Can Morrow Play Defense?

It's entirely possible that Morrow can play defense, but given the team he played for (GSW), nobody asked him to contribute/focus on that end of the court.  People say he lacks the lateral quickness/athleticism, but I see the type of long-armed player that can make a difference.  He is only 24 after all, and may be the best young shooter in the league from distance.  If he can develop his defensive skills, he'd be a tremendous weapon worthy of a significant contract.  What do you think:

I think Morrow can hope to reach Durant's level of defense someday!

In Bayless I trust.

Probably not

Which makes him a pretty good fit for us.

I like Morrow

However, generally, a good defender doesn’t have to be asked to play to defense. It’s more of a mindset. A good defender isn’t willing to give up anything.

a good defender horse-collars K*be and takes him down

then takes the suspension and the fine and does it again the next time they meet up in the postseason

you don’t have to be real smart to play tough defense, just chippy

Paul Pierce and Ray Allen were considered awful defenders when they got to Boston, where they were put in the right system and became integral pieces of the stingiest defense in the league.

right

Coaches and systems have an immense impact on defense. Mike Brown, SVG, JVG, Poppovich, Thibs/Doc, Skiles and Larry Brown have been turning wide varieties of personnel groups into incredibly tough defenses for the past decade. Seeing as Skiles and Brooks can take young players without great defensive reputations and turn them into good defensive units, I think King Mar is off base in saying players who haven’t developed a reputation as a good defender in a poor defensive situation can’t become a nice piece in a stingy defense.

That's not what I said

I said generally, good defenders don’t have to be asked to play defense. Paul and Ray Ray are still horrible defenders, it’s just hard to tell cuz they’re part of a good system. In Morrow’s case whether he’s in a bad defensive system is irrelevant, for if were truly a good defender you’d be able to at least see it in his tenacity and one on one defense. If placed on Boston with good team defense, could he do it, maybe, but it still doesn’t make him a good defender. Besides, it’s a mute point any way. I’m more interested in Morrow’s offense than his D any how.

KG

not to discount Tibs’ impact, but great defenses are anchored from the inside out and for Boston they have one of the best cornerstones to build around … as for Morrow, no, he cannot play much defense on the ball vs an opponent who has any handles – he doesn’t have much lateral quickness relative to his SG defensive assignments

by hardcore on Jul 6, 2010 2:28 PM PDT up reply actions

we'll see how KG holds the D together next year without Tibs

I expect there will be a drop off, and everyone will probably blame it on the Celtic players all getting old at the same time

it will be interesting to see how da Bulls’ defense improves next year, with Tom as their head coach

you'd have to put Morrow on a conventional team for a few months

before you could judge what you’re really getting. or put him in a winning system such as LA or Boston and expect we’d be getting a little less than what he did for them =)

Treat people well because Karma can hit you at any second.
