Idle Junk Drawer - Fifth, Seventh, Two-thousand-Tenth
This is my 42nd post.
I'm going to propose nothing, ask nothing, and contemplate nothing. I will just suggest to you all that you pay more attention to the life around you because if you aren't constantly in awe of the mystery of being and the blessings in your life -- yore doing it wrong.
I dedicate this 42nd post to the one who came, the one who is about to come, and to me. Because without me my life would be way more boring than it is.
and. finally, for three months later..
"Do not shed tears when I have gone
but smile instead because I have lived.
Do not shut your eyes and pray to God that I’ll come back
but open your eyes and see all that I have left behind.
I know your heart will be empty because you cannot see me
but still I want you to be full of the love we shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live only for yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of what happened
between us yesterday.
You can remember me and grieve that I have gone
or you can cherish my memory and let it live on.
You can cry and lose yourself become distraught
and turn your back on the world
or you can do what I want - smile, wipe away the tears,
learn to love again and go on.
I can't go on. I must go on. I'll go on*"

Anyone have good nonpoison ways to kill lots of ants?
I got so many ants, and they are everywhere.

No. The only way I've ever used was poison traps. They work really well though.

Maybe I will need to go that route.
Just wanted to avoid poison with the dogs around but maybe these traps can be set somewhere they can’t get to.

Yeah that's a big concern for me too, as I also have a dog.
As long as the traps are where the dog(s) can’t get to them you should be fine.

borax solution
are these the odoriferous little black ants that small like ammonia when you squish ‘em? No matter. you can mix a solution of sugar water and boric acid onto cotton balls. place them near the highest concentration of ants. The ants will feast on the juice and carry it back to the nest. The queen of the colony must die before the colony will die. Boric acid acts to dry out the ants and clog their ability to “breath”. Since ants don’t have lungs, they respirate through their body and abdomens. I think this is the process. If you don’t have the ingredients your local Wilco or ACE or everything store should carry the product. Pet safe. I prefer the homemade solution because the Terro brand “juice” turns sticky hard too quickly (couple days tho at least)

Ooooohh, terro. That's the brand that I liked the best. Killed my ant problem in 2-3 days and they haven't been back since.

you might also consider some outside bait
since these little critters are typical nested outdoors… mine find their way to any splotch of jam or food that drops on the counter or floor. They make pet safe formulas that you can spread around the perimeter of your place. I really recommend this. The terro can dwindle down the ant population to very low numbers, but if they don’t kill the queen, they will come back. I like watching how the scouts and workers get smaller and smaller as the bait is consumed. Presumably the youngest hatchlings are getting sent out as the older workers die. Muhahaha

Those are Argentine ants. They're conquering the world.
Some fascinating and useful info here.
The Argentine ant kills other ant species. I hope the native Oregon ant species survive.
That stuff works, use it in conjunction with a bleach water solution that you put down wherever they've walked
You need to cut off their chemical trail. Then use the borax where they are coming into the house, you may have to move furniture to find the actual source but it’s very important. Also do not leave any dishes in the sink, don’t leave any water in the sink or on the counter, and absolutely don’t leave even a single grain of sugar to be found anywhere in the house. In my experience you have to chase them around a little bit. Once you close off an entrance with their killing, they’ll likely find another way in so be persistent! Be vigilant!

I get tired of mopping tho
they send out so many scouts and cover ground so fast if there is food or water they’ll find it. Plus I hate the smell of bleached floors, although pine-sol et al also work to nuetralize their chemical trail. Pretty sophisticated little varmints.

I had an internet outage all last night. Got a bit more work done that way, but not much. The fireworks and concert was fun.
And now I can say I once stayed in the same hotel as Toby Keith (and probably Craig Ferguson). Who (Keith) looks much older than on his promotional pictures ;-) But he’s a pretty good entertainer for such a venue.
They had a pretty great video montage about the 3 Kennedy brothers, with actors and local news people reading excerpts from their speeches. That was classy and patriotic and had a local touch at the same time.
Best part of the fireworks was the music from How to Train Your Dragon, that was strangely fitting to the colorful flashes. And the grand finale where they just lit up everything they had for 20 seconds. All in all it wasn’t all that long, about 15 minutes.

He was pretty good for me to round out my fantasy basketball rotation last year
Had some strong shooting games and does everything pretty well. Same age and size as Rudy, but he’s not better than Rudy was in his rookie year.

his stats aren't much on offense
so I guess you’d be getting him for defense. I disliked his defense against Carmelo in the playoffs, and I dislike the way Jazz players play defense in general (all they do is foul). If he were a lockdown defender night in and night out, I’d set aside my stylistic qualms, but I’m not sure that’s the case.
He shoots well enough ( .382 from 3, .829 FT, .483 FG ) and the scouting report says he can finish and goes strong to the rim.

hrrm
(1) His usage is awful low for someone who can go strong and finish at the rim. I haven’t seen enough to make a legit call.
(2) If he can’t go to the rim with real regularity, what is he really giving us that Martell wasn’t?
He seems Party-esque, statistically.
But less of a rebounder.
And I’m always wary of guys who do well in the Sloan system; you can get away with less than skilled ballhandling.
Yup. My concern also. Did you mean Marty-esque?
"What people need to know is that those pictures were taken a year and a half ago, and I've grown since then." - Greg Oden
by dario argento on Jul 5, 2010 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, and more open shots around the rim
I suppose his higher FG% than Rudy’s has more to do with the system than any big difference in ability.
if he is like Marty
that’s kind of disappointing, because I liked Marty personally but not his game so it would suck to get rid of him then get a non-Marty version of Marty, if ya know what I mean.
Also seems like we’d be going in the opposite direction—turning Martell into two players (Babbitt/Matthews, assuming that the MLE is freed up by the money saved from dumping Martell) creates more problems than it solves.
I don't get what Matthews really does for us.
Do we win many more games with him off the bench than we do with Rudy? I can’t imagine we would. Rudy’s a better rebounder, passer, and may be a better shooter. He also costs 4-5 million less next season.
defense, I suppose?
but go look at some of the guys who have ridiculously been considered lockdown wing defenders over the past five years. Ruben Patterson, Mickael Pietrus, Martell Webster, Trenton Hassell. I’m not paying 5 mill for a guy whose primary resume line is having once held Kobe or Carmelo to 4-16. Especially when you see Thibs turning Paul Pierce and Ray Allen into parts of a formidable defensive team.
He's assuredly a better defender than Rudy.
But I have trouble assuming that he’s a better player overall, and he certainly isn’t worth 4-5 million more.
I agree. Keyon Dooling is a nice defensive option at a similar position, and he’d be available for considerably less.
I was looking at Dooling's stats
his rebounding numbers read like a typo! You’d think you could get an RR of more than 3% just by accident!
Not that I really care—with Oden/Camby on the floor all the time, guard rebounding is not a huge concern. Just though it was funny.
I haven't watched enough of him either, but from what I've read I think he cuts strong to the rim to catch and finish.
This would be congruent to Utah’s ( awesome ) offensive system where back screens and cuts get guys open consistently. I haven’t read that he can take his defender off the dribble.

Why does everyone on BE pine for CP3 but Williams gets so little love?
I would looooooove Williams.
I see us as having a bigger chance at landing Lebron than D-Will. It’s not very likely that Utah would deal the face of their franchise to a division rival. I feel like it would be us dealing Roy to the Thunder.

I can see thinking Paul is better than Williams, but a LOT better?
Not to mention Williams seems to own Paul whenever the Jazz and Hornets play.
Meaningless one on one matchups aside
CP3 is a LOT lot better. Deron is good, CP3 is great.
But more than that (because I am sure a lot of fans feel Deron is better), it’s because there are no rumours that the Jazz can’t afford Deron or would be forced to move him because of his contract or for new owners or whatever. That’s been the hope of many a fan for years now, and maybe it’s coming to fruition with Shinn trying to sell the team to a guy who can’t buy it yet.
As unlikely it is that the Hornettes move CP3, it is even less likely the Jazz move Deron. And especially not to Portland.
Plus, c’mon Miled… do you want your kids rooting and cheering for a “man” who combs his hair forward into a false hairline?!?!

The gap between Chris Paul and Deron Williams is pretty large.
CP’s a better rebounder, passer, scorer, thief, turns it over A LOT less, and is better looking. You could make an argument that he’s the best point guard of all time.
you could make the arguement that his career arc will put him in the same class as the great PGs
but lets give him some more time
I am not sure if owning is the correct term
Deron has averaged 16.5/8.6 on 55% shooting in games against Chris Paul
Chris has average 15.5/8.5 on 41% shooting in games against Deron Williams (14 games total).
Is that owning? I am not sure
http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/tiny.cgi?id=nt1RA
a LOT better. There is literally nothing Williams is better at, save for back to the basket play. A healthy Paul is a better ball handler, passer, shooter, passing lanes defender, on ball perimeter defender and rebounder. Based on Paul’s last fully healthy year, the difference could be compared to the difference between say, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony at the 3.
But if you were trying to convince the common fan that CP is better than Deron
comparing them to LeBron and Kobe as your evidence would get you nowhere.
I almost commented "not to say Miled is the common fan"
because I wanted to make sure it was clear that it was unconnected.
I suggest you merely look at Deron’s hair to ascertain the reason for my spite toward him.

I feel another BEdgecation coming on...
Not to put to fine a point on it, but I never said Williams is better than Paul, just asked why he, obviously one of the top PGs in the league, gets no love at BE. It’s not like he isn’t light-years ahead of anyone we’ve had at that position since TP.

I don't think it's that he doesn't get love.
I think it’s more that there’s not even a rumor that he’s available.
And Deron is a very good PG
Maybe the 2nd best when you account for age and all that.
But despite the fact that getting CP3 is not likely, at least there is some truth to the financial part of it that Shinn is going through, and there’s really no reason to think Deron is available to anyone in the league.
And you know I was just joshing with you!!

Because Mortimer ruined his hair for all of us
That, and his unstylish tattoos. Though maybe he could teach Roy how to grow a beard. Not that the beard looks good on him, but at least it’s consistent.
He does seem to have better handles than Rudy. And is more physical finishing with contact.
More like Bayless if he only played SG.
I'll like him on the Blazers if no Spanish newspapers interview him.
I think Rudy is getting more flack than he deserves for his comments about wanting a bigger role on the Blazers. If we keep him, I hope he blows-up next season.
I think his comments about whining over a bigger role.

Yeah, Daniel Gibson is basically a smaller, yet more athletic Steve Blake.
Oh, and on an earlier note, most of the wings who recently played for the Utah Jazz — such as Ronnie Brewer, C.J. Miles, and Wes Matthews — would be poor fits for the Portland Trail Blazers due to below average handles, subpar long-range shooting, and only so-so on-ball defense.
It's surprising that he withdrew early entrance into UNC to finish high school.

Ok... so I'm looking to buy a 360.
Should I go with the new one for 300? If so, are there ways to get it for a good deal? I wonder if Costco carries it…
the best way to get a good deal is to make friends with a 10 year old. tutor them or something. then, after a week, steal their xbox three hundred and sixty.

get the new one for sure
otherwise you gotta buy a wireless adapter. Totally worth it. And they look a little cooler, not that that matters much.
The old ones will be cheaper, of course
Especially if you buy a used one.
There are basically three models: The original, the refresh (which has HDMI on the back) and the new model.
Each model is increasingly efficient, meaning with every generation there is less fan noise, and less power usage. Only the brand new model has wifi built in if that matters to you (it has ethernet on board).
If you can, wait until the new model has been out for a short time, so you can compare prices. Perhaps a used one will be a good price, especially if you don’t need wifi.
Good info.
I’m leaning toward the new one, mainly because noise is a big pet peeve of mine. I HATE how loud the old 360s are.
I have both the old 360 and the 360 slim
a lot depends on what you want it for. if you need wireless internet get the slim because you otherwise it will cost you another 100 for the adapter. if you plan on downloading music and movies you will want the slim (250 gb) if you plan on having two 360s and want to use the same gamertag on both, DO NOT get the slim it doesnt have a memory card slot and you have to recover your gamertag online which sucks. If you plan on getting kinect then you also want the slim because you will have to buy an adapter for the old 360. if you just want to play halo 3 online get an old one, most stores are trying to cut old inventory and offering things like a free game, or a in store gift card

I agree except
I like to port my gamertag which is easy with the memory card. but according to microsoft there should be an update allowing me to just use a usb drive (i have complained multile times) it sucks to be playing online with friends then my wife wants to go to sleep and i have to wait 5-10 min for my account to be recovered in the other room

Hayward is very light on his feet, meaning he is agile. I still see him as a 2 if he can get his shot dialed in. Mike Miller clone.
The game is going 1000mph for Hayward now, but it’s in slow motion for Henderson. Experience counts.

I watched the last minute of that game
I was sitting at this philly cheese steak right by my tattoo shop waiting for my guy to get to work and they had it on one of their TVs. Gordo made a silly pass at the last second when he could have made an easy jumper to tie the game, instead he passed it to Gaines who missed from the 3 point line and they losered.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
Haha, that was something I almost said too

he must be afraid that anytime that he misses a buzzer beater that it will be on the cover of every paper in the nation
and he can’t take the pressure
I'd feel bad about rooting for him to suck if it wasn't so obvious he was a horrible person
He is the chicknens of humans, and I can’t wait to eat Gordon’s thighs as well.
#52
If you knew a player was going to turn into Mike Miller, is that good value at the 9th pick in the draft? Honest question.
interesting question
would depend on the draft. In a typical draft, probably decent value at best. Of course, I really doubt Hayward will be as good as Miller, and I’m one of the people who actually liked Hayward as a pick in the 20s.
The reason I ask is it seems like Miller is sort of Hayward’s best case. That’s awfully low upside for a top 10 pick, so you better be pretty certain he’s going to turn out that well.
Gordon Hayward isn't Mike Miller, though.
Miller’s a much, much more efficient shooter, as well as a ton more athletic than Hayward.
I think shooting can be learned
But Mike Miller’s size and superior athleticism, and passing game, to go along with the shooting, make him clearly superior.
#52
Yeah, Mike Miller's size, passing, and athleticism give him a huge edge over Gordon Hayward.
As it is, I still strongly argue that Hayward is Mike Dunleavy, Jr. That’s not a compliment, either.

Celtics have signed until now unsigned 2008 draft pick Semih Erden. A starting center for Fenerbahce in the Turkish league.
He won the championship, and averaged 8.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Erden shot 62.4% from the field during the 42 Turkish League games that he played in the last season. Erden will be competing for Turkey in the upcoming 2010 FIBA World Championships to be played in his native country.
Not in the press release: He needs to add some bulk, but he could be a serviceable backup center in the NBA.
In the Euroleague he averaged 6.2 and 5.4 and a block in 22 minutes. He’s at least 7’0" and 23. Most scouts say his footwork needs to improve, but he’s usually pretty active around the rim and has good hands.
Better to serve than to be served.

Turrible
Two Italians and a German are sitting in a bar in a red light district, talking about soccer and how many times Italy became soccer world champion. In the end, both Italians get shot in the head when they can’t agree and probably boasted that Italy was better than Germany in soccer, one is dead and the other one is in critical condition. The shooter was a well known patron in the bar, so it won’t be very difficult to find him. The Italians worked next door in a pizzeria.
Unfortunately it’s a true story that happened this morning. Italy won 4 times, 1934, 1938, 1982, 2006, which would have been easy to google. But does it really matter if it was 3 or 5 instead? Some people are aggressive and dumb when drunk which is a sad combination.
I swear I read 75% of that before I realized it wasn't going to be some sort of weird ethnic joke

But yeah, they were funny. Now the greedy NBA wants me to pay $15 to watch a day of summer league. Serious? How good do you think those games are?
Daniel Orton will be a third-string center for a couple of seasons and struggle to get a second contract.
Not too many first-round draft picks don’t have their team option picked up for at least the third season, but Orton is a great candidate for that dishonorable distinction.

I’ve gone back and forth on it this weekend. Pretty sure I’m not going next week.
I think he will be for a long weekend, but I know nothing definitive
And yeah, the roster looks nice but it’s not like you need to see the very first game of Luke and Armon and Elliott in person or you are missing out on a lot… The NBA send me an email advertising the very first games of Hayward, Favors and Turner and even that sounded not all that enticing.
I got that e-mail too.
Honestly, the three reasons I’m likely not going:
1. 100 degrees and tourist season. Ugh.
2. I’m just not that excited to see the new guys
3. They’re showing the games on NBA TV.
I mean, I’d enjoy that atmosphere, and watching all the players, coaches, and execs, but I’m not feeling it this year.
I got excited when my mom said I should go when she's in Minnesota next week

Miami comes out the best
but with Wade wearing down, and absolutely no supporting cast, it’s still not a better team than Orlando IMO.
Cleveland will still win a ton of games, Miami moves into the top 4 in the East and challenges for the top 3, Chicago maybe moves past Atlanta.
You'd think
their elite team status seems pretty dependent on KG, and if he plays big minutes during the regular season to keep them in the top 4, he’d probably be gassed for the playoffs (2k minutes seemed to do him in this year). So it’s a catch-22.
That's probably as good as it gets for NBA parity
And awful news for the Bulls and Knicks, so that’s a bonus.
No to college basketball
and I can only handle the first round of the draft. Then I just wait until the Blazers pick.
I looked ’em up. One of them went to some school called Stanford and the other went to Syracuse. Looks like you and glove are gonna be Knicks fans.
Team KP
Heheh
They’ll fill the team with a few of the other free agents, maybe they try to steal Ray Allen. Then they try to use Eddy’s contract in mid-season.
The sad truth is they still might be better this coming year if they add just a few good players.
i really thought Wade+Bosh would end up in CHI and Boozer in Miami.
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
the Lebron to CHI stuff always seemed a bit off to me for some reason. i just didn’t see him wanting to be in MJ’s shadow for that long. he would have put a ton of pressure on himself and his career if he went (or still goes) to CHI.
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
Sounds almost ideal for not creating a superpower :-)
Bosh + Wade would definitely be a strong force in the east to go far in the playoffs, but it’s not automatically better than what other teams can throw at them. It’s not Wade + Shaq still in prime + ref support.
If they can build the team around them, it's close to Kobe + Pau + Ref support.
So they should have a chance in the East.
I expect Wade to decline rather fast. Maybe even faster than Johnson, and paying Johnson the max is - to stay in the ATL region - ludacris.
i dunno
where do you get Bynum + Odom when you don’t have any assets? Everyone likes to bag on ’em, but they are very very good players.
Note I said the East, not the NBA
I think they can win the East, but the Finals is a different animal.
Dwight Howard covers a lot of team flaws
But Vince Carter is aging, Rashard Lewis is Rashard Lewis, and I’m not sure they have a plan in place to fill the roles needed around Howard and, presumably, Nelson.
Orlando has big flaws
but it’s also the team with probably the second best player in the league, and led the league in point differential last year. Absent a significant drop-off from Rashard and VC next year (and it’s not like they were amazing last year), they are still quite a bit better than Wade (aging) + Bosh (doesn’t play defense) + a bunch of scrap heap players.
Miami will still have 10 or 11m to spend after signing Bosh and re-signing Wade, right?
They could still make an offer to a couple free agents. Josh Childress, Mike Miller, Brendan Haywood, even a Brad Miller.
After that, they’d have to fill out the roster with whatever they can get.
they probably won't
I was more talking about the possibility of further production drop-offs by VC and Rashard.
In the meantime, Brendan Haywood, Brad Miller, and Mike Miller would all ...
be nice fits alongside a core of Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade. Keyon Dooling would make for a nice backup behind Mario Chalmers, too.
That is the optimum scenario.
Wade and Bosh is good, but the team around them will be awful and not ultimately as scary as it could be. Chicago adding Boozer doesn’t make them a contender, Amare rots in New York with lots of cash, and LeBron stays in Cleveland and avoids setting fire to the city.

Dear NBA,
It’s the offseason. While most of us will spend that time missing basketball and over-analyzing it, perhaps you could take a few months to completely redesign NBA TV. You know, new music, new graphics, maybe change out a few of the hosts, work on a few new shows, and, like NHL TV already does, how about you spend more time playing classic games?
And while you're at it
Improve LPBB. I submitted my survey to them, expressing my displeasure at it.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
If they don't have actual improvements to LP BB this season, I'll take it as a sign they don't care.
Seriously just contact MLB and use their awesome technology
Blacking out every NBA TV game is bad enough, but the quality of the games that do come through is not good.
Whereas MLB.TV can do four games at once in perfect HD.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
MLB and NCAA/CBS use a different technology provider
While the technology provider of the NBA with its outdated technology sits in Secaucus, NY. Go figure. And the rest of NBA TV and Interactive is outsourced to TNT in Atlanta.
I don't really care about classic games all that much. But the classic drafts were fun to watch.
Then again I have ESPN Classic all year and barely use that. Soccer matches from way back when? Boxers that are long forgotten? Races I know the result of? Maybe occasionally a film about the 19xx Olympics, but that’s pretty much it.
I so want this to happen
I really hope we can make it work. I’d feel sorry for Monty but not that sorry.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I could learn to live with it
Phil Mickelson: "A Great shot is when you pull it off.....a smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it"’
I'm a little surprised Chicago hasn't offered Derrick Rose + cap relief for Chris Paul
It lets NO save face with a young PG who replaces Chris Paul. And it tells LBJ, we’re willing to make the big trades to win you a title.
But I haven’t run the numbers to see if it’s effective, so I could be talking about a useless idea.
I don’t think chicago has cap relief to offer… they were structured for this FA period not the next one
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
Yeah, say they offer Rose plus Deng plus a pick and cash for Paul and Posey. That's pretty attractive for New Orleans.
but deng’s contract sucks.
rose + noah for paul, posey, and okafor (provided they still have enough $$$ to sign lebron)
Posey also has two years left, and Deng is much better at this point in their careers
I mainly put in Deng because Chicago doesn’t need him anymore, and Stojakovich expires anyway so moving him isn’t attractive to NO.
Yeah. I withheld Deng due to the contract.
Even with it, NO has to at least stop and think about it.
I don’t think LBJ would be excited to lose Noah, whom he probably would see as a replacement for Anderson V.
Either way, NO and Chicago would seem to have a lot to discuss, if Chi thinks they’re about to be stuck with Boozer and none of the Big 3.
Taking back that much money in contracts would screw up Chicago's cap space, though.
In this scenario, it’s got to be nothing more than a one-for-one swap of Derrick Rose heading out and Chris Paul coming in to the Windy City.
Actually, that's not a bad idea for either team.
Derrick Rose is a definite drop-off from Chris Paul, but it’s at least a marketable trade proposal that can con fans in New Orleans into still buying tickets.
ah
he is wooing lebron to come to portland??

An angle not discussed yet.
Amare on the Knicks means they aren’t as awful, which will certainly hurt Houston. The Rockets have the Knicks’ unprotected first the next two seasons.
If they lose Lee and don't get any other major acquisitions,
I don’t think they’ll be much better than they have been.
Me too.
There are some good players out there. They won’t have a well-rounded roster, but they can be better than last year, with Curry still an expiring contract.
If the New York Knicks want to make the playoffs this season, then dealing Eddy Curry for ...
somebody of on-court value will be a move in the right direction. Even then, though, the Knicks aren’t a championship contender without LeBron James in the fold. James, of course, is highly, highly unlikely to sign with the Knicks at this point.
The picks aren't unprotected.
The 2011 first-round draft pick is just an opportunity to swap selections and, moreover, is top-one protected. If the Knicks do get the first pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, New York’s obligations to Houston are extinguished.
The future conditional draft pick(s) is a top-five protected first-round draft pick from 2012 through 2015, while becoming a 2015 second-round draft pick and a 2016 second-round draft pick if not conveyed by then.

They hired the same search firm
The Ducks used to get a college BB coach.
Hopefully they don’t start by going after super big names they have no chance of getting (Buford mainly).
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Maybe they should remember how they got KP. Or how the Thundersonics got Presti.
Or how the Rockets got Morey. Not by looking at “okay, who recently got fired from a pretty crappy situation” or “who once was good and is now out of a GM job”? And yeah, you have a very tiny chance to hire someone out of a good situation, even if they would offer someone like Presti way more money than he currently makes.
Roger Mason, Jr. had a down year last season, but he's honestly one of the few players who ...
could play alongside Jerryd Bayless and help hide that gunner’s numerous flaws. Well, perimeter defense would still be an issue with the second unit; however, Mason, Jr. would still be an upgrade over Rudy Fernandez in that regard. And, if Mason, Jr. can return to 2007-2008/2008-2009 form, then Fernandez could be dealt elsewhere for future assets — such as to the Chicago Bulls for a future first-round draft pick (via the Charlotte Bobcats) — and a mediocre rookie like Elliot Williams won’t be relied upon for playing time on a team that’s supposedly looking to make strides next season.
Which flaws does Mason hide?
Bayless’s flaws:
(1) Can’t shoot from the outside
(2) Not a natural distributor
(3) Crappy defense (at least for now)
Mason’s a decent outside shooter, but that’s the easiest flaw to cover. He gets very few assists, turns the ball over quite a bit given is USG and AST, and doesn’t play very good defense. I liked your idea of Keyon Dooling better.
Actually, Roger Mason, Jr. is a very methodical playmaker and a pretty good facilitator ...
on offense. Over his career, Mason, Jr. has roughly a 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio — which is 1.9:1 to be exact — on the other hand, though, Bayless has a 1.67:1 assist-to-turnover ratio for his career. Besides, if Nate McMillan is destined to be head coach for at least one more season, then Mason, Jr. makes sense on a two-year, BAE-level contract, with a team option for the second season.
I understand he wouldn't kill us
my issue is with us figuring out how to use our BAE on players who are unlikely to play very much before we try to address the very real problems with our roster going forward.
Well, I'm still a huge fan of a giant consolidation trade. I don't see that occurring, ...
however, since the guys who are currently in Portland’s front office seem rather timid when it comes to making the big move. So, with regards to the roster’s current state, trading Rudy Fernandez for a future first-round draft pick — as I detailed in one of my above posts — and replacing him with Roger Mason, Jr. is a fine stopgap move. It’s certainly not going to put this team over the top, though.
Can’t argue with that, though I’d want a top-10 pick for Rudy and I don’t know if we can get that kind of value.
Here's the protection on the future first-round pick Charlotte owes Chicago.
2012: Top-14
2013: Top-12
2014: Top-10
2015: Top-8
2016: Unprotected
For Rudy Fernandez, that’s more than fair value. The Chicago Bulls could use Fernandez, too, as he’s cheap and has got the long-distance shooting stroke that’s needed there.
Mason wouldn't be too bad as a backup wing on the cheap

I wouldn't exactly call Roger Mason, Jr. a "wing," but rather an oversized combo guard.
As it pertains to cheap wings, Keith Bogans would be an all right target. That’s funny, too, as both played for the San Antonio Spurs last season. Yet, even though Bogans would’ve been a nice, cheap replacement for Martell Webster, the team seems intent on giving Luke Babbitt a run at the 3. Mason, Jr., however, could still have a spot on this squad at the BAE, although that’s only if Rudy Fernandez is moved elsewhere for a future asset (i.e., draft pick).
We may as well try Babbitt out. It’s not like guys similar to Bogans aren’t going to be available if he flames out.
that's true
I tend to play fast and loose with definitions when I can. So, “not a PG” becomes “wing”.

It is frustrating.
We’re targeting players who are probably 8-10th man in the rotation types.
I want a GM.
the problem is two fold
Teams are going crazy this off season and driving up prices.
We might not want to even use the full MLE because it puts the team into the luxury tax.

So now that the Knicks have not lost out completely on FAs, who will they try to attract to team up with Amare?
Who has stated in the past that he didn’t like D’Antoni using him at center, and that D’Antoni wasn’t an accessible players coach.
Parker? Felton? Someone like Mike Miller? Still hoping to land LeBron or Wade?
here's another question
Did the Knicks take Amar’e because they knew something concrete about where Bosh was going? That would mean only LeBron is really still on the market as far as the top tier guys (then there’s David Lee I suppose).
Trying to land Al Jefferson for Lee might be an attractive move, if the Wolves are really dumb enough to do that
Right, David Lee needs to be moved at this point.
The New York Knicks and the Minnesota T’wolves make for poor trading partners, though, since swapping Lee forAl Jefferson doesn’t do anything to fill the needs and holes of either team.
I would want more for Parker
And with McDyess and Splitter and Blair and a few other bigs I see no need for Lee in San Antonio.
A lot of it depends on Tiago Splitter, since him coming over would make David Lee unecessary.
Yet, if Splitter stays overseas in Spain, though, then Lee would be a solid fit alongside Tim Duncan in the starting lineup, while Antonio McDyess and DeJuan Blair come off the bench.

I'm not sure about that.
Tiago Splitter will be an interesting test case, though. So, if the San Antonio Spurs do offer up Splitter the full MLE, I think he takes it.

OKC came back from 21 down to beat Boston. Mullins with 24, Harden 19, Maynor 15. Harangody with 23 for Boston. Might be another good find by the Celts.
Mullins means business :-)
OKC might finally find some serviceable center between him, Aldrich and Pleiss. Though Pleiss likely will stay in Bamberg for 1 more year, and they should try to get a proven starter some how some where.
Mullens has great hands, great mobility, great touch, and a few legit offensive post moves.
But I’ll never be able to take him seriously until he realizes he’s 7’1" and 270.
Harangody is going to get eaten alive by NBA 3s and 4s.
You know what's good? At least the Suns have all their future draft picks
That team is lottery bound at some point in the future, maybe for several years unless Dragic becomes the new Nash and Channing has a lot more years like last year and they luck out in the draft – or the owner retires.
I wonder how the NBA arrived at this list of players to promote their summer league package
Which players have participated in NBA Summer League in previous years?

I was watching ESPN today and they introduced Jason Heyward as "Future Hall-of-Famer Jason Heyward."

I would argue that he isn't even the best rookie this year.
Slumped majorly before he got injured, and Jaime Garcia in St. Louis has been pitching incredibly well since the beginning of the season coming back from Tommy John.
But yes, the Jason Heyward hype is almost as ridiculous as the Stephen Strasburg hype.

Doesn't make sense why they would play him then.

That's fine
but calling him an All-Star snub? Ridiculous. He’s pitched, what, 6 starts? And he’s performed alright against the only 2 ballclubs that were even contenders in the Mets (2ER in 5) and the Braves (3ER in 6 innings). Otherwise, he pitched against Kansas City, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and the Chicago White Sox.
He may be a guy that people want to see, but I’ll take the guys that have actually pitched half a season.

ZImmerman and Willingham both deserve to be there. ZImmerman in particular. I honestly think Manuel might have done the worst job picking an allstar team of alltime. What he did to Votto just infuriates me.
3.6 WAR.
No all-star there.
The Mariners are an interesting team. They have four players who are absolutely all-star caliber, but the rest of the team is so poor, people won’t recognize all four Mariner standouts.
4 all stars from the M’s? Ichiro, Felix, Lee and…….????
who is the other one? Guti?
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
I would only say Lee and Ichiro are surefire
Felix is a bit iffy for me, but I would probably end up putting him in anyway, and Gutierrez doesn’t have the offense to get voted in on.

It's about runs above average.
Gutierrez has developed into a nicely above average hitter, and he saves a lot of runs in the field. He’s all-star caliber.
Gutierrez is the best defender I have seen in my view.
I just think his offensive numbers (.350 OBP, .771 OPS) will turn off voters to voting for him instead of someone like McCutchen (Where the hell is he on the All star voting?)

"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
wOBA is an advanced stat used to calculate offensive value.
It’s an improved OPS, but scaled to match OBP. Guti’s .346 wOBA is safely a bit ahead of the league average hitter, so you’d hope the managers would see that his overall value isn’t hindered by his hitting too much. Oh well. Can’t expect that when you see the teams they do select.
I actually reference wOBA in another post in another subthread.
And I actually believe in it. I am simply just going by what the average baseball fan sees, which is not wOBA. They only look at the traditional stats like OBP, SLUG, RBI’s, etc. While wOBA is a great all-around stat to use in my view, it wouldn’t matter in an all-star selection to most people.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"
-George Carlin (RIP)
Willingham is another good call.
He happens to be 7th in wOBA (Stat that measures overall offensive ability) in the entire league, as well as having really good numbers, but no, he get’s screwed over for Omar freaking Infante
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

You can talk about deserve or not deserve, and based on number of innings pitched I agree he didn’t really merit it, but Strasburg is absolutely one of the top 10 pitchers in the NL. Zero question about it. He may be top 5.
I don't know about top 10.
Don’t know if you have noticed, but the NL is absolutely loaded with pitching. Halladay, Wainwright, Jimenez, Josh Johnson, and Lincecum just off the top of my head for top 5 (Not in any order, just names), and there is also Hudson, Gallardo, Carpenter, Garcia, Cain, etc.
I don’t know if I would take Strasburg, no matter how good his stuff is, over those guys just yet, maybe in a year I would, but not now.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"
-George Carlin (RIP)
yep, tough to judge at this point. I’m going on a combination of minor league stats (stuff like K/9, K/BB, WHIP), major league stats, what I’ve read from people who know a lot (e.g Keith Law) and my own observations.
Strasburg has the best FIP of any NL starter at the moment. Its very easy to argue he’s in the top 3. You could also make a case for him quite a bit lower.
For me, he’s in the top 5. Ahead of Wainwright for sure. Maybe ahead of Lincecum and Jimenez also.
I honestly think he’d be my 3rd choice to start a game I had to win of any NL pitcher, after Halladay and Johnson.
Small sample size though— very true. Hard to know for sure.
You must not like Wainwright very much.
He’s the 2nd best pitcher in the NL behind Johnson in my book anyway with Halladay a close 3rd.
That said, I want to see him face a club like Cincinnati before I proclaim him the next big thing, because, I mean, anyone can look like an all-star against the Pirates…His competition has been underwhelming to say the least.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"
-George Carlin (RIP)
Well, I may be a bit biased as a Cardinal fan
but he has what I consider one of the best pitches in baseball. If you combined Wainwright’s curve, Lincecum’s changeup, Halladay or Rivera’s cutter, and perhaps Johnson’s fastball, you would have an invincible pitcher.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

Ok, I see Amare is a Knick-- heehee
Anything else I miss?
Now Amare can see how life is with Nash.

But now Amare will attract all the great free agents to NY!
Alan Hahn already made the first joke on Twitter about how only the Pope got a bigger welcome in NY – but is better on defense.
And who wouldn't wanna play with a ballhoggy no defense big who NEEDs touches or he will bitch about it to the coach and possibly the press?
Didn’t Lebron ask the Cavs to get Jamison over Amare, because of Amare’s ego?
#52
I think no matter what
They’ll be in the 30 win range and not be a threat to have a super high lottery pick. There will still be plenty of bad teams, worse than the Knicks.

I'm so tired of this offseason.
Too much rumor and innuendo. Let’s plz get going with hiring a GM and targeting a few players that can spread the floor and play defense.
Blargh
It is a fun offseason so far for me.
I dunno what the rumours of weak-sauce players mean; I agree we can do better with the MLE than address a non-need for a backup guard.
#52
Well, sure
Oden being healthy fixes a lot of things all on its own. I would much rather hear more about him than if we’re gonna sign a 9th man for 3 million a year.
#52
I guess that's my frustration.
Everything we’re planning for is dependent upon Greg staying healthy. It doesn’t really matter if Wes Matthews is marginally better as a backup 2 if we’re playing without Greg, so I’m finding it hard to get too excited about any of the free agent buzz.
I wouldn’t mind it getting to October a little more quickly.
None of the players rumoured to be targeted by us are BAD players
Just meh, and don’t really address any real need.

I want software that writes exactly what is in my brain and organizes it into a structure that makes sense.
It's not too much to ask, right?
After all, I know what I want to write and have already written many pages and re-arranged it for hours. But it doesn’t flow yet, and there are still things missing or duplicate. The software should assist me more, especially with keeping things short and in a good order. Where is Clippy 2.0?!

Phil Mickelson: "A Great shot is when you pull it off.....a smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it"’
Man, this ram we had
He’d attack my sisters and mom and try to kill them, so I would have to be a He-Man and grab the ram by its horns and flip it on its back and pin it, to show it who was boss.
You had to alpha it and be super rough with it, because it was MEAN.
My dad did the same, though he has a lot more experience with that sort of thing since he grew up as a farmer and I am a soft city kid.
It was a really heavy ram, but it was funny how it would go limp once you finally pinned it down. It’d say “ok, you win, I sorry” as it was on its back.

Anyone ever have roosters?
ANOTHER reason I hate chickens are that roosters are roostersuckers. They are MEAN.
They also would keep trying to kill my sisters and mom. We got rid of all of the roosters because we got tired of kicking them. They are awful creatures and deserve to die many times over.
Oh, we’d list “free roosters” on Craigslist and every single time the people who’d call and ask about them were straight-from-Asia type Asians. We gave away roosters about 10 separate times and EACH TIME (no joke) within a half hour of it being posted on Craigslist, Asian immigrants would call for the free chickens.
#52
Roosters are mean. I have a story...beware...it is kinda long
So when I was growing up in GP ….I was basically a townie. But when I was about 13 or 14 my best friend lived on a little ranch outside of town and the neighbor’s rooster ran around loose and kept attacking my friend, his brother, his mom and dogs. So finally the word came down from the mom that we had permission to use extreme prejudice against the rooster the next time it came on the property. My buddy had a .22 rifle and the stakeout was on!!
So anyway, the next time this rooster showed up we started blasting away at it …we musta hit it two or three times but the thing would NOT die. It kept coming back …day after day. We kept shooting and it kept squawking and feathers kept flying everywhere. And everyday …here it would come again. It was like our very own Moby Dick to two 14 years Captain Ahabs.
Finally we decided that we had to take a different approach. We had watched Gilligan’s Island enough to know that next best way to deal with this thing was to dig a giant pit for a trap. It was about 4 feet deep and maybe 3-4 feet across. We laid branches and stuff across the hole and stood back and admired our work. The only problem was ….getting the rooster to walk across and fall into our trap……the obvious answer, of course, was bait. Now…what do chickens eat? Now that I am older and wiser, I realize that many things would have worked….chicken feed….corn…hell, even corn flakes. But at that time we were not wise in the ways of farm animals, so we went with ….baloney on a stick!
Needless to say, we didn’t succeed in capturing the rooster……however when we checked the next morning we realized why the dog (a sheltie) hadn’t come when we called the evening before.
Anyway….we never did finish off the infamous Zombie Rooster of Grants Pass…..but his story is still told around those parts …when the night is dark, and people are drunk.

At least the chickens could associate humans = food, and would let you feed them.
Ducks just run around like you are going to stick hot pokers in their eyes.

I remember seeing my Grandma Magnum killing birds too
She’d just grab them by the neck and spin them. It seemed like the easiest and most humane way.
One time we were in her kitchen and while we were drawing at the table, she opened the kitchen window and grabbed a rifle-type-gun from behind the fridge and shot a pheasant in the front yard. It was so delicious!

Apparently it's common knowledge in the NBA writing guild that Amare's contract can't be insured
So he is one of the 11 players on the list. Joining Deng and Curry and Yao. And probably soon will be joined by Oden. I would probably put on Joe Johnson just because.
Are there any more BEdge Bowl details?

There's a strong chance for LMA to play in Worlds this summer, I think.
Looks like the rest of the team has ditched it.
am I happy about that?

by Y5k on Jul 5, 2010 6:12 PM PDT up reply actions
As do I.
We can see that his summer’s haven’t helped a lot so far, so maybe a different type of training would help him.
The frustrating thing with him is that his faults seem so easy to fix. It should only take a summer for him to learn to dribble better or shoot from a foot farther out. Maybe a summer of the international game is what he needs.
That's what I'm thinking.
A realization that threes are better than long twos and maybe he gets that TS% up to 56%.
I guess the hope is that the realization would come after hitting a bunch of threes in Worlds.
I’m not sure if that’s realistic, though.
Well, either he’ll be shooting 3s at Worlds or move in and start shooting contested 16 footers. We’ll see.
I think that if he wants to be on the team, he will be.
His style of play is perfectly suited for the international game. We’ll see.

Would you win more games with Omar Infante hitting and available to play his vaunted “utility role,” or with Votto hitting and playing eight fielders?
really just a bad joke
I was trying to say Votto is so much better than Infante on offense, and that Infante’s defensive contributions are so marginal, you’d rather have Votto’s offense and play with 8 fielders. Dunno if that makes sense.
This might be the impetus for some changes
Minimum number of at-bats, and minimum number of pitching appearances for an ASG appearance.
Nice, gotta love Votto getting jobbed.

It seems like such an easy comparison
But Turner really does seem like Roy.
He also seems kinda SG sized.
#52
He might not, I ain't sure
One drive he had and the way he scored with his left at the rim, right after dribbling behind his back, was so Roy-esque it made me miss seeing healthy Roy even more.
#52
i also don’t think he is going to be as supremely efficient as brandon is…. he turned the ball over more at ohio state
Yeah, it was something like 4 turnovers a game, right?
I still like what I see and think he’ll be a cool player.
#52
Um...no.
Turner has been the better shooter if you compared their college stats.
"I think he’s been doing some good things. I think he’s been doing some good things. He’s had to play a lot of minutes lately with Blake being out. I think he’s been doing some good things." -Nate McMillan
the one year turner shot 44% from 3, he only took .8 3PA a game. brandon never took more than 1 three per game in a year until his senior year (2.9, which is a full three more than turner ever averaged in a year), which was the only year he averaged over 40% from 3.
they’ve had similar 2pt% numbers, but even on those numbers brandon has a slight edge.
I'm still going with Evan Turner as being a legit point forward at the 3 like a young, healthy Grant Hill.
Evan Turner is no Grant Hill
I don’t think his game will translate as well as everyone is thinking.
"Money aint got no owners, only spenders"
- Omar Little on 2010 NBA Free Agency
He might not be a 21/7/7 like Grant Hill was
But Hill also averaged almost 4 turnovers a game and I think Turner seems capable of being a similar all-round stat stuffer.
Grant Hill pre-injury is a pretty high ceiling, though. Might not be feasible. I can’t say till I see him against other NBA wings.
#52
Grant Hill had superior athleticism to go with his smarts and high skill level
I think Turner will struggle to defend the 3 with some of the athletes that play that position. I think his lack of athleticiem will hurt him on offense too, where Brandon Roy comparisons seem to have everyone thinking he will be excellent. From my perspective, Roy is one of those ‘exception to the rule’ cases that should really be used as the basis for comparison. A guy who looks slow and methodical but is also quite athletic and can beat you either way.
I’m not saying Turner will be a bust but I just don’t see it going smoothly for him.

Only way I think it could end well would be if LeBron decided to go there as well
The LBJ-STAT pick and roll could be more devastating than the Nash/STAT one has been. LeBron also understands the value of defense for chasing championships so might be able to better motivate Amare/Kick his arse when he’s slacking.
That scenario is looking pretty unlikely at this point though.

Horford>Smith though
A better fit for us certainly in a deal for LA
"Money aint got no owners, only spenders"
- Omar Little on 2010 NBA Free Agency
I think putting a guy who can play in the post next to a true center like Greg is a good idea
but that guy still has to be able to make a mid-range jumper to space the floor when necessary. Both Smith and Horford play close to the basket but only Horford can actually hit a jumper with any regularity (Horford hits at .436 on jumpers, Smith at .285 and LA at .417). The reason both are more efficient that LA IMO is that while Horford and Smith have 51% and 36% of their shots as jumpers, LA is at 64%.
Defensively Smith is more spectacular but Horford is a better man defender in the low post and can’t be bullied by bigger PF’s. In addition he is a better rebounder and a lower usage player than both Smith and LA, both qualities that would be useful on the Blazers.
Finally, I would be worried that Smith could return to his old, inefficient ways and in general is more of a headcase than Horford.
Stats:
Horford 82 Games
Smith 82 Games
Side by Side
"Money aint got no owners, only spenders"
- Omar Little on 2010 NBA Free Agency
Good points on offensive fit. I’d still take Smith, just because I think he’s a fair bit better. His defense is both spectacular and incredibly helpful to the team. He gets loads of steals and blocks, is quick enough to defend guards on switches, and his athleticism makes up for a lot of what he lacks in size and strength. He ranks incredibly well in both Adjusted +/- and Regularized APM (Horford is almost as good to be fair).
Accounting for contract, Horford is more desirable. However, the pricey contract is probably one of the reasons Smith could be available.
You used career numbers in the comparison, which is kind of unfair to Smith as he had three OK years followed by a great year, and there’s no reason he can’t continue to not shoot three pters (although you think he’ll regress).
Yeah, That was my bad
I intended it to be just for the past season. Most of the statistical facts from their careers hold true for last season, although Smith had a PER that was 2 points higher and was more efficient for sure.
For me this is about matching up with the Lakers specifically, as they are THE team we have to beat to get to the top of the mountain. Horford and Oden is about on par with Gasol and Bynum IMO, with Oden>Bynum and Gasol>Horford, and when you consider we would have Camby and/or Przy as the backups bigs I think we have a size advantage over LA – which is damn near impossible.
Smith just doesn’t provide the type of play we need from what I’ve seen, he is like LA in that he is best in transition, something that will continue to be rare here. His defense is fantastic, but he is still a 3/4 tweener on that end and I think he would be abused by the likes of Gasol and Duncan (assuming they have Splitter).
It is an interesting hypothetical nevertheless, I’m just firmly on the Horford side.
"Money aint got no owners, only spenders"
- Omar Little on 2010 NBA Free Agency
Smith's had six years in the league to Snow's three.
Sure, he’s more productive, but Horfy comes with fewer character problems and the potential to be a heckuva lot more. He’s the fifth offensive option in Atlanta, and is content playing great defense and picking up scraps. I love me some classic power forward. Smith is great, but is a headcase and pretty erratic.
I’ll take either.
Yeah, you’d be taking a chance that he didn’t go back to shooting threes all the time for sure, but I don’t think he ever had “character issues.” More focus issues, which he didn’t seem to struggle with last year at all.
Josh Smith is awesome
But I’ll take Horford too, both for fit and because I think he has a lot of potential left and has improved each year.
I think he’s a very good defender and a smart, versatile PF who can actually handle the ball plus hit that mid-range shot many of us feel is necessary to play next to Oden— without relying on it for all of his offense.
He isn’t as dynamic as Josh Smith, but his traditional and physical PF play would maybe even help us more than Smith’s ballhawking and ball-shot-blocking.
I don’t mind how much Smith makes; I think he’s a bargain. I’d be happy with him as well.
#52
I'd also take Al Horford over Josh Smith, since he'd be a better fit alongside ...
Greg Oden. I just don’t see the Atlanta Hawks trading either guy, though, while a hypothetical addition of Shaquille O’Neal would likely mean just a positional shift for both Horford and Smith. If anything, Marvin Williams would be the odd man out there.
but he’s looking at a team that signed a 28 year old to a max contract…..
so he might be barking up the correct tree if he wants money
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
Yeah, I still think the best fit for Shaquille O'Neal is to go to the Dallas Mavericks. Mark Cuban ...
would also have to re-sign Brendan Haywood, though, so as to provide an offense/defense balance at the pivot.
Especially after Joel poked him in the eye back in December...

On May 15, 1912, Cobb assaulted a heckler, Claude Lueker, in the stands in New York. Cobb, in his discussion of the incident alluded to it by saying the man was “reflecting on my mother’s color and morals.” Cobb stated in the book that he warned Highlanders manager Harry Wolverton that if something wasn’t done about the man, there would be trouble. No action was taken. At the end of the sixth inning, after being challenged by teammates Sam Crawford and Jim Delahanty to do something about it, Cobb climbed into the stands and attacked Lueker, who it turns out was handicapped (he had lost all of one hand and three fingers on his other hand in an industrial accident). When onlookers shouted at Cobb to stop because the man had no hands, Cobb reportedly replied, “I don’t care if he got no feet!”

The Suns need a general manager. Suckers.
The Suns, who have no general manager or assistant GM at the moment, apparently thought they had to renounce their rights to Stoudemire once they agreed with Warrick and Frye. Alas, that simply isn’t true. It doesn’t matter in what order deals are agreed to; what matters is the order in which they’re signed. Phoenix could have received contracts worth slightly more than $2 million in a sign-and-trade provided they had executed that deal before Warrick signed his contract.
Here’s how it works. Under a little-known provision, the Suns could have removed Frye’s cap hold by signing him with their midlevel exception first, because they still would have been over the cap while Stoudemire’s cap hold stayed on their books. Then they could have sign-and-traded him to another team and taken back just enough salary to leave them $4 million under, enabling them to sign Warrick under the cap. -Hollinger
by Nick Van Excellent on Jul 5, 2010 8:33 PM PDT reply actions
That's really odd, too, because the Phoenix Suns reportedly have a capologist already in Jim Pitman.
http://www.nba.com/suns/news/pitman_bio.html
Then again, the Suns are a financially stingy team that most likely didn’t want to go the sign-and-trade route with Amar’e Stoudemire. I, however, am perplexed the Suns didn’t use such leverage to pry someone away from the Knicks — even if it was only Toney Douglas, who’d make a solid replacement for Leandro Barbosa if he’s dealt to Boston for the retiring Rasheed Wallace — or maybe nab $3,000,000 in cash considerations and trade filler (e.g., Landry Fields’ draft rights) instead. Additionally, Stoudemire probably could’ve gotten a sixth season and higher annual raises (i.e., 10.5% v. 8%) from the New York Knicks in that case.
Yet, in the grand scheme of things, the biggest screw-up here by the Suns is overpaying to retain Channing Frye, as well as believing that Hakim Warrick is anything but a scrub.

Offer for Lee from Twitter/SBN
A source tells Jeff Fletcher of AOL Fanhouse that the Twins have offered prospect outfielder Aaron Hicks and prospect catcher Wilson Ramos to the Mariners for left-hander Cliff Lee.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I’ve heard Ramos’s name, its an obvious one since the M’s need a catcher and the Twins don’t. He makes a lot of sense as the main guy. Don’t know anything about Hicks.
i’m with you. heard of Ramos. haven’t heard of Hicks.
i’d like to see more than two prospects come back though. preferably one of them a pitcher.
or just trade him to Atlanta for Heyward. hahaha
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
I imagine there will be more than 2 prospects, but Ramos is probably the only front line prospect they’ll get.
yeah. i don’t know enough about him to know how good he is as a hitter. i don’t know. trading for prospects always makes me nervous. it seems like such a gamble.
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
it always is, but of course letting Lee become an FA and hoping you can re-sign him is also a gamble. If Hicks is a big time prospect as skywaker’s post suggests he might be, suddenly it looks like it might be a pretty decent deal.
yeah. but you just never know how it’ll work out. besides, even if Lee signs somewhere else you get 2 draft picks so who knows…..those guys could end up being good also. i’d rather trade Lee for at least one major league ready player. even if it means only getting one other prospect with him.
"My love winks, she does not bother / She knows too much to argue or to judge"
depends. “Major League Ready” could mean ready to be a utility guy or it could be ready to be a every day player. The latter would be great, the former not so much.
that’s true. when i say “major league ready” i mean a player ready to play every day.
we’ll see if KC ’s leadoff hint then sacrifice strategy works.

Hello Dear,
My name is Ghani Datuk Abdullah , I am the branch manager of the Hong Leong Bank Sarawak branch Malaysia. I got your information during my search through the Internet.
I am 52years of age and married with 3 lovely kids. It may interest you to hear that I am a Man of peace and I don’t want problem, but I do not know how you will feel about this because you may have double mind. But I am telling you that this is real and you are not going to regret after doing this transaction with me. I only hope that we can assist each other. But if you don’t want this business offer kindly forget it and I will not contact you again.
I have packaged a financial transaction that will benefit both of us, as the regional manager of the Hong Leong Bank; it is my duty to send in a financial report to my head office in the capital city (Kuala Lumpur- Malaysia) at the end of each year. On the course of the last year 2007 end of last year report, I discovered that my branch in which I am the manager made Five million Five hundred thousand dollar [5,500,000.00] which my head office is not aware of it and will never be aware of. I have since place this fund on what we call SUSPENSE ACCOUNT without any beneficiary. As an official of the bank I can not be directly connected to this fund, so this informed me of contacting you for us to work, so that you can assist and receive this fund into your bank account for us to SHARE.
Mean While you will have 35% of the total fund, Note there are practically no risk involved, it will be bank to bank transfer, all I need from you is to stand claim as the original depositor of this fund who made the deposit with our branch so that my Head office can order the transfer to your designated bank account.
If you accept this offer to work with me, I will appreciate it very much as soon as I receive your response I will give you details on how we can achieve it successfully.
Best Regards
Mr. Ghani Datuk Abdullah

HOW did they find you? Did someone tell them about a problem, and they were going to help fix it?

So, the Suns are on the outside looking in on next year’s playoffs right?
There are 5 teams which are more or less locks for the playoffs barring unforeseen catastrophe. Then there are probably 6 teams fighting for 3 playoff spots.
Spurs (old)
Jazz (No Boozer)
Rockets (Yao’s injury)
Clippers (cursed)
Hornets (weak bench, cheap owner)

I wouldn’t rule the Suns out completely. Even without Amare I like them more than the Clps or Hornets. Kings should probably be on that list also (ahead of the Clips). Memphis too.
I think the Lakers, Mavs, Nuggets, Blazers, Thunder, Rockets, Jazz and Spurs make it, not necessarily in that order, but the Suns would be by 9th choice.

KEVIN Pelton? Or do you mean Francis Pelton? Or do you mean KEVIN PELTON, aka KP2, the stat whiz all the kids love?
#52
KP2?
I heard that you have a crush on Kevin Pelton, Mortimer.
High off of love.
Drunk from the hate.
Kevin Pelton, the NBA statistician who is reportedly doing work for the Indiana Pacers of the NBA? THAT Kevin Pelton?
Maybe I do maybe I don’t blush.

And the same dude who tore his shirt off
And was kicked out of the “Ref scandal” game vs. Dallas this year…

This one..
Love it, I was glad I was up in the 300 level, so I couldn’t throw far enough to hit a ref:

I totally understood him "doing it" as well
I almost wanted to.

Now that Sheed is retiring
Who will get the most technical fouls this year?
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
Although if he did retire
Going out trying to break into the refs locker room would be classic.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
his new favorite team is the Jazz
gotta follow his all time favorite boy in Gordon Haywire.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
I swear if you are serious (and thank God you aren't)
I will smite you.
HERETIC!
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I can't wait till we play the Jazz
Babbitt and Hayward look exactly the same. Rice won’t know what’s going on. “Hey, who gave our rookie a Jazz jersey? Is this a prank? I shouldn’t have eaten that donut!”
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
Maybe they'll replace Haarlow
With a microphone implanted in Rice’s jejunum. It would be similar quality reporting.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
it is
and Haarlow is a hotty, even if she has a mile of forehead, so DtM is crazy.
"Bof teemz play hahd"
It's ok
I’m used to being persecuted on BE for having good taste in women. Haarlow is scary looking. She’d make a great date, but only on Halloween.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
"You could hurt a guy in the first row with a shot like that."
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
"....and my tooth hurts"
Phil Mickelson: "A Great shot is when you pull it off.....a smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it"’
I am whelmed by that aricle.
Now you are being deliberately obtuse

stars>role players
we should get some of those!
"In fact you might say that Ugly is the Blazers' secret weapon this year."
-Dave
As for the Blazers...They are officially the NBA equivalent of a movie serial killer
-basketbawful
That's what we've been missing!
It seems so obvious once you see it written down. Why did we use our late first round and early second round picks to draft guys that aren’t already NBA stars?
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
Anyone know if Claver will be in the summer league?
He was reported to be in Portland a week or two ago. I’m not sure if he’s ready yet, but his recent clips look far better than the footage we saw of him last year.

nope

I didn't!
I don’t like being condescended to and just want someone I’m debating with to say what they are saying.
But I’m totally calm! Calmer then you are, Dude.
Calmer than you are.

YOU ARE NEVER AS CALM AS I AM DUDE.
‘CAUSE I’M LIKE, CALM ON ROIDS TO THE 10TH DEG.
Why am I talking to you, as if you could understand anything I say.
sheeeees

People like Mort.
Am I right?

I guess the nemesis talk from the other day is coming true in part.
Hey, I’ll call you a little girl if you will call me a weenie.
On second thought – I wanna be the little girl this time.
In reality, Mort does keep his cool pretty well. My last line above is fairly close to what was directed at him in that other thread (…you don’t have the ability to understand – is the way I took it).

Haha, yeah.
I don’t take that from someone who doesn’t even know what he is arguing.

My calves are nicer than in this photo though!!
I figure I should smoke a pipe, so people go “hey, that guy is smoking a pipe, you never see that anymore” and then they will be my friends.

The only drawback
Is that then I’ll smell like I smoke a pipe and then no one will want to be my friend :-(

Amare - "the Knicks are back"
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhHHHHHhhhh, i’m so glad he went East.
get Daniel Gibson and his .424 career 3 point %
interesting, Toronto has agree'd to send send Bosh to Cleveland in a sign and trade
according to EPSN. Just waiting on Bosh’s approval.
judging by what they say about Bosh in that article, Bosh is an idiot. “i want to play with Lebron but only in these certain cities.” what a moron. if you have to play with Lebron in stinking Siberia you go there to play.
