INDEPENDENT JUNK: JD 07-04-2010
I'm surprised there is no other junk drawer yet (8:03 am). Though, there probably will be at least one other one by the time I post this if history be my guide.
Here's a question: what's the most money you ever paid for a beer?
In Paris a couple days ago, I sat down at an outdoor cafe near Notre Dame to beat the heat and rest. I noticed a couple of people next to me had large mugs of beer on their table (44 cL), so I ordered one to drink while waiting for my wife to arrive. It turned out to be 19.5 Euros, which is in the neighborhood of 25$. This is a personal record for me, exceeding anything I ever paid at the Rose Garden.
Anyhoo, I'm back home now, and wondering what the heck is happening to my team. What is happening to my team?

I haven’t paid more than 15$ for a pintplus mug. I thought that was ridiculous. I suppose paying 8$ at the rose garden for a little less than half should count too. What’s the $/fl.oz?

So yesterday in Longview they had a big cardboard boat race
on Lake Sacajawea. Its was awesome. Half the boats (which some were big enough to hold like 10 people) barely made it out of the starting gate. One enormous pirate ship went like 20 feet then split in half.
I guess this has been going on for a couple years now, but this was the fist time i’d heard of it. Fun fun.

And everybody knows it’s overpriced. While apparently not everybody outside of Paris knows that everything on or around the Champs-Elysees is ridiculously overpriced, even a tiny cup of espresso.

We had a nice convo in English and they were amused that I’d ordered the beer after seeing theirs. They were quite shocked at the price.
I’ve spent quite a bit of time in France over a number of years, but I’d not seen such an outrageous beer price before this.
Notwithstanding the ridiculous cost and the fact that it was just a Kronenbourg 1664 draft, it was truly refreshing. We had been trudging around in temperatures around 100 degrees F, trying to keep our group of 23 eight-graders from getting drunk or pregnant.
FWIW, Notre Dame is not especially near the Champs-Elysees, and the next day I actually enjoyed a somewhat reasonably priced Heineken on the boulevard while the students shopped for designer T-shirts.

Okay, make that “everything around the border of the Saine in the center of Paris is overpriced”. I once made the mistake with a cup of coffee in a cafe close to the finish line of the Tour De France. They also had really special tourist prices. And I had relatives in Paris, so I should have known that.

There’s a likability to LeBron despite his occasional (and increasing) forays into ass-clownery, he’s not, or at least I hope he’s not, the Alex Rodriguez of the NBA. That said, Cleveland better have a plan/deal in place to get him a legit #2, most likely through a sign and trade or salary dump from another team.

League sources said yesterday that the Celts have expressed trade interest in guards Leandro Barbosa of Phoenix and Rudy Fernandez of Portland.
Crickey, we don't even have a bad contract to dump on them in exchange for Sheed (who would be traded and then retires to get him off the books)
That Barbosa trade makes more sense in terms of matching contracts.
Today I also thought about what Nash will do once Amare leaves him sitting in the desert. Demands a trade at the deadline? To the Lakers for Blake and Odom? To the Spurs once Parker is gone? To NY for Eddy Curry?
New York seems like the obvious location
What about Dallas? Re-team with Dirk for one last title run?
On offense, Jason Kidd and Steve Nash could work. They'd be passable on defense, too.
Kidd would have to be much less ball dominant, but I think that he could defer more at his age.
Yet, even after Amar’e Stoudemire bolts for New York, I doubt that the Phoenix Suns trade Nash.
Bill Simmons said Nash was intrigued when he suggested he demand a trade to Portland.
I wonder if Nash respects the Blazers more or less now.

The hacker unfortunately seems to have promoted only the books/apps of himself or the person who ordered it by making purchases of those to get them high up into the recommended top sections. So it shouldn’t be too hard to investigate who is behind this. Still not so great security.

The complimentary brochure says nothing about that, so if at all it would be unplanned
But the music selection during the fireworks includes “God Bless America – Celine Dion”, “I Gotta Feeling – Black Eyed Peas”, “All I Do Is Dream of You – Michael Buble”, “Just Dance – Lady Gaga”, “Go the Distance – Michael Boloton” and last but not least “Run Free (Soundtrack of Spirit) – Hans Zimmer”.

I guess my question is: is fourth big man is really an area of acute need? Seems like we have bigger issues with wing defense (currently) and starting point guard and third big man (after Miller and Camby are gone).

I’m not disputing that Amundson is better than Dante. You guys have answered that pretty well. I want to know why we are going after an (admittedly decent) journeyman/hustle player who can probably be had later in free agency rather than the more difficult to find PGOTF, third big man (Amundson isn’t good enough for this IMO), or solid wing defender.

Joey Votto, Kevin Youkilis, Ryan Zimmerman, Felix Hernandez, Francisco Liriano and Jered Weaver got hosed beyond belief. Alex Rios and Josh Willingham are having monster seasons also and really should be there.
I can’t remember exactly how it works but the players get to vote some people in and then the allstar manager (the manager of the league champ the previous year) gets to fill out the rest of the position players and pick all the pitchers. They often do a worse job than the fans who vote the starters, and this year is a perfect example.
Cain had a case and is probably more deserving than several of the pitchers who made it, but he’s not an inexcusable snub like the guys I listed.
Good to see Cliff Lee made it. Going to stink when he gets traded.
Not surprised Felix missed the cut, hard to have three All Stars on a losing team.

John Miller made a good point during the sunday night game about Jered Weaver (and i guess the same could be said for Felix) not making it in. he was saying how Choo would have got the Cleveland spot but since he’s going on the DL, they took Carmona instead. why couldn’t they have said, “hey, choo is in. but he’s on the DL. his replacement will be Weaver/Hernandez.” but instead to fulfill that horrible “one player from every team” rule they picked Carmona.

I’m still not certain what I’m doing, but it’s lookin more and more like I’m gonna end up hanging with the family and BBQing (and drinking) and lighting fireworks for the little ones in the family. …why are you at home?
Everyone has their reasons. I’ll be here tonight for a few reasons:
- The whole Bay Area is as dry as a tinderbox, and we have some people nearby who like to set off fireworks (illegally, of course, but there’s little enforcement). We’d rather our house stay intact.
- There are only a few actual good fireworks displays in the Bay Area, and if you don’t pay, the free ones are insanely crowded and not really that great.
If I was in an unusual location with a unique fireworks show (peers over at Norsk), I’d probably make the effort. But otherwise it’s not that great this year.
Besides, SciFi has the Greatest American Hero marathon going on. What’s more patriotic than a day of Connie Sellecca? And we’ll catch the Boston Pops later.

To me, Independence Day is not a holiday about war, nor a holiday about the brave men and women of the armed forces defending the American way, nor a day to remember those who have served in the military, or about guns or really even patriotism.
It’s a holiday about bravery to be different, independent, to throw off the shackles of yesterday and embrace the terrifying newness of today.
War was an unfortunate bi-product of that startlingly brave will to forge a new way. Wars and warriors are to be mourned, not celebrated, for the need for them is unfortunate at best.

Now, that said, can we please get some better soccer uniforms for next world cup?

yeah that’s the biggest problem with them.
In the actual jersey the little red stripe is outside the big white stripe which somehow makes it look slightly better to me. Not sure why. The white ones are better since the stripe is less dominant.
our type of jersey just doesn't seem to be in style right now
most national teams are using essentially solid colored jerseys with the color their team is identified by. Brazil (yellow) Uruguay (light blue) Holland (orange) Germany (white) Spain (red). Argentina use blue and white stripes, but it’s been that way since 1911. Our little sashes look kind of ridiculous in a sea of elegant simplicity.
yeah, it seems like the top teams have changed their jersey very little over the years, whereas we make wholesale changes to ours literally every year.

I don’t understand why this would be a problem? They are expressing their interest in the guy based on something that may or may not happen. There’s nothing sinister here.
If a bunch of plumbers get together and set the price for plumbing, or if gas stations collectively se tthe price for gas, that's illegal.
In this case, they are not setting a price, so there’s probably nothing illegal about it, but their services are for sure a commodity.

maybe this is closer? You’re building a house, and you really want to hire a particular plumber who does really good work but is in high demand. So you go to his buddy who does cabinets and say I’ll hire you to do the cabinets if we can get the plumber guy to take the project, but if not, no dice. I used to see Predator in the TV guide years ago…
and it would always get 2 of 4 stars for the rating. I’d tell my friend how could they give this movie only 2 stars. Then one day it started being listed with 3 stars. Takes some people a long time to come around sometimes.

I just finished season 2 & 3 of Mad Men.
It’s not bad, Emmy’s the last 2 years, but for some reason I get the feeling not a lot of people will like it.

i am through the first few episodes of season 1
I still haven’t decided if I like it or not. There are only two characters that I like, and every other character likes to poop on them.
It grows on you, or it did me anyway.
Slow paced, but I thought a nice change of pace.
And the TV season in general is slow right now, so a good time to check out some shows you didn’t tune in to. I think I heard Wired was good, and the one with Glen Close (can’t think of the name).

I really liked it
The characters aren’t really likeable, and I hate the weasel guy whose character is married to the girl on Community, but I thought it was a really interesting show.
I like Don Draper’s character a lot.

I did have to buy an air purifier though, the 2nd hand smoke was starting to get to me.
Wow, I can’t remember the names but I loved this one scene – The one office girl who eventually gets promoted dances in front of the guy she got together with before he got married (and this dance was at a party after he was married). The look she gave him as she danced toward him was a piece of magic. Or I should say the way they captured it on film. And then he says, "I don’t like you like this."

a friend’s six year old came over yesterday for the UFC, and the dog kept biting his ankles, so he picked him up and threw him over the porch railing. it’s about a 6 foot drop. It was hilarious. I hate my dog.

Part of it is when we lived in Redmond, OR when I was an ‘ittle wittle boy, the firework shows were soooooo awesome because it’d just be in a field and the drunk fireworks worker people would light them off all at once so the whole thing was the finale.
And you were so close, it was like they were falling on top of you.
Every other show has sucked since then, even nicely timed ones.

For years growing up, after we moved away from Redmond, I wondered why fireworks just weren’t as impressive anymore. They didn’t even fall on top of you! So after a few years I finally asked my dad why Redmond was so much better and he revealed the secret— drunken city workers just setting them all off at once.

I still think they're adorable
whatever negative effect(affect? I hate English sometimes) they may have had on that franchise, they are damn cute animals. Speaking of cute animals, I played with some adorable doggies tonight. I want a doggy so much, these two pups were so sweet and one was super playful and her sister was super duper shy but started playing with me pretty quickly (I’m like a dog whisperer. and a baby whisperer. dogs and babies love me for some reason) and it was super cute and made me want a dog even more than I used to.

As well as some sort of over the counter anti-inflammatory med like ibuprofen or aleve. That is important and left out of the RICE acronym. I prefer ibuprofen with injuries. You can take 800mg 3 times a day to really blast the swelling away. However do not underestimate the value of ice. Ice is the single most effective method of controlling swelling.
