltie) hadn’t come when we called the evening before.

Anyway….we never did finish off the infamous Zombie Rooster of Grants Pass…..but his story is still told around those parts …when the night is dark, and people are drunk.

My grandma had a really cool way of dealing with chickens

I remember seeing my Grandma Magnum killing birds too

She’d just grab them by the neck and spin them. It seemed like the easiest and most humane way.

One time we were in her kitchen and while we were drawing at the table, she opened the kitchen window and grabbed a rifle-type-gun from behind the fridge and shot a pheasant in the front yard. It was so delicious!

Apparently it's common knowledge in the NBA writing guild that Amare's contract can't be insured

So he is one of the 11 players on the list. Joining Deng and Curry and Yao. And probably soon will be joined by Oden. I would probably put on Joe Johnson just because.

We can see that his summer’s haven’t helped a lot so far, so maybe a different type of training would help him.

The frustrating thing with him is that his faults seem so easy to fix. It should only take a summer for him to learn to dribble better or shoot from a foot farther out. Maybe a summer of the international game is what he needs.

the one year turner shot 44% from 3, he only took .8 3PA a game. brandon never took more than 1 three per game in a year until his senior year (2.9, which is a full three more than turner ever averaged in a year), which was the only year he averaged over 40% from 3.

He might not be a 21/7/7 like Grant Hill was

But Hill also averaged almost 4 turnovers a game and I think Turner seems capable of being a similar all-round stat stuffer.

Grant Hill pre-injury is a pretty high ceiling, though. Might not be feasible. I can’t say till I see him against other NBA wings.

#52

by Mortimer on Jul 5, 2010 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Grant Hill had superior athleticism to go with his smarts and high skill level

I think Turner will struggle to defend the 3 with some of the athletes that play that position. I think his lack of athleticiem will hurt him on offense too, where Brandon Roy comparisons seem to have everyone thinking he will be excellent. From my perspective, Roy is one of those ‘exception to the rule’ cases that should really be used as the basis for comparison. A guy who looks slow and methodical but is also quite athletic and can beat you either way.

I’m not saying Turner will be a bust but I just don’t see it going smoothly for him.

Was floating the rumour/idea of Shaq on the Hawks.

THEY GOTTA MOVE HORFORD TO MAKE ROOM FOR SHAQ.

Ya know, with that Joe Johnson contract

Maybe the owners (who rumourtastically are said to be okay with the God-awful Johnson contract because they won’t own the team in a few years) would be dumb enough to trade Horford for short sighted savings or a player they think is neater… like LMA.

Seems more likely that Josh Smith would be the one traded and Horford would play PF.

Horford>Smith though

A better fit for us certainly in a deal for LA

I think putting a guy who can play in the post next to a true center like Greg is a good idea

but that guy still has to be able to make a mid-range jumper to space the floor when necessary. Both Smith and Horford play close to the basket but only Horford can actually hit a jumper with any regularity (Horford hits at .436 on jumpers, Smith at .285 and LA at .417). The reason both are more efficient that LA IMO is that while Horford and Smith have 51% and 36% of their shots as jumpers, LA is at 64%.

Defensively Smith is more spectacular but Horford is a better man defender in the low post and can’t be bullied by bigger PF’s. In addition he is a better rebounder and a lower usage player than both Smith and LA, both qualities that would be useful on the Blazers.

Finally, I would be worried that Smith could return to his old, inefficient ways and in general is more of a headcase than Horford.

Stats:
Horford 82 Games
Smith 82 Games

Good points on offensive fit. I’d still take Smith, just because I think he’s a fair bit better. His defense is both spectacular and incredibly helpful to the team. He gets loads of steals and blocks, is quick enough to defend guards on switches, and his athleticism makes up for a lot of what he lacks in size and strength. He ranks incredibly well in both Adjusted +/- and Regularized APM (Horford is almost as good to be fair).

Accounting for contract, Horford is more desirable. However, the pricey contract is probably one of the reasons Smith could be available.

You used career numbers in the comparison, which is kind of unfair to Smith as he had three OK years followed by a great year, and there’s no reason he can’t continue to not shoot three pters (although you think he’ll regress).

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 8:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, That was my bad

I intended it to be just for the past season. Most of the statistical facts from their careers hold true for last season, although Smith had a PER that was 2 points higher and was more efficient for sure.

For me this is about matching up with the Lakers specifically, as they are THE team we have to beat to get to the top of the mountain. Horford and Oden is about on par with Gasol and Bynum IMO, with Oden>Bynum and Gasol>Horford, and when you consider we would have Camby and/or Przy as the backups bigs I think we have a size advantage over LA – which is damn near impossible.

Smith just doesn’t provide the type of play we need from what I’ve seen, he is like LA in that he is best in transition, something that will continue to be rare here. His defense is fantastic, but he is still a 3/4 tweener on that end and I think he would be abused by the likes of Gasol and Duncan (assuming they have Splitter).

It is an interesting hypothetical nevertheless, I’m just firmly on the Horford side.

Smith's had six years in the league to Snow's three.

Sure, he’s more productive, but Horfy comes with fewer character problems and the potential to be a heckuva lot more. He’s the fifth offensive option in Atlanta, and is content playing great defense and picking up scraps. I love me some classic power forward. Smith is great, but is a headcase and pretty erratic.

I’ll take either.

by Cablinasian on Jul 5, 2010 8:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, you’d be taking a chance that he didn’t go back to shooting threes all the time for sure, but I don’t think he ever had “character issues.” More focus issues, which he didn’t seem to struggle with last year at all.

by atomiccafe on Jul 5, 2010 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Josh Smith is awesome

But I’ll take Horford too, both for fit and because I think he has a lot of potential left and has improved each year.

I think he’s a very good defender and a smart, versatile PF who can actually handle the ball plus hit that mid-range shot many of us feel is necessary to play next to Oden— without relying on it for all of his offense.

He isn’t as dynamic as Josh Smith, but his traditional and physical PF play would maybe even help us more than Smith’s ballhawking and ball-shot-blocking.

I don’t mind how much Smith makes; I think he’s a bargain. I’d be happy with him as well.

I'd also take Al Horford over Josh Smith, since he'd be a better fit alongside ...

Greg Oden. I just don’t see the Atlanta Hawks trading either guy, though, while a hypothetical addition of Shaquille O’Neal would likely mean just a positional shift for both Horford and Smith. If anything, Marvin Williams would be the odd man out there.

Cobb, in his discussion of the incident alluded to it by saying the man was “reflecting on my mother’s color and morals.” Cobb stated in the book that he warned Highlanders manager Harry Wolverton that if something wasn’t done about the man, there would be trouble. No action was taken. At the end of the sixth inning, after being challenged by teammates Sam Crawford and Jim Delahanty to do something about it, Cobb climbed into the stands and attacked Lueker, who it turns out was handicapped (he had lost all of one hand and three fingers on his other hand in an industrial accident). When onlookers shouted at Cobb to stop because the man had no hands, Cobb reportedly replied, “I don’t care if he got no feet!”

The Suns need a general manager. Suckers.
The Suns, who have no general manager or assistant GM at the moment, apparently thought they had to renounce their rights to Stoudemire once they agreed with Warrick and Frye. Alas, that simply isn’t true. It doesn’t matter in what order deals are agreed to; what matters is the order in which they’re signed. Phoenix could have received contracts worth slightly more than $2 million in a sign-and-trade provided they had executed that deal before Warrick signed his contract.

Here’s how it works. Under a little-known provision, the Suns could have removed Frye’s cap hold by signing him with their midlevel exception first, because they still would have been over the cap while Stoudemire’s cap hold stayed on their books. Then they could have sign-and-traded him to another team and taken back just enough salary to leave them $4 million under, enabling them to sign Warrick under the cap. -Hollinger

Then again, the Suns are a financially stingy team that most likely didn’t want to go the sign-and-trade route with Amar’e Stoudemire. I, however, am perplexed the Suns didn’t use such leverage to pry someone away from the Knicks — even if it was only Toney Douglas, who’d make a solid replacement for Leandro Barbosa if he’s dealt to Boston for the retiring Rasheed Wallace — or maybe nab $3,000,000 in cash considerations and trade filler (e.g., Landry Fields’ draft rights) instead. Additionally, Stoudemire probably could’ve gotten a sixth season and higher annual raises (i.e., 10.5% v. 8%) from the New York Knicks in that case.

Yet, in the grand scheme of things, the biggest screw-up here by the Suns is overpaying to retain Channing Frye, as well as believing that Hakim Warrick is anything but a scrub.

Offer for Lee from Twitter/SBN
A source tells Jeff Fletcher of AOL Fanhouse that the Twins have offered prospect outfielder Aaron Hicks and prospect catcher Wilson Ramos to the Mariners for left-hander Cliff Lee.

by skywaker9 on Jul 5, 2010 9:35 PM PDT reply actions

I’ve heard Ramos’s name, its an obvious one since the M’s need a catcher and the Twins don’t. He makes a lot of sense as the main guy. Don’t know anything about Hicks.

by jksnake99 on Jul 5, 2010 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions

i’m with you. heard of Ramos. haven’t heard of Hicks.

i’d like to see more than two prospects come back though. preferably one of them a pitcher.

or just trade him to Atlanta for Heyward. hahaha

by DrivetheLane on Jul 5, 2010 9:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I imagine there will be more than 2 prospects, but Ramos is probably the only front line prospect they’ll get.

by jksnake99 on Jul 5, 2010 9:46 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah. i don’t know enough about him to know how good he is as a hitter. i don’t know. trading for prospects always makes me nervous. it seems like such a gamble.

"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"

by DrivetheLane on Jul 5, 2010 9:47 PM PDT up reply actions

it always is, but of course letting Lee become an FA and hoping you can re-sign him is also a gamble. If Hicks is a big time prospect as skywaker’s post suggests he might be, suddenly it looks like it might be a pretty decent deal.

by jksnake99 on Jul 5, 2010 9:48 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah. but you just never know how it’ll work out. besides, even if Lee signs somewhere else you get 2 draft picks so who knows…..those guys could end up being good also. i’d rather trade Lee for at least one major league ready player. even if it means only getting one other prospect with him.

"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"

by DrivetheLane on Jul 5, 2010 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions

depends. “Major League Ready” could mean ready to be a utility guy or it could be ready to be a every day player. The latter would be great, the former not so much.

that’s true. when i say “major league ready” i mean a player ready to play every day.

OK .....my wife just recieved this email.....

…..I thought I would ask the people of the JD if we should take advantage of this unique opportunity. So what do you all think.?

Hello Dear,

My name is Ghani Datuk Abdullah , I am the branch manager of the Hong Leong Bank Sarawak branch Malaysia. I got your information during my search through the Internet.

I am 52years of age and married with 3 lovely kids. It may interest you to hear that I am a Man of peace and I don’t want problem, but I do not know how you will feel about this because you may have double mind. But I am telling you that this is real and you are not going to regret after doing this transaction with me. I only hope that we can assist each other. But if you don’t want this business offer kindly forget it and I will not contact you again.

I have packaged a financial transaction that will benefit both of us, as the regional manager of the Hong Leong Bank; it is my duty to send in a financial report to my head office in the capital city (Kuala Lumpur- Malaysia) at the end of each year. On the course of the last year 2007 end of last year report, I discovered that my branch in which I am the manager made Five million Five hundred thousand dollar [5,500,000.00] which my head office is not aware of it and will never be aware of. I have since place this fund on what we call SUSPENSE ACCOUNT without any beneficiary. As an official of the bank I can not be directly connected to this fund, so this informed me of contacting you for us to work, so that you can assist and receive this fund into your bank account for us to SHARE.

Mean While you will have 35% of the total fund, Note there are practically no risk involved, it will be bank to bank transfer, all I need from you is to stand claim as the original depositor of this fund who made the deposit with our branch so that my Head office can order the transfer to your designated bank account.

If you accept this offer to work with me, I will appreciate it very much as soon as I receive your response I will give you details on how we can achieve it successfully.

Best Regards
Mr. Ghani Datuk Abdullah

You could focus on the “don’t want problems” part, ask why they are assuming there is a problem, do they think YOU are gonna cause a problem? What problems could happen? Is there a problem with the information they found about you on the internet?

HOW did they find you? Did someone tell them about a problem, and they were going to help fix it?

I feel like talking about basketball

So, the Suns are on the outside looking in on next year’s playoffs right?

There are 5 teams which are more or less locks for the playoffs barring unforeseen catastrophe. Then there are probably 6 teams fighting for 3 playoff spots.

Spurs (old)
Jazz (No Boozer)
Rockets (Yao’s injury)
Clippers (cursed)
Hornets (weak bench, cheap owner)
Suns (No Amare)

Should the Suns try trading Nash before age catches up with him?

I wouldn’t rule the Suns out completely. Even without Amare I like them more than the Clps or Hornets. Kings should probably be on that list also (ahead of the Clips). Memphis too.

I think the Lakers, Mavs, Nuggets, Blazers, Thunder, Rockets, Jazz and Spurs make it, not necessarily in that order, but the Suns would be by 9th choice.
